Congrats to team GB! :cheer:
what a result, terrific play from dan, and leon.?
wonder will andy feel this team is capable of winning the next round
Well done to Team GB and particularly to Dan Evans who came of age today. :cheer::cheer::cheer: I have to admit that when he lost the third and fourth sets I thought it was all over - he really showed grit in winning the fifth. It was great for the team to record such a significant win without Andy but do I think this team could win against Belgium without Andy and with Malisse and Rochus on the team - both of whom play doubles as well as singles? No, I don't think so. Let's hope that April in Scotland fits in with Andy's plans. Braehead seems to be establishing itself as the venue for Davis Cup tennis in GB!

So chuffed for the team. Evo is a total legend and Leon is a great coach to inspire him to win! Thanks to everyone who kept me up to speed on twitter. So frustrating not knowing what was going on and not having a tv to watch!! Twitter was fab except for a bit of negativity when Evo went down a set and a break but the unfollow button worked a treat ;)

I think I'm even more pleased for Dan than for GB. He looked so promising as a junior, then seemed to lose his way. Whatever he is doing now that is different from the last few years, it is certainly working - keep on doing it! Being so small I doubt if he could reach the very top, but he could still have a very good career, he has so much variety.
Just home - wow wow wow
Need to read back over what I missed.

That is such a shame, isn't it! I guess that tennis is still perceived by most in the uk as that 'minority sport for posh folk' and available to the masses for 2 weeks in June/ July.
Interestingly, an Italian friend of mine mentioned that tennis is also seen as a sport for posh folk in Italy.
Congratulations to Leon and Team GB. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: I am really happy for Dan Evans - he played his heart out to win his two rubbers - and Colin and Ross.
Can't wait to read the blogs and see the pics of the weekend. Hope everyone who was there enjoyed themselves and had a great weekend.

Fantastic result,
really looking forward to some quiet time so I can watch and savour it all (recorded it but with the madness that is my life only managed to see first set of the doubles, Ward's match today and the end of evo's match today)
Breahead in April hmmm it may have been a wonderful venue, but really 4 tie's out of the last 7 home ties (3 out of the last 4) don't think that is good for whole country inclusion
do they really think Andy will be any-more likely to play if its in Scotland?
Interestingly, an Italian friend of mine mentioned that tennis is also seen as a sport for posh folk in Italy.
Mmm. I don't think so, tbh.
Golf is the posh sport by antonomasia, tennis not so much.

Fair enough. Your observation against hers.
Might depend on which part of Italy you're from, perhaps. But I'd reckon that it is still dwarfed by football, as it is here.

Living in Portugal, except when the Fed Cup came here, I don't get to support Davis or Fed Cup. Today was the first Davis cup tie I managed to see streamed for ages. What came across was an incredible level of support which I had only read about before.
I think the key thing is making sure you have support like that wherever you go. It is so important and worth a point, game or set or two during the three days.
So no it should not have a monopoly but for goodness sake don't choose somewhere unless the supportive atmosphere can be guaranteed!
Fair enough. Your observation against hers.
Might depend on which part of Italy you're from, perhaps. But I'd reckon that it is still dwarfed by football, as it is here.
Probably, but on the whole I think tennis is evenly spread all over Italy :)
And well, with football there's no competition whatsover!
If I had to give an esteem of sport "importance" here... 90% is football, 9% shared between volleyball, basketball, tennis and cycling, and 1% for all the other sports.
Anyway congrats to the GB Team and particularly to Leon. That's what a great coach can do, dear JL :)
Just about recovered from all that excitement :)... and having waited so long to be present at a DC weekend like that, even more gutted that I got ill just before I was due to go up there and wasn't able to share it with all the forumites who were at Braehead  - not that it does anything to stop me being extremely happy about the result :) (it was definitely a consolation to be able to experience all the excitement on twitter - I've never been tweeted at so much, asked so many questions, etc - mad but great fun. :) Good to see the next generation of Brits really getting into it too, desperate to find streams that would work where they were!
I hope this tie is the making of Dan Evans (who had already been showing improvements in attitude, etc, under his latest coaches) - I think it should be - it's not just one big win against a player not firing on all cylinders, fantastic as Friday's win against Lacko was. It took real character to come out firing again today and then to cope with the loss of the 3rd and 4th sets - he came through all the big tests this weekend.
A lot of credit should go to Leon too for getting the best out of his players (or at least the best out of enough of his players to win each tie!) after years of DC captains seeming all too often to get the worst out of them. A bit of luck, maybe, but having seen him in action, I think there is a lot more than luck involved.
It is great too to see Colin and Ross getting more and more established all the time and while James didn't have the best weekend, it is worth remembering that both of his opponents were higher-ranked than him, and we wouldn't even have been in Group 1 had he not won so many matches in Group 2 over the last two years.
A few stats to show just how big a deal this was:
a) This is the first time GB have won a live 5th rubber in Davis Cup since Rusedski beat Rybalko in 1997 (15 years ago) and only the second time we have done it since 1982
b) This is the first time GB have won a Davis Cup tie at Group 1 level or above without a top 100 singles player in the team since Jeremy Bates, then WR 186, and Mark Petchey, then WR 324, (plus Nick Brown in the doubles) beat Austria in Manchester in 1991 (21 years ago) - having by the looks of it been preferred to the GB no 2 at the time (Andrew Castle), Petchey upset Thomas Muster in the 2nd rubber on day 1 to set up that win (Muster never did like grass!)
c) Evo is the first Brit to win a live 5th Davis Cup rubber in front of a home crowd in the UK since Buster Mottram did it against Italy in Brighton in 1981 (31 years ago)
d) Evo is the first Brit to win the 5th set of a live 5th Davis Cup rubber since Mark Cox managed it against West Germany in Birmingham in 1969 (43 years ago!)
I think those last two show just how lucky those of you at Braehead were! :)
All stats subject to E&OE (my head is still a bit fuzzy, should I need an excuse!) but I did check them carefully.
Finally, I haven't checked this, but I would venture a guess that Evo is the first Brit to win two live singles rubbers in a Davis Cup tie at G1+ when officially (or, pre-1973, effectively) ranked outside the top 250 ever! :)
Anyway, Muzz missing this tie has worked out brilliantly and while we will find it even tougher to win the next tie if he doesn't play, we're on a 10-rubber winning streak against Belgium in DC (5-0 wins home and away, albeit before I was born LOL - in 1960 and 1963) so roll on April! ... though it'll take a lot to beat this weekend!

I do agree with you David and yes Eastbourne was a mistake the people there were vocal and supportive but the venue was too big at least 1/4 of the seats were unsold and with the open-air venue the noise dissipated too easily
but Liverpool was a great atmosphere as well as Bolton, Bolton was actually a sell out (probably cos they could resize the arena to match the tickets sold to a certain extent LOL
but I really do feel they can't keep taking it back to Breahead time after time after time
I will do my damnedest to get there in April after all it is only 160 miles away but after the winters we have had the last two years even without my mad life I wasn't prepared to try to do Glasgow in February, and I think that showed with huge gaps in the audience over all three days

Of course they're capable of winning elsewhere. I'd love to see it in Liverpool for obvious reasons! I just see no harm in retaining the advantage of momentum that has been built up at Breahead - and a momentum has been built. There will be an excited, motivated belief that has in fact already begun with the venue announcement. That is an advantage as important as a break of serve.
Its been confirmed the next tie with Belgium is in Braehead. I have started up a thread here http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?709-DAVIS-CUP-2012-E-A-Zone-I-GBR-v-Belgium-6-8-April-2012

Well done Team GB!!! Awesome job!!! :yahoo:
It is indeed an excellent win - I hope that both the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup teams get more coverage and support in future, to help them to build on their recent success.
Ah man, its days like that which are why I love tennis. What a performance.
I thought James played superb for the first set, he matched Lacko at the back of the court throughout and won all the long rallies, but just couldn't get a sniff at Lacko's serve, and despite having that set point, that was the closest he came in the whole match. The second set deterioration was acceptable really, after that level of effort, its the concentration levels and mental side which divide the best from the rest at points like these and Lacko's extra experience showed. I thought he was excellent.
Dan came out like a steam train, Andy would have been proud of those two sets, great volleys, passing shots and backhands galore. He was sensational. Didn't really see the Klizan revival coming, but when it did, it was pretty nerve racking. Dan should have won it in three, but it wasn't until the fourth set that Klizan really played his best tennis. But once it came down to the decider, it was obvious that Dan's head was in a good enough place to acknowledge that this was a straight shoot out, and one he had to play on his terms, and he did it. I'll be honest, at 2 sets all I didn't see it coming. He more than earned every tennis fans respect today, I hope he can have a really tremendous 2012.
I was the row behind the Slovak contingent today, made for some fun, they were a nice lot, although one had obviously left his Lynx (or Axe, as the Europeans call it) on the plane, bit difficult to handle if i'm honest. Mr Castle was directly below us for most of the day, he acknowledge my dad with a smile, he's not all that bad. I thought the crowd were tremendous, and I fully retract my comments yesterday about the Uni lot, they're superb and deserve some credit for this result too in my opinion. I thought watching Andy against Muller last year at Braehead couldn't be topped, but this came pretty darn close. Can't wait for Belgium!!
Dan Evans - simply Brilliant!!
well done Team GB!! - fantastic result!!
WOW! Dan became a man this tie! Seriously great composure and nerve at the end. Well done Team GB! What a tie!
Didn't expect to be relying on Dan instead of Wardy but so glad he stepped up to be counted! Had Andy been there, Dan wouldn't have had this opportunity to shine! Every cloud and all :)

We certainly seen some brilliant tennis and Dan Evans really became the star of the show, which think few were expecting, though I wouldn 't get too carried away just yet! Hopefully though Dan build on this success and gain confidence on the tour. The way Evans won yesterday having been pegged back to to 2 sets all after such a blistering start was most impressive! Must admitt I totally confident when I went to a 5th but Dan raised his game when it mattered and think the fabulous support helped him find another gear. It was as great effort from the slovaks too though and Kizan really challenged after an edgy start and found more weapons.
Of course Fleming/Hutchins put us in a good position with a professional performance of course, so well done to them! just a pity that James didn't win a match which I'm sure he will be pretty disappointed about though happy with the overall result. I think the pressure just seemed to get to him and whilst he played a good first set against Lacko when he didn't prevail the head juist seemed to drop somewhat.
is it just me that thinks the sterling mob are a bunch of self indulgent buffoons ?I think those unfortunate enough to be sat near me at Braehead could tell you that you're not alone J!
I think those unfortunate enough to be sat near me at Braehead could tell you that you're not alone J!
I don't think that I would have like to have been next to them either but I'm pretty sure the team appreciated their support.
GB jump 12 places in the DC rankings to 33 (Slovakia are unchanged, 1 place ahead of us, while Belgium are 24th, down 2), their best position since the summer of 2009, when we were already well on the slide.
The official DC ranking list is at http://bit.ly/p31end and my list of recent GB ties, DC rankings and how the ranking points are made up is at http://bit.ly/bi3QDD
Thanks - so we gained the same amount of ranking points from this tie as we did in the previous 9 ties?
Ah, yes, Bouncy. "Former British #1" sounds so much better than his actual record - career high 80, number of weeks in top 100 (i.e. mostly between 80 and 100) ten. TEN weeks. How he has the cheek to criticise Andy at all infuriates me. [/rant]
Thanks for that piece of info Mad, I always wondered about his achievements on the ATP circuit because of his negative comments on top players like Rafa, Roger and Andy too.:grrr:

I think in very small doses they are ok. I was at the tennis on Friday with my sister and she found them very annoying. I'm just glad we were on the opposite side of the court. The constant shouting out between 1st and 2nd serves. Shouting to the Slovak players 'you're not very good'. The umpire constantly having to say 'please' to get them to be quiet. I seem to see nothing but praise for these guys and I'm not sure why. I think I just prefer a bit more tennis etiquette.
I'd love to know how they manage to get those tickets every tie. Are they better GB fans than the rest of us - I don't think so. Give me the Murray forum fans/twitter fans any day of the week.
I have to say that it was a wonderful performance from GB. I knew Fleming/Hutch would seal the doubles. Dan was an absolute star. I think James will be gutted he didn't perform better but the important thing is that we won and without our star player. He still is our star player isn't he? I think Castle was hoping Leon would say we didn't need Andy.
I'm really happy that it will be back at Braehead again. I do feel for the fans in England who have to pay for flights etc to come to Glasgow yet again. I do think it should be spread out more across GB. I just hope that when we do get back to the World Group that they don't automatically move all home ties back to England. That would be a kick in the teeth. All tennis fans across GB should get a chance to see the team.

Whilst at times the students can OTT and don't always adhere to etiquette I think on the whole they are a plus and they do get some of the crowd going. That's not to say that there aren't other great fans , the Murray forum playing their part of course! It wasn't too smart when they got us a warning, though I took the 'you're not very good' comment as humour! I'm sure we'd be complaining on the other hand if the atmosphere was flat was which was sometimes the case in years gone by. I think we must accept that Davis Cup is a bit different from the regular tour and has always been partisan,in some counties it can be very noisy!
I don't think those of us in Scotland can complain if there are a few ties in England at a later date, as we've had our moments!
I think when you think about fans in other countries, particularly thinking about Eastern Europe and South America, calling them partizan would be an understatement. You compare those Uni lads with them and we've got it easy.
Whilst fair play and good manners are all well and good, some winding up and a bit of intimidation is allowed in my book. You get it everywhere else.

Absolutely agree. I have watched Davis Cup matches in other countries where the crowd interference has been a disgrace. The umpire warned the Uni supporters for being over zealous, as is his remit, and the match continued. It's all part of Davis Cup.

While the Uni crowd get a bit carried away due to excess alcohol, they do make a lot of noise and get the crowd going, which is a help to the players. Try as we do the am.commers do not make that much noise on their own.

All good points since my post. I'm not against the Stirling Uni bunch. In general they do create a great atmosphere. Having the umpire saying 'please, please' every 2 mins does get tiresome though.
As a very spoiled Scottish tennis fan I certainly wouldn't complain if the next few homes ties were in England. As I said what I don't want to happen is for us to get promoted and then all the ties return to England. Remember we didn't see Davis Cup in Scotland for decades before Andy Murray came along. Everyone in GB deserves a chance to see the team.

You're right. In general they do a great job getting everyone involved, but as the day wears on and the beers keep flowing, they go a bit too far. Certainly the noise between 1st & 2nd serves is not on, and even before a first serve they tend to go on a few seconds longer than I would like - especially later in the day :) Even when our guys are serving!!
They were certainly getting a good chorus of "shhhh" from around the arena when they went too far, though - especially from us :big grin:

They perhaps need to time their chants a bit better so they're quiet when players are serving and in between points. I thought they might be hampering rather than helping our own guys when they over-ran the 'noise' and Dan or James was trying to serve!
My personal beef is that they won't shut up when the players are being interviewed afterwards!
We want to hear what our guys have to say and not have it drowned out ...
Someone needs to have a word .....

They sound great when watching on TV though.
Like them or loathe them, the stirling uni lot are essential for our players and are what home DC ties were lacking for many years. Virtually all other countries have a dedicated bunch of young, loud supporters and that's what DC is all about. Home advantage and all that. Try south america if you think the stirling lot are badly behaved. Yes, I admit, they do maybe take it a bit too far at times but I have no doubt that their support brought Dan home in the 5th - just look at the way Treacle was geeing them up and getting them to chant more in that 5th set. Many of us forum folk were screaming our hearts out (my lack of voice still today is proof of that) but we will never be a match for a young group like them. Absolutely well done to them I say, and long may they continue to be there. I would even go as far as to say the LTA should pay them to go to away ties.
The advantages the Stirling uni lot will always have is that they will always be young folk, a lot of them will be having loads to drink which may add to the noise and they are altogether for longer period of times and can work on chants... They ae very good at the ties and for players apart from when they disrupt play or chants overrun!
I am not sure I would be too happy to have the LTA pay for all of them to go for away ties though...

They also keep that positive, high vocal level of support over five sets and so will be prone to occasional over exuberance. It's the umpire's job to reign them in when necessary, which he did. Davis Cup needs that sort of atmosphere and it's obvious the players appreciate it.
There was also a bunch of Glasgow Uni guys beside them and I think there was a bit of rivalry on Friday, then they all joined forces Saturday and Sunday. They are great fun and the team love having them all there. They are fantastic cheerleaders. Treacle, Colin and Rosco were all whipping them up into a frenzy (not that they needed very much encouragement)
Funny how one of the Umpires managed to control them better than the other:confused:

I've got a very keen teenager who'd like to go to Stirling Uni just so she can go along to DC ties and chant with them :rolling:
