BBC - Andy Murray named in Great Britain's Davis Cup team

htt ps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/66498813

Andy Murray has returned to Great Britain's Davis Cup team for the fixtures against Australia, France and Switzerland in Manchester next month.

The three-time Grand Slam champion was left out of the squad for the 3-1 win against Colombia in February.

Murray, 36, was integral to Britain's 2015 victory - their first Davis Cup win in 79 years.

The top two nations in Group B in Manchester qualify for November's finals in Malaga.

All of GB's ties will be broadcast on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.

Neal Skupski, Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans have also been selected for the 10-time champions who were eliminated in the group stages of last year's Finals.

"It's been a long time since we played in the North West and I'm sure we are going to feel and hear a lot of energy from the fans," GB captain Leon Smith said.

"We have a great team with a lot of Davis Cup experience who will be ready to give it everything in a tough group."

Analysis
Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent

With Evans and Murray in the team, captain Smith has calculated he is only likely to require the services of one specialist doubles player.

As the Wimbledon champion and world number one, Skupski fits the bill perfectly, and was a finalist at both the Miami and Monte Carlo Masters with Evans in 2021.

The team could still evolve over the month ahead, as Smith can make up to three changes until 24 hours before the start.

Performances at the US Open will be a factor, and the progress of Jack Draper will be closely watched. The 21-year-old, who has not played since the French Open, makes his comeback from a shoulder injury at the Winnipeg Challenger this week.

US Open 2023: Andy Murray 'playing best’ since hip operation

BBC - ht tps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/66666807

"I'm at my highest ranking (37) since I had my metal hip put in," Murray said.

"I'm happy with that. It's not been an easy journey. I would like to be ranked higher but this is the best I've played consistently since 2017."

..

"I've played quite a lot of matches against ex-coaches - I think I've only lost once," said the three-time major champion, who won his maiden Grand Slam title in New York in 2012.

"I mean, it probably should be a big advantage for him to have two guys that have worked with me over the years. But we'll find out."

BBC - ht tps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/67166854 Interesting article

Emma Raducanu: British star says 'provoking' questions have contributed to turnover of coaches

......

"I ask my coaches a lot of questions," she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"On certain occasions they haven't been able to keep up with the questions I've asked and maybe that's why it ended."

......

"I will be coming back with probably a lower ranking, but I'm actually looking forward to starting again, kind of resetting," she told Karthi Gnanasegaram.

"I still have new goals, new things I want to achieve. But I've still got like 15 years left in my career, so there's no rush."

Raducanu also has an ambition to represent Great Britain at the Olympics, although Paris 2024 might come too soon.

"Obviously, the Olympics is such a big thing in sport," she said.

"I think I could play another four if I really wanted to, so this one isn't the immediate rush or pressure, it's just about getting back on court.

"I love the Slams but I do want to have the Olympic experience. I'll just see how it goes, if I even qualify and how it goes from there."

.........

"Overall, I'm a lot better, I just feel like it's part of my day now and part of my life. It's not just tennis and fitness, it's the other commercial side as well and that's totally ok," added Raducanu.

"You have to think ahead about your life after your career is over and I think a lot of successful athletes would have said 'I wish maybe when I was younger I did think ahead a bit'.

"I think I have a lot of bandwidth, knowledge, learning and time, so I'm just curious about everything and every different world I can get into. But at the end of the day, tennis and training is my priority."

Interesting article on Andy in today's Guardian. I do not think. I can link to it as the site crashed here when I did but guardian.co.uk Sport Tennis and the article on Andy is there. In a rather revealing quote he states " last year I felt like, because I was not serving well, when it came serving for matches I was not getting many free points, ending up in long rallies. Thanks David.

Here are some comments from the article

“I feel like I'm enjoying [tennis] better,” Murray said in his pre-tournament press conference on Friday. “I think part of that is the mental side of it. Tennis is a difficult game in that respect. When you're struggling, you're out there on your own, it can be difficult at times. Part of it is that.

“The way you're playing, when you know you're capable of doing more than what you are, if you're not happy with the way you're hitting forehands and backhands and serving and those sorts of things, there's the technical aspect as well. Fixing some of those problems has helped me feel better on the court. Definitely some focus on the mental side, reframing the way you look at things helps.”
..
The 46-time tour-level titlist starts this year’s Australian Open campaign against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, with Novak Djokovic a potential third-round opponent. Murray played the Argentine twice last season, with both matches tight three-setters. Split at 1-1 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series, the three-time major winner is expecting another physical battle.

“I made most of my matches quite physical last year,” Murray said cracking a smile. “I don't know if that was necessarily him. He has a game that can make the matches that way. We played in Basel, I don't know if it was over three hours, but it felt like it was. In Indian Wells, another long one.

“I know that last year when I wasn't serving well, you end up getting into lots more long rallies and everything. Because of the way I return, I put quite a lot of returns back in play, you can end up getting into lots of long points when that's the case. Matches will go on. Hopefully that's not the case in a couple of days.”

BBC - Andy Murray wants to play in Olympic Games before retirement

ht tps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/68421921

"Britain's Andy Murray says he is not planning to "play much past this summer" but hopes to compete at another Olympic Games before he retires.

The future of the three-time Grand Slam champion, who turns 37 in May, has come under increased scrutiny after he has struggled for wins in recent months.

Murray lost to France's Ugo Humbert in the Dubai second round on Wednesday.

Before the 6-2 6-4 defeat, the Scot said he hoped to play at the Paris Olympics in the summer.

Afterwards, when asked again about his retirement plans, the former world number one gave his most definite answer yet.

"I get asked about it after every single match that I play, every single tournament that I play," added Murray.

"I'm bored of the question, to be honest. I'm not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop.

"But I don't plan on playing much past this summer."

Wimbledon, which runs from 1-14 July, marks the end of the British grass-court summer and the Olympics start in Paris on 24 July.

The US Open is the final Grand Slam tournament of the season and starts on 26 August in New York."

BBC - Andy Murray: Briton 'out for an extended period' with ankle injury

h ttps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/68661714

Andy Murray says he will be out for "an extended period" following the ankle injury he sustained at the Miami Open.

The Briton, 36, received treatment following the incident late in the third set of his dramatic 5-7 7-5 7-6 (7-5) defeat by Tomas Machac on Sunday.

He confirmed he suffered a full rupture of his anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and near full-thickness rupture of his calcaneofibular ligament (CFL).

Murray will now see a specialist to "determine the next steps".

The three-time major winner, who returned from hip resurfacing surgery in 2019, said: "[It] goes without saying this is a tough one to take."

But he added: "I'll be back with one hip and no ankle ligaments when the time is right."

Earlier this year, Murray, who will turn 37 in May, said he is not planning to "play much past this summer" but hopes to compete at another Olympic Games before he retires.

Wimbledon, where he is a two-time champion, begins on 1 July, while the Olympics start in Paris on 24 July.

Direct entry into the Olympic men's singles will be given to the top 56 of the ATP rankings on 10 June.

However, Murray could be placed outside and still qualify because of withdrawals, and he could also be given a spot as a former Olympic champion and Grand Slam winner.

His run to the last 32 in Miami has taken him to 59th in the live rankings before this injury set-back.

ATP - Thinker & Tinkerer: Behind Andy Murray's racquet change

h ttps://www.atptour.com/en/news/murray-bordeaux-challenger-2024-feature

You can be sure that shoppers at a Miami sports equipment store didn't have this on their bingo cards around the time of this year's Miami Open: seeing Andy Murray labouring towards the checkout with a mountain of equipment after nearly stripping bare the tennis aisle. Ten racquets, a weighing machine, lead tape... the former No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings wasn't settling for half measures.

Murray, who celebrated his 37th birthday Wednesday, surprised many tennis fans this week when he arrived at the ATP Challenger Tour 175 event in Bordeaux, France with Yonex Ezone racquets in hand, having previously used Head for more than 20 years.

The Scot’s journey to making that change began after a third-round loss in Miami, where he suffered an ankle injury that forced him to miss nearly two months. Despite being away from the match court, Murray tinkered with his new equipment and tested it all ‘in the lab’.

“When I lost in Miami, I went to a sports shop and I bought about 10 racquets. I bought a machine to weigh the racquets, check the balance and swingweight of the racquets. I bought lead tape,” Murray told reporters at the BNP Paribas Primrose. “I measured all the racquets myself.

“It was something to do when I was injured. I tried lots of different racquets. I tested them with Hawkeye when I was able to.”

Murray’s latest change is just further proof that the three-time major champion is not letting any opportunity for improvement pass him by this late in his two-decade career.

“I’ve been playing with the same racquet for 20 years and in that time, things change,” said Murray, who faces Gregoire Barrere on Wednesday in Bordeaux. “The game has changed. I used the same string as well for all of that time.”

Murray also took time at the Bordeaux Challenger to answer fan’s ‘most asked’ questions, drawing laughs from the seventh-seeded wild card as he discussed his sense of humor on social media and whether he and Jamie Murray are twins.

Andy Murray’s fairytale Wimbledon farewell ‘still possible’ after surgery
Two-times SW19 champion is recovering from a back operation but claims he has withdrawn from next week’s tournament are premature, say insiders

...
The former world No1 had a minor procedure on a spinal cyst on Saturday, which normally requires a recovery period of four weeks.

However, The Times understands the two-times Wimbledon champion, whose ability to bounce back from medical interventions is fabled, still believes it is possible to be on court at the start of next week.

In a statement, Murray’s management said: “Following his surgery on Saturday, Andy is continuing to work with his medical team to confirm when he will return to the court.

“At this stage, no decisions have been made and we will update further as soon as anything has been finalised.”

The ATP caused confusion on Sunday when it posted on Twitter, known now as X, that “Andy Murray unfortunately withdrew from the Wimbledon Open due to spinal cyst surgery”.

The post was deleted and withdrawn at the request of Murray’s camp and his former coach, Leon Smith, clarified that he had not yet pulled out.

“I’ve seen the reports, and on social media, and that’s not my understanding,” Smith told the BBC. “This has come from one source and had a knock-on effect. A lot of people are reporting it but that’s not my understanding.

“He obviously went through a procedure yesterday and you have to wait and see now. My understanding is no decision has been made and let’s hope for the best for Andy.”

If Murray is not fit enough to play singles, the final wild card in the less physically demanding doubles draw has been left open in case he wishes to play with his brother Jamie.

Murray to make Wimbledon decision 'as late as possible'

Andy Murray will make a decision "as late as possible" about a farewell Wimbledon appearance - but says it is "more likely" he will be unable to play singles next week.

The 37-year-old Briton has returned to training after having a procedure on a back issue at the weekend.

Former world number one Murray, who won two of his three Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon, plans to retire later this year.

The Championships start at the All England Club on Monday.

"I'm going to wait until the last minute to see if I'm going to be able to play and I've earned that right to do that," said Murray, who ended Britain's 77-year wait for a men's singles champion in 2013 and won again in 2016.

"This is not clear-cut where I am 100% going to be ready to play or there is a 0% chance that I can play. That is the situation.

"I would say it's probably more likely that I'm not able to play singles right now."

Before his back problem flared up at Queen's last week, the Scot had intended to play in the singles and doubles - alongside his brother Jamie - at Wimbledon.

Murray's name still remains in the pot for the men's singles draw, which will be made on Friday at 10:00 BST.

The doubles draw takes place at 12:00 BST on Friday with the event starting on Wednesday, but Murray could play later in the week which would give him more recovery time.

"Maybe it's my ego getting in the way but I feel that I deserve the opportunity to give it until the very last moment to make that decision," said Murray.

"It's complicated, and it's made more complicated because I want to play at Wimbledon one more time.

"I want to have that opportunity to play the tournament."

The former world number one says the area where he had the operation is not sore, but still does not have 100% feeling in his leg.

After hitting at Wimbledon on Saturday for the first time since the procedure, Murray returned to the practice courts on Sunday and played a practice set with fellow Briton Jack Pinnington-Jones.

"It's getting better every single day. I want to give it every single chance that I can to get there," said Murray.

"I'm going to play another set again tomorrow. I'm doing some physical testing in the morning to see how far off I am from a physical perspective.

"Then I will probably make a decision tomorrow evening after that."

Speaking after practice earlier on Monday, Murray said: "I'll have a chat with my team, speak to my family this evening and make a decision.

"It's getting better and the testing I've done has been good. I just need to decide whether it's enough to compete."

Murray is fighting to be fit because he wants a bit of "closure" at the All England Club before stopping playing professionally.

The former world number one had the cyst close to his spinal cord removed because it was causing nerve pain in his right leg.

On Sunday, Murray said the area where he had the operation was not sore, but added he still did not have 100% feeling in his leg.

He trained with former British number one Kyle Edmund for over an hour on Monday, leading 6-3 2-0 in a practice match before they stopped.

Murray and Raducanu to team up in Wimbledon mixed doubles

Andy Murray will play with Emma Raducanu in a superstar mixed doubles partnership as part of his Wimbledon farewell.

Murray, 37, is playing at the Championships for the final time before retiring later this year.

The two-time men's singles champion decided on Tuesday he was not fit enough to play in the singles after a recent back operation.

Murray will play in the men's doubles alongside older brother Jamie and has now also opted to join forces with fellow Briton Raducanu in an eye-catching pairing.

Speaking after practice on Tuesday, and before the news broke on Wednesday about his partnership with Raducanu, Murray said: "Doubles is a slightly different game in terms of the physicality of it and I am looking forward to that."

Murray played with American great Serena Williams in the 2019 mixed doubles at Wimbledon, describing it as a "once in a lifetime" opportunity.

Playing alongside 2021 US Open champion Raducanu is set to be another special occasion in the final weeks of his illustrious career.

Speaking on Monday, Raducanu said that teaming up with Murray in the Wimbledon mixed doubles was "always a childhood dream".

"Wimbledon is Andy Murray on Centre Court," she said.

On Wednesday, Murray said he thought his opening men's doubles match with Jamie would take place on Thursday.

The mixed doubles is set to start on Friday, with first-round matches also being played on Saturday.

BBC - Murray's Wimbledon career over as Raducanu pulls out of doubles

h ttps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/articles/cz9x74erp37o

Andy Murray's Wimbledon career is over after Emma Raducanu pulled out of their planned appearance in the mixed doubles.

Former world number one Murray, 37, was due to play alongside his fellow Briton on Saturday evening at the All England Club.

Raducanu, 21, said she has "some stiffness" in her right wrist.

She moved into the fourth round of the women's singles with a dominant two-set win over Greek ninth seed Maria Sakkari on Friday.

"I have decided to make the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles," she said.

"I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy but I've got to take care."

Murray, a two-time singles champion at Wimbledon, was playing at SW19 for the last time before retiring later this year.

The Scot is also said to be "disappointed" that he is unable to play alongside 2021 US Open champion Raducanu.

Murray's mother Judy, in response to a post on X from television presenter Marcus Buckland describing Raducanu's decision as "astonishing", wrote: "Yes, astonishing."

He was not permitted to find a replacement partner for Raducanu under tournament rules because the draw had already been made.

Murray and Raducanu, who were set to play China's Zhang Shuai and El Salvador's Marcelo Arevalo, have been replaced by an alternate pairing.

It means Murray made his final appearance on Thursday when he lost alongside older brother Jamie in the men's doubles.

A video montage of Murray's career was played on the Centre Court big screen after the match, leaving the former world number one in tears as thousands of fans showed their appreciation.

Murray pulled out of the singles on Tuesday as he continues to recover from a back operation on 22 June.

The three-time major champion is planning to retire later this year, with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games set to be his final event.

'Schedule put Raducanu in very awkward position' - analysis
BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller at Wimbledon

Saturday’s schedule played a major part in Emma Raducanu's decision.

Being asked to play in the fourth match of the day on Court One is the same as being asked to play in a night session.

And given this Grand Slam is a predominantly daytime event, you can understand why a player would not want to spend all evening on site with a fourth-round singles match the following day.

The schedule put Raducanu in a very awkward position, and has led to a decision which will be very disappointing for Murray and everyone looking forward to what would have been a fun finale to his Wimbledon career.

This was no ordinary mixed doubles pairing, although players do regularly prioritise singles over doubles.

And there can be no change of partner once the draw is made. So instead of Murray teaming up with another British player, American alternates Rajeev Ram and Katie Volynets come into the draw.

The game, which had been due to take place on Saturday night, was to have been Murray’s final appearance at the tournament.

It is understood that Raducanu, the US Open winner and British Women’s No 3, told the Murray camp on Friday evening that she was pulling out of the event but she gave a different reason to the one shared in a public statement via her agent on Saturday.

Sources close to the Murray camp told The Times on Sunday: “The surprise was more to do with the explanation given publicly and less about the withdrawal itself.”

Nick Kyrgios slams BBC colleague Andrew Castle for ‘disrespect’

Nick Kyrgios, the controversial Australian former player turned Wimbledon commentator, has taken aim at his BBC colleague Andrew Castle’s commentary saying that it showed he had “never played tennis at a high level”.

Kyrgios said that it was “disrespectful” of Castle to criticise the standard of play in Taylor Fritz’s fourth-round victory over Alexander Zverev.

Castle, a former British No 1 who has led the BBC’s Wimbledon commentary team for two decades, said of the match: “You can’t say it’s been the most captivating tennis, to be frank.”

Minutes later, Kyrgios, 29, who joined the BBC team this year, wrote on Twitter/X: “‘Not captivating’ — was a comment from a commentator who is doing the Zverev & Fritz match.

“This alone tells me that they have probably never played tennis at a high level. Two of the most elite servers we have. Quite disrespectful. C’mon be better.”

.......

During last year’s men’s singles final at Wimbledon between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios also called Castle a “clown” and accused him of “spoiling the match big time”.
....

On the British Tennis Fans Facebook group Castle was described by one of its 6,000 members as the “Hello! magazine of commentary” and was “utterly useless, pointless and irrelevant to tennis,” while another said that he was “the man who’ll dredge up absolutely anything so he can never stop talking”.

"The first public glimpse of the shock coaching partnership between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will come on Monday at Melbourne Park in preparation for the Australian Open starting on January 12. A family skiing trip, which had been booked long before Djokovic made his approach over the phone in November, meant that Murray was unable to attend this week’s Brisbane International — where Djokovic suffered a disappointing quarter-final defeat by America’s Reilly Opelka on Friday — but he is due to depart for Australia on Sunday evening.

Observing these two former rivals working together at the Australian Open will be fascinating. A ten-day training block was held behind closed doors last month at Djokovic’s residence near Marbella, Spain, during which the secrets of his success were shared with Murray for the first time.

“The ten days that we spent together were terrific,” Djokovic said. “I enjoyed every bit of it. He’s very meticulous, he’s very dedicated, so professional. It doesn’t surprise me because I’ve known him so many years as a player.”

Despite his retirement, Murray is going to be one of the most visible tennis faces in Australia this month. As well as being seen in the front row of Djokovic’s coaching box, he is the star of an Uber Eats advert which will run throughout the Australian Open’s national television coverage."

Tim Henman interview. “I’m so excited about the Laver Cup because of the event itself, and the best players from Team Europe and the team world going at it. But there’s a finite period. The television work I do is structured. It’s around specific events and that balance, for me, is perfect. But that’s horses for courses. Andy didn’t necessarily enjoy the media stuff and always wanted to get into coaching. I advised him to take his time … and the next week, he took a job [with Novak Djokovic]. I’ll say no more.”

I had hoped to add the article from yesterday's Guardian or the BBC website, but it wouldn't allow me to do it as usual. I can only add the All England Club have announced plans to hopefully expand the famous hill and to increase the capacity by 20% for the 2027 tournament.

I've watched Andy being Agony Andy at Queens on the LTA website. It reminded me of when ITV used to get celebrities to sit in a TV studio and be given questions to ask another celebrity in 'An evening with ....'
