BBC - ATP Tour announces Saudi Arabia 'strategic partnership'
ht tps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/68429213
"The ATP has announced a "multi-year strategic partnership" with Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund as the state increases its involvement in professional tennis.
The ATP rankings, plus the year-end world number one award, will be named after Saudi's Public Investment Fund.
PIF on-court branding will be seen at some of the ATP Tour's biggest events, starting at Indian Wells next month.
The value of PIF's investment in the men's tour has not been revealed.
"Our strategic partnership with PIF marks a major moment for tennis," said ATP chief executive Massimo Calvelli.
"It's a shared commitment to propel the future of the sport."
PIF will also sponsor Tour events in Miami, Madrid and Beijing - part of the ATP 1000 circuit, the highest level beneath the Grand Slam events - as well as the season-ending ATP Finals.
Grass-court events held in the UK - including Queen's and Eastbourne - were also offered an on-court sponsorship deal with PIF, but the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) turned the opportunity down in January.
Saudi Arabia has invested huge amounts of money into football, golf, Formula 1 and boxing in recent years.
But the nation has long been criticised for its poor human rights record, particularly about its treatment of women and criminalisation of homosexuality."

Rafael Nadal will not be playing Wimbledon this year.
He's planning to play Bastad (clay) ahead of participation at the Olympics (also on clay) in Paris.

A pity but not a great surprise and I think for the best, at least Rafa will have a send off at the Davis Cup. Whilst Djokovic is set to play next season it will soon be the end of an era.

Jannik Sinner has just beaten Novak Djokovic to take the ATP1000 title in Shanghai and ensure he ends the year as #1.

A good win for Sinner and his 7th title this season, Djokovic played well in the first but Jannik stronger in the Breaker and Novak was not really the same force afterwards.

and the latest farcical announcement from the world of Grand Slams - the mixed event at the US Open will be held prior to the start of the main event, limited to 16 teams, reduced to needing only 4 games to win a set with no-ad scoring at deuce, and 3rd set being a 10 point MTB. While they are at it, they could perhaps wear fancy dress, and at my club we have those doubles events where after two games you change partner and play with one of the players you played against. Finally, they have a panel of judges who rate the players according to artistic ability, and the two lowest teams have to play each other in a playoff to remain in the competition.
Surely they could do the pretournament mixed doubles as an exhibition event and still keep the proper one later. It is crackers.
Diego Schwarzman has retired.
Gael Monfils has announced he'll be retiring at the end of next year's season.
Well, I got the 2 finalists right for the women in Shanghai (Coco and Pegula) but the male finalists badly wrong! Thought the youngsters might be overcome by nerves but their determination to play their best was rewarded. Well done to the two cousins - what an achievement! x

Certainly a number of upsets in Shanghai (the men's event) ,not as many even if a few upsets for the women in Wuhan (Coco taking it). At times very challenging conditions, Sinner had to retire and Alcaraz pulled out at the last minute. At one point looked like it might favour Djokovic but he had some fitness issues. Nonetheless amazing tennis from qualifier Vacherot (who was not even in the qualies draw until a few pulled out) and has won the title over his cousin Rinderknech 4-6,6-3,6-3. An amazing story and a fairytale ending ! Arthur though was ailing a bit and obviously disappointed to miss the chance. Still had some big wins over Zverev and Medvedev ,Valentin had success over Bublik,Rune and Djokovic.
