View Full Version : AUSTRALIAN OPEN 14-28th Jan 2024 - Sunday start
Rafael Nadal's comeback stalls as the hip injury he obtained in Brisbane rules him out of the AO.
I noticed Oliver Crawford now plays for us at the Aussie Open qualifying rounds. Why did he switch his allegiance?
The draw is tonight at 2.00 am UK time (1 pm Australian time).

A better night for the Brits so far, with Cam and Katie both through in straights, and Jack won a five setter from 2-1 down.
Well done to Emma Raducanu, who won in straight sets.
Dan having a battle on court 3. He won the first set and lost the next 2. Sonego serving 5-6 in the fourth. Dan had the trainer on at some point.

Sadly Dan lost the match in the 4th set tie-break.
Sonego wins 4'6, 7'6, 6'2, 7'6
Jack is up against Tommy Paul next, not an easy one.
Cameron is up against qualifier Zeppieri next
Alcaraz, if he keeps on winning, possibly looming in the third and fourth round if Jack and Cameron win their next one or two rounds
oop for Wednesday - ht tps://ausopen.com/schedule#!40007
I hope Jack doesn't throw up again like he did today.
Cam comes from two sets down to advance against a qualifier, but Jack lost in 4 sets to Tommy Paul. He'll be disappointed as he had a load of set points in the 4th set, and then was broken after failing to take any of them.
Katie Boulter lost in straights, but gave a good account of herself. She was a break up in the second set but didn't win another game from 3-2 up.
Emma coming up next.
Emma lost in 3, struggled physically and had loads of UEs.
It is 3.22am Friday in Melbourne and Ruusuvouri and Medvedev are in the fifth set!! Ridiculous!!
Indeed - their cunning plan wasn't so cunning after all!
I understand why they do it, but any tournament with a night session is prone to this.
They should start the day session on Rod Laver an hour earlier. play starts at UK time 1 pm, while most of the other courts start at 12 noon. It would have helped a bit.

It’s ridiculous and really scuppers the chances of the winner winning again
Cam 2 sets to 1 up on Casper Ruud and playing well.
Make that 2 sets to 1 and a break!
Cam wins! We'll have British representation in the second week in the singles.
Cam will be playing the winner of Zverev and Michelson in the fourth round (on Rod Laver later today). Ruud was the highest ranked player Cam has beaten in a grand slam.
So delighted about Cameron reaching the fourth round at the Aussie Open for the first time.
Cam played brilliantly!! :GBflag::bravo:
Zverev won in straights so will play Cam in the last 16.

certainly was a great performance from Cameron, looked like the tide was possibly turning in the third was soon back on track-fabulous! Need to see if he can have another big win mind you.
A surprise with Dimitrov going down to the 69th ranked Borges 6-7,6-4,6-2,7-6.
oop for Monday - ht tps://ausopen.com/schedule#!40012
Cameron vs Zverev not before 5.00 on Margaret Court Arena.

A great effort from Cameron but unfortunately did not do too well in the final set breaker as Zverev took it 7-5,3-6,6-3,4-6,7-6(10-3) . certainly positives to take though, was set and break down early on. was unable to get on here yesterday, today Djokovic beat Fritz in 4 sets. on previous ocassions if reached semi has been the champion , maybe Sinner have other ideas if he wns later.
Late start again for the night match tonight between Rublev and Sinner. Starting at 10.40 pm in Aus time. Yet play for the quarterfinals earlier in the day started an hour later than usual.

They need to have another think about how to avoid the late night/early morning finishing times. (It is good that access to AMFF is ok after yesterday's problem.)
At least tomorrow they have not put on a legends doubles match before the quarters - maybe they have learnt their lesson from today.
After what can only really be described as a disappointing tournament for the Brits, at least we'll have one finalist, as Neal Skupski makes the mixed doubles final with partner Desirae Krawczyk.

Great for Neal and Desirae!
Alcaraz was 2 sets and a break down to Zverev in the third with Zverev serving for the match. Broken back and serving to stay in the match.
Alcaraz has woken up and got the crowd behind him and has taken the third set.

Zverev through

An impressive performance overall from Zverev who found a high level much of the tme, disappounting though that Alcaraz was misfiring in the first two sets and could not maintain momentum in the 4th.
Is that the only player that can beat Djokovic out?

I remember Andy in a massive battle with Nadal (I think) (semis?) at the AO ( I think) and losing but it being significant at the time because he showed he could play at the level of the others. This is significant for Zverev.
I’m not so bothered about Djokovic being beaten as I think it’s nice to see the old ones still the ones to beat
oop for Thursday - ht tps://ausopen.com/schedule#!40015
Both ladies semis in the evening session. The mixed final is on Friday as well as the 2 men's semis.
Not sure if Zverev could beat Djokovic as he has so many long matches and won't have so much in the tank by the final. Also in pain playing with blood under his toe nails and needing trainer. Medvedev has had some long matches too, so not as much in the tank for him either.
Zverev took 5 sets to beat Cam compared to 4 to beat Alcaraz.
Don't rule out Sinner getting the better of Djokovic.....h2h 4-2 to Novak so not a rout for the Serb.
Zverev also had a 5 setter against Klein in his first round.
Just had a quick check and it looks like Sinner has not lost a set yet, so could be fresher than the others.
oop for Friday - ht tps://ausopen.com/schedule#!40016
Sinner certainly has the game for it so far...
He leads 6-1 6-2!
Krawczyk/Skupski lose the mixed doubles final.
Djokovic saves a match point and takes the third set 7-6(6).

Come on Jannik, you can do this
Sallydaisy
26-01-2024, 07:42
WOW!!!!!
Sinner d Djokovic 6'1, 6'2, 6'7(6), 6'3
Sinner will be the freshest of the lot, whoever wins the second semi, in terms of number of sets played.
Yay! I said not to count him out!
Nessie is going to be pleased. She gatecrashed into another tennis bracket by mistake and is in the lead and chosen Sinner.

I was surprised at the score!

Fabulous performamce from Sinner, Djokovic wasn a bit out of sorts in the early stages mind you. Still Jannik showed great memtal strength after missing the match point in the third. Medvevdev came back from two sets down to end the hopes of Zverev 5-7,3-6,7-6,7-6,6-3 in a lengthy encounter and been on court roughly 7 hours longer.
We have a match now. Sinner taken the third set. Score 6-3 6-3 4-6 to Medvedev so far.
2 sets all. A real match now.
Two sets all!! Go Sinner
Medvedev has played 31 sets, more sets than anyone else in an Ozzy Open in the open era. Also broken the record for hours spent on court. Has he got enough left in the tank to beat Sinner?
Sinner now in the lead at 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 1-0 - on serve in the fifth.
Sinner breaks, and all that time on court looks to have caught up with Medvedev.
Well done Sinner :yahoo:
Sinner won 142 points and Medvedev 141 points. So close.
From the ATP website - ht tps://www.atptour.com/en/news/medvedev-sinner-australian-open-2024-final
With his win, Sinner became the first Italian man to win a Slam since Adriano Panatta in 1976 and just the third Italian man in history. The World No. 4, who lost just one set en route to the final, ended Novak Djokovic’s 33-match winning streak at the AO in the semi-final and after beating Medvedev has now won 20 of his past 21 tour-level matches. The 22-year-old has also won 10 of his past 11 matches against Top 5 opponents after beating Medvedev.

it certainly became an exciting final, some fightback from Sinner who raised his level under pressure and whilst at one point looked like it might not be his day felt he had the advantage if he coud take it to a 5th. obviously Medvedev's tough route took its toll in the end but got to credit Jannik's mental strength. Whilst bit of a bitter blow for Daniil wanted Sinner to take his first slam particularly after the win over Djookovic.
