My dad's going to have a CT scan and then a memory test in January. Last Thursday, we had a meal at a golf club in Exeter. It was so posh that it felt like we were having a meal at Buckingham Palace. After we'd finished our main meal, my dad told everyone that he'd wished he could have licked the plate.

I went for my annual hip check on Wednesday, only to find that whilst the hip is continuing its slow deterioration, both my knees have decided to get in on the action. Horrible signs of Osteo Arthritis in both. Not impressed. I thought my next op would be a revision hip replacement, now it looks like my knees are going to get there first. The next couple of years until we get there, are going to be a literal pain.

Hope it is OK. I had a boiler put in on a free grant 10 years ago (no choice in brand) and it was nothing but trouble, needing repairing annually and leaking water often. I ended up having to get a new boiler a few weeks ago - but I did my research and chose a reliable brand with a 7 year guarantee. Fingers crossed.

They came yesterday but still needed a part so am hoping to go home and find they've been today .... but I've not heard anything as yet .... it was freezing last night - lots of candles to try and warm the living room but the rest of the house was freezing ... we don't qualify for a free boiler - hubby checked .... at least we've got hot water.

Oh no Teresa, not good - hate living with knee pain all the time - mine can't be fixed though .... at least I know there's no signs of arthritis in mine ... and I'll not be having any more knee surgery ....

My washing machine caught fire yesterday! Luckily I was at home - I had been just about to go out - otherwise I would have got home to find my house burnt down. The fire brigade put out the fire but my house was full of smoke and everything is covered in soot. The insurance company have told me not to start cleaning until their assessor has been!

Last week, my dad went for a CT scan and a memory test. I was later told, he'd got a mild form of alzheimer's disease.

The good news, for me, is an adopted cousin on my dad's side of the family who lives in Tacoma, Washington, is coming over to London in March and wants to meet up. I haven't seen her for a few years.

Is that why it's known as a murder of crows?
I think I remember being told once that they are the only known bird to hold court and pronounce death on another if found guilty.
Or was that rooks? Can't remember now. Damn brain.

Not sure, Jagmad - maybe. I think the fact that there was the carcass of a dead kid lying nearby probably had something to do with it.

A strange thing happened in my family this week. My sister died which was very sad for the whole family but really not sad for her as she had been suffering with dementia for some time and had really had no quality of life for the last 18 months. She would have been 90 in June and had had a very full life. The odd thing was that her great granddaughter was born later that day, although she was not due for another 3 or 4 weeks. It was lovely to have something to celebrate on such a sad day but it did rather feel rather strange - almost as though it was written in the stars!

Sorry to hear about your sister Alis - Dementia is a horrible illness - I hope the good news provided some comfort. When my dad died, my half sister gave birthday to my niece Becky, 3 weeks early, 2 days later. It was exactly what we needed - a ray of hope. Now 16 years later becky’s birthday still brings comfort and joy and washed away any sadness from the anniversary of the death. Sending you love and hugs xx

At least it looks like the stone facade at least has been saved and reports are that it is not looking as bad as they first thought. At least all the priceless artifacts were not there as in safekeeping whilst the previous roof renovations were being done.

I hope we will at least be able to see the outside when we're there at the end of May as I have never been to Paris before.

Today has been a big day! Before the fire I agreed to the great Manchester Run for a charity music in hospitals and care. The provide live music, to vulnerable people to provide comfort and relief. It is a great help for many form sufferers of dementia, to cancer patients to the lullaby hour for newborns. Studies repeatedly show the positive effect of music on mental and physical health.

After the fire I was so stressed, but sleeping very well and had so much on with the repairs - I didn’t get to the gym or go on runs. Before I knew it the run was 3 weeks away and I was exhausted just thinking about it. I considered pulling out and my wonderful friends told me it would be understandable with everything but I decided to it anyway if I had to jog or walk bits. Getting back to them I realised how out of shape I was after a long absence and also how much you use your arms when running. I have tendinitis again so bending my arm is a pain. I had to take the train because I can’t drive for that long yet so and where we got there it looked like rain. So I really didn’t think it was going to go well. I had visions of walking the whole way soaked to the bone lol.

Anyway the weather picked up so it was boiling. I Did the run and though not near my PB I completed it with a mixture of running and jogging. I am so glad now that I didn’t give in and pull out and saw it through. I didn’t go back on my word despite the fire and so I am more like my old self than I have been in months. So all in I happy for that :) now I just need to get back to my pre fire fitness. If anyone would like to sponsor there is still time even though the event is over. Just pm and I will send you the link or you can find it on my Facebook page or search for it on just giving. My race mate and friend Henna set up a joint page while I was dealing with the fire stuff so it’s under her name - Henna Lemetyinen :)
Now home and time for tea and tennis :)

Last month, I received a phone call from one of those automated voices saying I'm a paedophile and, since I've been looking at pornographic websites, my internet would be cut off. The next two days, I received the same phone call. Luckily, I got to go on holiday to London to watch the athletics. When I arrived back, the person must have got bored as the phone calls had stopped. Then, earlier this week, they started again. I haven't picked up the phone since the first one and I've been complaining to the TPS about it. They started at three a day and now they're down to one a day.

Though I kept complaining to the TPS, they never seemed to take it seriously enough. So, today, I contacted my broadband provider and them about the weirdo. They were extremely sympathetic about my situation. They told me, the next time that the person called, to put the phone down and dial 1572 and the phone number should get blocked. Also, to get a new phone, one which has the caller's number displayed on the phone. They could only put a 'protect phone line' onto my phone and monitor it.

My dad's Alzheimer's disease is getting worse. Apart from the coughing, which he's now had for about one and a half years, he just sits in his chair and burps all day. He claims everyone else is rude, if anyone has a go at him about it. My mum had to vote for him, for his postal vote, as he doesn't know what to do anymore. He just signed his name. Last Friday was my mum's birthday and last Saturday was their 51st wedding anniversary. He, somehow, had managed to buy her a card but couldn't spell her name correctly. My sister wanted to take us out to a restaurant last Sunday. But, my dad didn't want to go as he really wanted to stay in and watch the TV (as usual). Instead, he pretended to be ill.

The more you read about people's experiences with Alzheimers, the more you realise that there are so many differing symptoms for sufferers. It takes endless patience to deal with loved ones who no longer behave in a cognitive way, and who often don't accept people trying to care for them.

Aw James, I am so sorry. It is indeed sad for you, especially now, and it was a tough watch for you these last few months. I know, because my mum had dementia and it was cruel. Those memories you mentioned will become very precious and a great source of comfort for you. Sending you hugs and I will be thinking about you over these next few weeks.

Hello all. Been so long since I logged in here, I almost forgot my PW. 2020 off to a bumpy start. On 2 Jan, my very best friend lost her husband very suddenly and unexpectedly. Aged 62, he was so very hale and hearty and had a wonderful Christmas. On 2 Jan, he went out clay pigeon shooting, but never came home. My poor friend is devastated. It was such a shock and these last 10 days or so have been a living nightmare. I did manage to dip into the tennis a bit, esp during the night when I couldn't sleep, but found it hard to concentrate.

Can anyone give any advice to me for my next door neighbour. Since, last Sunday, he's had a squirrel living in the alcove of his roof. He's seen the squirrel, twice, but it won't come out. He's put something there, which there he thought the squirrel might not like the smell of but it won't move. Any ideas?

A whole family not out at church this morning as 2 have tested positive after being at a wedding last Saturday. They have both had both vaccines but had to go to hospital as the young mummy needed help to breathe and has been put on steroids. She does suffer from asthma but is generally healthy. We are all supposed to be going to the lakes next week together and this is just a wee reminder, if needed, that covid is still out there.

Yes I just searched Olympics on sky and it's coming up for every day from Sat/Sun onwards. It gives the details of what is on each day, only when you click on it, not in the title. I will be waiting until the first day that shows tennis and then recording series from then. Also recording highlights from every day!
