According to Mr Harman, Mr Lendl won't be going to Indian Wells.

Neil Harman ‏ @NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/#%21/NeilHarmanTimes) Just to let Marcus Buckland know that Ivan Lendl will NOT be in Indian Wells.

Again? Hmmm....not sure about that as a plan...!

Again? Hmmm....not sure about that as a plan...!

My take on it is that they're already focussing on the next Slam and Andy's clay-court game.

So, it's not surprising he'd not be at IW, but that Lendl would be at Miami, since he lives nearby. Thereafter, the relationship will be all systems go...with RG in mind.

I hope am not being too thick, but surely Ivan being Andy's full time coach, means he would be
at Indian Wells? my opinion is Andy missed his mentor today and am not sure turning up
as and when is going to benefit Andy or am I completely missing something ?

Ivan isn't a full time coach. He'll be involved in training blocks through the year (as agreed between the 2 of them) and be with Andy at certain events - some of the Masters and Grand Slams.

For example: he intends to work with Andy in the early part of the clay court season but might not be at Roland Garros because he feels the hard work needs to go in ahead of the Slams.

Ivan is based in Florida - hence the trip Andy made out there after the OZ Grand Slam.
Whatever he is doing it's something he and Andy have agreed on for now.
:)

See Robin Soderling is in the entry list. Is he better?

I'd be shocked if he plays - he can't even train for longer than 30 minutes without getting tired. Surprising that he's still on the entry list though.

I'm sure that Andy & Ivan will be in touch with each other on a very regular basis & that this is all part of a plan. I don't think Andy is at the stage that he needs his hand held all the time. I'm also sure that Ivan will be carefully analizing all Andy's matches & will be giving advice as to what he thinks might help. Their coaching relationship is at an early stage & will develop as time goes on. I have the utmost faith that they will be doing the very best they can to make this work. Keep the faith.

Andy is on his way to Indian Wells according to the bottom end of this report (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/9121115/Andy-Murray-is-beaten-but-not-bowed-after-losing-to-Roger-Federer-in-straight-sets-in-the-Dubai-final.html)from the Telegraph.

Murray was out, but he wasn’t down, because he remembers how bleak things had been in the early springtime of his last two seasons.

As he said afterwards: “I’m just happy with the week, because at this stage last year I was in a very different position, a different frame of mind.

“It’s a very important period for me, this one coming up,” he added, “because I struggled there [in Indian Wells and Miami] the last couple of years. I’m going to get over there early, get some good practice in.”

And off he went, straight to the airport for a night flight to Los Angeles.

RoastLamb
04-03-2012, 04:20
That's a LONG flight to LA. Then the drive to Indian Wells on top of it.

Feel so sorry for Soderling. :grouphug: And I don't even like him but I hate to see him have to be out of the tour for so long, must be awful for him.

I am sure they are doing the best they can practically. They made an arrangement for this period together and of course it had to take Ivan's life into consideration. If it becomes clear that Ivan being there at the tail end of GSs is important, hopefully they can adjust in the future.
I personally feel having Lendl there for the potential GS matches SF and F against the top four does make a difference, and no matter how much coaching and preparation is done, you can't dial in the inspiration you get at 5-5 in the fifth set from looking at the multiple GS winner in your box and being reminded of what you have discussed.

Bit of a surprise at the exhibition taking place at Madison Square Gardens last night, Roddick beat Federer 7-5, 7-6! Though of course Fed may have been a bit jaded having just arrived 2 days ago and it would likely be a different story in a tour event. However, still a bit of a boost for Andy R after his indifferent form of late.

Alis
06-03-2012, 08:40
Doesn't really surprise me - lots of factors in the mix here. Fed had just arrived from Dubai and, even though he believes he is super-human, must have been suffering from jet lag. ARod has been playing in the States, is match fit and was also in front of his home crowd. We don't know how fast the surface was - if it was slow it would favour ARod. It was an exhibition and not a tour event - Fed would have been paid plenty to appear and really wouldn't have been that interested in the result. Certainly a good boost for ARod but not a lot to get excited about.

JAMES4578
06-03-2012, 10:28
Reports said it was a fast court. I recorded the match as it was shown on ESPN and will see it later. Roddick had certainly been playing in the States but is only 4-4 for the year and trails Fed 2-21 in the H2H, this result won't be included. Sharapova and Wozniacki also played an exhibition match with Maraia Maria winning in straight sets. Plenty of cash for playing these events but I'm glad that Murray wasn't involved so close to the main event.

Wardy is seeded 23 and plays Maxime Authom in R1.
Interesting that it's a Belgian player bearing in mind our upcoming DC tie in April.
;)

This particular chap is WR212 (CH198 in Feb 2012) and he reached the Quarter-Final of the Bergamo Challenger last week having come through 3 rounds of Qualifying).

If Wardy comes through (and in theory he has the game to do so) he'll probably meet Pospisil in R2.
Winner of that goes through to the I/Wells main draw .......

Various snippets from twitter and MTF.

BOOM. Potential third round blockbuster between No. 27 Milos Raonic and No. 3 Roger Federer

Delpo gets Verdasco in r32.

Andy Roddick could get Karlovic in R2, Berdych in R3. In Djokovic's quarter.
Anderson the first seed Novak could face.
Novak Djokovic first plays the winner of a match between two qualifiers

First round men's matches: Tursunov-Kudla, Chardy-Baghdatis, Llodra-Gulbis, Dodig-Dimitrov, Young-Darcis

Rafael Nadal's projected fourth round is No. 15 Feliciano Lopez. Lopez gets tough R2 against Baghdatis-Chardy winner
Nalbandian on Nadal's side of draw. Danger man for Rafa - always plays him tough. Dolgo also in Nadal's quarter.
Rafael Nadal first faces the winner of Alejandro Falla and Leonardo Mayer

Comeback kid Marin Cilic gets tough draw: possible Nalbandian R2 then Tipsarevic R3

Alexandr Dolgopolov gets Young-Darcis winner, then Feliciano Lopez, then possibly Nadal.

Sallydaisy
06-03-2012, 23:56
Kei Nishikori gets Sock-Giraldo winner first, then possible R3 against Almagro, R4 against Berdych.

Federer's draw looks interesting:-
Kudla/Tursunov, Raonic, Monfils, Delpo/Ferrer, Nadal, Djokovic/Murray

Ryan Harrison gets Cipolla first, then Troicki, then potentially an Australia rematch against Andy Murray.

No word yet our 'oor Andy's R2 oppo!

Sallydaisy
07-03-2012, 00:03
Ben Rotheburg tweet:

Andy Murray's first potential seeded clash is a French Open rematch against Viktor Troicki.
So, that'd be in the R32.

The full draw isn't up yet so we still don't know Andy's path to the Final but it's looking like:-

R1 - Bye
R2 - ?
R3 - Troicki (Harrison?)
R4 - Simon [13] or ?
QF - Fish
SF - Djokovic
F - Rafa or Roger

Seems a reasonable draw for Andy, though of course Masters events are never straightforward. If both Andy and Isner reach thew quarters that could be a tricky one and Fish could could also be a challenge in the States, even if he's not been playing so well lately. However I'm glad he's avoided Tsonga or Berych in his quarter who may face Rafa and Nole respectively. Not looking any further atm, though of course Andy could well face Nole in another semi.Fed indeed doesn't have the luck of the draw this time but of course could still rise to the challenge.

Very disappointing that Ward could only win 3 games against Authom in the qualifying, James is struggling somewhat atm!:sad:

Having said that, still a good draw for Andy until SF. But that dreaded first match first!

Fish knocked out Federer in 2008 in IW and knocked out Andy in Miami in 2010. So not someone to be taken lightly, especially as Andy doesn't find it easy to play against him. But Fish has hardly won any back-to-back matches for months and hopefully Andy won't be in his post-AO slump form this time round.

It looks like a good draw for Andy, I'm pleased that he's avoided the big hitters in his section of the draw. Disappointed that Delpo is in Federer's section yet again! - and that Delpo/Ferrer may meet in the fourth round - two of my favourites.

Rafa's draw looks ok apart from Tsonga in the QF and I should think he'll be pleased to have drawn Federer instead of Andy in the SFs. Nole's draw also looks fine apart from Berdych though the head-to-head there is very much in Nole's favour (8-1).

Not too bad a draw it seems this tourney for Andy though Fish may be a wee banana skin! One step at a time! Hoping Fed draw will cause much trouble for him!

Apart from his stellar performance at the Davis Cup, Fish really hasn't posted many good results recently. I can't help but feel that his place in the limelight is a thing of the past - I will be surprised if Fish makes it to the quarters.

Andy is as good as any of these top guys, but it's a different matter when his serves desert him and he goes walkies, loses focus and makes too many U/E. It does not matter what draw he finds himself in, last year lose in the first round, in Dubai struggled in first and second round then found his feet and made the finals. He has to come out all guns blazing like he did against Novak and Berdych last week otherwise not a hope in hell to beat any of the players. Prove me wrong Andy please.

yes pabbers - agree....
having gone out to Donald Young in the 2nd round last year!! -
it will be great just to see Andy get through safely to the next round against Garcia-Lopez or Machado!! -
however -
Andy definately in a much better place this time round - with the form he showed last week!!

Today's OOP are top half of the draw matches (well, I haven't checked them all, but I have checked a few), so it is looking fairly likely that Andy's first match will be on Saturday.

OOP (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Scores/Live-Schedule.aspx?EventId=404)for Thursday 8th March 2012.
I/Wells is 8hrs behind the UK so an 11am start there is 7pm here.

The ATP are not showing it in an easily copyable format so I'm not inclined to type the whole lot out ...
I'll wait until Saturday's to type up the main show courts once the seeded players are in action.

The Ladies main draw event started yesterday so today is the 2nd half Ladies R1 and top half R1 for the Men (per Madeline above ^^^).

These are the guys in R1 action, in draw order, but not in order of how they'll be on court.

Q Andrey Golubev vs Q Rik De Voest (RSA) Court 8
Matthias Bachinger (GER) vs Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) Court 8

Robin Haase (NED) vs Pablo Andujar (ESP) Court 7
Albert Ramos (ESP) vs (WC)Jesse Levine (USA) Stadium 2

That's probably because Andy Roddick is in the top half of the draw and my bet would be that his R2 match will be the popcorn event on Saturday! If we're being realistic A-Rod's career is now on the wane but he's still held in regard so even if he ain't the top billing there are other high ranking Americans e.g. Fish and Isner in the top half of the draw.

Hmmm, just noticed that Tursunov didn't make it onto court to play his R1 match. he's been replaced in the draw by Tobias Kamke who is currently thrashing Denis Kudla. The German lost in R2 of Qualifying (to Amer Delic) so has had a couple of matches practice already. However, I'm surprised the American/Ukrainian isn't doing better.

Del Potro/Verdasco was a good match - Verdasco had a lot of chances in the second set but got too nervous when it really mattered. Delpo is in really good form at the moment.

Ferrer lost to Istomin 6-4, 6-3. :( It's a surprise defeat although Ferrer has played a lot of tennis recently.

Not quite the same when Andy loses early, but I am interested and watch it when I get in at night. I watched Isner ,Djokovic and Simon last night as well as quite a bit of Stosur/Petrova on the other side which became dramatic in the end. A big shock as Istomin put out Ferrer in straights. Mind you David has been playing on clay, though of course it's pretty slow here anyway! Nando really should have taken the 2nd set but Del Potro in good form.

Ferrer played the clay events in Argentina and Mexico - probably not the best preparation for IW, but he never does well there anyway so probably the best decision for him. He got valuable points and will be well-prepared for the clay court season. If the north American tournaments had the entry list of Dubai then they would be ideal preparation for IW - as it stands though I'm not so sure whether competing against lower-ranked players really is the best preparation (although no jetlag is a definite plus point).

I've taped the highlights of Fed/Raonic to watch later - I've not seen Milos play much before so looking forward to seeing the match. Pleased to see Ana Ivanovic beat Caroline Wozniacki - that's a huge win for her after a couple of tough years. :)

Yes I feel sorry for her too, she's a nice person and doesn't deserve a lot of the flack she gets from the press. She's always seemed very mentally tough so hopefully she won't rapidly slide down the rankings like some of the other players have done.

Depends how you look at it. Acapulco (the same week as Dubai) is on clay and probably the better tournament of the 2 to prepare for the very slow surface at Indian Wells. Even Andy said it was like playing on clay there in his presser after he lost to GGL.

Apart from Ferrer the Spaniards are doing unusually well, maybe reinforcing what Andy said about it being like playing on clay.

Linda
14-03-2012, 22:22
Yes, I mentioned the other day that the Spaniards were doing well - apart from Floppy who soon went out, and he prefers a fast court. It does seem that this court is so slow that it plays almost like clay.

Ooh, couldn't be better - two of my favourite players on court (Rafa & Dolly) and also my favourite umpire (Molay)! :cheer:

Certainly Fed has been taken the distance in the last two matches, but still finding a way through. Wonder if Del Potro can change his recent track record. By contrast been comfortable for Nadal thus far and he's also still going strong in the doubles with Lopez.

Katie
15-03-2012, 10:04
Fed's not been well this week so has done well to get through the last two matches. Delpo's definitely got a good chance to beat him here, I hope he does as otherwise he'll be 0-4 to him already this year.

I have a feeling that Rafa may win the title here - he's playing great and the IW surface really suits his game. Maybe it's here that he's going to beat Nole again?

I was watching Tsonga and Nalby which went the distance, so didn't see Nadal and Dolly! However, looking like Rafa was really impressive! I'm certainly a fan of Tssonga and pity he faded somewhat, after being pretty much in control. Nalby played well once given the chance but think Jo would in all likelihood have given Rafa a better match. Nole stepped it up tonight though with Almagro and could still find his best form at the right time! Nico had his moments but just wasn't consistent enough.

Tsonga lost that match. He was 30-0 up serving for the match at 5-4. He lost the plot.

Anyway, Rafa (and Marc) made the dubs final, well done! Hopefully they'll play my Danny boy. I only have those two to cheer for now so I hope they both make it to the end.
