Place(s) kept back in the draw for players who end up in the Semi or Final of an event the week before which would prevent them from attending Qualifying rounds if their ranking merited it. i.e. someone doing waaaaaaaay better than normal gets a 'free' entry into the next tournament.
During the week before Dubai starts the TD (tournament director) will keep an eye on progress in the previous week's tournaments. If the SE spots aren't needed they are 'released' back and the spaces taken in order by those on the Alternate list.AH thanks

I really wish he would forget all about Dubai
the time zone is wrong,
he would be far better basing himself in America from mid to late Feb through to End March
obviously this would be hard with family, friends and pets based in England but think he really needs to do this especially with Lendal based in America too
the scenario with Lendal is probably be present at Slam's plus some Masters and at the end of a phone when either or both of them feel the need

But Maggie and Rusty have got pet passports now so there's no reason really why they don't travel to the States with Andy and be based at his Miami flat for 5/6 weeks. The fitness guys who travel with Andy could surely give the pups a good run every day!!!
That'd give Kim a bit of peace too!!!
;)
think he will kip it, just a bit premature to hand n his sick line

Nothing to stop him asking for a Wild Card into San Jose w/c 13th or Memphis w/c 20th to test out the tweaky back and see if it is OK for Dubai and beyond.

I can understand Andy wanting to touch base in the UK after being away from home in Miami in December and Australia in January.
But having a home in the US in the same state as where Ivan also has a home, Dubai is increasing looking like shorthand for Dubi..ous!

Is Andy definitely playing Dubai?

Is Andy definitely playing Dubai?
I guess we'd have to assume he is until and unless we hear otherwise. The ATP rules are that if a player withdraws he must notify the Tournament Director (TD) and ATP official first before word gets out anywhere else; there are penalties if players don't follow that procedure.

Would personally be very happy if he does, even if he gets the zero pointer. Being with Ivan on or off court as much as possible is the order of the day at the moment!

Personally I think all being well, Andy needs to get back on the match court to put the training into practice and I'd rather he played an event before the Masters events in the States. Though obviously it wouldn't be the end of the world if he did skip Dubai.

Must say you took the words right out of my mouth and I totally agree. He needs to do a bit of practice with Lendl then put that into practice on the court where it doesn't matter too much, ahead of the Masters tournies. Get back on the horse as it were and lets see how he's looking this year compared to the previous 2 years after the Oz Open.
Andy has said on his facebook page that he is flying to Dubai with the guys today.
Yep, I agree with you James and Pat. Back on the match court would be good, before IW. Lets hope there is none of the slump we have seen the last 2 years .... I would be VERY surprised if there was this year TBH.

So exciting that Andy is now in Dubai. Can't wait to see him in action again next week!
Might have to get sky sports switched back on earlier than planned!!
No Nadal in Dubai, the expectation is that Federer is ranked 2 and AM 3, so that a SF Federer/Murray is possible. Would be very interesting!
Hadn't thought of that - it would be interesting!

With Andy's luck, He'll get Novak in the semis!!:grrr:
When one is seeded #3, to win one must face seeded 1 or 2 to win it so it does not matter. GOOD LUCK ANDY.
I'd like Andy to play Fed in the semis - it's been such a long time since they last played.

A good run in Dubai would be nice and it would keep the tournament organisers sweet as they've had more than one run in over the years, but IW and Miami are by far the most important tournaments. Match time is what I'm looking for, if he wins then that's an added bonus.

Must admit I'd like to save that for Indian Wells or Miami, otherwise, in RF's mindset it "won't really count" (unless he wins of course).
I'm here in Dubai, staying with my son for a week or so, and have got tickets for Tuesday and Wednesday so it would be great to see Andy again but I don't mind as long as there are some good matches. I think this will be another great year for him.

Unfortunately, with Rafa playing Indian Wells and Miami, Andy is unlikely to meet Fed until the final - so probably not likely to meet him at all.

You are right, though unless Nole has limitless energy again, it is normally very hard to win back-to-back Master's.
Susieq - Have a great time and if you could give some local feedback, much appreciated.

Yep but gives Andy another shot at Nole ahead of the really big tournies. He and Lendl may have come up with a plan and this may give him the opportunity to try to implement it - assuming they both get that far of course (anti-jinxing at the ready!).

Here's the full draw (http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2012/495/mds.pdf). Davydenko in the 2nd round looks interesting...
That's a tough draw for Andy - Davydenko and Berdych have always been difficult opponents for him. Novak's half looks easy in comparison - can't see him failing to reach the semis. Fed's is difficult on paper, with Tsonga and Delpo in his section although he does have good records against both of them.

Mind you Tipsy beat Nole at WTF so anything is possible. Not that I'd put my shirt on it though.

True, though Novak wasn't really that focused at the WTFs this year - Ferrer beat him as well. Tipsy often has chances in their matches though.
Nole wasn't Nole at the WTF - as Rafa wasn't Rafa and Andy wasn't Andy! Andy never gets much luck with the draw but if he's on form he should be more than a match for Davy and Berdych. He really needs to beat Berdych because he's lost to him the last twice that they've met I think - this will give him the chance to lay that particular ghost - then bring on Novak!
Does anyone know if Marko Djokovic is the middle brother or the youngest one?

Tough draw for Andy but prefer him to be in Nole's half than the Fed's.

Awful draw for Andy. Davy is playing very well altho' he did retire this past week in his match. And Berdbrain. Djokovic. Barf. I'm sure Fed is happy.
Fed will be extremely happy to have avoided Andy in the semis. Though he also has one or two possibly tough matches in his draw.
Hopefully we're going to see a very new and improved Andy and certainly not the one of the last couple of years. Just the latter alone without him actually winning the tournie would be enough for me.

Wasn't Berrer the guy that Andy injured his ankle against in RG last year? He was quite a difficult opponent I seem to remember.
Berrer was also the very first (routine 6-4 6-2) victory in what became 14 Asian wins and three trophies last year.
I think it is the first round (or rather, the first match) that Andy seems to find difficult in a tournament, not just a particular first round opponent. On the other hand, if he negotiates the first round, he tends then to usually go to at least the SF.
In 17 regular tournaments last year (i.e. not round robin or Davis Cup formats), he got to SF or better 11 times, and went out 4 times in the first match i.e. 15/17 tournaments. The only exceptions were Masters Madrid (out second match R16 - but Bellucci on clay) and Masters Paris (out third match QF to Birdbrain following the three Asian tourney wins on the trot).
Of course, three of those four first match exits last year were in the next three tournaments after the AO and hopefully this year is very different for obvious reasons.
So here's really hoping for a good first match!!! C'mon Andy!
Interesting stats.
I feel that if Andy can push on here past the first round we're in for a very different ride to last year (although I wouldn't want to change the latter part of the year to be anything less than last year, just hopefully even better than 3 GS semis - haven't included OZ as that was the early part of last year). Bring it oooooooooooooooonnnnnnnn!!!!
A bit off topic but just watched a 19 year old beat the Number 1 in Cincinatti in 2006 thus preventing Federer from equalling Ivan Lendl's record of 18 tournaments in a row. Guess who!!

If these reports are to be believed the authorities dealt very badly with this. Depending on how the crowd reacts, it could be quite an uncomfortable situation for the younger Djokovic.
Golubev beat him to add injury to insult.
Its not fair at all. But if he had been put in the main draw in the place of Nole's brother he would have had to play Golubev who beat him in qualies.

Although from what I gather, one of the unfair aspects was the lack of warning that he'd have to play another match and so arguably maybe he wasn't best prepared to face Golubev?

I realize why they always give Federer the best slot. - the packed stadium and the noise that greeted him tonight was quite something. I was surrounded by people of all nationalities literally screaming every time he hit a winner. He is obviously a crowd pleaser. Glad Llodra showed up in the second set !
Or there could be another reason . . .
@PseudoFed:
One of My fans asked why I get the evening slots. It's because the humidity is bad for My hair. My staff can't do a thing with it. #humble
PseudoFed has been great lately, he had gone rather quiet a few weeks ago but now he's very active!
Just checked the livescores and goodness me, Stakhovsky took Nole to a tiebreak in the first, and is a break up in the second!!!

Nole's just broke back but loooks like Stakhovsky taking it to him!
I just can't believe the excessive commie drooling over Fed at the moment. Apparently he is "the most beautiful tennis player in the world" and "he doesn't run about the court, he hovers".
It's absolutely nauseating. I didn't watch the Djokovic match today but there was the same sort of excessive drooling over Nole yesterday. They are both incredibly good tennis players but enough is enough!!!

So you are talking about Barry Milnes and Barry Cowan. Barry Cowan has always been sickeningly fulsome in his adoration and praise of Federer and the two of them together are enough to put you off your food!

Yes, I'm sure it was the two Bs!
I watched Tennis on LSH with Italian commies so don't know what they are saying, as for A Croft, she is even more sickening, now the big term from the commies is "Federeresque" for anyone with a good shot. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Got to see nole vs stahkovsky today. Very good match - nole had to work hard for his win. And there were some great rallies. Then saw Fed. Lopez no match for him I'm afraid. Must say it's nice to get the chance to see nole and fed live and close up without the nauseating commentators. Going home tomorrow though so will have to follow the rest on tv.

I only watched Andy's match today so was saved from the excessive drooling, thankfully.
I watched the Fed-Feli match and the commentator drooling over Fed was utterly, utterly sickening. http://i932.photobucket.com/albums/ad162/mmpx10/Smilies/vomit-smiley-001.gif

I dont usually want Federer to win but in this case I do - I think Andy can beat Federer - not so sure about DelPotro - think he could be dangerous...
I don't want Fed to win, if he loses he loses ranking points and Andy has a very good win ratio over Del Po.
either way a long 3setter would be nice :p

But then again a tired Del Potro might be vulnerable! Trouble is Andy does need to beat the top guys in these sorts of tournaments so he can do it in a grand slam!

Fantastic match, though. I really thought (hoped!) it was heading for a third set, but that was quite a come-back from Fed in the tie-break. Potty really let it slip away from him there....
Still, despite how well Fed did there, I still think Andy can take him, if he plays the way he did against Nole!
Looking forward to the final :yahoo:
I feel sorry for Delpo losing all those set points. But Federer was the better player today overall, even though he didn't play great tennis himself.

So it's Fed!! Yes, Djoko made lots of UEs but Andy played brilliantly! Delpo's not quite there yet.

No, but when Andy plays close to his best, I always expect him to beat Fed. He seems to be able to get into his head and force him to make errors he wouldn't necessarily make against anyone else. Well, that's how it used to seem - they haven't played all that often recently....
Is Nole getting a touch of Federer disease?

When I went back and watched the first set knowing the result I was expecting Andy to have "walked it". Actually there was very little in it until Andy got the break for 4-2 - I would not say Nole played badly at all in the first five games.
Roger - well, over a year since they played. Perhaps slightly different match up than before, especially post-Ivan.
Very interesting in Andy's post-match interview to say he and Ivan worked a LOT on the serve.
Brad Gilbert a long time ago pointed out that the winner of Andy v. Fed always tends to be the one who serves best on the day. I think Roger's concentration is not what it was, but he could still blitz Andy for a set. Just hope Andy can keep the same level of serving as today and also the same level of intensity and focus.
To me this is still a tourney serving as a dummy run for a more important tourney.
What Andy has to do almost certainly to win one of those is to beat 2 of Rafa, Nole and Roger and Andy should approach this as an exercise in beating two of the top four on successive days.
And having said that, wallop him! C'mon Andy!

At least Djoko congratulated Andy and wished him luck for the final (via twitter). Could never see Federer doing that (and yes I know Fed isn't on twitter but I mean in general).
And Nole was very friendly to Andy at the net too.

Because being gracious for Nole, Rafa and Andy does nothing to take away from their feeling of their OWN talent and worth.
Andy's mantra has clearly become Ivan's : work hard and play 110% then when your career is over and you have done the best you can, then you can look back on matches like these with pride. And the results may or may not come your way. There are two in the match and all YOU can do is YOUR best.
Nole, Rafa and Andy have also known each other since they were, what, 12 years old. Nole knows Andy could have a 2012 like his 2011. Because the three of them are comtemporaries (with Rafa having a bit of a head start) they have grown up used to the idea of others at their level. Federer was perhaps a bit of a loner at the top and that is perhaps one more reason why he finds it hard not to have everything to himself.
Djoko wasn't quite himself today, made lots of UEs. Can't see Fed playing the same way.
Hmmmm or did Andy just not let him play like himself?
