Dunno if anyone else here follows this, but thought it worth having a thread!
Dave & I used to go up to Murrayfield once a year to watch a Six Nations match, but now we've started going to more live tennis, we don't seem to have found the time . We've seen Scotland play every other Six Nations team except England - with Dave being an England fan, we decided it might be a bit weird having us cheer opposite teams :big grin:
First match this year is France v Italy kicking off at 14:30, followed by the Calcutta Cup at 17:00 with Scotland facing England at Murrayfield.
Hoping Italy might repeat their historic victory over France in last years tournament, but with France at home this time it seems unlikely!
Getting excited - almost time

My brother's off to Murrayfield to freeze his socks off and cheer Scotland on .... am equally excited - we'll be watching on the telly!

Well, England haven't won at Murrayfield since 2004, which sounds good - except that the matches are only up there every other year, and 2010 was a draw :)
Still hopeful, though - I always am!

Half time score France 15-6 Italy.
Italy looked pretty strong in the first 20 minutes, keeping France pegged back in their own half much of the time, but then two tries from France changed the momentum, giving France the lead at the half-way stage.
Could be an interesting second half, if Italy can regroup, otherwise France could well run away with it!

Indeed Fiona - I'm keeping one eye on the rugby and one on the livescores for Fed Cup! So annoyed there's no livestream for that today :grrr:

Love Rugby..both codes. France win 30-12. Scotland - England next.. Come on England. Red Hot Chilli Pipers will be playing before match. Years ago we used to go to Twickenham regularly. Haven't been for ages. Remember seeing Andy Irvine playing for Scotland one match. Thought he was dishy!

Almost time for the anthems - come on, raise the roof!!
Edit: I love the way they stop the music for the second verse of Flower of Scotland (ok, technically the third verse!) so you just hear the crowd - I don't know any other team that does that - very cool!!
Didn't approve of the 'C'mon Scotland' from the announcer at the beginning of the game. I'm Scottish to the core but think that's just not very sporting - we'd hate it if the English did the same at Twickenham!

Err...excuse me - what happened to our penalty there?! They were playing advantage when the chip went through for the non-try, weren't they??!

Absolutely gutted, but have to say it was fair enough, cos there were just far far too many errors from Scotland. Just can't afford those, but it keeps on happening
Nice for Dave Denton to get man of the match though - he was the main hight point for me - he was a revelation!

Agree entirely. England will need to play better against Ireland, Wales and France though - we flattered them.
Awful performance by Scotland - quite embarrassing really. I feel so sorry for Andy Robinson.

Great win for Ireland today. Now for England v Wales. Come on England!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Intriguing first half - can't call it at the moment.
First ever Triple Crown won for Wales at Twickenham!
Pretty close in the end. It looked like a try to me from Strettle, but there you go.

And to us Dave! Thought the young team gave good performance. Supergramps quite calm at the end!!
Swings and roundabouts. Strettle probably should have got the try but England got away with the Laidlaw one which was just as close against Scotland.
England would have missed the conversion, which would have been funnier, er I mean a shame.

Bad luck Scotland!
yet again we snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!
The Blair injury was the big turning point. Cusiter is nowhere near as inspirational as him. A dead leg so should be back for the next game hopefully.
We scored a try!
You scored two tries! :worship:
Disappointing that it wasn't enough, though.

I agree AllyB - they seemed to lose their shape once Blair left the field. Stuart Hogg and Lee Jones look as though they are good additions to the team though!

Wales v Italy was really enjoyable. Some good running rugby from Wales. They deserved their win 24-3.
Well done Wales tho I feel sorry for the underdogs and no hopers, Italy. Hope Wales defeats France next Saturday to win the grand slam. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
Wales deserve the Slam this year. Can't believe Scotland have made enough chances in every game and won none of them. Robinson has it right tactically but how to make the players believe?

Great result - probably helped a bit that the weather seemed quite Scottish ;)
Fabulous defence though - the Wallabies were hammering the line for about ten minutes straight at one point, but we managed to keep it out. Plus a brilliant try-saving tackle from ummm...was it Al Kellock? Whoever - great stuff!

Awful news for the Ulster Rugby after Nevin Spence died trying to save his brother and father from a slurry tank. He was just 22 with a promising career ahead of him. More from the BBC news channel and website.

Fantastic moment just before the Scotland v New Zealand match at Muurayfield, as Sir Chris Hoy brings on the match ball - wearing navy-and-gold rugby strip, two 2012 gold medals round his neck and a number 6 in gold on his back!
Wonderful!
That really was a dire performance by Scotland against Tonga - surely Robinson will have to go after this.
Home team usually loses at Todders.

Its the players on the pitch that are making all the errors. Didn't fancy Robinson to begin with, but can't see how anyone else will be an improvement at the moment.

Six Nations begin. Ireland beat Wales 30-22. England playing Scotland and leading 19-11 at half-time.
Groan.......not looking forward to Mr P coming home then......not a good start for Wales. Arm band at the ready.
Wales were atrocious in the first half, only dogged Irish defence in the second prevented an amazing turnaround though.
Scotland are being bulldozed.

Hats off to Italy this afternoon - very gutsy performance against Ireland. First time they've beaten Ireland in the Six Nations, and first time (I think) they've won two home fixtures. You really can't predict results in this tournament any more, and I love it :)
Congratulations to Wales - they played fantastically well today and well deserved their win. How strange that Ireland ran all over Wales in the first half of the first match and yet Wales end up with the Championship and Ireland may well get the wooden spoon! Congratulations to Italy too - they've played well throughout and deserved a second win. C'mon Scotland!!!!!!

So disappointed with England today. Supergramps had forecast a win for Wales but thought it would be very close. We sat in stunned silence for parts of the match except when he was castigating the ref and I was cheering on England. (He usually watches quietly) Could not believe the final score and we have been watching Rugby together for 50 years. Wales were tremendous and we weren't....end of story!

so England beat Italy, eventually. Took them a while to figure out the Italian 'tactics'. IMO, it reminded of when you used to play football at school before you were taught about offsides. One team always used to leave a player hanging around the opposition penalty area, which wasn't against the rules but goes against the spirit of the game.
I completely disagree with the "spirit of the game" thing, it was up to England to adjust to the tactics of the Italians, and to be fair once they did, even though it took far longer than it should have, it was one way traffic.
Josephine
27-02-2017, 16:10
I thought it was quite a clever tactic and quite funny seeing these big burly blokes ask the referee what the rules are!
England are the better team and deserved to win but I'm glad Italy weren't on the end of a thrashing. It made Eddie Jones' predictions look a bit foolish, which I don't mind seeing as he has an ego the size of Australia! ;)

The change in rules has us confused also. There have been a few changes over the years.
Josephine
28-02-2017, 13:03
I think the italians just exploited existing rules to the utmost. They were doing nothing wrong - but obviously it was not rugby as we know it. But up to the English team to work out the answer which they did very effectively. Took them a long time of just being confused though.:confused: ;)
I think the laughable part was that even with 15 professional players on the pitch, England had to wait until their half time team talk to find out what the rules were.
Any team would have been taken by surprise but I'd like to think most could have reacted quicker.
I really didn't mind who won tonight but well played Wales!
Definitely the right winner. Ireland very lacklustre again
Oh dear, Scotland! :crying: Well played, England.

Good win by England, the first fixture in the Six Nations where they played as they should
Although we helped by making too many mistakes, i think that is probably the best I've seen England play under Eddie Jones. Up until now a lot of their results have flattered them but today they all showed up.
At least it wasn't as one-sided as the women's match.
Although we helped by making too many mistakes, i think that is probably the best I've seen England play under Eddie Jones. Up until now a lot of their results have flattered them but today they all showed up.
Unfortunately!!
A lot of good play from Scotland, although missed kicks and a lack of decisiveness in try-scoring positions from Italy made things easier.
Thanks for everything Vern! Last week showed we've got a bit to go yet but we're in a much better position than we were when you were brought in.
Well played Scotland!:bravo: Really, really sorry to see Vern Cotter go.
Well, another predictable lions squad from Gatland. Like last time, far too many Welsh players picked. Twelve Welshmen and only two Scots - shocking! What a slap in the face for the Scottish team that defeated both Ireland and Wales and what does England's Joe Launchbury have to do to be picked? He was 'man of the match' twice in the Six Nations and on the short list for player of the tournament and yet he's not in the squad - what a joke! You could be forgiven for thinking that there was a hidden agenda in a Kiwi picking the squad to play in New Zealand.:grrr:
From a Scottish point of view, of course more than 2 players would have been recognition for a vastly improved team. However, if you look at each position individually, which Scots would have realistically been doing more than warming a bench with the midweek squad? Even Seymour might find himself in that position.
Personally I'm quite glad that Gregor Townsend is going to get the chance to take a vitually full strength Scotland squad on summer tour.
Personally I'm quite glad that Gregor Townsend is going to get the chance to take a vitually full strength Scotland squad on summer tour.
That is definitely a plus.
What a great weekend of Rugby 7s! England and Scotland in the final in London with Scotland the victors - the second title in a row for Scotland in London. Well done to South Africa for winning the whole series and to England for being the runners up and particularly to Dan Norton of England for being player of the series. The camaraderie and sportsmanship between all the teams throughout the season has been absolutely terrific and the crowds all over the world have been fantastic.
The no-Scots lions are getting pumped. Karma!
Yay! the Lions beat the All Blacks 24-21 in Wellington What a performance to come from behind.
My little grandsons will grow up to be All Black supporters and they were born and live in New Zealand

Great match - watched the last 20 mins
Well done the Lions on scraping past the 14-men-for-an-hour All Blacks.
A bit of a pyrrhic victory in my view. Given that they were playing fourteen me for three quarters of the match and the All Blacks kicker had left his kicking boots at home, the Lions should have been streets ahead, not scrambling a victory from a penalty in the last few minutes. Still it's good for the fans to have the series still alive going into the last test.
Great match - watched the last 20 mins
Well, from the Lions point of view, the last 20 minutes was good - the rest wasn't. How many penalties did they give away?
Why is Durban bidding for the 2023 world cup, when they couldn't afford to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games? They've claimed their bid differs from the CG bid, but they'll still be the 'elephant in the room'.
Well done Red Roses on reaching the rugby world cup final.

The match at Twickenham was very exciting in second half when Scotland pulled up. The second half more than made up for the disappointment of the first half.
Wales got a penalty, 3 pts
Andy holds, and Scotland have scored two tries!
Scotland beat both England and France this year, in Twickenham and the Stade de France. first time they have done that for many years.
the final game v France was particularly exciting, try in 84 mins, in the red, after about 18 phases, and a good conversion.
French should have ended the game just after the clock went red, but chose to play on to try and score another try despite the fact they couldn't get enough points to catch Wales. At the end of the day, if Scotland had taken their chances against Wales or Ireland they would be Six Nations champions.
Great game. Honestly thought we were going to blow it! Deserved winners though.
