GB drop 1 place in the latest DC rankings to 34.

We have (belatedly, if you see what I mean) overtaken the Slovak Republic but China and Poland have overtaken us.

Belgium are the fastest risers in the top 25, up 6 to 18.

:thanks: Steven for such a lovely compliment ... to be called 2 of the best DC fans around by "The fount of all tennis knowledge" is high praise indeed! And thank you for your company and for helping us wave the "monster" flag.

:thanks: to Lizzim for the loan of said flag too.

Glad to hear others are considering going to an away tie next year. Me and Gill will definitely be up for it as long as it is doable in a weekend. I'm sure we could get block booked seats through Sally's contact at the LTA ....

World Group Play-Offs Draw:

Germany against Australia
Kazakhstan against Uzbekistan
Japan against Israel
Belgium against Sweden
South Africa against Canada
Brasil against Russia (again)
Italy against Chile (also like last year)
Netherlands against Switzerland

Played in September.
Winners go up to the World Group; losers join us in E-A Zone Group I.
----------------------------------------------------------

This is from Steven on BT.net re our possible oppo/venues!

Teams we could meet in R1 or R2 next year ...
blue if it would be a home tie, red if it would be an away tie,
green if home/away would be decided by lot because we haven't played them since 1970:

These teams will be in Euro Africa Zone Group I next year if they lose their WGPO ties in September:
Switzerland
Germany (home if ties against the old West Germany are relevant to home/away here - I think they are - otherwise by lot)
Russia
Belgium
Israel
Italy
Netherlands
South Africa
Sweden

These teams will stay in Euro Africa Zone Group I with us next year under the following conditions:
Finland - if they win in Romania in September or lose in Romania but then win at home to Denmark in October
Denmark - if they win away to the losers of Romania v Finland in October
Portugal - if they win in the Slovak Republic in September
Romania - if they win at home to Finland in September or lose to Finland but then win at home to Denmark in October
Slovak Rep - if they win at home to Portugal in September
Slovenia - like us, already definitely in Group I for 2013

These teams will be promoted from Euro Africa Zone Group II if they win in September:
The winners of Latvia v Ukraine
The winners of Poland v Belarus

Well, you are - I don't think many people would argue with that! :) I did feel a little under-dressed next to all the union jackery - if I'm ever not in a rush before a DC weekend, I'll have to do something about that. Especially since a couple of my Twitter followers from outside the UK were sure I must either be one of the people wearing a union jack dress on Saturday or the Easter bunny on Sunday and very disappointed in me when I assured them I wasn't! :shamed:

Not sure about the 'fount of all ...' thing (though thanks!) ... 'fount of very specific British tennis knowledge especially when able to look things up' might be more accurate. ;)

When asked about away Dc fixtures last byear was told that the LTA arrange block bookings, hotels etc for away supporters. Don't know how much it costs though.

Some of the possible venues I definitely wouldn't make but certainly a few would be appealing!

The LTA definately have tickets. There used to be a company that arranged away tie packages which included tickets, and usually flight and there were discounts for British tennis members. Info was available via the LTA website.

HOWEVER, the last away tie we looked into, there was no package available. It may be because there is less interest in DC now Tim and Greg have retired as their prospective fan clubs used to have quite large numbers going to most of the ties.

Hopefully, even if there is no formal package, we could still get a block of seats together though.

I spoke to my contact about arrangements for fans to travel 'away' to DC ties when I was up in Glasgow last July. This was before we knew how lucky we were to get home ties the next 3 times!!!

He said that they usually had a package put together which included a 'party' night (optional) for the group that went. Sounded as though a good time was had by all ....
;)

He commented that some people thought the 'package' was a tad expensive (they probably go for 3* hotels). However, he felt it represented a decent deal considering everything had been worked out by the LTA and it meant that the away fans were seated together behind the team (as the Belgians were this time around).

Booking individually means doing all the leg work yourself and booking individual tickets too - and it can end up costing just about as much as the LTA deal even if at first sight it might not seem so.

I'm happy to find out what's what - and had planned to do so anyways so we could consider what best to do! I've certainly no objection to organising a group booking (including sourcing our own hotel/travel* but am pretty certain I'd want to go through the LTA for the tickets so we could get those seats behind the team!

Tim and Greg have retired as their prospective fan clubs

But there's the Murray Maniacs now .....
;)

* FWIW I got a similar gig when I worked at a footwear company. We used to go to Dusseldorf every year to the Trade Fair and the MD liked others besides the buyers to go so each time a group of 8 others were nominated to join the head honchos. One year we had 2 cars each with 4 in, a minibus of 8 (the MD's secretary lost ALL their passports and they missed the ferry!), the buyers flew in from Italy and Spain and I went by train 'cos I get car/coach sick.

Belgium lead Sweden 3-0 so they're in the World Group next year and Sweden are in our group.

A home tie next year is now looking even more unlikely! (Finland v Romania still showing as 2-2 on Davis Cup website (http://www.daviscup.com/en/results/tie/details.aspx?tieId=100017705))

I was just coming to re-post here but Jaysee got there first :-)

Poor old Harri Heliovaara (who was 0-7 in singles in DC and 0-5 in DC doubles before today) just lost the 5th rubber to Crivoi from a set up, 2 sets to 1 up and a break up in the 5th, so all of this weekend's relevant ties have now finished. Romania will definitely be in our group next year and the winners of the Finland v Denmark tie on 19-21 October will be the final team in the group.

Stu Fraser confirms that the E-A Zone Group 1 draw will be done with all the other draws on Wednesday unless the result of the FIN v DEN tie could affect seedings, in which case we might have to wait until October for the draw. My guess is it won't affect seeding - we will know for sure when the new DC rankings come out in the next day or two.

Meanwhile, our conquerors this year, Belgium, got a dream draw in the World Group play-offs against Söderling-less Sweden and took full advantage, winning 5-0 with the loss of just 1 set. If only that had been us ...

The new DC rankings are now out, which means:

Seeded teams, possible R2 opponents should we win R1 (or should we & they both lose their first ties)

17 Russia - home/away decided by lot
18 Sweden - away
23 South Africa - away
24 Netherlands - away

GB and their possible R1 opponents

28 Romania - away
31 Slovenia - away
32 Slovak Rep - away
33 Ukraine - away
35 Great Britain
36 Poland - away
38 Finland (if they win at home to Denmark in October) - at home
47 Denmark (if they win away to Finland in October) - home/away decided by lot

It is not clear from the DC rules (which only talks about the remaining byes being 'evenly placed in different sections of the draw') whether the 5th R1 bye automatically goes to Romania as the highest-ranked unseeded team or whether it gets assigned at random.

From twitter:

Stuart Fraser ‏@stu_fraser Great Britain play Russia at home on 5-7 April #DavisCup (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/search/?q=%23DavisCup&src=hash)

Stuart Fraser ‏@stu_fraser GB the only one of seven unseeded nations to receive bye, hence no tie in February #DavisCup (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/search/?q=%23DavisCup&src=hash)

Our luck with getting home ties continues! I could well be up for this one, although it would be nice if it was a bit further south than Glasgow...

A bit surprised we're not away this time, though of course this guaranteed more supporters! Sure a few folk would like a change of venue this time and even though Braehead is very near me I wouldn't mind at al! However whether Andy is likely to play and his preferences could well be a factor. Should be another great tie regardless anyway!
