Love Sherlock. Love BC - and the dude who plays Watson. Never heard of Scandal so will look out for that.

Always had a soft spot for David Tennant. Not really a Dr Who fan tbh. Stopped watching when the aforementioned DT left.

I shall be watching the live announcement on Sunday of the new Doctor, never fully got into Matt Smith so I shall be interested in what way they go with this one, im betting on an older actor in their 40s.

There is a lot of speculation for who will be the new Dr Who

Also watching Scandal on More4 on Thursdays. Very intriguing, US political type drama - sort of West Wing meets Homeland. I missed the first season, but its been easy enough to pick up. Still trying to work out who the good guys are, but its good because just as you think you've worked out who is playing who, there's another twist. I must try to find the first season on dvd, or see if its still available on the C4 website.
I tried to track down the first series but wasn't successful on catch up of any sort or on demand, so haven't bothered with series 2 but thought it looked good.

I don't like the look of the new Dr Who (although I've never seen him in anything else) - it was supposed to be the case that each incarnation should be younger than the last, but this one is as old as the original one! (And nobody else will be as good in the part as Peter Davison was.)

I think Sylvester McCoy was almost certainly older than Peter Davison or Colin Baker.........and he came after them.

The pic of Peter doesn't really look like him with the beard and greying hair. He's been in loads of things including comedy - most recently the Thick of It. Interesting and very different choice I'd say.

If each incarnation got younger they would be ridiculously young soon! They dont stick to the rules in the programme if they did the next doctor would be the last as he can only apparently regenerate twelve times, something im sure they will get round.
Although I thought the revealing of the new Doc was a bit naff (stars in your eyes anyone?!) I am very excited about the choice he is a fantastic actor of stage and screen and I am glad he is older then there wont be any romance nonsense that keeps creeping in. I just pray that Moffet ups his writing on this series as the last couple were poor. Maybe time to get some new writers in I reckon.
I am looking forward to seeing what he does with it and whether he will stay Scottish I hope so!

I really like Peter Capaldi and my favourites were John Pertwee and Tom Baker who actually visited a book store in St.Helens many years ago to sign copies of a Dr Who book. I took my children and he was really lovely with them. I am watching the Third Test from Old Trafford today...Rain stopped play.

Must confess the writing since Russell T Davies left Dr Who has left me and Mr P cold - too complex and fanciful. Just give us some good old scary monsters and an understandable plot.

I've always been a big Dr Who fan and whilst the modern version is obviously a bit different still think the show has still kept true to itself. Mind in the "old days" there were 26 episodes per series but it was a 25 minute show and each story had several parts with a cliffhanger in between. Anyway on to the present and I enjoy the current set up but as always some shows stand out more than others. I think every Dr has made their mark even if some have been more successful than others and whilst I think Matt Smith was great in the role along with David Tennant we needed a bit of a contrast this time and I think Peter Cappaldi being a fine actor and avid fan will do well in the role. My favourite from the 70's/80's was always Tom Baker closely followed by John Pertwee and Peter Davidson.Christopher Eccleston was obviously instrumental in relaunching the show and certainly made an impact but unfortunately didn't stay long enough to be right up there.

Just finished Top of the Lake. Glad to see the good triumphed over evil in the end. Altho' I'm a bit incredulous at the 12-yr-old girl giving birth all by herself and she and the baby were both unscathed. Am now halfway through Broadchurch, which I'm enjoying a lot.

He tried very hard not to come across as chauvinist and the misogynist otherwise there's no way she'd have even gotten a look in on the case. I thought the writer was quite clever with his character actually. We all found him off kilter and smarmy but he wasn't as transparently horrible like most of the other men portrayed.

Well that is of course a personal view. I'm sure we all have varying thoughts on what is/isn't important or enjoyable. I get a certain satisfaction from ironing - I like to see crisp smooth shirts and would be mortified to see Mr P go out in a crumpled one. On the other hand he blissfully opens the bonnet on the car and I am immediately overcome by the need to doze off!

This thread about ironing has had me laughing. I am of the "don't iron unless absolutely essential" brigade. I iron occasionally - cotton shirts, pillowcases(not duvet covers or sheets though), the odd top or pair of trouser. One of my sisters on the other hand, irons everything in sight - clothes, underwear, bedding, towels and even socks. I don't get it. She finds it astonishing that I am so slovenly "that's not how mum taught us" (she's right, our mum was another of life's ironers). I find its the thought of it that I don't like - once the ironing board is up, I do get a sort of pleasure watching crumpled things become lovely and smooth. And I like the smell of something that's just been ironed. However, its not a daily nor even weekly occurrence! Big sis has ironing day on a Friday. Each to their own.......

Caro
03-10-2013, 07:45
My mum also ironed everything and even ironed for other people - she really enjoyed it. I certainly don't iron everything but modern fabrics are much more forgiving. Luckily hubby and I both wear a uniform for work neither of which need ironing. I do have several items of linen clothing though which of course have to be ironed. I usually put it off until it builds up to a massive pile which takes me ages but I do actually enjoy it once I get going. I ironed through the whole of the royal wedding a couple of years back!

Err - how did the TV thread turn into an ironing thread??

It seems like a good line-up on Strictly this season - there seem to be a few celebs with real potential. I didn't much like Judge Rinder or his partner though - they put together a good routine but I thought they were both horribly pompous. I put my money on Ed Balls being the first to leave - although he wasn't nearly as hopeless as I expected him to be!

We have been watching containment. It's one we can agree on unlike the last ship on sky which KevD loves and I did enjoy at first for this series but then it began to annoy me again. Really didn't think it was going to go the way it did in the latest episode though :( between the strain, the walking dead and containment my Tv seems to be full of death and disease at the moment. That's why I look forward to grand designs to lighten things up.

I didn't know this. The focus on the romantic relationship bugged me a little, I could see why it was there but would prefer more explanation on what was going on than a love story. I wish I would have known it wasn't renewed, I hate starting something that goes nowhere. Though after my experience with lost I'm not big a fan of something that goes on forever either. I'm a fussy one haha

National Treasure ? For me. watching any continuing drama, no matter how many episodes, I have to engage, sympathise, or relate to a character. Some-one on who's side I can be on. Yep, the ending of the first series was disappointing and to be honest, the whole of it was less than memorable. But the second series was a work of art and justified the license fee alone. Definitely didn’t disappoint. Writers were on BBC Breakfast this morning and said they'd taken on board viewers' comments about the end of the last series.

RosieBear
01-12-2016, 12:17
Well, for me last night's episode didn't disappoint, but the real shock factor of the second series came a couple of weeks ago when the perpetrator, and the extent of his psychopathy, was revealed. After that it was about bringing the strands together, which was done well over the last couple of weeks, and the sadness (rather than shock) of the final episode was predictable - it was inevitable that 'woodland' scenario was never going to end well.
If anything though, in terms of a grand finale, the first series was better insofar as the true shocks coupled to the father's complete disintegration occurred climatically right at the end. Honestly don't know where folks are coming from who say the first ending was weak. It wasn't neat, which is different, but it was strong imo.

Incredible series and can't wait for its return.

Yes was a good series and finale, though rather a horrible subject.

I agree the ending of the last season wasn't weak. Just people didn't seem to understand it and thought the little boy was maybe still alive when he clearly wasn't. It was just the father had been driven mad by his obsessive quest to try to find his son.

Ooooh yes we've just finished this too. Don't know how we missed it when it was on BBC. Really great show, the whole cast were brilliant. I love Adrian Dunbar as the world weary and incorruptible Hastings. Looking forward to series 4 being on telly but not sure I'll be able to cope with not binge-watching it

What a cracking series LOD is, agree cant wait for S4. Not much on at the moment, Elvis special on Sky Arts at the moment, not that I don't like Elvis but may turn over or go and get my stuff ready for my works night out ready,

In Plain Sight is building up nicely for the last episode.

I have been watching this, not sure I would say enjoying it - I am just old enough to remember his name being talked about and in my very early teens hearing about a friend of a friend who had been on the jury and was excused jury service for the rest of their life.

SO glad Ore and Joanne won Strictly. I was supporting him all the way and voted for him. His dances moved me - loved the show dance.

Didn't vote but I agree. So nice to see someone who's genuinely come from nowhere in the dance world win!

Modus.......no spoilers but I thought the ending, whilst satisfactory enough, left some loose ends I can't quite tie up.

Not had a chance to see it yet. Michael McIntyre was too funny with Jamie Oliver's phone last night.

Semi-final of the special Christmas University Challenge yesterday. Bonus questions were on "matches that took place on the final day of Wimbledon 2016". Questions were:
1 name the Guernsey-born tennis player who won XD with Henri Kontinen
2 name the player who won his second title having already won the wheelchair doubles the previous day
3 name the Canadian beaten by Andy Murray
They didn't know ANY of them :shocked::shocked:

Now watching The Crown on Netflix (you can get one month for free if you don't have it). It's really good. About the Queen (early part of reign seen so far - not got to the Sir Andy knighthooding bit yet! :) ) and really well done. Definitely recommend. Not sycophantic - good acting, excellent sets.

Sherlock is fast becoming another show ruined by the Moffat Effect. Too much about the characters and no detective stuff.

Still have it on my sky box. Intended to watch over Christmas but ended up watching loads of films so didn't get round to it. It will definitely get watched at some point.

I am still watching Poldark .... that's how behind I am! If it's something hubby isn't interested in I have to wait till he's on afternoon shift to binge watch .... or when I'm ill like now.

We hadn't seen the first series so after seeing the first episode of the second we went back and binged watched it! Very good. I have a bunch of stuff on my box at the mo, Si wi, no offence, Sherlock. But I have to wait for KevD to be back from Boston to watch them. So it's tennis and things I think he won't like until then.

Anyone seen taboo? Is it any good? Forget this question for to the end and saw it mentioned lol
