A Knight's Tale : Tongue-firmly-in-cheek humour. Loved the mixture of medieval tale of peasant boy who becomes a knight, romance and jousting contests with background of pop music."The Boys are back in Town" had me laughing out loud as did Mark Addy and the brilliant Paul Bettany as Chaucer. Thought it was very witty and thoroughly enjoyable. Only thing is when you watch Heath Ledger you tend to get a bit sad. 9/10

I have seen a few movies recently on my PVR.
Biutiful (with English subtitles) - really gritty and powerful but quite heartbreaking. Don't usually like Bardem but he was amazing in this. Barcelona has never looked so grim. 8/10
Summer in Genova (starring Colin Firth) - not very interesting at all, so slow and boring in parts. 2/10
Hereafter - beautiful and the CGI tsunami at the beginning was incredibly realistic and scary. 9/10
Blue Valentine - depressing but OK. 5/10
I saw Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy the other day. It was well acted but so confusing - I'm still not sure what was going on!

Saw it today(12:00pm), but was very shocked to see there was only 6 people, including myself in the theater!
I thought the sex scene was soft they could have gone a lot harder lol

Two films I've seen recently and would recommend are "Hereafter" and "Limitless". The opening scenes of Hereafter concern a Tsunami and a French journalist. Matt Damon plays a disillusioned American man who used to work as a medium but now works in a factory. Also we meet a young Asian boy who lives with his twin brother in London. The three strands of the story are told separately until they all come together for a moving and dramatic ending. Limitless starring Bradley Cooper and Robert de Niro concerns a writer (Cooper) who has writer's block and whose life is slowly disintegrating. He meets, by chance, his ex-brother-in-law who gives him a tablet which makes him a genius. It's a fascinating story and does make you think of what chemists and pharmaceutical companies could do!! I'd score them both 9.

watched " murder unveiled " the other night . Its about an honour killing , true story and very disturbing .
Real Steel Ok, so, you can't blame them for jumping on the bandwagon(Transformers) but, i was taken aback with the story! mainly because of the amazing son(Max Kenton) played by (Star in making) Dakota Goyo and his Dad, the multi- talented Hugh Jackman! If a piece of tin(steel) can mend a broken dad, son relationship then every family should have one. Dont be put off by the bells and whistles as their is a real warm story. 8/10

This afternoon tennis had finished so watched a film called "Paul" about two guys who are space "nerds". They are in US for a convention and then plan to travel to areas where supposed sightings of aliens have taken place. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost wrote and star in the film. It is very funny though does have a lot of bad language which is funny also. I won't spoil the story but if you liked "Close Encounters" and "E.T" I'm sure you will enjoy this piece of escapism. Made me laugh out loud! 8/10

Chronicle pretty good film this, 3 guys, hole in ground, Alien, glowing Crystal, superhuman powers, we would ALL want! 7.5/10
Haven't been to the cinema recently but saw Black Swan on DVD a couple of nights ago. Strange film. In places it was hard to tell what was really happening and what was just in her head (like A Beautiful Mind, I had the same problem with that).
Today The Woman In Black My fear for this film was, i wouldn't be able to watch Daniel Radcliffe (Arthur Kipps) and not think Harry Potter! well, that was washed away from my mind in the first 15mins, as a mature, haunting looking Radcliffe takes over!
A ghost, a creepy house in the middle of nowhere, demonic-looking toys and lots of jump scares(2 or 3 for me) and if your lucky/unlucky some extra sound effects from the school kids.:hide::yikes: (watch this in the schooling hours if possible) Hell has no fury like a woman scorned, sadly what Arthur Kipps finds out!!

" The Grey " with Liam Neeson . Good .... but disturbing if your afraid of wolves
War Horse.........seriously, if you've ever read Black Beauty, don't bother. I really can't think what all the hype is about. For me the film was overly long at 2hours 26 mins and sometimes I had my finger down my throat it was sooooo cliched and predictable. There was humour in it but lots of the story didn't really hang together properly and so for me 5/10. Maybe for those fanatical about horses it might be worth a watch.

I found the story of this annoying, lots of information missing, like when they were on the plane, why did it fall from the sky??
When the men were killed off one by one, i didn't really care!! Liam Neeson did his best to carry the film along, to end, where the best fight is, to the death, but!................

Yes, i saw fur. Ijs, didn't you want to see them fight! They built it up so well, for a few seconds Neeson looked like he had lost the will to live, ready to lay down and just die, then suddenly he makes these (x-men) Wolverine claws out of vodka shots bottles! wraps them around his hand ready for the battle for his life!! It does that with Mad Men also. Netflix doesn't have Titanic either. Can't get a lot of movies on Netflix, I know you like it but I prefer apple tv where you get many more movies and recent ones as well.

I'm hoping to see The Hobbit next week. It's had mixed reactions from the critics which means I'll probably like it. I'm a big fan of the Tolkien books and re-read the Hobbit followed by the LOTR once every 2/3 years so it'll be interesting to see what Peter Jackson has done this time around.
I'd like to see Quartet too - most things with Maggie Smith in are worth a watch IMHO.
I saw the Hobbit this evening (or, looking at the clock, yesterday evening). It seemed quite different from the book (although admittedly it's a long time since I read it so my memory could be wrong). At the start it seemed very slow but it got better and better as it went on, until it suddenly ended and we felt quite cheated as we wanted it to continue!
They've strung it out far too much in my opinion.

I guess the difference is that the LOTR was written as 3 distinct books making it easier for the film maker to opt for 3 films. The Hobbit is the same length as only 1 of the LOTR books but has quite a lot of detail too about the histories. I can't really comment until I've seen it but I'm guessing that turning it into 1 film would have been possible, 2 at best and I can see that 3 might be stretching it out too much unless Jackson has dug into and included other background Tolkien work.

The action takes place over 24 hours during the onset of the banking crisis. Absolutely riveting and describes a world that is alien to the majority of us but a world on which many have an opinion. Stars Kevin Spacey, Stanley Tucci, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Demi Moore and Zachary Quinto. Members make suggestion for the following season which is for 9 months of the year Sept-May. The last one was My week with Marilyn, very sad. Next weeks is Dear John. We have had, The Iron Lady, Marigold Hotel, Young Victoria. Finish this year with War Horse, will need to take lots of tissues!!!
That sounds really good, Pat!

I joined a film club too - it's run by the local university. Saw Anna Karenina, Impossible and a disturbing documentary, The World Around Her, on two very different Indian women. Denmark's A Royal Affair is next.
I haven't seen War Horse: the movie but I did see it in the theatre. Loved Marigold Hotel, Young Victoria and My Week with Marilyn.

Watched Second Hand Lions last night and loved it. It was a delightful, funny film starring Michael Caine, Robert Duvall and Haley Joel Osment. Don't know how I've missed this film as it was made in 2003. For those who haven't seen it it is the story of a lonely, quiet young boy whose feckless mother dumps him on her two old uncles for the summer. I was amused and moved equally. Love the three main actors!! 8/10
Thanks for that SG - I remember seeing trailers for this at the time and thinking I'd like to see it but forgot all about it. Will make a point of seeking it out.
Suicide Squad wasn't great, but nowhere near as bad as most reviews have suggested!
Lol hawkeye mine is the same suicide squad... Though my review may be more Harsh than yours. 4/10 not enough character development plot development or script. Too much has been cut to shorten the movie so it lets down the DC universe and makes it unlikely to attract more fans. Harley Quinn? Too far from the comic character and her relationship with the joker appears as a love story in the film not the twisted ownership one of the comics where he is a sociopath and she is his puppet. Too light, to jokey, too far from the comic. Works as a stand alone I guess, if you had never seen the comics, other films or didn't know the characters. I really didn't enjoy it, it was the worst film I've seen since the new Jurassic park which was a massive let down.
I saw that film, didn't like it.y I haven't read the comic as I am an adult ..
Allot of noise and a little script, mainly an exhibition of visual tech
Haha Kev D that was a dig at me... Very funny :) :) sorry I made you go to see it.

David Brent: Life on the Road. Hiliar :laugh::laugh:
I don't think a film has ever appealed to me less. I am however very excited about going to see Rogue One on Saturday. Shame I have to take my kids!
I'm afraid David Brent and indeed Ricky Gervais give me the creeps, as does David Walliams. Can't explain why, they just do.
Not at the cinema ..... but the last film I saw was The Reverence with Leo DiCaprio. It won oscars I believe. Brilliant film, really enjoyed it.
A United Kingdom - absolutely brilliant.
Went to see "Lion" last week - based on a true story of a little boy who gets lost in India. Fantastic film. I cried my eyes out though -I get worse with age!

I watched that over Christmas, it was good. I also saw the Martian with Matt Damon on the plane back from Costa Rica. I liked it so much I am looking forward to watching it on sky, so it's full size and unedited. I really enjoyed it so I am happy to see it again.
I watched Jason bourne (new from sky box office). It was ok, Kev liked it more than me, too many chasing scenes and very little talk. It doesn't win the award for the worst film I've seen recently though, that goes to Tarzan which I watched on the plane. I really didn't like it so I ended up staring into the clouds.
None of these were on the cinema but I did get to the cinema to see rogue one! Great film, can't wait for the DVD release. I would have gone to see it again if the cinema wasn't so expensive!
Lego Batman this weekend! Yay! For my kids obviously...

KevD suggested one of those but most of the films we see are 3D or imax so wouldn't get the money from it.
Also saw Dr strange which I loved the DVD is on my wish list. Bernie is fantastic as always. I never tire of watching him. Fantastic beasts was good too, redmayne was better than the rest of the cast put together. He was so good, the role could have been written for him. I usually don't mind Colin Farrell, he's not the worst or the best, but I really didn't like him in this. Though he has the right look, he just seemed a little wooden inside it. Perhaps not the right role for him. I think the film itself needed to be longer, a bit more story. I would probably watch it again if it was on but not buy it.

I also saw LaLaLand. I was also not overly impressed. Starts adequately (no more) after 10 minutes I would say it descended to boring. It did get better again. Second half fine although no great classic. Ending was good. Don't understand all the hype either.
Before that I saw Jackie and that was good. Excellent acting and more of a grown-up film.
Watched money monster on sky the other day. Really enjoyed it, it was gripping. Probably not a film you'd watch twice but entertaining anyway.

It was the same for me, l didn't fancy La La Land, friend went to see it, she wasn't impressed and normally she loves everything!! We went to see Lion, really good
I've seen La La Land - and I loved it. Each to their own. It is a "marmite" film though I think - you will either love it or hate it, no in between. I can understand why people haven't enjoyed it - with the opening sequence my heart sank and I did think it could be a long couple of hours, but actually once the film got going I really enjoyed it. Loved the music, and thought it was beautifully filmed and directed. It felt very old fashioned, but done in a modern way. That won't make sense if you haven't seen it! But overall, big thumbs up from me.

Bit of a surprise that La La Land did not win Best Film at the Oscars,Moonlight taking the honours. Know some critics thought Moonlight deserving of title and a more diverse movie. Haven't seen any of the films yet myself (not really much of a cinema goer nowadays) and whilst like musicals and would be interested La La Land no doubt is over rated. However chaos as wrong winner initially named,Warren Beatty had the card for Best Actress somehow which Emma Stone took for the musical,Casey Affleck Best Actor. (Manchester By sea)Didn't actually watch it but woke early and followed results. La La Land won 6 oscars but didn't sweep the board as some were predicting,Moonlight took 3 and also 2 each for Manchester By The Sea and Hackshaw Ridge. Other noteable results Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Viola Davis (Fences) for supporting roles.

I've just watched 'Denial'. It's about the libel case that Holocaust denier David Irving brought against the writer Deborah Lipstadt and Penguin Books. It sounds really dry but it's not, it's enthralling; very historically and legally interesting. It stars some of my favourite actors; Rachel Weiss, Timothy Spall, Tom Wilkinson and Andrew Scott (Moriarty in Sherlock) are all superb. One of the best films I've seen in a long time.
I've just watched 'Denial'.Never happened.
I saw guardians of the galaxy 2 before I went away. It was entertaining, sillier and younger than the first one. This was good for me though as I realised i could take my nephew to see it. I took him at the weekend. He loved it. And loved his first trip to the cinema too. He's nearly 9 but he wasn't the youngest there.
I watched a couple of films on planes during my travels. Manchester by the sea - slow and depressing. It is well acted but my word I was so unhappy when it was over. But it's not as grim as gone baby gone. That was just horrible. Neither of them are bad films but neither were my cup of tea either.
My nephew stayed over, he's 15 so I was dreading what he was going to choose to at the weekend. He picked Independence Day 2 in the end. He thought it was the best thing he'd ever seen. It was ok if you like that sort of thing lol. Soon I will watch a film I want to watch :)
Went to see My Cousin Rachel last night. We enjoyed it very much and can recommend. I can also recommend Their Finest, which is very British and has the lovely Bill Nighy in it.
Baby Driver, cars and guns, sound track, not many laughs but I enjoyed it - slightly too long and repetitive car crashes
My nephew philip wanted to see Spider-Man but it turned out it was only on once a day at our local. He now has kickboxing everyday like his big sister, despite being only 8. Between them he and sam agreed on war for the planet of the apes. They both loved it. I thought it was awful. It seemed to go on forever, there was nothing new or exciting about any of it. I was aware of the passing on time while it was on. I'm sure others enjoyed it as sam and philip did but it really wasn't for me. We played along for the boys, joined in with their excitement cheering the characters on. I loved watching the faces of the boys as they were pulled into the film but if you can avoid watching the film, then do.
Very, VERY excited about Blade Runner 2049 which is finally out this week!

I have just seen Borg McEnroe. I liked it and would recommend - if you can find a cinema showing it at a time convenient for you that is. If you can sort these logistics (not easy in my case), I would definitely go along.
The actor playing Borg is more Borg-like than the great man himself! McEnroe less so as I'm sure you've seen from the trailers. I remember this final very clearly as, as a Borg fan, I screamed my way through it. The stress of it was only superseded by the 2013 final when I was a motionless silent wreck in front of the tv and needed counselling afterwards but that's another story.
Watching Borg's girlfriend puffing away at her ciggies in the Wimbledon box and the TV man lighting up his cigar in the commentary box is a blast from the past.
I was treated to 'Goodbye Christoper Robin' this evening. I enjoyed it very much, though at times it was (unexpectedly) rather sad. Take tissues if you plan on going!
Happy to say that Blade Runner 2049 was everything I hoped it would be, and true to form I failed to see the glaringly obvious plot twist! Absolutely glorious and worth all the plaudits it has received.
went to see The Limehouse Golem, and enjoyed it very much, gallons of blood, great settings, and plot twists.

Just back from watching this. I agree, totally gripping - even though you already know what happens. Outstanding acting from all cast.
I'm going to see the film tomorrow. I know Gary Oldman has been nominated for an Oscar.
He's also been nominated for a BAFTA.
I, seriously, hope Gary Oldman wins the BAFTA and Oscar for best actor, as I thought he deserved it. I believed it to be a very good movie and Gary was so believable as Sir Winston Churchill. I know it was filmed in the actual cabinet war rooms in London.

I also enjoyed The Darkest Hour - thought it was a very cleverly made film and Gary Oldman was sensational. The tube bit was ridiculous but otherwise at least it showed a sort of 'warts and all' portrait. Plus the reality that troops were sacrificed to enable others to be evactuated at Dunkirk. Not forgotten in Scotland
http://www.heraldscotland.com/opinion/13411989.After_Dunkirk__Churchill_abandoned_the_Hi ghlanders_at_St__Valery/
But Oldman and the film really conveyed the power of words and oratory which was powerfully moving.

I've watched several films recently of varying quality. Wind River was very good. It is about a murder that takes place on an Indian (native American) reservation. It's a bit of a slow burner, but stick with it because it builds into a good, but quite harrowing drama.
The Snowman, however, was really disappointing. Based on a booked by the brilliant Jo Nesbo and with Michael Fassbender leading a stellar cast, it had all the ingredients for a tremendous thriller, but it was dire. Extremely disjointed - wasn't long before I didn't know what was going on, then I just didn't care.
I'd rate The Mountain Between Us starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslet somewhere between the other two films. It was OK. They, along with the pilot's dog, get stuck up a mountain together following a plane crash and have to find their way home. Pretty watchable, though Idris and the dog definitely more appealing than Kate.
I watched so many new films over Christmas, some good some awful. But I can't even remember them now. I did watch 3 this weekend though. One good, one great and one terrible. Jack reacher was particularly rubbish, more of a Kev film than a me film. It doesn't have much of a plot it's more a "watch to cruise be a bad guy hero" The mission impossible films can be entertaining but this was not.
Logan on the other hand, which I got for Christmas was good. Hard to imagine someone else taking up the role of wolverine. I just can't see it. It was entertaining in the xmen way.
But had nothing on the black panther. We went to see it in imax 3D with Yellowlivi on Saturday. I had really been looking forward to it and it was great. Not to give too much away I loved the fact the "villain" was not just bad, there was sense in what he wanted to achieve even if he would take it to far or go about it in the wrong way. The acting was brilliant. I can't believe I forgot that michone from the walking dead was going to be in it. So I spent sometime in the film thinking "arghh what is it that she is in" I haven't seen the walking dead in a while. Then we came home and later that night there was an advert for the walking dead! I was annoye not to have got it on my own lol. Kev and I have this sad game we play when watching tv or films at home. When someone comes on from something we recognise the winner is the one who shouts it out first. I tried to take points for this one as when the advert came on I said that's what she was in. But it didn't count lol.
We added wind river to our watch list the over day so I guess we will give it a go this weekend. I've had my fill for full action for now lol

Also saw Darkest Hour. No doubting the quality of the performances, and I totally agree about Dillane too. But for me, the film somehow managed to lack suspense, which given it was one of the most critical moments of 20th Century history is a bit alarming. Maybe it's because we knew what was going to happen?
Having watched The Crown recently too, it's interesting comparing Oldman's Churchill to John Lithgow's. Oldman gets all the great opportunities with the rip roaring speeches, but the way Lithgow interacted with the Queen was also sublime.

I saw The Shape of Water, last Sunday. I was warned, beforehand, about the nudity and sex scenes. There were a few titters of laughter, from the others who also watched it. I did enjoy it. I'll be seeing the Three Billboards film this Sunday as I know it's loosely based on a true story.

The only Oscar nominated movie I've seen is Shape of Water. I went in thinking I was going to hate it and came out absolutely loving it. It's such a weird movie - a bit horror, comedy, drama, magical, sci-fi, romance, a mixture of all sorts of genres. And it was filmed in Toronto - esp. the theatre scenes from the Elgin Theatre on Yonge Street where we go see the panto every Christmas.
I watched The Shape of Water. Whilst I enjoyed it for the most part, it was a bit ridiculous in places which spoiled it for me. Not my type of film. Hope it doesn't win best picture at the Oscars. 3 Billboards IMO much better. Looking forward to I Tonya in a few days time esp after having watched the winter Olympics.

If anyone lives in or near Manchester, the Manchester film festival will be showing Damascus Cover which is Sir John Hurt's last ever film. It's not due to be released, nationwide, until later this year.
The Emoli movie won worst movie at the Golden Raspberry awards, last night. Tom Cruise won worst actor for The Mummy and Tyler Perry won worst actress for Boo 2.

Perhaps bit of an upset as The Shape of Water took the Oscar for Best film, however wasn't totally surprised having read one article stating it was a more likely winner as Three Billboards considered more controversial in the States. Not that I've seen any of them yet but going by reviews/clips (even if not necessarily best guide) wasn't my preferred choice though The Shape of Water I'm sure does have merit and seems different. You were right with all the others though Fiona and for many Frances McDormand worthy Best Actress, Gary Oldman also getting further acclaim for Darkest Hour, I Tonya also seems interesting and well acted.
James Ivory who won best adapted screenplay for Call Me By Your Name oldest ever winner at 89, whilst Jordan Peele who took best original screenplay for Get Out first African American winner in this category.

The City Without Jews, an Austrian film which was filmed in 1924, will be going on release in London and Bristol later this year. Why only London and Bristol?
The films I have seen recently are Churchill, (not The Darkest Hour), which had me spitting blood, it was so awful in its portrayal of Churchill. A Dog’s Purpose, which was very American and so grated a bit, but well worth seeing - the Corgi in it had a personality just like my Millie, ie Food, food, food and an attitude of “you threw the ball, you fetch it”. Finally Peter Rabbit - the animations are superb, but made me flinch a bit. Peter is very like some children I have taught.....!!! Then Paddington 2, which I enjoyed. I thought it was better than the original, which I thought was very good.
I went with my sister, on Wednesday, to see Isle of Dogs. We laughed, in places, and we both thought it was quite good.
Finally got round to watching justice league. After finally seeing Batman superman, which is one of the worst films I seen in along time, I really wasn’t expecting much. It wasn’t as bad as I thought. Better than BM SM by quite some way and a fairly entertaining way to spend 90 minutes or so. Don’t think I’d watch it again though. We enjoyed that too :) then went to see deadpool a few weeks ago which was also good. We also saw a film starring Ryan renolds on sky a week ago. It was called the voices and was a dark comedy about a guy who hears voices when e goes off his meds and what that leads too. Judging from how young renolds looked I guess it wasn’t a recent film but it was amusing. In a dark way. Certainly much better than war of the planet of the apes that my niece and nephew had me watching when they stayed over last night. That’s really not my bag. I watched Three Billboards last night. Really good and highly recommend, but also very sad.
a film called Pad Man, which i recommend. it's a true story of an Indian man who is horrified that his wife cannot afford sanitary pads and uses a rag during her periods - as presumably do all the other women in the village. so he sets out to invent a substitute, and its the story of his progress. it's funny, very colourful, boppy Boolywoodish music and a view into another world. well worth seeing.
I watched The Happy Prince, today. My sister and brother-in-law watched it, last night. She thought they were watching a French film, so she went to ask the box office about it. But, the person had never seen it. I know Wilde had to go to France after his release from prison and wasn't allowed back, which is why it had to be in French. I thought Rupert Everett brought Oscar Wilde to life and was very good.
I went to the cinema, yesterday, before the men's doubles final to watch Barry Lyndon which was made in 1975. I thought if Leonard Rossiter hadn't been in it, it might have been better. Ryan O'Neal's Irish accent kept slipping into an American one and there were no English subtitles, whenever they spoke in either French or German.
My sister and I went to see Ocean's 8, yesterday evening. It was quite funny, in places, but I really didn't understand why they had to include Serena Williams as one of the guests at the gala. I didn't see Maria Sharapova. James Corden played his comical self.

Today I watched The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It's a nice film - grim in parts, but a feel good factor overall. Definitely worth a watch on an autumn evening. That said, I haven't read the book - apparently it hasn't done it justice.
Last Wednesday, my sister told me that she wanted to go and see The Spy Who Dumped Me. I agreed to go with her, as she'd got that 2 for 1 cinema offer. But, when I went to her house, she suddenly realised the offer for her had expired. But, we went anyway. The film, which seemed to be based on James Bond, looked like it was a good idea and it was funny in parts but it felt like it hadn't been well thought out. At the start, there was a warning about the violence and nudity. It did feel childish, in parts.

I saw "The Girl on the Train' making use of my Prime subscription. I had read the book and thought that was passable. I think the film was fairly good too. Not great art or literature but Iif you have a spare rainy afternoon, I'd say it's worth watching.
Saw Blackkklansman last night. Really gripping film.

As with many films, I thought the book was way better but I do like Emily Blunt. Too bad they put the location in NY instead of the original London.
Yesterday Judy posted a tweet about The Book Club which she said was terrific. Well, I watched it on my flight back from New Zealand and I thought it was cringe-worthy and stuffed full of clichés about sex and older women. Yuck. I'm surprised Judy would like it but as she pointed out we all have different tastes so I have to respect that.

What I have discovered is that on Prime there sections marked "Discovery" "MGM" etc ( I can't remember all the names) and under these there are a lot more films. I can't remember under which ones are the best selections either but they are there, you just have to search through them.

I saw Lion on Prime using my month's membership. Excellent. It was not as harrowing as Slumdog - I had been worried about that. No violence. The acting from the little boy is amazing. Couldn't fault it.

Loved this movie!
I had hoped to go and see The Little Stranger with my sister, but she was too busy. In the end, the room was so empty that I think there were less than ten people (including me) who watched it. I'd been told the film was a ghost story and it did scare me in parts. I thought Ruth Wilson was good as Caroline but Domhall Gleeson, son of Brendan, was very good. We were meant to believe the house was haunted by a girl called Susan, but it was never explained about how she died. I won't give the ending away, as it was unexpected as to who the ghost really was.

Could not agree more. Fantastic film. I saw it at the cinema and watched again on prime.
I was going to go to the cinema, yesterday, with my sister to see the Peter Jackson film called They Shall Not Grow Old but she felt too tired. When I arrived, I was told there were only two seats left, one towards the front and the other towards the back. I got the latter. I thought the film to be very good and graphic. My great grandfather, on my mum's side, was in the Royal Field Artillery and I looked for his face but I couldn't see it. Afterwards, Mark Kermode interviewed Peter Jackson. I'd read it was supposed to have lasted about 40 minutes, but I think it was less.

Loved A Star is Born. I thought both BC and LG were awesome in their roles! So well done. AND the music was pretty good too!

I also watched 'They Shall Not Grow Old' last night. Wasn't sure I wanted to see another WW1 film - we have toured many WW1 & WW2 battlefields, museums and cemeteries in France & Belgium - but I thought it was excellent. It focusses on the infantry and the individual views of the soldiers towards enlistment, training, battles and life in the trenches. I found some of their attitudes quite enlightening but it has to be remembered that the views are those of survivors. Others might not be quite so enthusiastic about the experience! As expected there are some pretty harrowing scenes but also some funny moments. Technically excellent to marry together the old films in varying formats and colourise them. This film is being shown on BBC on 11 Nov and it is also going to have more showings following the interest in this original 1 night only livestream. It was first commissioned as a 30 minute film incorporating footage from the Imperial War Museum with Peter Jackson given free rein on interpretation. I think it actually lasted about 90 mins. In addition the team has brought about 100 hours of old film up to more modern standards. There is an interview about the film with PJ by Mark Kermode on YouTube. Definitely worth watching this film.

Started watching this afternoon on Netflix, having read the book. Woke up as the credits rolled. Wil try again some time. :)
I saw First Man, last Saturday. I thought it was okay and the camera made the few people, who watched it with me, feel like we were inside the capsules. But, it felt rushed.

I thought that the flight sequences were well made, particularly how cramped and vulnerable the astronauts were at take-off, and how the construction of the rockets felt like they could fall apart at any time. Having just read the biography upon which the film was based, I felt the portrayal of Neil Armstrong in the film was not as I read him to be in the book. The film portrayed him as quite vulnerable and emotional, and I see where they got that from, but the book (based on interviews) shows him as very driven and not letting his emotions interfere with his role in Space.
I watched Peterloo, today. It was a typical Mike Leigh film, but I thought it was very good. The violence was graphic, but I didn't get to see all of the massacre which happened towards the end. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets BAFTA nominations.

I just saw The Favourite. I wish I hadn't.
0/10.
I went to see The Favourite as well, on Sunday. I, originally, went to see it last Saturday. But, I got told all the tickets had been sold when it was nearly my turn. The woman managed to squeeze me and two other women in, on Sunday, as three people didn't turn up. Afterwards, my mum told me that Queen Anne was a lesbian which was strange as she did have 17 children and they all died, but one called William lived to be 11 years old. I found the character of the Duchess of Marlborough a bit too powerful. Lady Masham did become Anne's friend, after she (Anne) and the Duchess of Marlborough fell out with each other, but having her plot the Duchess's downfall?! It was a bit too weird.
Have you ever heard of spoilers?

Have you ever heard of spoilers?
haha - however in fairness to Stell, I don't think she has written any spoilers. Trust me there is a lot more to be seen in it - most of which there is no way of knowing or not if it really happened. I'm guessing not and that they have decided to seriously "sensationalise" the Court and the times.
I usually just go by what Mark Kermode, the film critic, says. He claimed The Favourite was a good film.
On Wednesday morning, I went to see Stan and Ollie. I didn't know much about them, except they each had been married more than once and they toured this country after the film career finished. I had seen, my local news region, they'd performed at the Palace Theatre in Plymouth before going off to Ireland. I found the film funny in parts and both Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly to be very good in it.
On Wednesday evening, I went with my sister to see Colette. I knew nothing about her and we both thought that Keira Knightley's performance was quite good.
I saw Mary, Queen of Scots, last Saturday. There were hardly anyone there, because of the football match. The performances were good, but it felt a bit rushed.

I saw The Favourite last week and I really did not like it. The acting was fine but the awful two-note film score and the fish-eye camera angle drove me bananas.
As usual, my sister didn't come with me to watch All Is True on Wednesday. I thought it was good and the acting done by Freya Durkan (Judith Shakespeare) was very good. Judi Dench's accent sounded like she was from Cornwall.
For anyone wanting to get up, or stay up, to watch the Oscars this weekend then sign up to Now TV's Cinema Pass before it happens and then cancel it afterwards. As you'll be able to watch it for free.
I went to one of the Exeter cinemas, yesterday, as they'd decided to do 'Classic Sunday' and showed Dr Strangelove. I'd never seen it and, as usual, my sister decided to do something else. Before it started, we were shown a short film about the film and Stanley Kubrick's daughter, Katherine, and his brother-in-law, Jan Harlan, talked about Stanley and how he came to make the film. Though there weren't many people watching it, one man admitted that he'd last seen it in 1964, they and I found it funny in places.
