View Full Version : DUBAI 2012, R2: Andy into Quarters after 6'3, 6'4 win over Chiudinelli
Sallydaisy
28-02-2012, 12:52
Andy took 3 sets to get his R1 match done and dusted - and so did his R2 opponent Chiudinelli.
The Swiss 30yr old beat Davydenko 6'4, 5'7, 6'4 with only one break of serve needed in the final set.
This offers a potentially easier match for Andy who was 5-4 against the Russian in their H2H.
He's never played Chiudinelli before (H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=C582) 0-0) so there'll be a bit of checking out to do in the first game or so.
The Swiss player is ranked #185, CH52 in 2010, and today's match is his first win of the year.
He's not won a single title on the ATP Tour and mostly plays the Challenger circuit these days.
Interesting snippet from his ATP 'bio' - "Player he admired growing up was Ivan Lendl..."
Hopefully Andy will have settled himself into Dubai and his 'team' will have sorted out any little niggly bits that seemed to be bothering him a bit in his R1 match.

Of Course we can't take anything for granted but Chiudinelli could well be an easier opponent, though of course Andy will need to be on form.

Need a positive Andy to come to the match.
I really don't think we need to read to much into Andy's match. He won and I'm sure that this will kick start his form and he will improve match on match. If he was not feeling 100% healthwise it's only something minor and he will quickly recover. I'm really hopeful that Andy will do well in this tournament as it's better to grow in your game than to to reach your peak at the start.
Good Luck and good health Andy.

Andy on first again on centre court, in the heat of the sun. Guess who's got the cushy 7pm slot again.:grrr:
Yes it's a pity he couldn't have the 4:00 slot instead of djokovic. Not surprised Federer gets the evening slot. There wasn't a seat to be had for his match tonight - except in the more expensive areas. Let's hope Andy feels good tomorrow.
By the way my all day grandstand ticket cost me all of 9 pounds!!!! They get more expensive later in the week but meanwhile I get to see Andy again tomorrow. Can't believe my luck.
looks like il miss the match

Make it a quick win, Andy. I have to go out at 11.30!

Well there's a surprise! I'm convinced Smugfed won't play unless he can choose the time - it's too much of a coincidence for it always to be down to the schedulers even though he's a crowd puller.

Hope Andy has recovered tomorrow and can hopefully get the W without draining himself if he is still not 100% OK. C'mon Andy!
Ditto to what David just said - I hope Andy is recovered and raring to go tomorrow. I'll miss all this, so hope I come back to see the W.
Come on Andy :cheer::cheer:

I think the problem with have ex British tennis players as commies is that they are all insanely jealous of what Andy has achieved. Tim Henman is the notable exception having had a successful career.

Chiudinelli is playing some good points. You have to feel sorry for him, he's spent his whole career in the shadow of Fed & Stan. Rather like Almagro in the shadow of Rafa & Ferru.

I had to go out just before the end, but I was watching on tennis.tv so I was able to rewind when I got back and watch what I had missed :)
Andy must have felt better today, he was playing comfortably within himself and never even faced a break point. I have to admit I'm a bit worried by the possible prospect of Berdbrain, though.

Good afternoon all. Watched Andy's match in another room away from computer so as not to disturb husband doing his sudoku/crossword! Really enjoyed seeing Andy playing well and showing the improvement he displayed today. Well done Andy!:cheer::cheer: Re Bouncy, can't help thinking he looks as though he's sucking a lemon when complimenting and praising our man.;) Loved Petch and Fleming commentating.
Congtats Andy Well done. :wino:
Not been able to see any of this week so far, probably not going to be able to watch any of it either now as i've just found myself a temporary work placement. Nice to get those results though, irrelevant of who they were against.
I think the victory over Berrer was monumental given past performances at this stage of the season. I reckon the pressure would have felt bizarrely intense for him, given the stage and level of the tournament, but a defeat would have meant a field day for the media. Questions would also have been asked about Llendl and his schedule, it all would have been uneccesarily unpleasant.
So onwards and upwards, a very commendable start.
How come Andy is back on playing @ 10AM UK time tomorrow, 2PM Dubai, while Del P and Tsonga get to play evenings and seed 1& 2 @ 7 PM local time. Mr Federer @ 5PM and Nole @ 7PM tomorrow. I wished Andy would get an afternoon our time better for me. Selfish ?
where have you found the order of play? I looked but couldn't find it
edit - sorry, just found it!
Just got in from my second (and sadly last) day at Dubai tennis. It was good to see Andy looking much better today - moving much better, not so lethargic or distressed. Onwards and upwards. Berdych will present a greater challenge though.
I think the schedulers are really taking it out on Andy for saying what he did about the Tipsaravic match a couple of years ago. Serve them right if he chooses not to go next year when he's number 1!
Congrats, SamP, on your placement :) I also will be unable to watch tomorrow's match due to work
