Andy's draw could be worse...

Jan
19-03-2012, 17:23
Dan Evans playing Phau at the moment. 4-4 in the first. Dan was a break down.

harriet
19-03-2012, 17:25
could be exciting, i'd like andy to play berdych, then isner and fedX in the final.
really show his true colours beating that lot

Katie
19-03-2012, 17:28
Istomin beat Ferrer in IW so looks like he's in form right now. Hopefully Andy will be on form from his first match here. He'll need to be sharp if he gets through to play Raonic in R3.

Jan
19-03-2012, 17:48
Dan Evans lost the first set on a tb

harriet
19-03-2012, 18:11
and then he lost the second, 0-6. he had a 40-30 point, and then an A on phau's serve to win the first set 6-4. shame he blew those chances, never at the races after that

I see Bleacher Report have written Andy off already for Miami. He has the toughest draw and suprise, suprise Federer has the easiest.

Well that's quite encouraging, they are usually wrong!

Alis
20-03-2012, 14:41
I never read anything in the Bleacher Report unless another site member flags it up as worth reading - much of it is utter rubbish!

I had thought that all four quarters of the draw were fairly even until I looked again at Federer's - they might as well have given him a wild card to the semis!

DaveArneRiise
20-03-2012, 16:28
Wardy out of the qualies final round, losing 6-3 6-3 to Eduard-Roger-Vasselin...

Watson took the first set against Cristea 6-3, but lost the 2nd 6-3 and just gone a break down in the decider :( Serve seems to have suffered a meltdown.

Sallydaisy

Sloana Stephens.... possibly! Good friend of Heather's btw - met them both at Estoril.
The big US hope is surely McHale who was born the same year as Heather, and who Heather was level pegging with until about a year ago, but who has now shot up to something like 31 in the WTA rankings.
Laura seemed to fade in the second set. Pity as she had beatent he no. 83 in the world in the previous round. She needs to string together victories at tourneys like these, then she will just glide into the top 100.....

A really gutsy win for Heather, well done! Pity it didn't work out for both James and Laura! Ward was up against the top seed, but what looked like a winnable match for Laura just slipped away. See that Garcia Lopez qualified here too! McHale and Stephens certainly have the potential!

Sallydaisy

Clement is giving Raonic quite a tussle out there today.
At one point Milos was 5-3 up but the wily Frenchman broke back and it's now into a tie-break.
Clement has a mini-break.

Haas was leading 5-3 in the 1st set but Steppy pegged it back and took the tie-breaker 7'6 and the 2nd set 6'1 to go through to R3.

Sallydaisy
23-03-2012, 20:41
Clement *2-1 with a mini-break. At some point must have been broken back because Milos now has a set point at 6-5* with Clement to serve.

6-6* Clement holds, change of ends.
7-6* and Milos breaks at the right moment.
*7-7 Clement breaks back
*8-7
9-7* Raonic takes the first set.

Quite fascinating this; Clement is now 34yrs old and giving the 21yr Canadian a tough match.

Just watched Ferrer/Tomic - neither played that well, lots of UEs. Tomic asked the umpire to remove his father from the stadium as he kept making comments. The umpire couldn't do that but gave him a coaching warning - his father didn't leave though. He really does seem to be such an overbearing tennis parent, really negative even when Tomic does good shots.

I do, although my parents work from home via the internet. From past experience I've found its best to avoid using up too much bandwidth which could prevent them from doing what they need to do, although saying that we've just had an upgrade so internet is much faster- so I could probably get away with it now. Although I guess I'm just used to/happy with live scores, well apart from the glory days of Queens/Wimby!! Having said that I did follow quite a few matches of the AO on radio 5live in my room up at university (including nole vs andy) which was highly enjoyable! For now I'm happy with live scores and the endless newspaper reports I find online while I'm back at home for Easter :swingin:

I'm sure you could watch livestreams now. A few years ago when we only had 2 mbps in this area I was always having to tell my kids to get off the internet if I wanted to watch a livestream, 'cos otherwise it kept buffering. (That didn't go down too well.) But they've been gradually improving it and now we've got up to 12 mbps so we can normally all be on the internet at the same time without problems. It does vary, though. Must be great to be in a big city and have the superfast internet.

I guess. Haha, Well I'm not actually from a city or live in portmouth (in a town nearby), although I'm at Southampton Uni, the internet in my halls is absolutely amazing, the fastest I've even managed to serve the net. ATP website usually took 5-10 seconds to load before (well less at home now as we've had upgrades), but in halls its almost instant, although the rotating news thingys still take an extra few seconds to load.

And Berdych going out as hit my bracket badly too  I had him getting to the Quarters!

I had Berdych to reach the semis which is bad predicting! Always get very nervous when he plays Andy so am pleased that he'll have a different opponent if he does reach the QF.

Can't wait for Rafa v Stepanek; of course I always want to see Rafa, but it's always interesting to see a match between players who have contrasting styles. Yeah I guess. Although I am quite a fan of the live scoring business and article reading/highlights on various tennis and news websites. I know it isn't by far the same as the real thing. Besides by merely following the news than the action it adds to the excitement for when the BBC broadcast Queens/Wimby and the latter matches of the other slams, and of course Olympics this year. Though I used to live stream in the old days, I found it too much trouble to find a decent stream (i.e. that doesn't buffer, shows the correct match it says its showing, and has english commentary)- then by the time I did find an adequate streaming I was told to stop using all the bandwidth (although that shouldn't be a problem now). I'm just used to reading/following the scores and highlights than the 'real thing' as it were, nonetheless I still find it exciting.
Yeah I agree radio isn't as good as watching, I did find it very amusing though- the commentary was outstandingly witty!!

Fantastic that you have sky James! I used to have it too (though all except the sports), but my parents stopped watching TV and so stopped paying for it

A quick note about "taking bandwidth" from others in the house/using the stream.
I once had it explained that this is not necessarily the case as each user is like a separate lane on a motorway (or even better, in a country like Portugal where you pay for motorways, a toll booth). Another user does not automatically slow everything down, (and conversely, just one user does not automatically always get "all" the bandwidth "all" the time. Your streaming software also has something called a buffer which basically means you do not have to be accessing the Internet all the time.
Put simply, experiment. If you do take up too much bandwidth the others in the house will let you know! But there is far more "dead" time from one or two users than you might think!
PS Mind you, having a good speed helps. I have 120 Mbps and could spend more (quite a lot more) and have 360 Mbps at home.**
**Occasional forceful commentshowing Portugal is not as behind the rest of Europe as may sometimes be thought. :)

Linda
26-03-2012, 19:38

Ah, tennistv are finally showing some live tennis. They joined Benny v Ferru in the 2nd game (what were they waiting for?)

Will have to check what the internet speeds are like in MC! Although mobile phones are fairly useless there - texts often take about 3 hours to arrive. Not what you want when you are relying on others to text you when they see which court Rafa is practising on. The problem seems to be that one's phone is constantly switching from one provider to another. Wonder if there is a way to make it fix on one.

Little Dominika Cibulkova is doing a number on Azashrieky!!! 6-1 in the first set and a break up in the second.

Make that two breaks...

Dom is just whacking these crazy winners right, left and centre. Quite dazzling.

And then after leading 4-0 her game goes all to pot and now it's 6-5 Aza. Go figure!

Tiebreak. Gulp!

Certainly given some help but Azarenka dug deep and took a tight breaker 9-7, must be the favourite to take it now! Pity Dom tightened up though. Del potro up a set and 5-4 over Cilic, little trouble for Nole earlier.

Great news to wake up to. Hope Andy can capitalise on the opening up of the draw (well a chink) but I'm nervous of his lack of match practice before meeting someone like Simon. Can't record this as the builders moved the Sky dish yesterday and now we have no signal - no point fixing it till they finish the work at the end of the week *sigh*.

Same old Federer. He said in the BBC report on teletext that he came out flat and must have been tired. Absolutely no acknowledgement that his opponent might have played better on the day.

27-03-2012, 10:08
I suppose the only alternative would have been to put Andy on Stadium in the slot where Delpo/Ferrer are today. If they had done that British viewers wouldn't have been able to see him play live so maybe there was a TV scheduling consideration there - or maybe the organisers are just being 'Anti-Andy'!! Glad that we get to see him though!

I'm looking forward to seeing what an in-form Ferrer can do against Djoko who really hasn't been on the top of his form so far.

It could be a tough match for Djokovic - he only narrowly leads their head-to-head (7-5) and their match at the Aussie Open was very competitive for the first two sets. Ferrer's never beaten him on outdoor hard though.

Blimey!!! Three hours! That was a match and a half. After an easy first set 6-2 Rafa was serving for the match at 5-4 in the second and Tsonga came roaring back to win that set 7-5. Rafa managed to squeak out the W 6-4 in the third BUT his left knee needed a lot of massaging throughout and he winced at the end so I don't know how healthy he'll be for the semi. Something to think about! Feel badly for Tsonga. He fought so hard for half that match.

JAMES4578
29-03-2012, 06:16
Looks like that became a gripping contestr but Rafa just a bit stronger in the end, highlights on tv here tonight. Looks like there could be concerns for both Rafa and Andy, though of course maybe there'll be enough recovery time. Let's hope it's a good contest again, hope Andy can come through.
