View Full Version : Milos Raonic

Looking at the threads on here I don't think we have one for Milos Raonic yet.
Seeing as he's an exciting player, already with two titles this year and of course Andy's opponent on Sunday, thought it would be good to start one!

Might aswell start with a significant question, will Raonic ever get into the top ten, if yes when will he?

Maza1987

Yes, he will probably get top 10, possibly by the end of next year imo.

He certainly is a prospect and would pretty much agree with that timeframe. I still think he needs to improve his returning game though.

I think he'll definitely get into the top 10 soon, but I agree with James that his returning game needs work. His serve wins him a lot of tie-breaks but against good returners he's going to struggle.

RoastLamb
24-03-2012, 13:53
This year his returning game has improved greatly. Maybe not as much as John Isner but then he's 26 now. So there's lots of time still for Milos to get better and better. And he will.

Elenive

Yes, he will probably get top 10, possibly by the end of next year imo.

Would be great if he could, but I was thinking maybe around this time next year when he'll have his breakthrough ranking, I guess it depends on how well he can perform in the grandslams to get those all important points.

for me he is a early bloomer, cant see him sitting in top ten consistently, more like 11-20

david1610
25-03-2012, 13:11
It clearly depends on just how good the rest of his game can become but as we can see with Isner, if a super server develops good returning and rallying skills as well, the become very difficult to beat.

The good news for Milos is after the French he has no points to defend till the fall because of his hip injury sustained at Wimbly last year. And I think his game suits grass very, very well a la his hero, Pete Sampras.

Elenive
25-03-2012, 15:59
Milos' hero is Pete Sampras?
Didn't know that, where do you get all your interesting facts from RL??!

RoastLamb
25-03-2012, 16:31
From his many interviews. He's the first decent Canadian prospect for decades so the press are really interested in him over here. He's watched Pete's videos over and over again. Like watching paint dry, if you ask me. Not a big Sampras fan myself.

From Jon Wertheim's mailbag today: (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/news/20120523/maria-sharapova-mailbag/index.html)

Hey Jon, discerning Canadians want to know: Can Milos Raonic do well at Wimbledon? Sure, he's got possibly the best serve in tennis which should bode well for grass, but he's also a big guy with awkward movement. He may not be able to get down low enough to those skimming ground strokes. Your thoughts?
-- Michael, Halifax

• Thanks. I decided to throw this one to the well-regarded Canadian tennis scribe Tom Tebbutt, who has seen a lot of more Raonic than anyone in the media. Here's his assessment:

"Of course Milos Raonic can do well at Wimbledon - and by well you have to mean at least reaching the quarterfinals. A year ago, he won two rounds on grass at Halle before losing a close one to Philipp Petzschner. At Wimbledon he outplayed Marc Gicquel and I remember afterward how impressed the 34-year-old Frenchman was by Raonic's big game.

Against Gilles Muller in the second round, he was already up a break at 3-2 in the first set when he had to retire with that fateful hip injury. I think he'll be a lot better this year - he's a quick study about everything on the tour. Of course getting down to low balls isn't as easy for him as it would be for Albert Montanes (5-foot-9), but then the Spaniard could never have nearly as devastating a serve as someone like the 6-foot-5 Raonic.

The Canadian moves fine for a big guy and there's no doubt he'll be dangerous on grass in Halle, at Wimbledon and in Newport, where he plans to play the week after Wimbledon. Ask anyone who follows the game closely about whether Raonic could do well or even win Wimbledon this year and, outside the Big Four, they might only pick Tsonga and Berdych before Raonic's name is mentioned. He's definitely among the top 10 favorites."

He will be a threat at Wimbledon that's for sure. That serve is a potent weapon.

Linda
23-05-2012, 21:45
He might be a threat to most of the top 20 players, but I think his chances of winning the tournament are zero.

So last night at Toronto's Air Canada Centre Milos played an exho with Roddick and before that match Serena played with Aga. Aga won 6-4 6-4 and Roddick beat Milos in three, winning 10-7 in the super tiebreak. Roddick was extremely entertaining constantly chatting with the crowds between points and doing impersonations of other players inc. Rafa, Djoko, Sharapova and Serena. Howlingly funny. Good fun and all the money goes to charity: Milos has set up his own foundation for disadvantaged children.

Defo not the right Andy. Plus I do not want to pay to watch Serena, even if she did lose.

Forgot to say, Daniel Nestor was commentating. He had some interesting nuggets about the inside world of tennis but he's very soft-spoken and I could barely hear him half the time.

Raonic is back in St Petersburg to defend his title.
He said
“Part of me takes pride in winning this tournament again and there is also an aim to move higher in the ATP Race as there is a fight for the world’s No. 3 position,” . “So there is even more motivation for myself.”

It has been a great year for him. I would really like to see him defend his title here.

“I have had my best ever season so far this year and it is a great reward to be one of the first few players to qualify for London," said Raonic. "I love playing indoors and I look forward to finishing 2016 hopefully on a high note.”

I'm not surprised to hear about the split with Moya - the joint coaching with Johnny Mac couldn't have been easy. I felt there would always be a conflict of interests with two 'super' coaches in his box. I can't see Mac giving up commentating to coach Milos full time.

Also he is currently suffering from an abductor injury. He said that he had it in his last tournie but it was mostly healed when he started playing here. He doesn't think the injury is the same one but he has suffered injuries to that area a lot recently. When asked if he would still play DC he said they had to see how it goes and a lot is in the air for him at the moment. He suffered with illness during the tournie as well so I guess that's why he found it so draining. Get better milos!

Seems like a few weeks, he is down as scheduled to play Delray Beach (20th) and Acapulco (27th)but seems unlikely if it is weeks off the court

“I am sad and disappointed that I am unable to compete alongside the Canadian Davis Cup team versus Great Britain,” said Raonic. “I sustained an injury during my previous match in Australia that will keep me off the court for the coming weeks. I wish all the best to my teammates and my full support is behind them in this exciting tie held in Ottawa.”

He seems like a very 'deep' guy. It was a good read.

In an interview after the grass swing last year he said he overthought everything. That his head was always so busy and that's why he had taken MC on, to help him structure his thoughts and improve his mental side of the game. It's odd because he wouldn't seem like that to look at him, he always seems calm. He said in another one that when he closes his eyes on the bench he is trying to calm himself and clear his mind so he can focus on the match.

RosieBear
11-02-2017, 14:28
I think that Raonic came on leaps and bounds under Mac. Not just the volleying, but definitely the mental side. Raonic first struck me as a nice guy with a good temperament for tennis when he played Andy at the USO 2012. Andy really schooled him but throughout the match Raonic remained calm but really positive in his body language, and at the end when Andy apologised for 'getting lucky' on a few points, Raonic said it wasn't luck, that he played an amazing match and would win the whole tournament if he could keep it up (so true :)). I thought he had a great attitude. But then 2013ish onwards Raonic started doing his meditation and weird, robotic thing of adamantly showing zero emotion - although quiet he didn't look calm at all, when things got tough he looked like a pressure cooker ready to explode. Mac convincing Raonic to leave the automaton technique behind and revert to his natural calm but normal demeanour is the best thing and has definitely been a big part of Raonic's recent progress imo. What's more Raonic acting less robotic coupled to his really excellent volleying skills has absolutely transformed his watchabilty for me - I no longer find him boring at all, quite the opposite
