Yay! No Federer. Wish I could say the same about Djoko.
No Fish either  Isner could jump him in the rankings if he's not careful!
No Fish or Fed maybe but I will be there! :cheer: :cheer: :yahoo:

You're going again? Lucky you!!! Do so hope Rafa can beat Djoko on clay this time around coz he's going for his 8th consecutive trophy there. It is 8, isn't it?

I think I'd pick this one too.

Yes, Fiona, Rafa will be going for his 8th consecutive title there! The Prince has never handed the trophy to anyone else! And as for Andy's clay court game, I was astonished to see when I saw his first match there last year that suddenly he was playing like a proper clay courter! I expect he'll do well again! I expect Isner to do well, too - for an American he's not too shabby on clay!

It's great when you enjoy watching clay to also enjoy watching Andy play on clay, and the setting of MC is amazing!

Delpo is missing from the listing too ! Makes it interesting in the 5-16 rankings.
Let's just hope that Rafa recovers in time. If his knee is really bad 2 weeks is no time at all but perhaps he pulled out of Miami with the clay season in mind.
Enjoy Monte Carlo Linda - would just love to be there.

I doubt Linda's going to want to be there if Rafa's not. So I hope he recovers in time.
He said on facebook last night that his knee was feeling much better and he was training so sounds promising!
How long are you there for Linda? Have a great time!
Thanks Caro. I have tickets for Wed-Sun. Just been checking on VB, there are about 40 of us this year! We'll all have a great time.
One of the highlights of last year, probably up there with the three tourney wins in a row was Andy's clay court form. After a miserable run of defeats he blossomed on the devil dirt and took it all the way to Roland Garros where he did pretty well against King Rafa. Hopefully we'll see more of the same.
Yes, I was very impressed with Andy on the clay last year!

Looking forward to this! Really rooting for Colin and Ross getting a spot!
At the risk of sounding really stupid, can someone explain how they can be ranked 10 in the race and still not automatically qualify???

Isner out of MonteCarlo
From SteveGTennis on twitter:
John Isner says in @mensclaycourt (https://twitter.com/#%21/mensclaycourt) interview that he will NOT be traveling back to Monte Carlo next week, Albert Ramos IN.
Isner: "I need to get in better shape...to do some damage at these next two grand slams and masters series events...head back to Florida"

Erm, if you mean the Qualies draw it was only done 25mins ago (2pm MC, 3pm UK) so expecting the ATP to have it loaded up so quickly is being a bit optimistic.

Ah, OK. The time given in the first post of the main thread is always local time. And I got my time difference the wrong way round - as you spotted - so I'm sorry for any confusion!!! The Qualies draw was scheduled for 2pm France (1pm UK) so by 3pm here it was 4pm there and well over-due.

Murray's Monte Carlo route - R1: Bye. R2: Troicki/Lisnard.

SF: Djokovic/Ferrer.
F: Nadal.

Further snippets from various sources - the draw probably won't be in full format for a while yet ...
Djokovic/Murray in the same half; Nadal/Tsonga in the other (woohoo!).
Seeds in Novak/Murray half: Dolgo; Monaco; Ferrer (potential QF for Djokovic); Melzer: Nishikor; Berdych.
Seeds in Nadal's half: Almagro (Nadal's potential QF opponent); Mayer; Lopez (all in Nadal's quarter...); Verdasco, Simon, Tipsarevic (in Tsonga's quarter). Raonic in Tsonga's quarter.
First match for Nadal - Stepanek/Niemenn.
For Novak - Seppi/Qualifier
For Murray - Troicki/Lisnard
Nadal's likely path: Stepanek/Nieminen; Mayer; Almagro/Wawrinka/F.Lopez; Tsonga/Verdasco/Kohlschreiber/Raonic/Tipsarevic; Djokovic/Murray.
Very good draw for Nadal - he should really make the final at least.
Tipsarevic/Raonic second round (Raonic has Montanes in the first round);
Ljubicic/Dodig first round;
Wawrinka/F.Lopez first round - think Lopez might lose here;
Berdych/Cilic 2nd round;
Tomic/Istomin first round (with winner of Dolgo/Chela in second round!) - might get a Dolgo/Tomic second round match on clay!

At a quick glance Nadal's looks the easiest draw to me - what does everyone else think?
Good to see that Andy's not in Rafa's half. We could get an Andy-Rafa final this year! I think they both have an OK draw except that Andy has Nole in the semis.
With Isner having withdrawn, there's not a single player from USA in the draw!

I thought that too: but then, what could be a difficult draw for Rafa at Monte Carlo, apart from getting the Djoker in his half?

Nevertheless I suppose it does in part depend on the state of his knee(s).

Not sure about that - would we have been feeling easy if Tipsy and Tsonga were in Andy's quarter ??
As it happens Vic Troiki could prove a challenge as an opener, but that's always a good thing for Andy. Berdych hasn't been in such great form lately so - yes - Andy's draw could have been worse.
Let's just hope the Clay Court practice has done its job

Still still think Andy has the tougher draw, but suppose it could've been worse. Hopefully a few good contests in this tournament! Troicki could be challengingi in the first match but Andy will be in form from the word go.

Put it like this, seven of the world's top eight players were in the draw! Indeed hard to get an easy route. Want Andy to get a good start on clay before he has to play the dangerous clay court specialists. so it could have been a lot worse!
I also think that Rafa's knees will determine what kind of a tournament he will have far more than his actual draw. Having said that, I suspect he will have been very happy to see Andy in Nole's half rather than his own!

Andy may still get a doubles match in before his singles - the second round singles doesn't start until Wednesday: http://www.monte-carlorolexmasters.com/Schedule/Program-of-the-week.aspx
Edit: in fact he should, they start the doubles second round on Wednesday as well.
Sky have just confirmed Andy second up on Tuesday so he will get singles in before his doubles.
The link for oop is now up. Andy/Jamie playing doubles later on in the day after Andy's singles.

Andujar v Delbonis is on Court 2 which is a 'covered' court. It's nothing like Wimbledon with a full roof - more like a tented arrangement - but it allows play to continue if there is light rain. Did you see it when you were at the event in Monte Carlo a few years ago???
It looks as though they are planning to resume play on the 2 show courts because livescore has the matches back up but they'll probably have a full warm-up first.

Something slightly weird on the Schedule for tomorrow.
The last match on Court 11 is shown as follows:-
Colin Fleming/Ross Hutchins v Alternates tba
BUT we've been hearing that Colin has a stress fracture so presumably wouldn't be able to play.
They were due to be playing Monaco/Nishikori who presumably have withdrawn because Monaco is injured.
So goodness knows what'll happen to that match now ...
Surely the match will just be scratched, won't it?

It certainly looks doubtfull sadly! Pity Pics also had an injury woe, hope he will be ok in due course.
Surely the match will just be scratched, won't it?
Presumably it becomes Alt v Alt - whoever's hanging around in the locker room and wants to play doubles!
david1610
18-04-2012, 00:24
Andy and Jamie's victory together was apparently the first time on clay.
The reward... those American brothers ...... whom they are also playing (together) for the first time....
or a walkover for colin and ross?
Madeline

Match between Nishikori and Berdych just finished. Andy's next opponent is Berdych - Ken gave him a good run for his money - 2-6 6-2 6-4
Apparently Novak left a practice court in tears this morning because his Grandfather has passed away, very sad news.

Nishikori had that match in the 9th game when he had AD against Berdych's serve.

Court 2 is still playing -and the Murrays are now 1 game all - on LS
What is it with Annabel Croft - is she jealous of Andy or does she just not like him? She even seems to be able to make a negative out of a positive - perhaps it's because Andy has a winning H2H against her idol Federer!
............... and she obviously hasn't done her homework - banging on about Andy going out to practice because he hasn't been on court long enough when he is presently playing a doubles match!

Various tweets regarding the weather, the player and conditions in Monte Carlo.
Neil Haman:
Now, to see how world No.1 handles what is going to be a very emotional afternoon. I'm sure he will do himself and his grandfather proud.
Always hard in these circumstances and at the moment The Djoker's heart doesn't seem to be in this. 6-2. Dolgo 1st set
Djokovic leads 5-1 in the 2nd. rain falling steadily but not enough - yet - to suspend play
Huge rumble of thunder over the top of MCCC. I suspect we're in for a bit of a break soon. 1-1 in the third
Julien Benneteau has right arm in a sling as he gives press conference. Nole and Alex about to re-start. Storm moving out to sea
Dolgopolov holds to love with some aplomb, two mighty service winners and a flicked forehand to a Djoko drop shot. 4-3
Mighty claps of thunder all around us now, pitch black sky to the left, sunshiney blue to the right. Think the blue may win out
Another incredible forehand return from Djoko on break point forces Dolgo long with his backhand. Nole to serve for the match. High emotion
GSM @DjokerNole (https://twitter.com/#%21/DjokerNole) in three sets. High, high emotion. Prayers and tears. Good man
No on court interview with Nole, his brother carried his bag off court. Wonder if he will come to speak to us or not?
There will be no @DjokerNole (https://twitter.com/#%21/DjokerNole) press conference today for which we have total sympathy. There will be plenty more opportunities in the future
Still a lot going on in the skies above Monte Carlo, much discord and fretting. Rafa a set up and 1-1 v Kukushkin
Rafa keeps casting anxious glances up at the sky as the thunder continues to rumble overhead.
Alex Willis
Novak Djokovic cannot fail to have garnered a lot of respect for a very brave 3-set win over Dolgopolov today, the day his grandfather died

Classic dumb scheduling.
They could put Mayer/Melzer v Granollers/Lopez on earlier because none of them are involved in the singles event any more. Instead they've scheduled Wawrinka to play almost immediately after he plays a singles on Court Central.
How about scheduling him to play LAST guys so you don't have to hold up the last match.

PS Just watched Rafa's match and at 2-1 30-0 up in the second set the camera lands on our very own Linda for a few seconds. :cheer:

Benny HAS got a broken arm - it's a fracture near his elbow joint.
He's also got a sprained wrist and ligament damage to his ankle.

Interesting that Djoko is getting frustrated and breaking racquets - I wonder if Ms Croft will comment adversely on his 'on-court demeanour'!

Well, well - Berdy takes the first set off Djoko 6'4.
Wonder if the knowledge he's playing whilst his grandfather's funeral is taking place is having an effect?
Is it really - then why is he there? Sorry, I just don't understand that.

Nole took the 2nd 6-3, though had to save break points at one stage and has now broken at the start of the decider. There were reports that Nole might withdraw when he heard of his grandfather's death but he made the decision to play on. It could be he feels his grandfather would have preferred that.
I guess it's a personal decision, so we have to respect whatever he feels is right. I'm sure there would be others who would choose differently.
Of course you're right Jan.

Nole certainly certainly stepped it up and took the 3rd set 6-2, Berdy though fell away somewhat.
djo has just won in 3 sets, hard fight, windy and dust kicking up from the clay, very different from y'day.
welldone djo
Peter Fleming doesn't make any bones about putting Ms Croft in her place, does he? She really is a first class plonker!

Rafa takes it 6-3, 6-4. There certainly were some tough points but Simon couldn't take any of the bps opportunities. Nadal reallly had the upper hand once he saved the bps in the 3 all game 1st set when Giles really should have broken.
Really pleased with how well Gilles played today. Hope he keeps this level up and gets into the top 10 again :) Tomorrow's match will be very interesting!

Yes it is interesting how so many pounce on how andy is on court but fail to mention others!
I thought Neil Harman was unfair in his comments today in the Times and omitted to mention some of the possible reasons ie the court and fear of falling as reasons for andy's behaviour. Yet Novak also was tentative at times on the court and complaining about the state of it.
As did Rafa seemingly! Most of the Scottish papers were unusually supportive of Andy today I thought - quoting him as saying that Berdych deserved to win and that it would take time for Andy to adjust to clay.

21-04-2012, 22:01
The main thing is how Andy can improve on clay to beat players with the power of Berdych, as well as the out and out clay court specialists, never mind the players ranked above him. What people like Ms Croft think is a very distant second. I know they can influence others but such people are only going to really change their views with what Andy does on court, anyway. The focus is on the tennis.

I have to say I'd like to see Rafa win this one - partly to secure the record and partly to make things more competitive between him and Djoko before the French.

Well done to Rafa on another record win!
Well done to Rafa! Novak was clearly a long way below his best today, making loads of UFEs, but Rafa would probably have won even if Novak had been at his best. Really impressive level of play from him today, the clay season's looking good for him once again. :)
Good for Rafa , but dont think Nole's mind was on this match today , hes had an emotional week . Cant believe he continued playing really.

The Bryans apparently in control in the doubles final leading Nestor/Miryni 6-2, 4-2, was expecting a tighter affair here.

Looks like the Bryans realy were on song, well done! Expected more from Danny/Max though.
Could have been a religious thing as to the timing of the funeral.
Great to see Rafa win something though, really hoping, Andy aside of course, that he wins Roland Garros.
I'd rather see Rafa win RG than Djoko but wouldn't it just be great if Andy pulled it off and silenced all his critics!
The Murray bros put up a better show against the Bryans than the finalists did - for a team that plays together as little as they do that really wasn't bad.
nole for me over rafa, tho of course miles behind Andy. so tempted to put a cheeky little EW on him to win it

Would be fabulous to see Andy win RG but I really can't see him beating either Djoko or Rafa - or even Federer - but you never know. I think Djoko really deserves to win RG.

23-04-2012, 01:31
I would just ideally like Andy by the end of the clay court season to show he can be (at least) number 4 on clay.
RL - that's very magnaminous of you to say Djoko deserves to win the French! I agree with you, but I hope he doesn't because Rafa will never believe he can beat him again if that happens!!
How wonderful it would be if Andy could pull off the impossible ......
I agree Caro. Nothing against Djoko but if Rafa is beaten by him at RG I feel it could even prompt an early retirement - he is such a mercurial character - and I think we'd all hate for that to happen. Never write off Andy - winning RG against all the odds is just the sort of thing that would particularly appeal to him (and me)!!!!
I would just ideally like Andy by the end of the clay court season to show he can be (at least) number 4 on clay.
That would be brilliant and maybe even realistic! Winning would be even more brilliant, but at the moment seems unlikely (would love to be wrong!)

Well I hope Djoko doesn't beat Rafa in the RG final either but if Rafa isn't in the final (same applies to Andy) and Djoko is then I'd like him to win.
Agreed - worst case scenario for me would be a Fed win!

The win in Monte Carlo was huge for Rafa, it was so important for him to beat Nole there and will no doubt give him much confidence for the rest of the clay court season.
