Wardy has been playing in a FUTURES event in Taipei.

Not sure why because it's only 10/11 days since he pulled out of playing DC for GBR.
He perhaps thought a Futures would be a 'gentler' tourney to get 'back' into the tour?

Anyway - he ended up being ranked top seed #1.

R1: James Ward GBR [1/WC] WR153 beat Che-Ching Yeh TPE [Q] UNR 6-0 6-3
R2: James Ward (1/WC) WR153 defeated Ho Chih-Jen (TPE) WR 1177 by 4 & 1
QF: James Ward (1/WC) WR153 lost to (PR) Daniel King-Turner (NZL) UNR (*)

Really not good for James; there was very little competition here and he had a good chance to win the tourney and post up some much needed points. Perhaps he went back to competition too soon?

(*) According to the APT site, Daniel King-Turner currently has no ranking, but a career high of 217 (19.07.10)! Must be easing himself back into the swing of things after a long-term injury...

Certainly a disappointing result, though maybe James wasn't totally fit.

Devilder was a truly tricky opponent at this level - the guy is a clay court specialist with several clay Challenger titles to his name.

Lost the 3rd set. Unfortunately James seems to struggle on taking his chances. Failed to convert on 7 break point chances in the first and as a result he lost that. Happens too often this with James.

Wardy took the 4th set so it's 2-2 and into a 5th.

James will have to play top notch from the start to win this.

Shame about Fish. Thought Wardy played really well but gave it away abit at the end with three UEs in the last two games. Still, if he can keep it up, he'll not be needing a WC next year.

Wardy is unlikely to be in action for another couple of weeks per his twitter from 9th July.

James Ward ‏@JamesWardtennis (https://twitter.com/JamesWardtennis) Had a fall in practice on friday before I played and hurt my wrist- decided to give it a go but wasn't good! No fracture but won't be able To play Atlanta next week! Time to hit the gym and get ready for the rest of the trip....tough one but it happens!! Off to tampa now...

And update on 11th July

still not hitting backhands yet but getting some great gym work done and shuttles with my trainer. should be good for lexington in 2 weeks

Ouch - that's not good!

When Dave broke his wrist it was about 5-6 weeks before it was out of plaster, but several more weeks before he started to get good strength and movement back into it, and months before it was close to normal. I guess Wardy will have access to to decent physiotherapy, though, so hopefully it won't take him that long!

Even more bad news for James Ward: he tweeted this 2 days ago.

Injury update....torn tendon in the same wrist I fractured after wimby so I won't play again this year!! Gutted!! #comebackstronger

Thankfully he's no points to defend for the rest of this year so won't slip too far down the rankings.

Wardy is back - and has kicked off the new season by winning 2 matches in one day!!!

He has one more round to play and win to reach the main draw of the Chennai ATP event.
If he gets thru' the R1 match-ups for the 4 Qualy spots are against Rufin, Sela, Sijsling or Stakhovsky.

QR1: (q7) James Ward WR 250 beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert (FRA, #257) 7-5, 6-4
QR2: (q7) James Ward WR 250 beat Saketh Myneni (IND, #384) 3-6 6-3 6-4

FQR: (q7) James Ward WR 250 vs. Prakash Amritraj (IND, #549, CH#154 in 2009).
James has played Amritraj once before, at the Rimouski Challenger in November 2008, winning 6-1 4-2 ret. The Indian was out injured for 2 years from Aug 2010 to Aug 2012 so is undoubtedly playing better than his current ranking would suggest.

:taz:

It's been raining for the last 2 days so no play again today and they've only completed R1.
The event is due to finish on Saturday (to allow players time to reach events next week).
So, at this rate they'll have to play R2 and QF on Friday and SF and F on Saturday.

James celebrates his 26th birthday by reaching the Final of the West Lakes Challenger in Adelaide :-)

SF: James Ward WR 263 beat (WC) Nick Kyrgios (AUS) WR 843 by 6-4 5-7 6-1

James is now level on points with Jamie Baker.

FINAL: James Ward WR 263 v (SE) Matthew Barton (AUS) WR 345 (= CH)

H2H 1-0 - James beat Barton 3-6 6-3 7-6(3) in the semis of Kaohsiung Fut. last April. Barton is at a career high after reaching the Burnie semis last week.

James is the first Brit to make a Challenger singles Final since he himself won Vancouver 18 months ago. He has now made 4 of GB's last 5 Challenger singles Finals and is only the third Brit this century to make more than three Challenger singles Finals, after Boggo, who has made 13 (W 9 L 4), and Big Arv, who made 7 (W 2 L 5) or 5 (W 2 L 3 ) if you count the 21st century as not starting until 2001.

FINALS

13.00 (02.30 UK): James Ward (GBR) v Matthew Barton (AUS)

Sallydaisy

The Aussie won; Matthew Barton d James Ward 6'2, 6'3.
Disappointing really from James but I guess it's only his 3rd event since returning from a 3month injury lay-off. He's not in action next week but probably travelling from OZ to the USA as he's at the Salinas Challenger w/c 18/2/13 and presumably then trying to get into events like Delray Beach and Qualies for I/Wells.

Wardy updates

Week 9, CH Salinas
R1: James Ward (GBR, WR205) beaten by (8) Gianluca Naso (ITA, WR196) by 6-4 6-7(5) 6-3

Week 10, CH Santiago (Chile), R1
R1: James Ward (GBR, WR207) was beaten by [5] Antonio Veic (CRO, WR129) 7-6(6) 6-1
There was a stream and those commenting on the match reported that it was poor from both players.
However, a possible explanation for Wardy's loss appears on the withdrawal section of the Doubles draw sheet: T. de Bakker / J. Ward - J. Ward (Pain in right knee)

Week 11, CH Dallas (Texas) Lost in QR1 to Ollie Rochus

Week 12, CH Rimouski (Canada)
R2: L to Suzuki

Week 13, dnp (return to UK for Davis Cup practice)

Week 14, Davis Cup Tie, GBR v RUS
L to Donskoy on day 1, W over Tursunov to level tie at 2-2. Evans went on to win 5th rubber.

Wardy is back on the road ...

After his heroics in Coventry last weekend at the Davis Cup tie, where he played 2 x 5-setters to help win for GBR, James is back in the USA. This time on clay courts and at an event which he's already won!!!

Unfortunatly, he's drawn the only other Brit in the draw in Round 1 (upcoming, good clay player, Kyle Edmund) and whichever of them wins will have a very tough R2 match. There's a very strong field at this event and likely to be at the next few US clay Challengers (2) because apparently the US players who participate get points and they add up to a Wild Card into the main draw at Roland Garros!!!

There's a separate thread (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1836) for the Sarasota Doubles where Jamie Murray is playing with John Peers.

A crazy day in China today - the three highest-ranked players left in all lost, leaving James as the highest-ranked player left in the draw.

James himself played an abysmal 1st set against Petrovic, only winning 5 points, and only managed to win 2 points in the Serb's first 6 service games.

He finally got a few more points against the serve and even got break points (4 of them!) but the Serb saved them all and then broke, leaving him serving for the match.

Drinking in the last chance saloon, as it were, James finaly got the break for *5-5 in the 2nd and they ended up in a tiebreak, where all looked lost again as James went *2-5 down, albeit just one mini-break.

Then, though, he won 5 points in a row to take the tiebreak and handed out a bagel of his own in the 3rd to win 0-6 7-6(5) 6-0.

Not pretty, but some comeback, and he is into his 2nd Challenger semi-final of the year! :)

Wardy is having a good run at the Lexington Challenger and has reached the Final.

From Steven on BT.net:-

SF: James Ward WR 239 beat (WC) Filip Peliwo (CAN) WR 434 (= CH) by 0 & 1 http://www.sparkimg.com/emoticons/smile.gif

FINAL: James Ward WR 239 v (6) James Duckworth (AUS) WR 167 (CH 164 last week)

H2H 2-0 - James beat him in back to back Challengers in Australia earlier this year, the first time in 3 sets, the second in straights.

This will be Wardy's 6th Challenger singles final (W 2 L 3), 3rd this year and 2nd in Lexington - Odesnik beat him in the 2011 Final.

It looks like today's win should take him back into the top 200 too http://www.sparkimg.com/emoticons/smile.gif

This is a really sad week for James (and his many fans) as he loses 80 points for winning Bangalore challenger last year and loses not only his gb #5 slot but roughly 100 more places dropping to around #350 next week and to gb #11.
The good news he is playing the Pune ch next week but the bad news is he has another 27 points to defend as he reached the SF last year.
Cmon Wardy, time to get some wins and climb back up the rankings!

This really is great news, I'm so glad he's looking to make a come back. It's hard having to choose between a coach and a physio but he knows what he needs, he has a good head on his shoulders and I'm sure he made the right choice. Good luck James!

Teresa
03-03-2017, 07:24
Whatever else James has done and will do in his career he will always have the satisfaction of knowing he played a pivotal role in that Davis Cup win. He was the only Brit not named Murray who won a match in the course of the year. The slaying of Isner was a truly David and a Goliath moment, and not the only one he has had in DC. I am a Murray fan to the core, but that match remains my favourite DC match, although the final lob to win the thing executed to perfection by a certain Knight of the Realm is my top point. Hope James looks at his DC trophy and gets a warm glow.

glenys
03-03-2017, 20:19
Am sure he will, and as you say whatever happens, he (and us) will ALWAYS have that match - not the only time he'd done heroics at DC, but by far the most important. I really don't think we'd have won it without him. I don't think Andy & Jamie would have beaten the Bryans, and then Andy would have been shattered taking on Isner.

Oh, and how many other players can say the lobbed Isner!

Wardy is playing in Chengdu Challenger - he squeaked into the main draw on his Protected Ranking

He drew Richardas Berankis 5th seed

He's playing qualies in Leon Mexico - won his first match straight sets, we had a Wardy breadstick - and he was a break up in the 2nd - then broken back, a tiebreak was forced and he won that 7-2

88% points won on first serve - 52% First serves in 10 aces and 5 double faults

Getting better on the stats
