Julien Benneteau is Andy's next opponent in Monte Carlo.
The Frenchman posted a 2 sets win over Jurgen Melzer earlier today extending his H2H over the Austrian to 5-2!!!.
One of the older tour stalwarts he's played well over the last few months and is now ranked in the 30's after a couple of years in the 50-100 range. Despite listing clay as one of his favourite surfaces his career W/L record isn't that great - 37/46 compared to Andy on 38/26!!!
"Muzzah" and "Bennet" have met twice before and the H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=B747) is 2-0 to the Brit - but it's been a while so the first few games of their match could be interesting as they suss out each others tactics.
Their matches so far have been:-
2009 Cincinatti Masters, Quarters
Andy won 4-6, 6-3, 6-1
2006 Wimbledon, R64
Andy (then ranked WR#44) won 7-6(5), 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 against WR#55 Benneteau
Hopefully Andy'll come out all guns blazing as he did against Troicki - otherwise Julien might sneak a set of him as he has at their last 2 encounters.
The match is likely to be played on Thursday, time tbc.
:p
Andy is 1st on Court Central 9.30 am!!!!(UK)

Crumbs - that's an early kick-off for Muzzah.
Makes sense though 'cos he's scheduled to play doubles with Jamie v the Bryans around 12.30pm.
Busy day.

Has anyone told Jurgen he's German? ;)

Well he does speak German.
Ive never liked this guy , hopefully a beat down is coming.
Has anyone told Jurgen he's German? ;)
We have an Austrian son-in-law who would not be happy to be called German - it's akin to calling a Scot English!
The Very Best of Luck Andy!!!!!

of course not taking Benneteau lightly but think he is probably a better match up that Melzer would've been. An in form Andy should certainly have too much skill and guile for the frenchman but Murray must produce on the day and it is an early start! Julien has caused some trouble in the past but of course they haven;t met for some time. Here's hoping that Andy will be very much in the groove, let's go!
good luck Andy!! -
won't be able to see this one or follow LS
come on Andy!! :swingin:
Hopefully I'll get to watch a little of this, hoping to see slices aplenty.

Benneteau serving extremely well at the moment, Andy will need to demonstrate that he is one of the best returners in the game. Shouldn't have a problem though, hope he plays as well as in the 2nd round, really enjoyed that match.
Best of luck, Andy:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::)

Phew! I switched on the computer in good time - and just as well, the mouse had decided to die on me. I know there are ways to use just the keyboard but I had forgotten them. All well now though, just needed new batteries.

Brilliant stream. Thanks Lynne.
Corr he got out of bed the wrong side this morning, what a roar.
Wondering if the commentator left his notes at the hotel room, if he says 'definitely not happy with himself' or words to that effect one more time this morning....
How did the camera just do that?!

Andy does seem to break strings a lot.

Let's put some pressure on the serve. C'mon Andy!
Benneteau playing really well. But has he the stamina to keep going? Andy has!

19-04-2012, 09:37
OH welll... focus, safe hold. C'mon Andy!
Andy must be missing his hair.
Morning all. Just back. Looks close.
Come on Andy....see this set out now!!!

OK. Let's get the set! C'mon Andy!
Perhaps Andy stayed up too late at the players' party last night?

30-30 Next two points please!

Hmmm, I've just come back from a meeting and the match had just started when I turned on the radio; at which point Andy had broken Benny in his first service game to go 2-0 up. Just off to load up a stream. Has he woken up or is he grumpy this morning?
 it's wide!!!!...........COME ON ANDY!!!!
david1610
19-04-2012, 09:49
Oh well. Let it go. Just....
Focus. Safe hold. C'mon Andy!
Benneteau playing really well Sally....giving our man something to think about!
Oh no...Benneteau injured. Awful.
oh this looks bad for Benneteau
My goodness, he's crying in pain hear,
Reminds you of Murrays injury,
replays show that was an absolute horror.
Andy's saying theres holes in the court.
david1610
19-04-2012, 09:53
Oh dear! Andy now telling the umpire there are holes all over the court.
That poor guy, as you say brings back memories of Andy!!

Was it ice bags Andy took over? Nice gesture, whatever it was.
How on earth is he going to continue playing with an injury like that. It looked so painful. I remember when Andy did his ankle in.
Yes it was ice bags Madeline!

Now we will find out how much was physiological and how much psychological damage was done.
I'm amazed. Surely he must retire?
Sallydaisy
19-04-2012, 10:05
Not sure it's wise for Benny to continue - could muck up his entire clay court season.
Feel so sorry for Benneteau. He played so well. Onwards for Andy!!
david1610
19-04-2012, 10:07
And retires. Was surprising he even tried.
Oh well. not the ideal way but these things happen...
and he retires. Not the best way for Andy to win, but on to the next round.
Well it was a decent match, what there was of it. Andy's first serve was pretty appalling, practically half what it was against Troicki. So up and down that part of his game, its so bizarre.
Sallydaisy
19-04-2012, 10:09
Eh bien, mesdames et messieurs, c'est ca.
Andy wins 6'5 by retirement.
Commiserations to Julien Benneteau and I hope he recovers quickly.
It looks as though Andy was struggling this morning and came up against Benneteau on a very good day. I still think Andy would have battled through ......
Benneteau retires - such a shame. It has been exciting and nerve-wracking to watch. At least Andy has had a good workout on court
Feel sorry for Benneteau, he was really pushing Andy today. Sad that the match ended on a retirement.
Madeline
19-04-2012, 10:10
I think Andy would have won in the end anyway, I doubt if Benneteau could have kept up that level of play: he was looking pretty winded after some of those long rallies. He was indeed playing very well though, and Andy was certainly not at his best.

is the doubles televised ??
Well not the way I would of liked Andy to win but what can one do! I am quite appalled at the state of the courts by what Andy was saying surely players safety is a must especially at such a prestigious tournament......but what do I know!!!
OK. Will have Berdych match on in background while I get on with some work. Bye for now and see you at Andy's next match. :)
is the doubles televised ??
No I don't think so as I can't find a stream for it!:grrr:

Rarely get ATP doubles televised except at Wimbledon. Shame the match ended like that, was hoping Andy's play would improve as the match went on.

Missed it, how did Andy play guys? And what injury forced Benny to retire?

Benneteau fell really badly on his ankle and also sustained a wrist injury. A very competitive set up till then. Andy missed a few shots and showed some frustration but still looked on course at the point of point of Benneteau's retirement.

It's a shame about poor Benny, I hope he recovers quickly.
Go Andy, seems to be a bad day for Monte-Carlo, what with injury and Djokovic's grandfather dying.
And now it's raining which might upset the schedules and when Andy'll be playing his doubles.
He definitely was a bit sluggish and out of sorts; but you did feel/hope that he would start picking it up.
Oh well, hopefully he's got it out of his system before meeting Berdych :nervous:
EDIT Just seen on LS that Court 2 have continued playing and Meyer/Melzer [the match before the Murrays] have just won. So maybe the doubles will be soon-ish?
They're showing the Andy/Rafa semi from last year - great stuff. Have to say I like the curls!

19-04-2012, 12:21
Not ideal for Andy and a real pity for Benny (seen Andy said the court was slippery) but I'm sure it will still have been a usefull workout. Hopefully beneficial that Andy was given a bit of a challenge even if he didn't really hit top form today. Sure he can step it up against Berdy!

Benneteau has a broken arm and ligament damage in his ankle as well as a wrist sprain.
He's likely to miss the rest of the clay season and maybe even Wimbledon.
Incredible that he was even thinking of continuing to play this morning.
Poor guy! The 2nd player this week to see his tennis season in tatters.
His performance here could see him reach a career high next week too!

Ouch! Must have been quite a fall to actually break something - relatively rare in tennis! I din't actually see the incident - did it look bad at the time?

Yep, there's a picture and video here. (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=11916106&postcount=829) He was in tears the moment he fell.
Initially it looked as though it was his wrist (which he landed on to take the fall) but he had to be helped to his chair 'cos his ankle hurt so much and they attended to that first. It was only after he'd returned to the court and played out the last 2 points of the 11th game that he asked for the doctor to look at his wrist/arm. Even then it didn't seem as though the elbow might be broken.
^^^ Wow, poor Benneteau. Mind you, they seemed to do so much manipulating of his arm on court - which I suppose wouldn't have helped. Hope he makes a speedy recovery.
That just reminds me, remember Andy's reaction when they poured that iodine on his finger....ouch! [definitely a match to swiftly move on from]

Wow, that video was amazing! You can't quite tell on the full speed shot, but the replay made me shudder! Ouchhh!!
I can't believe he tried to play after that - noticed his hand clasp with Andy used the injured arm! Same when he shook hands with the umpire! I know he was in tears initially, but boy these guys are tough!
Thanks Sally!

I was thinking that too. It's obviously not on the video but at the change of ends at 6-5 the Umpire announced another 3 minute medical time out for the wrist (the earlier one had been for his ankle) and the physio was working Benny's arm round and round for about half that time!!!

I just couldn't understand why they were manipulating his arm so roughly when they didn't know whether anything was broken or not. The pain must have been excruciating and it certainly can't have done it any good.

Maybe adrenalin masks some of the pain at this stage? - though tbh I thought at the time that their initial examination/treatment of his ankle didn't really inspire confidence either! Let's hope there are no more incidents.
