Masters Guinot MaryCohr, Paris Country Club
http://www.pariscountryclub.com/

23rd - 26th May 2012

This is an exhibition event held each year before Roland Garros - the equivalent of the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne and the Boodles in the UK before Wimbledon.
It attracts some of the top players wanting practice ahead of the main event.

This has just come in from twitter via Carole Bouchard:

Murray et Tsonga annoncés au Masters Guinot Mary Cohr (23-25/O5) avec Monfils, Llodra, Nalbandian, Gulbis, Baghdatis et Dolgopolov.

Quite a good group of guys there!

There's quite a lot of information on Wikipedia here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masters_Guinot-Mary_Cohr) - including a score chart between the teams for Guinot and MaryCohr.

This is the main website (http://www.guinotmarycohrmasters.com/#/accueil) and a link (http://www.guinotmarycohrmasters.com/#/infos) to schedule/player etc

Sounds like a great lineup! But I don't think we usually get a livestream, do we?

They have shown one or two of the matches on Sky in previous years.

Bit confused that Andy seems to have come back to London before goign to Paris - wonder if that's to do with medical issues?

Benneteau? Crumbs he must have made a speedy recovery!

Has he? Where was that reported?
Perhaps he just wanted to have a day or so at home ahead of RG and travelled back to Paris with Kim, Maggie and Rusty?

According to livescorehunter, Andy's match is at 12 noon (presumably 11am here). They would put it on in the only time in the day when I will be out, wouldn't they. . .

Doubt if any of them take this seriously. The results are neither here nor there IMHO. Just fun and a work out without risking anything physically - at least I hope that's how Andy treats it.

I'm doing some serious multi-tasking today! One eye on Andy's match, another on Hev's livescore, following torchcam (http://www.bbc.co.uk/torchrelay/day6)thru' Herefordshire and trying to work at the same time .....

Nice early break for Muzz, serving at *2-1, 30-0 ....

Sallydaisy
24-05-2012, 10:30
3-1 to Andy; Ernie to serve next.

How well I remember sitting courtside at Roland Garros in 2009 watching these guys play.
It was sooooooooooo hot that day; and Andy lost.
:hmm:
Think he's got a lot better on the clay since then.

Golden Lady
24-05-2012, 10:50
Ernie's just broken back  4-4.

SamP

From 4-1 up with two breaks of serve he's back to 4-4...

Sallydaisy

Hmm, Andy dropped serve and Ernie held so it's Muzz now *4-5 serving to stay in the first set.

SamP

Andy looks like he's in a really bad place right now mentally, how many times now has he come out aggressive and then ended up going to pot. It's happened again here. He might well win the match, but something is horribly wrong.

Tie-break
24-05-2012, 11:07
More like lack of concentration. It's (only) an exho after all. Got to try out a few things, give the spectators their money's worth. Andy is moving quite well which is reassuring.

Sallydaisy
24-05-2012, 11:15
Ernie 7'6 first set.

I'm not overly bothered by the scoreline in this; it's a warm-up for the French Open.

A day to play a match without pressure in the practice week before a Grand Slam, try out some things and get into the Parisian swing. If it goes to 3 sets it's fine with me - I like watching these two play - 'cos that's more court time.

But, erm, go Muzzah!

SamP
24-05-2012, 11:16
Well this is going great. lost the set 7-6.

To be quite honest, i'd like to see him just pull out of the French.

1st set to Gulbis.

pabbers
24-05-2012, 11:16
Not sure he is moving that well and he clutched his side at one point. This is where I hope he isn't taking it that seriously because if this is his usual competitive self we're not going to see him in the second week of RG.

Sallydaisy
24-05-2012, 11:19
To be quite honest, i'd like to see him just pull out of the French.
Perhaps playing today will help make a decision about his back?
Might be better out of RG for him long term over the next 3 months for Wimbers, Olympics and USO?

I'm with you both. Andy has so much to play for on the grass and looking ahead to the US Open. To be honest I would be relieved if he were to pull out of RG as I don't want to see him suffer an early loss, which looks possible I'm afraid.

SamP
24-05-2012, 11:25
Chances are, if he pulled out he'd still just hang onto fourth in the rankings.

pabbers
24-05-2012, 11:27
I agree - seem to remember Monfils pulling out after this tournament last year or the year before. Shame but Andy shouldn't risk his health. Also it must be a waste of money engaging Lendl if he can't execute the things Lendl is suggesting. Plus every loss (even here) must be a dent in Andy's confidence and a boost for those who wouldn't normally feel they stand a chance.

SamP
24-05-2012, 11:29
This is just a waste of time now, he's not even trying.

patmoren
24-05-2012, 11:30
I know it is only an exho but if Gulbis wins in 2 which looks likely, noone is going to be afraid of Andy next week, which make it that much harder for Andy. Impressions are everything.

Sallydaisy
24-05-2012, 11:44
5-4 to Andy in the 2nd set; Ernie to serve to stay in it.

Very disappointed with the outcome and of course the fact that Andy still has trouble with his back.Suppose he will have to carefullly consider if it is in his best interests to play the French. Though, unless it 's serious expect Andy to be there.

SamP
24-05-2012, 12:29
This season has gone from optimism of Brisbane and Australia and dubai, to uncertainty in America and its now bordering on a train wreck if he exits the French early.

In a season which will probably define his career (Llendl, turning 25 and the Olympics/Wimbledon-athon) I think he needs to make a big decision now to make something out of this year, otherwise it could be a serious disaster. If he's not over 90% fit, he should not play the french, its the only expendable tournament over the summer as I see it.

Alis
24-05-2012, 12:37
I really hope he pulls out too - far better that than going out in the first round which could well happen given today's showing. Even the on court interviewer advised Andy to 'take a rest' and Boris Becker - who usually pulls no punches about Andy - advises him to do the same.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/andymurray/9285527/Boris-Becker-urges-Andy-Murray-to-pull-out-of-French-Open-rather-than-risk-serious-injury.html

Agreed would be a wise move not to play the French IMHO. Bigger and more defining events for Andy on the horizon.

I can't believe what I have been reading. It was an exhibition for God's sake. Are you advising Del Po to pull out of RG because he lost to an also ran. Andy looked fine to me, it was a good work out and his movement was fine. Verdasco is not knocking the young Canadian off the court at the moment, the top players are just using this as a good practice. Andy was completely relaxed and not a bit bothered, I suggest that we should be the same.

I agree Mickey. The crowd didn't seem bothered either, there was no atmosphere - even during the good rallies, of which there were quite a few. I am sure the people in a position to judge will know if Andy is fit enough to play next week. I for one hope he is.

Andy's back problem is worrying because back....and long-term often go together. I am sure he will be sensible about looking after it.
But as I have said before, clay is clay and there is no point in starting to form opinions about the rest of the season based on clay.

Give him and Lendl a bit more time. I just want him able to play injury free. If he has a bad RG it is not necessarily the end of the world!

I dont think we should be that worried he lost in two tiebreaks and he isnt renowned for winning them anyway. It was a close match and not an important one just some exercise to get his back working I should imagine.
Roll on RG I am positive he will step up his game.

If there was any possibility that he shouldn't be playing because of his back, then he certainly wouldn't have played an exhibition match!

^^^^ Well maybe he would - just to try it out. I found it interesting that up to 4-1, 40-0 he hardly made an error and after that he was all over the show - very similar in pattern to the Gasquet match. Anyway, he did say in his post-match interview that he was looking forward to RG, so I assume that he will play.

It's a good scenario to test it out though. The back is not something to mess around with, My injuries stemmed from my lower spine and prevented me from playing competitive football in just over 3 years. Only getting back into it now. Fingers crossed Andy is OK but if he does decide to give RG a miss it would be 100% understandable.
