Judy tweeted yesterday from Liverpool Lime Street Station and then from Wigan North Western. She said that the waiting room on platform 5 at Wigan was hardly the BA Lounge and a young woman was changing her socks. Those Wiganers!!:lol::lol: She had been in Liverpool doing sport with young people and then obviously got the train to Wigan to catch, I thought, the train to Edinburgh or Glasgow. Then this evening she tweets that she is in a posh Hampshire hotel. Confusing as trains do go to London from Lime Street.

21 Nov: She must have travelled by train to Liverpool and then onto a nearby station for Set4Sport events at 2 schools on the Wirral (Ganneys and Upton). It probably made sense to travel back from Chester? and change at Wigan on the return journey.

I think it's worth quoting what Andy said there:

Judy's book arrived on the 9th and I finished reading it yesterday. Absolutely enthralling. When I read about the obstacles she and the boys faced, the financial problems and reaction and response from people who could have helped I was just in awe of her sheer cussedness. I chuckled, was tearful but mainly filled with admiration for her and Jamie and Andy.

This phrase grates though 'raised two champions almost single-handedly'. I suppose it could refer only to the tennis coaching and encouraging side, but it seems a bit wrong to dismiss Willie Murray's role, especially as he was the main carer after she left the family home.

I think some of what Judy says here is really denigrating to females who want to be successful - either as athletes or in any other field. Why should they have to show an interest in the Kardahsians or fashion and glamour?
The Telegraph has distorted the original article in the Radio Times (which I have read) and given it a misleading headline. I do get what Judy is trying to say, but I really think this is a very negative thing to say to women. Direct quote:
“Female tennis players need to be encouraged to raise their profiles in other avenues than on the sports pages of newspapers. If you have an engaging personality or you can show that you are interested in the Kardashians, or fashion, things that other girls like, then you are far more likely to engage with a female audience. Girls are much more image-conscious at a younger age. It’s almost like they grow up too soon.”
Speaking to Radio Times, the mother of British number one Andy Murray said female players “have to understand the business of being a professional athlete. If your marketability is going to be significantly increased by engaging yourself and being seen more by fans - and more potential sponsors - then that is what you need to do.”
However, in the same publication, British number three Heather Watson - who has been coached by Murray - said fashion and make-up were the last things on her mind.
“I actually love wearing sports clothes, having my hair tied up in a bun, not wearing make-up and I think more girls should feel comfortable in their own skin and not have to cover themselves in make-up all the time,” she said. “I do love putting make-up on but you don’t have to wear it every single day and you don’t have to change your body to look like pictures you see on the internet.”

Better if female athletes show an interest in social causes, or human rights or anything but the goddamn Kardashians!
And what if you are not conventionally pretty or 'glamorous' and want to play tennis. Surely makes it harder if you're told you should emphasise your looks and views on fashion and trivialities!

I haven't seen/heard the original interview with Judy, but those do seem to be some very bizarre comments. I'm not against female players promoting their marketability. Gabriela Sabatini, was one of my all time faves, just loved her and she was one of the first and most successful women to market themselves very commercially....BUT she was also (virtually) universally loved by fellow players and fans alike because she was such a nice person. For example, she was the only top 10 player to vote in favour of protecting Seles' no 1 ranking after she was attacked. Plus you never got the impression with her that tennis was secondary; her losses to Steffi, Monica, etc were because she never quite had the beating of them, not because she wasn't committed. In other words, fans can be fine with marketability if the player is fundamentally respected/like for more substantial reasons, but what on earth have the likes of Kournikova or Bouchard ever brought to the game?? I would strongly suggest that players such as these two turn many off.
Have an attractive game and a decent, likeable personality and fans will be drawn to you, that's all that matters and really what Judy should be saying imo.

I can't imagine that she has ever expressed an interest in the Kardahsians - yet she has been universally admired for her dedication to her sport and her engaging personality. It seems from Judy's tweet that she feels she has been misrepresented - that wouldn't be in the least suprising and not for the first time!

The headline did misrepresent the whole interview and emphasise something which I don't think Judy meant to - but she did say in the Radio Times interview exactly what I have quoted above. She maybe was trying to make a point about marketing yourself as a female tennis player, but I think talking about looks and fashion and the Kardashians is the wrong way to do that.

I heard what I think may be the original interview with Judy on BBC Radio Scotland at the weekend(?) but it does not seem to be available on iplayer to check her words but I am always wary of what is printed as it may be the journalist's interpretation and not exactly what was intended by the speaker. Judy's tweet would seem to indicate that is the case here.

There is an interview which she gave to the Radio Times. In it what she says are in quote marks - that means a direct quote from a recording of the interview. They are as in my post above. I think Judy has got in a muddle with what she wanted to say but I think this is a bit of a foot in mouth one.

Ive heard her talk about the differences in engaging little girls to boys - girls are more interested in the stories behsind the people and boys more about the shots and tactics. If that's what she meant then I'm in total agreement with her.
We need different strategies to engage the different genders at grass roots and beyond. She's so right about the male dominated aspect of tennis - key decisions are made by men which primarily engage men - in a world of predominantly male dominated media power bosses. There's sexism and there's differences in how we think. Both exist.
I'll stop ranting now!
Judy is an amazing role model and really understands tennis in a way that few do - especially women's tennis.
There's a lot of fear out there too about strong women who Buck the status quo.
I'm sure she's been misunderstood. Shame because she's come such a long way with the press and the public!

I think Judy only had a problem with the title and I actually think Kournikova or Bouchard may not encourage those who are already tennis fans but whether we like it or not for non tennis fans they just might be quite interesting.......

At last! Thank goodness and well done Judy for sticking with it. I think it will be fantastic for Scotland - it's a very accessible location with great road and rail networks close by and yet, for a change, outwith both Edinburgh and Glasgow! I couldn't be more pleased.

Just finished Judy's book and would say it's a must for every Murray fan. What an inspirational and very determined lady she is, and above all a very sensible one. No wonder those two boys turned out so well :thumbup:

I've known, for a few weeks, about Judy being on the Christmas special of Strictly Come Dancing. I don't usually watch the Christmas edition, but I might watch it this year.
Judy's book is one of the few books which made it to me to Canada! Such a great read!

Interesting interview with Judy by Simon Hattenstone who wrote the truly deplorable article about Andy all these years ago. Wonderful the way she both nails him for it and charms him. I suppose he sort of admits he was wrong - but not entirely - at least he owns up to it.
