I know, I just prefer Rome to Madrid and would rather Rafa be fresher for that tournament. Even though I suppose Madrid is more important to him seeing as he's Spanish.

I don't know that it is - I don't think Rafa has always played Madrid. Maybe wrong but I'm sure I read something about the altitude not suiting him.
Rafa certainly doesn't like playing Madrid, mainly because of the altitude but also, this year, because of the blue clay that they are going to be playing on. Both Rafa and Roger have made vigorous protests, but Tiriac won't take any notice of them.
Although Rafa has no objection to the city of Madrid per se - he supports Real Madrid and will be playing an exho at the Bernabeu with Nole late July (on grass - I suppose it's a bit of extra practice on the surface for them before the Olympics).

But he probably feels obliged to play it even if it's not one of his favourites. For me Rome has always been one of my faves ever since Rafa beat Fed in that epic five-setter way back in 2006 or whenever.
After Djoko's post-match comments yesterday it will be interesting to hear what Rafa has to say about the court post match today.

I also remember that when Madrid became clay and was given that slot, it slightly put Rafa's clay season out of kilter. He obviously feels obliged to do well, but, even before the blue clay, that can come at a cost.

Tough draw, BUT, hopefully no big hitting Berdych, Raonic or Del Potro in sight, so I think he could have a great run here if he moves well.
You'd have thought they'd have used a blue pen not a red one for the draw - easier to see. Or are they wanting the colour of the pens the same as the clay.

Nope - 6'3" so no one taller than Andy can play and I really don't want Berdy to win this afternoon - 1000 points! I've just said elsewhere that Rafa, Nole or Andy can sort Roger out and slap him back down in Rome!
Berdy is 6'5" - the commies said so and it's also on his ATP profile. Not that it did him any good in the end. :sad:
Another 6'5" player (Raonic) has just lost the first set to Mayer on a TB.
and Milos has in fact lost to Mayer 7-6, 6-4. Fiona needn't have worried about him playing Rafa in R2!

I've noticed a few commentators saying that the stands weren't full at Madrid or very much in Rome so far. Always surprises me 'cos the tickets are cheaper on the first few days and all the players are milling around so you get chance to see them!
I guess people are at work and maybe can't afford it.
I've never understood why they don't ship in loads of school kids to fill the spaces.
The players are probably used to it because as they work up through the rankings they've probably played matches in Futures and Challengers with 2 or 3 peeps in the stands.
I see there is someone on Twitter calling himself "Fognini for no.1"! A tad optimistic I think. This has been rather a disappointing match to watch after Andy/Nalby yesterday - these two are nowhere near them. (I didn't pick either of them to win this match in the Bracket!) Although as I type, Fabio seems to be waking up - though he may have left if rather late . . .

Great stuff from Seppi - really exciting to watch. It must have felt like an away Davis Cup tie for Isner - playing the whole stadium as well as Seppi - great atmosphere though. If only Andy had that sort of support at Wimbledon!

Rafa was breathtakingly awesome today. Berdych was really good as well yet he still went out in straights.

I can only hope that Fed gets Berdych in the quarter-final of the French.
Federer's draws have returned to normal after the "brutal draw" of the last tournament - his words not mine, According to some of his fans who emailed Sky, there must have been a conspiracy as his draw was so tough but for us it was good seeing him have to play some opponents we had actually heard of.

I can't see the first match scheduled on Sky but I believe it will be on the red button. Sky mentioned something yesterday at the end of the program.
Whew! What a match! Ferrer came out all guns blazing and threw absolutely everything at Rafa in that first set - by the time it was six games all, an hour and a half had passed (and no, it wasn't due to time between points, it was due to loads of deuces) and they each had the same number of points. Nothing in it. The tiebreak was really close but Rafa finally took it. Ferrer didn't have much left for the second set so Rafa goes through.

Wow that was a strange match. Rafa was behind all the time in that first set yet clung on and prevailed. Dunno what happened in the second set but a bagel? Gotta feel for Ferru. Hope he plays better tomorrow because Fed or Djoko will take advantage of him.
Ferrer gave it his all in the first set and for much of it was the better player. Nadal managed to sneak the tie break and after that Ferrer's heart went out of it. I do feel for him.
Feel so sorry for David. :sad: He tries so hard but it's never enough against Rafa on clay. Just one win would mean so much to him.
I guess it must have just got to him after the first set for his level to go down so much in the second.
Yes, I feel sorry for David too. He looked the better player for much of the first set. But he had 10 break chances and only managed to take one of them. However, if David had won today I doubt that he'd have won the final.

Neil harman just tweeted that the covers are off.
They are saying that if the men's match doesn't start by 8pm (that's 7pm here) then it will be postponed until tomorrow - this is on police advice as they don't want the tennis fans spilling onto the streets at the same time as the football fans (there is a big match this evening right next door).

Certainly was a great performance from Rafa but Nole seemed to lose the edge in the 2nd and made too many errors at crucial times. Fabulous first set, but 2nd wasn't quite the same. Certainly on clay Rafa would appear to have the upper hand again in this match up.

I'm pretty sure that he will be number 2 as I think the seedings for RG are made after Rome. If he'd lost in the final then he would have been number 3.
Great performance from Rafa, his level has definitely improved from last year. He's got all the usual confidence he displays on clay courts. I fully expect him to win RG again.
The final was delayed though to Monday, the following week from the main Rome tournament. Would they wait until the final before updating the rankings?
