Why? Rome is better preparation for RG.

I know, I just prefer Rome to Madrid and would rather Rafa be fresher for that tournament. Even though I suppose Madrid is more important to him seeing as he's Spanish.

I don't know that it is - I don't think Rafa has always played Madrid. Maybe wrong but I'm sure I read something about the altitude not suiting him.

Linda
02-05-2012, 17:13
Rafa certainly doesn't like playing Madrid, mainly because of the altitude but also, this year, because of the blue clay that they are going to be playing on. Both Rafa and Roger have made vigorous protests, but Tiriac won't take any notice of them.

Although Rafa has no objection to the city of Madrid per se - he supports Real Madrid and will be playing an exho at the Bernabeu with Nole late July (on grass - I suppose it's a bit of extra practice on the surface for them before the Olympics).

But he probably feels obliged to play it even if it's not one of his favourites. For me Rome has always been one of my faves ever since Rafa beat Fed in that epic five-setter way back in 2006 or whenever.

After Djoko's post-match comments yesterday it will be interesting to hear what Rafa has to say about the court post match today.

I also remember that when Madrid became clay and was given that slot, it slightly put Rafa's clay season out of kilter. He obviously feels obliged to do well, but, even before the blue clay, that can come at a cost.

WTA brought the big guns out for the draw in Rome... Ana Ivanovic, Francesca Schiavone & Flavia Pennetta. ATP brought...Fabio Fognini.

Andy Murray, Fabio Fognini, and Andreas Seppi here for the men. Well...Andy's holding up this whole thing. Running late.

Murray's Rome route (courtesy of @SI_BTBaseline (https://twitter.com/#!/SI_BTBaseline)) -
R1: Bye.
R2: Nalbandian/Qualifer.
R3: Gasquet.
QF: Ferrer.
SF: Nadal.
F: Djokovic/Federer

Thanks to forum member Raven for the following tweets.

Andy R2 vs a Q or Nalbandian.
Andy & Ferru in the same 1/4
Federer-Nole in top half, Murray-Rafa in bottom half.
Tsonga in Nole's 1/4.

So we can have Milos vs Rafa, Tomic vs Nole and Andy vs Nalby as R2 in Rome. How did Fed manage to pick the draw from Madrid?

You'd have thought they'd have used a blue pen not a red one for the draw - easier to see. Or are they wanting the colour of the pens the same as the clay.

Exactly! What should the maximum allowed height be? 6'6"? We need to allow Berdy to play this afternoon, and he's 6'5".

Nope - 6'3" so no one taller than Andy can play and I really don't want Berdy to win this afternoon - 1000 points! I've just said elsewhere that Rafa, Nole or Andy can sort Roger out and slap him back down in Rome!

Linda
13-05-2012, 18:37
Berdy is 6'5" - the commies said so and it's also on his ATP profile. Not that it did him any good in the end.

Another 6'5" player (Raonic) has just lost the first set to Mayer on a TB.

and Milos has in fact lost to Mayer 7-6, 6-4. Fiona needn't have worried about him playing Rafa in R2!

Monfils d Bogomolov 6'1, 6'4

Rome scores update - slow going really.
Only 3 completed matches and already reported in the thread.
Monfils d Bogomolov, Verdasco d Dolgopolov (ret'd) and Tomic d Giraldo.

Fognini is serving for the match v Baggy at 6'2, *5-2.
Nalbandian leads by a set and a break against Ramos 6'3, 1'0.
Haase/Wawrinka are 1 set apiece.

Hopefully Andy will have something to celebrate this time, though of course he certainly will need to be in form against Nalby. Disappointed Baggy went down tamely to Fognini but the italian can be tough.

Isner has been absolutely dire in this match. He's just not bothering to run after balls and looks like he'd rather not be there.

I should have posted earlier - he's suddenly started trying! Kohli serving for the match and got broken.

Hardly a soul watching Granollers v Fognini. You would think there'd be more people watching considering it's an Italian on court!
I've noticed a few commentators saying that the stands weren't full at Madrid or very much in Rome so far. Always surprises me 'cos the tickets are cheaper on the first few days and all the players are milling around so you get chance to see them!
I guess people are at work and maybe can't afford it.
I've never understood why they don't ship in loads of school kids to fill the spaces.

The players are probably used to it because as they work up through the rankings they've probably played matches in Futures and Challengers with 2 or 3 peeps in the stands.

I see there is someone on Twitter calling himself "Fognini for no.1"! A tad optimistic I think. This has been rather a disappointing match to watch after Andy/Nalby yesterday - these two are nowhere near them. (I didn't pick either of them to win this match in the Bracket!) Although as I type, Fabio seems to be waking up - though he may have left if rather late . . .

Pico takes the first set from Djokovic - vamos Pico!!!!!!!!!

Sallydaisy
17-05-2012, 11:22
Berdych d Almagro 7'6, 6'3.

Monaco has taken the first set off Djokovic 6'4.
The tweeters have much to say about Nole's behaviour!
Barry Flatman:
Djokovic totals his racket in fit of temper after putting 5th set point for Monaco long. That's what happens when you revert to red clay!
Rob Koenig:
Tough conditions during the 1st match on Centrale today, Djok v Monaco. Very blustery. Novak keeps missing long AND Monaco has the Belief!
@sportsworldlee (https://twitter.com/#%21/sportsworldlee)
One match to go before Murray's so probably still a couple of hours away. Great racquet smash from Djokovic after losing 1st set to Monaco

Ferrer v Simon now up on LS.

40-15
17-05-2012, 11:24
well played Pico!! - taking the first set!!

Sallydaisy
17-05-2012, 11:31
Well, Pico got another break against Nole to be serving at *2-1 up in the 2nd.
But Djoko has just broken back so it's on serve at 2-2.

40-15
17-05-2012, 11:44
did Gilles Simon take his racket with him? - currently trailing 5-0 against Ferrer!!

Sallydaisy
17-05-2012, 11:55
did Gilles Simon take his racket with him? - currently trailing 5-0 against Ferrer!!
Perhaps Gillou was being kind and sent his racquet round to Nole to replace the #1's broken bat.
;)

Ferru has now bagelled Gillou; pretty rare at their level.

Sallydaisy
17-05-2012, 12:13
If Ferrer continues to dominate the match v Simon we might have Andy on much sooner than expected.

Sallydaisy
17-05-2012, 12:36
Nole wins: 4'6, 6'2, 6'3. He'll play either Tsonga or Del Potro in the Qtrs.

Sallydaisy
17-05-2012, 12:51
Livescore keeps losing the Ferrer/Simon match!!!

I see Ferrer broke again so they're into a tie-breaker to decide the 2nd set.
Obviously neither of them wants to win this match.

Incredible scenes on Pietrangeli in Rome as Seppi knocks out Stan.
6'7(1), 7'6(6), 7'6(6)
:clap::clap::clap:

Amazing to watch as the match ebbed and flowed and in the end Stan failed to win it with 3 matchpoints to the good and is probably dumbstruck that that Italian found 5 points to come back from the brink and win.

And he breaks in the first game of the 2nd. Deja vu or what?

Sallydaisy
18-05-2012, 12:31
Not deja vu for Richie - Ferrer beat him 7'6(4), 6'3.

Nadal is a break up on Berdych who is serving at *2-4.

18-05-2012, 12:33
Rafa looking to be in impressive form. Unfortunately I have to go out for my French lesson now :grrr:

Alis

Don't take to the man but I have to say Berdych is playing pretty impressively too. Personally, I see him as much more of a threat to Andy than Delpo.

Linda
18-05-2012, 15:30
For someone supposed to be not so good on clay, Tsonga is giving Nole a good workout!

Oh dear, and as I type, he hands Nole the set on a df.

And the wheels have totally fallen off Jo now - within a few minutes Nole is serving for the match at 5-1!

Federer's draws have returned to normal after the "brutal draw" of the last tournament - his words not mine, According to some of his fans who emailed Sky, there must have been a conspiracy as his draw was so tough but for us it was good seeing him have to play some opponents we had actually heard of.

Whew! What a match! Ferrer came out all guns blazing and threw absolutely everything at Rafa in that first set - by the time it was six games all, an hour and a half had passed (and no, it wasn't due to time between points, it was due to loads of deuces) and they each had the same number of points. Nothing in it. The tiebreak was really close but Rafa finally took it. Ferrer didn't have much left for the second set so Rafa goes through.

RoastLamb
19-05-2012, 16:30

Alis
19-05-2012, 16:47
Ferrer gave it his all in the first set and for much of it was the better player. Nadal managed to sneak the tie break and after that Ferrer's heart went out of it. I do feel for him.

Feel so sorry for David. He tries so hard but it's never enough against Rafa on clay. Just one win would mean so much to him.

I guess it must have just got to him after the first set for his level to go down so much in the second.

Linda
19-05-2012, 17:03

Certainly was a great performance from Rafa but Nole seemed to lose the edge in the 2nd and made too many errors at crucial times. Fabulous first set, but 2nd wasn't quite the same. Certainly on clay Rafa would appear to have the upper hand again in this match up.

Does anyone know whether Rafa will be seeded 2 or 3 for Roland Garros? Greg Rusdeski just speaking on the lead up programme was convinced he would be number 3 but that programme will have been made before today's match.

I'm pretty sure that he will be number 2 as I think the seedings for RG are made after Rome. If he'd lost in the final then he would have been number 3.

Great performance from Rafa, his level has definitely improved from last year. He's got all the usual confidence he displays on clay courts. I fully expect him to win RG again.

The final was delayed though to Monday, the following week from the main Rome tournament. Would they wait until the final before updating the rankings?

edit: they are out now

I hardly saw a ball struck in Rome ... so busy at work, late home so no time to watch in the evenings. Can't even get livescore at work let alone a stream .... that's the NHS for you!!!

Very happy Rafa won and is back to no 2. Would be ridiculous if he were seeded 3 for RG when no-one else has won it since 2004!! Quite frankly it's ridiculous he's not seeded no 1 for it but there you go, I guess rankings are rankings

Fed won it in 2009.

Perhaps RG ought to have surface-adjusted rankings like Wimbledon does?
