View Full Version : Bubble Gap 2012 - Madrid: Deadline Sun 6th May 10.00am UK time
Our adventures in the dirt continue on our road to Roland Garros with our next stop in Madrid. Hopefully the weather will be better here, it's been getting rather chilly as of late (Spring? Yeah right...:cold:).
Most of you should know the drill by now - rules of the competition and overall leaderboard posted here (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?538-Bubble-Gap-Championship-2012). The aim of this competition is to guess the bubble gap after Madrid. The current race rankings are as follows:
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/2728/race5512.jpg
The current bubble gap is 925. That's Andy's score(2150) – Almagro's score(1225) = 925.
There are 3 250 tournaments running this week: Estoril, Serbia and Munich. Red players are playing in Estoril and green players are playing in Munich. Whatever happens in these tournaments the BG will not change (Tsonga was playing in Munich but went out in his 1st match).
Note that Andy has withdrawn from Madrid.
The highest possible bubble gap is 915. That's Almagro losing in his 1st match and no-one overtaking him.
The smallest (mathematical) bubble gap is 565. This involves a permutation with Tipsarevic winning and Simon the finalist.
So in summary, your guess is between 565 and 915.
Remember that you can't guess the same number as someone else and once you've posted your guess you can't change it.
Ranking points on offer for Madrid are:
R1: 10
R2: 45
R3: 90
QF: 180
SF: 360
F: 600
W: 1000
Good luck to all who take part and may the best driver win!:trophy:
Deadline: Sunday 6th May, 1pm UK time*
*Provisional deadline. Back in Monte Carlo, I only had the 'Program of the week' section of the ATP website to go by when choosing a deadline, but it was changed on the day the tourney started. The Madrid website is even more helpful in that it gives no details at all. My search through unofficial sources tell me that the 6th May has 2nd round qualifying and 1st round matches and that play starts at 11am (10am UK time). It's very likely that main draw matches won't start until later but I won't know exactly when until Saturday evening.

1000 please
I assume that our entries for this are all null and void now?

Did Rondun run BGs when Andy wasn't playing? He played all the Masters last year so I'm not sure. Anyway we have 2 choices:
We scrap this BG completely.
We still run one but obviously with Andy not playing the BG is a lot tighter (between 565 and 915).
If we go with the 2nd I'll have to scrap the entries above and hopefully the people who already entered will see this (or see the PM i send them).
Any thoughts?
I don't mind either way. Obviously I'm one of those who would have to make a new guess if we continue, but some people might not see it so it might be best to scrap it completely. I can't remember whether there were BGs in the past when Andy didn't play - I think probably not.

Yes, I remember J saying that he won't have internet access this weekend. Ok, here's what I'll do (although this probably won't work out):
I'll keep the BG running for now and update the 1st post.
I'll PM everyone who entered so far and ask them to enter again.
To be as fair as possible to those who aready entered, if they don't all manage to enter by the deadline, I'll scrap the BG.
This ok for everyone?
That seems very fair.
My revised guess is 825.
I would say scrapping it would be best but i'll go for 745 just in case i'm the only one who doesn't re-enter.
Scrap it? - don't be ridiculous - the show must always go on! Thought you'd know that by now!
I'll take 750

Please don't scrap it! I love this competition! I had so much fun last time on the old forum, got 2nd place on my debut race on this forum- lets hope the luck (rather skill!) continues!!

Invalidated! :red devil: Just joking.
Less than 24 hours to go. Need to wait until this evening to know the OOP. It's highly unlikely that the first matches will be main draw ones so the deadline will probably be closer to 11am UK time.
I know that there are quite a few who want this BG to run but I feel that I have to stand by what I said and that the people who entered before Andy's withdrawal have to enter for this BG to run. Currently I need entries from DaveArneRiise, Golden Lady and -J-. I've PMed them but if anyone can contact them through any other means it would be great if you could. -J- in particular because I think he has no net access this weekend.
Fingers crossed we'll have a race!

725, my revised guess. :thanks: Manaus
Don't think J does mobiles now. I imagine he went for 1314 for its historical significance so I don't think he would object if you went 843 for him as that was when the first King of Scotland was crowned.

I'd assumed we wouldn't be running this but there's obviously still interest so would be good if we can go ahead. I'll go for 735. Good idea for J, AllyB!

Nice idea.
Well if DaveArneRiise manages to get his entry in before the deadline then I'll put 843 down as J's entry (unless J makes it back in time).
Is Dave on Twitter?
NB looking at Dave's original guess, he obviously expected Andy to reach the quarters so you could just subtract 360.

Thanks for everyone's entries so far.
Also thanks to all those who entered before Andy withdrew. You'll all managed to re-enter so the race will go on. :)
Looking at the OOP the first main draw match today will be the 2nd match on the main court (Davydenko/Karlovic) after a women's match so the deadline for entries will be around 11am UK time. So anyone who still wants to enter you have around 2 hours to post your entry.
Oh and I'll take 760.
The way things are going in the Wozniaki/Pervak match it looks like the deadline will be closer to 12pm UK time.
Thanks Manaus! Glad the comp is going ahead   What is taking these women so long?

Hope that's OK? The ladies match has just gone into a 3rd set ...

Yeah, that's fine. They're taking their time aren't they. ;)
I'm still accepting entries as the women's match isn't likely to finish until sometime after 1pm. (That match has gone on for nearly 3 hours )
Edit: Wozniaki match finally finished and Davydenko/Karlovic now on scoreboard. When the match starts no more entries will be accepted.
It's finally finished - the names are up now for the men's match.
There's some confusion amongst the stewards as they're heading out to relax on the beach when they see 18 drivers waiting at the Madrid track.
"Wasn't the race cancelled?" they whisper to themselves before the head steward arrives and berates the lot of them, telling them to stop lazing around and to get on with it.
The stewards set up for qualifying whilst grumbling away and clearly the drivers are much more comfortable on the clay this time round as they post much quicker times.
-J- and Lizzim manage to beat the competition and fill the first row, both hoping that they'll get their first points of the season.
eblunt and Elenive make up the second line with the latter aiming for a second podium finish in a row.
cazza99 and Linda start on the 3rd row and the rest of the scoring positions are filled by Sallydaisy, hfwardhouse, Ace! and VamosVixs.
Checks are all done and everyone is ready. I get the feeling that there'll definitely be some action in this race...
Well that didn't take long.
As the drivers accelerate off the starting line, -J- and Lizzim immediately step down hard on the accelerator and leave everyone else in the dust. The two appear to be having a drag race of some sort and Lizzim seems to have that extra bit of horsepower as she gradually pushes ahead.
All good fun though hopefully they'll slow down in time for that first (and rather sharp) turn...
If Mugro gets beat by Granny and Tsonga beats Harrison, I think I win by one point :)
(which is sure to prevent that happening )

Almagro won comfortably!
-J- and Lizzim better watch out - that turn is approaching very quickly. The 2 hit the brakes late and just barely manage to make it through, although the 2 briefly collide in the process.
http://www.hazelnet.org/icon/cars/ROADRAGE.GIF
Whilst the 2 attempt to pick up speed again (with both of them muttering that the other caused the collision), the drivers behind get a chance to catch up. Elenive in particular looks very confident, evidently comfortable in the dirt with the way he's zipping through every corner as if it were nothing and soon enough he leads the group closely followed by eblunt and cazza99 in third.
The race has only begun so more action to come!
(I'll set up the Rome BG tomorrow - note that you'll only have about 2 days to get your entries in as 1st round matches start on Sunday).

What will the gap be if Almagro beats Ferrer?
What will the gap be if Almagro beats Ferrer?
Exactly the same as it is now as he's the player in 8th place. The Simon/Tipsy match is the one to watch as if Simon wins the gap gets reduced by 10.
Players ranked in the bottom half of the top 20 can still make a difference to the gap but they would have to get to the final/win to change anything.

So unless Simon gets to the final or wins , then pretty much I have no chance of winning lol

I haven't done the maths but the best chance you have of winning is for Simon to win at least one match with him or Wawrinka being the finalist on the top half and Verdasco being the finalist on the other half.

Rome Bubble Gap is now open for entries. Apologies for the delay.
Delay? It's open already?

:rolling: Back to back Masters weeks are a busy time.
It starts on Sunday morning so you only have around 2 days to get your entries in.
Can anyone stop Elenive? He's making this look way too easy. eblunt is keeping on his tail but just can't quite catch him.
If this keeps up we may see a record being set...
Hopefully everyone's got the message now! At least no doubting your superb skill
Haha! Thanks James :swingin:

Don't worry, its my fault for picking a girl-sounding name. I guess the majority think elen stands for either helen or eleanor- In truth I just picked my name out from the numbers eleven and five!
-J- and Lizzim continue to struggle to keep their pace up - that collision must have damaged their engines and an increasing number of drivers overtake them.
Elenive continues his fast pace and it looks as if he's set to win this. He and eblunt go for a quick pit in for fuel and it's at this point that cazza99 and Linda step up to the plate to challenge them. Wherever they're finding their inspiration from it's working as Elenive and eblunt are taken by surprise as they leave the pits when they see the 2 of them right on their tails. It's a close match between the 4 but cazza99 drives the last few laps perfectly and takes pole position followed by Linda and Elenive.

Congratulations to cazza99, Linda and Elenive! Especially cazza99 for getting the exact bubble gap :cheer:. As far as I can remember I think that's the first time someone has got the exact bubble gap although maybe someone with a better memory can recall someone else doing it?
Overall leaderboard as always will be updated on the main BG thread by rondun. Rome BG is open for entries so remember to get your entry in if you haven't already.
Thanks Manaus. I looked at it earlier today (mainly because I was thinking of my Rome entry) and thought, Cazza's going to win with the exact score and I'll be second. Very well done Cazza!
A random thought - it's much easier to guess the bubble gap if Andy isn't playing, isn't it!

Certainly easier although I wonder if cazza just guessed a number or actually predicted that Tipsy would beat Djoko. If it's the latter that's rather impressive.

I did some sums but I definitely did not predict Tipsy would beat Djoko. I cannot remember what logic I used, but I think I assumed that someone below the line may get a few more points.
edit: I think I predicted Almagro to get 90 points getting to round 3 (as that is what I had in my bracket) and I used that, but I didn't know Tipsy would rise into top 8 and Isner would drop out.
