Britain's double gold medallist Rebecca Adlington, gets her London 2012 campaign underway this morning. The heats of the women's 400m Freestyle will be at 11:23 this morning, with the final at 20:18.
Can Becky defend the first of her two titles from Beijing 2008?

Becky's heat is up next, and also features Britain's Jo Jackson, who was the bronze medallist in Beijing.
Jennifer (was Seabreeze) is there for the heats this morning :)
Becky only just squeaked through in 8th place! I'm not sure I like timed qualification - she won her heat by over a length, but was still nearly knocked out. I guess you just need to swim flat out to make sure you qualify, but that doesn't do much for your chances in the next round...

One thing I love about the Olympics is the way you end up watching sports you would never normally bother with - currently watching the women's 3m synchronised diving, and really enjoying it :big grin:
Edit: British girls currently in 7th place, so not much chance of a medal here...

More British action in the Aquatics Centre today:
DIVING (14:55-16:25): Tom Daley and Pete Waterfield, men's synchronised 10m platform final.
Daley has been through a huge amount since making his Olympic debut in Beijing, winning a world title in 2009 before tragically losing his father to cancer in 2011. Now aged 18, he and Waterfield will harbour hopes of a medal in the synchronised final.
SWIMMING (19:43-19:46): Also in action are Britons Liam Tancock and Gemma Spofforth in the men's and women's 100m backstroke finals respectively. Tancock goes up against France's Camille Lacourt, while Spofforth faces Australia's Emily Seebohm and American Missy Franklin.

Still a great performance from Tom & Pete - just shows how a couple of little mistakes can make a world of difference - there are no margins for error at all in this event!
The guys were in the lead, actually ahead of the Chinese for a while, until an error on dive 4 and a smaller error in dive 5 pushed them down to fourth place.
The Mexican team deserved their silver medal for sheer guts - they purposely chose to attempt some ridiculously difficult dives, knowing that as long as they completed them reasonably well, the difficulty rating would compensate for any minor errors in execution - risky stuff, but well played
Tom Daley's diving partner, Pete Waterfield, speaking on BBC One: "On the fourth drive, I just kicked a bit high and couldn't stop it. In this competition you can't make mistakes and it left a lot to do. The last two dives were brilliant, but it was not enough. It was not our day, it was not meant to be, but the crowd were amazing. It would have been lovely to stand on the rostrum in front of them."
Tom Daley speaking to BBC One: "The crowd have been amazing, I'm getting emotional thinking about it. It was all we dreamed of and to come fourth was so agonising after training so hard. We've got the individual events to look forward to and hopefully we'll get back on our game.
It started really well and we got personal bests on the first two dives, and the third dive was really good, but the fourth was not good enough. You miss one dive and you are gone. Seventy one points in a competition like this, it is unheard of to finish fourth still. We needed just another nine points, which we normally can do, but it is the way sport goes. It's annoying but what can you do?"

Also enjoyed watching South African Chad le Clos winning gold ahead of the legend that is Michael Phelps in the 200m butterfly. Wreathed in smiles to start with, he was sobbing like a little girl during the anthem, then beaming again - lovely!
His Dad's a bit barmy though...!

SWIMMING (19:30 - 19:35): Michael Jamieson and Andrew Willis, men's 200m breaststroke final
The British pair qualified first and third from the semi-finals, raising hopes of a second swimming medal in the pool for the home nation, while Jemma Lowe has an outside chance in the women's 200m butterfly final.

I've really been enjoying the swimming. Would loave to have seen Michael Phelps win that 200m fly. He was so gracious in defeat too and showing young Chad the ropes. I was lamost in tears myself and neither of the are British!!
Have to confess I have actually prioritised other sports over tennis :shamed: I watch so much tennis year round, it has been nice to get excited about other sports. Plus the fact that I am at work during the day when most of the tennis is on. Will be watching come the weekend though .....

SWIMMING (20:37-20:38): Fran Halsall, women's 100m freestyle final
Fran Halsall is Britain's outstanding hope in the sprint final after coming through the semi-finals as the fifth-fastest qualifier. The rivalry between American greats Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will continue in the men's 200m individual medley final, with Briton James Goddard also involved. Earlier in the day, Rebecca Adlington starts the defence of her 800m freestyle title.

Cdn tv just showed a very moving backstory piece on Tom Daley. I didn't know he lost his Dad last year. How sad esp. as his Dad so wanted to see his son compete in 2012.. :crying:
KnightOwl
02-08-2012, 15:55
Yes, it is really sad - the story is pretty well known over here - Rob Daley used to travel to tournaments with Tom, and was often interviewd on TV - they were really close. If I recall correctly, Rob went into remission a couple of years or so ago, but then the cancer came back and he wasn't well enough to travel to (I think) the World Campionships where Tom won gold - I remember watching pictures of his Dad watching the competition from home, and them talking on the phone afterwards - all very emotional, and very sad when Rob lost his battle against cancer last May.

SWIMMING (19:45-19:56): Rebecca Adlington, women's 800m freestyle final
Having taken bronze in her less-favoured 400m event earlier in the week, 23-year-old Rebecca Adlington looks a strong bet to retain her other Olympic title over 800m in Friday's Aquatics Centre evening session. Adlington qualified fastest from Thursday's heats, although Denmark's Lotte Friis could push her all the way. Elsewhere, having surrendered his signature 200m butterfly Olympic title to South African Chad le Clos, Michael Phelps has the chance for revenge in the men's 100m butterfly.

Watching it on TV with a little over 100m to go, the CGI yellow line they use to show the current world record was already about a met behind his feet, and he kept going further away from it. He took almost 3 seconds off the previous record, in a tome of 14:31.02. Awesome!

OPEN WATER SWIMMING (12:00-14:30): Keri-Anne Payne, women's 10km marathon
Britain's Keri-Anne Payne will start as the event favourite, having claimed two World Championship titles since her open-water silver in Beijing, but the 22-year-old has had a difficult year. She has struggled with back and shoulder injuries as well as a kidney infection, although Hyde Park's Serpentine course should play to her strengths.

What a shame she came fourth really tried her hardest at the end to get a medal, i think they should all get one swimming 10km in open water!
It does feel like the effort required to win (or simply compete in) some events is massively greater than others, doesn't it.

DIVING (19:00-22:45): Tom Daley, Men's 10m Platform
After missing out on a medal in the synchronised event with partner Pete Waterfield, Tom Daley will get his campaign for individual success underway in the preliminary rounds of the 10m platform (19:00). The semi-finals and finals take place on Saturday.
Quote from BBC Sport Olympics Day 14 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19200494) page.
They interviewed Kerry-Anne Payne on Breakfast TV this morning. I have to say I had no idea how physical the open water swimming is. It seems that she was targeted yesterday - kicked in the head a couple of times, muscled off the feeding station and so on. Such is the price of being the favourite I suppose. Poor girl - as if it wasn't a difficult enough discipline!
JAMES4578
10-08-2012, 12:10
A bit shocked by that tbh but obviously the open water is really tough, such a pity Kerry didn't medal! Let's hope Tom does well in the individual, all the best to Pete too!
Tom and Pete have completed their first dives. They are in 18th and 27th respectively. Long way to go yet...
Tom needs to really nail his final dive to make sure he goes through to the semis tomorrow morning. Pete needs the best dive ever.

DIVING (10:00, 20:30): Tom Daley, Men's 10m Platform
Daley will have to improve considerably on his qualifying performance if he is to make it through the semi-finals (10:00) to Saturday evening's final. The 2009 world champion was in danger of an early exit on Friday but scraped through in 15th place out of 18 qualifiers. China's Qiu Bo and Lin Yue and defending Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham of Australia will be among those battling for medals.
Quote from BBC Sport Olympics Day 15 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19218216) page.
Tom looked uncharacteristically nervous yesterday, and it showed in his diving as he qualified 15th out of 18. Hopefully he has found a way to settle those nerves for this morning's semi-final, as only 12 go through from that to the final this evening.

Great dives from him, hope he gets a medal tonight!
He was only 10 points off third place in the semis so, if he's a tiny bit more consistent, he's got a great chance of getting a medal. If he dives as well as he did to win the Europeans (565), that'll be good enough for silver or possibly gold (the top diver in the semis scored 563). It's just a case of reproducing his best at the right time. How hard could it be...?

I think the two Chinese divers were expected to get gold & silver. One of them had a poor dive early on, so dropped down the rankings a bit, but for the other it all came down to the final dive, and I think he thought he'd done enough.
It just shows how much your expectations colour your reactions - I've seen loads of people celebrating bronze like it's the best thing ever, and several people sobbing over silver....

Yeah like when Japan beat Korea in the volleyball bronze medal match. And USA losing to Brazil in the gold medal.
Only slight difference being that Brazil were huge favourites to win in the eyes of all but the Americans.

Top stuff from Tom!!!
:bronze:
He really really deserved a medal and worked hard for it through so much personal pain last year.
Was a bit worried through the early stages but he produced the goods when he had too!
Standard was extremely high so he did very well to get the bronze!

Awww his Dad would have loved this, huh!
That was quality stuff from Tom. Interestingly, if the 75 points from his first dive had been counted, he would still have won bronze. The top three were miles ahead of the rest.
Awww, he looked so thrilled!

Nick Hope, BBC Sport at the aquatics centre
"Here in the press area we're being told that Tom Daley's post competition interviews will be delayed due to the fact David Beckham wants to meet him.
"After initial grumbles the assembled press accept they would make the same call in Tom's shoes!"

Well done Tom - fantastic result under so much pressure!

So thrilled from Tom, a superb performance in the circumstances! The standard was really high and he done really well coming up with the goods. Whilst the camera incident may not have technically affected the result of course if he hadn't been granted a redive may have felt more pressure.

Dreams can come true ............
What's even more amazing about this, is that 9 years ago we didn't even know the Games would be in London - this must have been fairly early in the bid process!
Heard about this a couple of times on radio/tv but fantastic to actually see the picture in question - thanks Sally!

Watching the Olympics Tonight programme - how brilliant is Kath Grainger!? Lovely, appreciative, well-informed and a fantastically dry sense of humour :)
Lighting up the screen, as far as I'm concerned :)

Well done to Tom so nerve wracking the final round to watch - his dives were great he couldnt of done much more really. And his reaction to winning was just so great to him its a gold such a shame his dad wasnt there to see it.
Michael Johnson was cracking up laughing at the montage of 'olympic pains'where people fell (and werent hurt) not seen him so animated the entire olympics!

Fabulous swin from Ellie Simmonds to take :gold: in the Women's 400m Freestyle S6 - what a star that girl is - smashing the world record, as did Victoria Arlen in silver medal position!

Congratulations to Ellie - a brilliantly judged race. She sure has true grit and determination and a wonderful personality. Very emotional with everyone in tears at her reaction to her victory. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Interesting report regarding the Australian swimming team on the BBC today (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-21501881). But a misleading headline IMHO because use of the word 'toxic' implies a drug issue and in a way the problem is just as sad.
