Just a reminder - the men's road race starts tomorrow at 10am

Saturday 28th July

The Men's Road Race starts at 10:00 at The Mall in London. The route will take the riders through six London boroughs, four Royal Parks and the Surry countryside, looping Box Hill nine times! Around 120km of road is available to watch the riders pass for free, although some areas are ticketed.

A detailed map of the route can be found on the London 2012 (http://www.london2012.com/cycling-road/event/men-road-race/coursemap) website for anyone who wants to go and find somewhere to watch!

Hoping Britain's Mark Cavendish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Cavendish) will be leading the way as the cyclists come back along The Mall at around 16:00 :big grin:

My brother is going to see this tomorrow, with his wife and three sons. They're off to France for a holiday, but they've gone a day early so they can see the cycling. We have relatives in Guildford, so they're staying there tonight, then up at the crack of dawn tomorrow to line the roads somewhere in Surrey, in the hopes of catching a glimpse of Mark Cavendish - my nephews think he's fantastic :)

Just hoping they get to see something, or my brother will have to face a very long drive with three disappointed little boys!

Some of the VB girls are going to Box Hill tomorrow. Wondering whether to go too. Have checked the trains (there will be nowhere to park) but still not feeling to good with this cold.

Gutted for Cav.

This is what he said after.

"We rode the exact race we wanted to ride. We wanted to control it and we wanted the group at a minute. We expected teams to come and chase at the end with us. We controlled it with four guys for 250 km and we couldn't do more. We are human beings.

"There was a group of 22 who got away and we couldn't pull them back. The four guys who ran all day couldn't do it. The Germans came a bit too late and the other teams seemed to be more content that they wouldn't win as long as we didn't win. That's kind of how it goes.

"I can be proud of how the lads rode today. I'm proud of my country as there was incredible support. The guys are sat there, they are spent. They have got nothing left in the tank. It's incredible to see that. To see what they gave for the cause."

rondun
28-07-2012, 15:42
They did, but so did everybody else - just you can't keep that up for 250km with 4 guys.
Sadly the other teams were happy to sit there and give up their chance at a medal as long as GB didn't win.
And for vino to win it...

JAMES4578
28-07-2012, 19:55
Gutting that GB just didn't make an impact here after the expectations. Have to say that that the tactics were questionable. It just hasn't gone to plan thus far all round.

KnightOwl
28-07-2012, 20:46
Really sorry the guys couldn't pull this off - it's a shame in a way that Cav was built up to be almost a shoe-in for gold - it almost makes this seem like a failure, but I don't think that would be a fair assessment.

I did really hope we would get our first :gold: today though

I watched the road race , and was disappointed too , the Canadian , Ryder Hesjedal ( who was pumped here to contend for a medal ) was way back :(

rondun
28-07-2012, 23:32
Pretty tough when you're basically racing against the peloton with 4 guys. (Well plus eisel)
Amazing effort from the guys, Brad could have jeopardised his own tt chances to try and pay cav back for Beijing. (although cancellara looks like he's done his collarbone)

And poor form by the French using the road race to shoehorn Bourgain into the keirin- smack in the face for the road and track teams

Sunday 29th July

The Women's Road Race is due to start at 12:00 today, at The Mall in London. The route is roughly the same as that for the men, except they only have to go around Box Hill twice - lightweights :big grin: Much of the route is available to watch the riders pass for free, although some areas are ticketed.

A detailed map of the route can be found on the London 2012 (http://www.london2012.com/cycling-road/event/women-road-race/coursemap) website for anyone who wants to go and find somewhere to watch!

Hoping Britain's Nicole Cooke can emulate her success in Beijing 2008, with the help of Emma Pooley, Lucy Martin & Lizzie Armitstead.

There is a breakaway group of 3 and only 12 km left to go and Lizzie Armitstead is one of the three.

KnightOwl
29-07-2012, 14:22
Excellent news! The media keep going on about Nicole Cooke, but to be honest, Lizzie has a pretty darn good chance herself - it's not quite the same as the men's race, where we only really had one truly recognised sprinter in the group.

CYCLING (14:15 - 16:05): Bradley Wiggins, men's individual time trial

Tour de France winner Wiggins will attempt to complete a glorious summer by adding Olympic gold in the time trial to the three he previously won in the velodrome. A medal of any sort will take him past Sir Steve Redgrave as the British Olympian with the most medals, a total of seven. Team-mate Chris Froome, the Tour de France runner-up, could be among his rivals for a medal.

Beijing silver medallist Emma Pooley has the pedigree in the women's race but believes the flat course at Hampton Court harms her chances, while Lizzie Armitstead has the boost of silver in the road race as she looks to go one better.

Question: what is the cycle race going on at the mo with the women? Why are they leaving one minute at a time? (Sorry, I don't usually follow cycling so not sure about the races.)

It's the time trial. So not strictly a race. Whoever completes the course in the fastest time wins. So it's all about pacing themselves over the course.

TRACK CYCLING (16:00-18:21): Victoria Pendleton and Sir Chris Hoy, team sprint

Pendleton and Hoy became household names after their performances in Beijing and will be among the favourites in their respective team sprints as the track cycling competition begins at London 2012.

Jess Varnish will partner Pendleton as the women's event makes its Olympic debut, with Germans Kristina Vogel and Miriam Welte and Australians Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch the serious challengers.

Hoy teams up with 19-year-old German-born Philip Hindes and Jason Kenny, who has been picked ahead of the Scot for the individual sprint. Australia, Germany and France will be among the leading threats.

Fabulous ride from Chris Hoy, sorry, Sir Chris Hoy in the Men's Team Sprint - behind against Germany at the first two splits, until Sir Chris went round the final lap like a rocket!

Team GB qualify fastest from the Qualfying round, setting a new Olympic Record (43.065) in the process. This was all after a fairly dramatic start - Philip Hindes came off his bike at the beginning of the first ride, so we were granted a restart!

KnightOwl
02-08-2012, 16:04
Confusion reigns in the Velodrome!

There seems to be an issue about a possible invalid changeover between the British Girls, which may result in disqualification - however a graphic just came up showing Germany v Australia competing for gold, which implies the Chinese team may also have been disqualified - but no-one seems to know!

We were expecting to see Great Britain v China in the gold/silver race, and Germany v Australia competing for bronze

KnightOwl
02-08-2012, 16:19
Confirmation that Vicky Pendleton & Jess Varnish have been disqualified from the Team Sprint - their timing was a little off, and as a result they changed over a fraction early, and therefore not in the correct zone on the track.

No news yet on what, if anything, happened to the Chinese riders, and what happens about bronze...

Bad luck, girls

Edit: very brave & gracious interview from Vicky on BBC - well done...

It has just been announced that China & Germany will battle it out for gold in the Women's team sprint, while Australia will take on Ukraine for the bronze - with Ukraine having been promoted as they lost to Great Britain in the previous round.

It's totally bizarre! It does seem rather harsh, though, that the Chinese pair made a pretty similar error to the British pair, but they've only been relegated down to silver, and we've gone all the way to 7th! As we won our semi-final, I don't quite follow why we're not fifth

KnightOwl

Possibly - I admit I lost track a bit! I thought we beat Ukraine in the previous round (heats?) then raced again (presumably against Germany) to determine who went for the gold/silver race and who for the bronze "playoff". I guess alternatively they may have had four "semis" as you suggest, and used the times of the four winners to decide who fought for gold and who for bronze.

It's all a bit confusing tbh :big grin:

TRACK CYCLING (16:00-18:48): Victoria Pendleton, women's keirin; GB men's team pursuit

Victoria Pendleton will try to put behind her the disappointment of being disqualified from Thursday's team sprint when she goes in the keirin - where riders are paced behind a motorised bike and then let loose for a final, chaotic race to the finish. Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Geraint Thomas and Peter Kennaugh go head-to-head with Australia as GB defend their Olympic men's team pursuit title. Expect world records to fall.

The British trio of Laura Trott, Dani King and Joanna Rowsell smashed the world record as they won the world title in Melbourne earlier this year and they qualified for Saturday's Olympic final by setting another world best. Trott also has the six-discipline, two-day omnium to go for later in the event and could become one of the stars of the Games. Jason Kenny begins his individual sprint campaign earlier in the day.

Clancy will start the second and final day of the multi-discipline omnium in fourth place after winning the flying lap, finishing 11th in the points race and fifth in the elimination race on Saturday. With his stronger events to come in the individual pursuit (10:00), scratch race (17:01) and time trial (18:16), a medal is a real possibility.

TRACK CYCLING (17:43): Jason Kenny, men's individual sprint

Jason Kenny faces the daunting challenge of filling Sir Chris Hoy's shoes after being selected ahead of the reigning Olympic champion for Britain's sole individual sprint place. France's Gregory Bauge, the world champion, was always likely to provide a tough a opponent whoever was selected, but Kenny will be optimistic of improving on his silver from Beijing.

Kenny must first get past Njisane Nicholas Phillip from Trinidad & Tobago in the semi-final (16:00). Victoria Pendleton continues her individual sprint campaign, facing Belarusian Olga Panarina in the quarter-finals (16:43).

TRACK CYCLING (16:00-18:30): Sir Chris Hoy, men's keirin; Victoria Pendleton, women's individual sprint

The final night of action at the velodrome could be an emotional affair as it will be the last time track cycling's biggest stars, Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton, compete together for Great Britain. Hoy will attempt to win the sixth gold medal of his stellar career in the keirin (heats - 10:00; final - 17:57), while Pendleton goes for a third gold in the individual sprint (semis - 16:00; final - 17:26) before retiring. German Kristina Vogel, China's Guo Shuang and perennial rival Anna Meares of Australia stand in her way.

Quote from BBC Sport Olympics Day 11 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19155527) page.

Also up today is Britain's Laura Trott in the concluding day on the Women's Omnium. Laura is currently leading the event, but with the same number of points as American Sarah Hammer, and there are three more athletes within 6 points of them, so it's going to be an exciting finish!

Fantastic ride from Chris Hoy, sailing over the line in first place to qualify for the keirin final

Earlier, Vicky Pendleton went safely through to the final of the individual sprint, where she will face Anna Meares of Australia. This will be best-of-three, with the first race at around 17:26.

Laura Trott is currently lying in second place of the omnion, two points behind American Sarah Hammer. Just one more event to go, which will be the 2-lap time trail - this is scheduled to take place around 16:53, but may be a few minutes late due to a restart required in one of the keirin heats earlier on.

Absolutely wonderful interview of Sir Chris after the keirin, by Jill Douglas and a special guest star...just had to post this in case anyone missed it...

JD: Your sixth gold medal, and I've got a man here who wants to know what it's like to pick up six
<slight confusion on Chris's face, then realisation as Sir Steve Redgrave steps forward to give him a big hug>
CH: Steve!!
SR: Aaah, absolutely amazing! So is that it, are you going to race at the Olympics again? I wanna know!
CH: That's me done!
SR: I'm coming back! I'm making a comeback! That's official.
JD: Very special indeed. Wonderful to see you here celebrating. Let me see, six and five, eleven gold medals between you.
CH: Steve's an inspiration. I used to be a rower many years ago as a schoolboy, really looked up to Matthew and to Steve, all the rowers, and then to even be mentioned in the same sentence as this guy is an honour to me, and to me he'll alway be the greatest, no matter how many medals anybody wins, he's an inspiration and he won five consecutive gold medals and that's different to winning multiple golds so, yeah to be here, and to have Steve congratulate me is just an incredible feeling. Thank-you Steve!

Then there was the rest of the interview of Chris - which was brilliant in itself if a little too long to transcribe - but with Sir Steve's fatherly arm round his shoulders the whole time, and Steve glancing proudly down at him - and another big hug at the end - utterly fantastic!

For anyone who hasn't seen it, I urge you to check it out on BBC Sport or You Tube - it really doesn't come across properly in a transcript!

Also a nice moment when Sir Steve came over to give him a hug! :)

I also liked the fact that when they cut back to the studio, Jake Humphries said how wonderful it was that Steve was be here for this, and said that he had absolutely insisted that he wanted to be in the velodrome for that very moment.

Steve has shown how caring and humble he is, after the way he has looked after all the rowers at these Olympics, and he showed it again here - he looked nothing but proud of what Chris had achieved, and Chris himself just looked delighted to see him. If you didn't well up at the medal ceremony, you will when you see this :)
