Great Britain's Phillips Idowu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillips_Idowu) has beaten the current world triple-jump champion, Christian Taylor of the USA, in torrential conditions at the Diamond League meeting in Shanghai earlier today.

Bodes well for London 2012 I'd say....!

in other news Lawrence Okoye has broken the uk discus record

-J-
27-05-2012, 15:40
the build up is becoming very interesting, GB athletes are breaking BPS on a daily basis and there are quite a few names coming from nowhere like Ross Murray who today ran a very impressive 3:34 for the 1500m

KnightOwl
27-05-2012, 21:31
Yes, I noticed that one too - I guess having the Olymics coming up is giving athletes a lot of motivation, and a home Olympics even more so, but I'm already getting quite excited about this - there are some fantastic results coming through and although I don't want to count my gold medals before they've hatched (as it were!) it's all looking fairly promising - just hope they can all keep the momentum going :)

I was just reading about this. His time of 10.08 makes him the second fastest European this year, behind Lemaitre. Incredible.

Incredible.ye the BBC now have an article here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/athletics/18309111), say he is the 2nd fastest uk junior ever tho should be actually third as the poor idiot MLF missed out on the junior WR when the canucks messed up the wind reading

Yeah, I remember that - bit like the incident a few weeks ago with Jess where they put the wrong number of hurdles on the track!

My friends daughter has just qualified for the US team in the Hammer throw. I'm so excited for her, she was an outsider that came through in the end and she was happy when she got to the qualifiers. Sorry fellow Brits but I will have to cheer for her. :yahoo::olympics:

The GB team will miss out on the 4x100m relay at London 2012 after their team were disqualified from the European Championships in Helsinki yesterday. On the third leg of the semi-final, Hayley Jones unfortunately ran out of her lane, so the team failed to qualify. This drops them to 17th place in the world rankings, so as the Olympic event is top-16 only, they will be unable to compete.

I feel so sorry for Hayley - she must be absolutely devastated to have been unwittingly the cause of the whole relay team missing the Olympics.

KnightOwl
01-07-2012, 12:01
Absolutely - relay teams usually seem very close-knit, so I'm sure everyone else will be supporting her rather than blaming her - but she'll probably feel awful about it anyway

12.54?!!!

OMG What a run from Jess Ennis, setting a new World Best for 100m hurdles in heptathlon. Fantastic!

According to Colin Jackson that would easily get her into the final of the individual event, and is actually a British record for 100m hurdles overall!

Mo Farah then goes for the first of a possible two medals in the 10,000m (21:15), and the fastest women on earth line up in the 100m final (21:55). Earlier in the day, Usain Bolt (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/2012/athletes/82f5db84-0591-49ee-b6f4-a1d26e9381fb) and his fellow sprint stars take part in the men's 100m first round (12:30 to 13:20). KnightOwl
04-08-2012, 18:04
Ooh, that was a tough one - I thought his legs looked a bit leaden towards the end. D'you know who goes through, Hawk?

I assume it can't be first four from each semi, otherwise the commentators wouldn't be worried - I guess it must be first three from each and two fastest losers?

Edit: No, commies have just said there are three semi finals - hadn't realised that - gulp!!

Hawkeye
04-08-2012, 18:05
First 2 only + 2 fastest losers I think.

KnightOwl
04-08-2012, 18:09
Ouch. That could be tricky. His was a fast race, but I'm not sure his time would be fast enough - edge of the seat stuff!

He's already only the second fastest loser, as the guy who was third must be fastest loser, so we need no-one bar the first two in the remaining semis to faster than Dai - I'm not convinced....

KnightOwl
04-08-2012, 18:12
Disappointing for Jack Green too - got his stride pattern a bit mixed up, so clatters into one of the hurdles, and seemed to pull something - groin maybe...

Edit: on the upside, the third-placed athlete was slower than Dai, so he's still in with a chance...

-J-
04-08-2012, 18:13
other green had a shocker too

Phil Jones, who does most of the trackside interviews, really winds me up. He's a complete....word I'm not allowed to use here...

He asks the most inane questions, and how dare he ask a clearly angry and disappointed athlete about what he thinks of how someone else performed :grrr:

KnightOwl
04-08-2012, 18:20
:phew: Well, Dai is through, but won't get a great lane draw - at least he has a chance to compete, and hopefully he'll have time to recover and get over whatever was causing him a problem this evening.

Jess Ennis has confirmed that she won't be entering the Women's 100m Hurdles.

Britain's newly crowned Olympic champion Jessica Ennis says she will not run in the 100m hurdles following her triumph in the heptathlon.

The 26-year-old considered competing in the event which starts on Monday after running a personal best time of 12.54 seconds in the two-day competition.

"I did think about it, especially when I ran a personal best," she said. "But for me it was just about the heptathlon. I'm more than happy with that and I just need to rest now."

There's a really good route map of the Marathon (http://www.london2012.com/documents/general/london-2012-marathon-route-map.pdf) - interesting that for once it's not actually finishing in the Olympic Stadium - I guess that's because there are no other events there til this evening, so there probably wouldn't be much atmosphere just for the end on one race.

It's a different route to the London Marathon - and not just a single circuit, they actually go three times round the course, which must be brilliant for the spectators!
