So sad not to see Rafa's name up there.

Even so, that is a pretty strong line-up for a 250.
Would love so much to see Andy do it for a third time. I still cant forgive Mardy Fish for 2 years ago :grrr:

Linda

It is an amazingly strong lineup for a 250, even without Rafa (who I shall miss terribly! :crying:). Compare it to Eastbourne, where the top seed is ranked I think 18.

Good to see Flemchins back in action. Not so sure Mardy Fish will be here tho', he's just had surgery.
It's possible the 2 Brit pairs of Delgy/Skupski and Inglot/Marray might get Wildcards into the event.

Nottingham starts this Saturday!

Well, the qualifying event is on but there's a steady stream of players headed there from the devil dirt ready for main draw play starting from Monday onwards.

If you live anywhere near it is worth a trip because it is FREE to watch, plenty of space around the courts and you'll see the likes of Bally, AnneK, Hev, Laura Watson, James Ward, Jamie Baker and many others!

Madeline

I wonder if the fact that he and Jamie are down for the doubles will sway Andy into deciding definitely to play here? He needs to put the demands of his body first, though.

Perhaps, as someone posted earlier, he will play but bow out half way through the week.

I am sure it will still be good weather permitting! There are always a few withdrawals with it being straight after the French. I am wondering if Fed and Rafa will both make Halle, I remember Fed withdrawing last year with some mystery ailment!

Linda
09-06-2012, 17:00
I don't think Andy's quarter is tough at all. True he's had trouble with GGL in the past, but the following round should be fine and in the quarters it's either Anderson or Lopez - both big servers, which he has always been able to handle. Andy must be the overwhelming favourite to win the tournament, with Tsonga second favourite.

Madeline
09-06-2012, 18:48
I think Tsonga has an easier draw. I can't see anybody in his half who should give him any trouble on grass.

He's got Mahut, Muller, Anderson and Lopez. They're not the toughest players to play in the world but they all present problems as they're all good on grass.

10-06-2012, 12:06
Generally I think Andy has a pretty good draw - all the big guns seem to be in the other half. The only problem is Mahut who has been playing extremely well - Andy can usually handle Floppy.

But then I hate saying that - I much prefer to see Andy with an early challenge - maybe Nic Mahut will supply that - he's pretty solid on grass

hmm the forecast doesn't look great for today.
Tomorrrow looks a bit better - as long as it stays that way I'm thinking of going to get a ground pass.

It wasn't this morning according to the radio on my way to work.

It's ok here in Birmingham so the ladies might get to play today. Might try and go down after work if I finish at a reasonable time and there is still play going on.

I'm so glad I didn't go for Queens tickets this year. I learned my lesson in 2010 when I bought tickets for Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. On Friday I saw Andy and Rafa lose. On the Saturday, the only player left in that the average punter would have heard of was Floppy. He lost. Even he hasn't made it through this year.

I think this year is the death knell for Queens being anything more than a 250.

I agree. It used to be a top notch tournament with a good number of the top 10 playing .... but not any more. Lots go to Halle now cos they are guaranteed grass court play. Shame.

Queens won't be able to justify the prices they charge for much longer. I've only been once, in the 90's and it was a different tournament then. Wouldn't consider going now - similar prices to Wimby, 3 sets instead of 5 .... no contest!!

EDIT: Not been able to watch any of it this year so far and just found out Tsonga lost and may be a doubt for Wimby. :crying::crying::crying: Really bad news if it's right ... he's my favourite player behind Andy and Rafa

Whilst not an accident the kick was not aimed at the linejudge personally but was deliberately aimed at the surround to his seat (i.e. an inanimate object) because David was so cross with himself at missing a shot. The kick was made with intent - no doubt - and was hard enough to cause the surround to collapse and for the wood to hit the guy on the leg and cause him to roll of his chair in pain.

It was a mistake by Nalbandian to behave like that and created more problem than he might have expected.

Like it or not the ATP rule is clear and Queens are obliged to follow it whether or not they want to.

At least both players have had chance to speak and the crowd are applauding Cilic.

Lizzim
17-06-2012, 15:06

super8
17-06-2012, 15:20
The basic fact is that, irrespective of outcome, if he were to aim a kick anywhere, it should not have been so near anyone else.

What next? Blaming the wood for not being strong enough? It was an almighty kick.

And the fact is that if he hadn't aimed that kick, they'd still be playing now.

As far as I am concerned, the rules have to protect the officials at a match, from umpire to ballboys and girls. So the rule with this was bang on.

WimbledonAce

I don't think so. Pain sensors can take a few seconds to kick in, and if you're hurt you don't always quite know what to do with yourself to make it better. I think his reaction was quite understandable.

Never seen anything like this bar the Henman incident. Dave should have just smashed his raquet on the ground. Or did what Nole did at the French. Poor Sue, trying to interview him then the supervisor, both were hard work.

Thought the linesman fell off chair after a bit of thought. He rolled off. All right his leg was bleeding and it must have hurt. But why roll off chair. Cameras? Milking it? Men and injuries??????????

If virginia wade had been there-would she have called the linesman a "drama queen"?:red devil:

Like it or not the ATP rule is clear and Queens are obliged to follow it whether or not they want to.

And, as super8 says above, there is nothing wrong with that rule. If a player takes a deliberate action, in anger or frustration or whatever, and that act is the direct cause of injury to opponent, official or spectator, even if such injury wasn't the intent, then I think there is no question the player must be defaulted.

I was disappointed in Nalbandian's reaction today. I thought more of him than that.

Unbelievable end to the match! Terrible mistake from Nalbandian kicking the board so close to the line judge. Feel sorry for Cilic - he had every chance to get back into the match. It's been a disaster of a tournament all round really!

:rolling: What a joke... He didn't mean to intentionally hurt the line judge. Didn't know he was there. No need to default this, just get on with it seriously. Robbing the fans of the ticket price they paid if they default this.

What Henman did was worse.

I can't agree with that. The Henman incident was more of an accident - he hit a ball in anger, but he hadn't seen the ball girl running in, and it was sheer chance that the ball hit her. In today's incident, what did Nalby think would happen - the line judge was right in front of him - there is no way he could have kicked that box without hitting the man.

I'm not saying he intended to hurt the line judge, but what he did was way more likely to cause injury than what Henman did. Plus there is no comparison as to the reaction afterwards - Tim accepted what had happened, apologised, and gave the girl some flowers and a kiss iirc. He certainly didn't launch an inappropriate attack on the ATP!

I dont think Nalby thought the box would crumble like that, i think he just kicked out at it. I have no quibble with the dq though. Sure he will be more apologetic later when he thinks about it.

I don't think so. Pain sensors can take a few seconds to kick in, and if you're hurt you don't always quite know what to do with yourself to make it better. I think his reaction was quite understandable.

The poor guy looked shocked....he didn't seem to know what had happened at first....and then I guess the pain hit him and he realised how much it hurt....just my view :)

Who? Nalbandian? No, I don't think that would be the right word. I don't think he was being melodramatic, just angry and thoughtlesss. But I was disappointed that he seemed to show very little concern about the fact that he had accidentally hurt someone, and seemed more bothered that the ATP had defaulted him as a result of his 'mistake'.

What Nalby did was really no worse than Djoko did at the French - the difference being that in Djoko's case no-one was hurt of course. I think Nalby will be doubly embarrassed when he sees the replay of his interview - perhaps it would have been better not to interview him at all.

What an odd day though - Fed beaten by the player were all loving to hate at the moment and Nalby losing his cool and the match - you couldn't write the script!

No, I'm sure he didn't expect that and I'm not suggesting intent in anyway - just that it was a risky thing to do with someone sitting right there. I know it was spur of the moment, and he wasn't thinking - I'm not bothered about that, but I thought his statement in the interview with Sue afterwards was appalling.

I hope you're right and he'll feel sorry about it later....

Hope the line judge is OK - that was a very nasty gash on his leg.
Poor bloke, doing his job, sun out, Final at Queens and now he's probably headed to hospital for stitches.

I think Nalby missed an opportunity, in that oncourt interview, to make, a full apology to the guy who was injured. He fell on the floor because in the action of clutching his leg the chair toppled over - nothing he could do about that and he was clearly in some pain.

To suggest he was 'milking it' and 'worrying about his cream trousers' seems rather thoughtless and unfair.

I think Nalbadian was very insulting to the crowd and to the general Tennis viewing public, and as for his reply to SB unbelievable, tennis players earn a hell of a lot of money, DN needs to get a grip with real life, we all loose our cool at times BUT this was beyond belief, hope I never have to watch him play again

I just see video of it. Good that he defaulted cos that kick on purpose for boards even he don't mean kick man. Poor linesman! I don't think I seen tennis player hurt anyone near on purpose before.

I only see complete total accidents that linesman, ballboys/girls, umpire get injured in past.

I agree, Jeannie - it really has been a 'wash out' in more ways than one. I'm sure the organisers will remember it as the one they want to forget.

Interesting that, according to the commies, the crowd members who were most vociferous about the premature end of the match were those in the Clubhouse who didn't see what happened because they hadn't been watching the tennis - says it all really!

The BBC commmentators thought he would be. He could be fined anything up to his entire Queen's winnings - saying that, I got this from a Daily Mail article, so it could well be a load of old rubbish.

Edit: The BBC agrees. Apparently it's ATP rule 8.04.

This made me literally laugh out loud! Yeah I didnt get why bouncy felt personally insulted, lol. He was loving the drama.

I think we must keep this in context though. What Nalbandian did was a mistake, players hit out like that all the time, it was just unfortunate that the line judge got caught up in it. Really felt for the guy dabbing at his leg with a tissue, bless him. Hope hes ok.

Nalbandian could have come out ok had he a, apologised to the poor line judge then b, to everyone else. The atp tirade was a huge error of judgement, v poor timing. You would expect better from someone with his experience.

The tournament hitting the headlines, even if not for the right reasons! Nalby certainly lost it and it seems that according to the rulebook and the injury was quite serious, though I'm sure the injury to the linesman was unintentional. Some sections of the crowd though were most annoyed at the match ending in this manner.

This is the Tim Henman incident from Wimbledon 1995.

Doesn't actually show Tim hitting the ball but does show the aftermath.
