Jannik Sinner has just beaten Novak Djokovic to take the ATP1000 title in Shanghai and ensure he ends the year as #1.
A good win for Sinner and his 7th title this season, Djokovic played well in the first but Jannik stronger in the Breaker and Novak was not really the same force afterwards.
and the latest farcical announcement from the world of Grand Slams - the mixed event at the US Open will be held prior to the start of the main event, limited to 16 teams, reduced to needing only 4 games to win a set with no-ad scoring at deuce, and 3rd set being a 10 point MTB. While they are at it, they could perhaps wear fancy dress, and at my club we have those doubles events where after two games you change partner and play with one of the players you played against. Finally, they have a panel of judges who rate the players according to artistic ability, and the two lowest teams have to play each other in a playoff to remain in the competition.
Surely they could do the pretournament mixed doubles as an exhibition event and still keep the proper one later. It is crackers.
Diego Schwarzman has retired.
Gael Monfils has announced he'll be retiring at the end of next year's season.
Well, I got the 2 finalists right for the women in Shanghai (Coco and Pegula) but the male finalists badly wrong! Thought the youngsters might be overcome by nerves but their determination to play their best was rewarded. Well done to the two cousins - what an achievement! x
Certainly a number of upsets in Shanghai (the men's event) ,not as many even if a few upsets for the women in Wuhan (Coco taking it). At times very challenging conditions, Sinner had to retire and Alcaraz pulled out at the last minute. At one point looked like it might favour Djokovic but he had some fitness issues. Nonetheless amazing tennis from qualifier Vacherot (who was not even in the qualies draw until a few pulled out) and has won the title over his cousin Rinderknech 4-6,6-3,6-3. An amazing story and a fairytale ending ! Arthur though was ailing a bit and obviously disappointed to miss the chance. Still had some big wins over Zverev and Medvedev ,Valentin had success over Bublik,Rune and Djokovic.
