BBC - Andy Murray named in Great Britain's Davis Cup team
htt ps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/66498813
Andy Murray has returned to Great Britain's Davis Cup team for the fixtures against Australia, France and Switzerland in Manchester next month.
The three-time Grand Slam champion was left out of the squad for the 3-1 win against Colombia in February.
Murray, 36, was integral to Britain's 2015 victory - their first Davis Cup win in 79 years.
The top two nations in Group B in Manchester qualify for November's finals in Malaga.
All of GB's ties will be broadcast on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.
Neal Skupski, Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans have also been selected for the 10-time champions who were eliminated in the group stages of last year's Finals.
"It's been a long time since we played in the North West and I'm sure we are going to feel and hear a lot of energy from the fans," GB captain Leon Smith said.
"We have a great team with a lot of Davis Cup experience who will be ready to give it everything in a tough group."
Analysis
Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent
With Evans and Murray in the team, captain Smith has calculated he is only likely to require the services of one specialist doubles player.
As the Wimbledon champion and world number one, Skupski fits the bill perfectly, and was a finalist at both the Miami and Monte Carlo Masters with Evans in 2021.
The team could still evolve over the month ahead, as Smith can make up to three changes until 24 hours before the start.
Performances at the US Open will be a factor, and the progress of Jack Draper will be closely watched. The 21-year-old, who has not played since the French Open, makes his comeback from a shoulder injury at the Winnipeg Challenger this week.

US Open 2023: Andy Murray 'playing best’ since hip operation
BBC - ht tps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/66666807
..
"I'm at my highest ranking (37) since I had my metal hip put in," Murray said.
"I'm happy with that. It's not been an easy journey. I would like to be ranked higher but this is the best I've played consistently since 2017."
..
"I've played quite a lot of matches against ex-coaches - I think I've only lost once," said the three-time major champion, who won his maiden Grand Slam title in New York in 2012.
"I mean, it probably should be a big advantage for him to have two guys that have worked with me over the years. But we'll find out."

Re: Newspaper and internet reports temporary thread
BBC - ht tps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/67166854 Interesting article
Emma Raducanu: British star says 'provoking' questions have contributed to turnover of coaches
......
"I ask my coaches a lot of questions," she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
"On certain occasions they haven't been able to keep up with the questions I've asked and maybe that's why it ended."
......
"I will be coming back with probably a lower ranking, but I'm actually looking forward to starting again, kind of resetting," she told Karthi Gnanasegaram.
"I still have new goals, new things I want to achieve. But I've still got like 15 years left in my career, so there's no rush."
Raducanu also has an ambition to represent Great Britain at the Olympics, although Paris 2024 might come too soon.
"Obviously, the Olympics is such a big thing in sport," she said.
"I think I could play another four if I really wanted to, so this one isn't the immediate rush or pressure, it's just about getting back on court.
"I love the Slams but I do want to have the Olympic experience. I'll just see how it goes, if I even qualify and how it goes from there."
.........
"Overall, I'm a lot better, I just feel like it's part of my day now and part of my life. It's not just tennis and fitness, it's the other commercial side as well and that's totally ok," added Raducanu.
"You have to think ahead about your life after your career is over and I think a lot of successful athletes would have said 'I wish maybe when I was younger I did think ahead a bit'.
"I think I have a lot of bandwidth, knowledge, learning and time, so I'm just curious about everything and every different world I can get into. But at the end of the day, tennis and training is my priority."

"Speaking to Eurosport, Henman was asked if 2024 could be Murray?s last as a competitive player.

Re: Newspaper and internet reports thread 2
Interesting article on Andy in today's Guardian. I do not think. I can link to it as the site crashed here when I did but guardian.co.uk Sport Tennis and the article on Andy is there. In a rather revealing quote he states " last year I felt like, because I was not serving well, when it came serving for matches I was not getting many free points, ending up in long rallies. Just not feeling comfortable on the court."

Thank you cazza.

-
Re: Newspaper and internet reports thread 2
Thanks David.
Here are some comments from the article
“I feel like I'm enjoying [tennis] better,” Murray said in his pre-tournament press conference on Friday. “I think part of that is the mental side of it. Tennis is a difficult game in that respect. When you're struggling, you're out there on your own, it can be difficult at times. Part of it is that.
“The way you're playing, when you know you're capable of doing more than what you are, if you're not happy with the way you're hitting forehands and backhands and serving and those sorts of things, there's the technical aspect as well. Fixing some of those problems has helped me feel better on the court. Definitely some focus on the mental side, reframing the way you look at things helps.”
..
The 46-time tour-level titlist starts this year’s Australian Open campaign against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, with Novak Djokovic a potential third-round opponent. Murray played the Argentine twice last season, with both matches tight three-setters. Split at 1-1 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series, the three-time major winner is expecting another physical battle.
“I made most of my matches quite physical last year,” Murray said cracking a smile. “I don't know if that was necessarily him. He has a game that can make the matches that way. We played in Basel, I don't know if it was over three hours, but it felt like it was. In Indian Wells, another long one.
“I know that last year when I wasn't serving well, you end up getting into lots more long rallies and everything. Because of the way I return, I put quite a lot of returns back in play, you can end up getting into lots of long points when that's the case. Matches will go on. Hopefully that's not the case in a couple of days.”

Re: Newspaper and internet reports thread 2
Whilst this is primarily about Andy ...
... really sorry to read on Twitter just now that Mike Dickson, Tennis/Sports journalist for the
Daily Mail has passed away suddenly whilst out in Melbourne covering the Australian Open.
Twitter account link - it's being used by his family to post what happened.
ht tps://twitter.com/Mike_Dickson_DM
His last 'own' post was to congratulate Emma Raducanu on her return to tennis.
This is from Stu Fraser: "An extremely sad day in Melbourne.
Those of us here are in complete shock. Mike was a tremendous colleague and friend on the road.
The tennis press room will never quite be the same again."

Re: Newspaper and internet reports thread 2
A lovely report in the Mail showing how much Dickson meant to the tennis world - some lovely photos of him and Andy.
Always worth re reading his report of Andy’s first Wimbledon Win - I thought Andy would have said something on social media but maybe he’s done it privately to the family.

BBC - Andy Murray wants to play in Olympic Games before retirement
ht tps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/68421921
"Britain's Andy Murray says he is not planning to "play much past this summer" but hopes to compete at another Olympic Games before he retires.
The future of the three-time Grand Slam champion, who turns 37 in May, has come under increased scrutiny after he has struggled for wins in recent months.
Murray lost to France's Ugo Humbert in the Dubai second round on Wednesday.
Before the 6-2 6-4 defeat, the Scot said he hoped to play at the Paris Olympics in the summer.
Afterwards, when asked again about his retirement plans, the former world number one gave his most definite answer yet.
"I get asked about it after every single match that I play, every single tournament that I play," added Murray.
"I'm bored of the question, to be honest. I'm not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop.
"But I don't plan on playing much past this summer."
Wimbledon, which runs from 1-14 July, marks the end of the British grass-court summer and the Olympics start in Paris on 24 July.
The US Open is the final Grand Slam tournament of the season and starts on 26 August in New York."
