"Great Britain's Sonay Kartal beat Japan's Mai Hontama in straight sets at the Jasmin Open in Tunisia to reach the first WTA quarter-final of her career.

Kartal, who is the British number four, cruised out of the last 16 with a dominant 6-2 6-2 success.

The 22-year-old from Brighton is ranked 46 places below Hontama at 151 in the world.

She took a 3-0 lead in both sets and closed each out despite her opponent pulling games back.

Beating Hontama means she will play either number third seed Diane Parri or world number 130 Yuliia Starodubtseva in the last eight on Thursday.

Kartal, who was Emma Raducanu's main domestic rival as a junior, reached the third round at Wimbledon earlier this year before falling to second seed Coco Gauff."

Well done to Sonay Kartel - into the semifinals in Tunisia against Eva Lys. Estimated 6.30 tonight.

Sonay now into the final. She was 5-1 in first set of the semi when her opponent retired.

Sonay now 6-3 1-0 up (with a break) in the final.

Sonay is in to the last 32 at Indian Wells after a victory over Beatriz Haddad Maia. Not bad for a Lucky Loser!

Sonay will be in the top 70 after reaching the last 32.

She will play Sabalenka or Bronzetti next.

Fantastic win for Sonay taking her into the last 16.

Sonay lost 6-1 6-2 to Sabalenka.

Sonay broke Sabalenka in the first game and many of the games were not as one sided as the final score would suggest.

certainly a good run from Sonjay, a tough ask against Sabalenka though even if there were long games.

Very good experience for Sonay though. She will have learnt from this.
