    Jonny Marray

    Jonny Marray

From the ATP website - his bio information

    • Age: 31 (10.03.1981)
    • Birthplace: Liverpool, England
    • Residence: London, England
    • Height: 6'2" (188 cm)
    • Weight: 168 lbs (76 kg)
    • Plays: Right-handed
    • Turned Pro: 2000
    • Coach: Louis Cayer

Born in Liverpool…Resides in London…As a wild card, recorded his first two tour-level singles wins to reach third round of the 2004 Queen's Club, falling to Hewitt in two tie-breaks…

By playing at the 2012 Australian Open, Marray competed in all four Grand Slam doubles events, having made his first appearance at Wimbledon in 2002, Roland Garros in 2010 and the US Open in 2011...

With Frederik Nielsen became the first wild card team to clinch the Wimbledon doubles title in 2012.
In fact, this is Jonny's ONLY title - one heck of a one to win!!!

"Marray ends 52-year wait and celebrates with tea"
As droughts go this one had lasted only the 52 years. Jonny Marray yesterday became the first Briton to make the men's double final since 1960 after he and his Danish partner, Freddie Nielsen, stunned the defending champions Mike and Bob Bryan.
The last Britons in the final were Bobby Wilson and Mike Davies while the last British success came in 1936, the same year Fred Perry won his last singles title.
"Marray, described as the last serve-and-volleyer left in tennis by his partner, spent his £75 winner's gift voucher on a tea set. "He likes tea," said Nielsen."

A few days before the tournament, the Wimbledon trophy took a tour outside of Britain for the first time, travelling with ESPN to the United States, where it got picked up, fondled and passed around almost like a new-born baby. It did, however, throw up something I didn’t know before. The title of the men’s trophy reads: “All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Championship of the World.” Now forget about the World Series-esque ludicrousness of it all. What’s more worrying is the “single-handed” bit – does that mean Murray, with two hands on his backhand, wouldn’t be allowed to win but Federer would?!

I wonder why Johnny Marray has never played with Jamie Murray. Are they missing a trick here?

He has played with Jamie Murray a few times and they've won a few Challenger doubles titles together:-
    Astana, Kazakhstan, 2009, Bergamo 2010, Salinas 2010.
They also got to the Final at Challengers in Jersey and Rhodes.

They partnered up for most of the first half of 2010 too but posted a number of R1 losses amongst those wins including R1 at Wimbledon to Nestor/Zimonjic in 5 close sets. After that they played Bastad and then Jonny hooked up with Jamie Delgado until the back end of 2011.

    this from the Guardian
a very long feature but rather good; at the end he says he had a text from andy on sat night.
clipping - "Has he heard from Andy Murray since he won? Oh yes, he says, he gets on well with the whole Murray clan – he, Andy, Jamie and their dad play together in an annual football match. "Yeah, he gave me a text on the Saturday evening."
and he went to the champions ball, took his bro, and they chatted to Federer - "What did Federer say to him? "He said, 'Brilliant match lads, congratulations.'" What! Federer called him and Freddie lads, I don't believe that. "Well, probably not lads, ha ha! He said, 'It looks like I'll be seeing a lot more of you this next year.' That was a nice touch. He says all the right things – it made us feel pretty good." that's FedX, even off duty!

Heartily recommend an interview with Jonny Marray in today's Sunday Times by David Walsh. Puts his lifestyle and achievement in perspective.
A few funny lines in there. Marray: 'I mean, who would want to sponsor me?'. Most he's had are free contact lenses from the local opticians.
Marray also reveals in Sunday Times interview that he had to track down a pair of grass court shoes at a sports shop for Wimbledon.
