    Re: ATP general thread

ATP events - reduced prize money

Simon Cambers, on Twitter, has highlighted the effect of Covid reducing the attendance at many of the ATP Tour events. Extracts as follows:-

This year’s Miami Open, which will take place from March 22-April 4, will have a much-reduced prize money pot, as the tournament adjusts to the Coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent restrictions placed upon it in terms of how many fans can attend. In a document seen by Tennis Majors, Miami says it will offer $300,110 to the winners of the men’s and women’s singles. That compares to the $1.354 million won by Roger Federer and Ash Barty in 2019. First-round losers will receive $10,000.
Having been forced to cancel last year’s event, organisers of the year’s first Masters 1000 event (following the postponement of Indian Wells) have made changes to this year’s event, including the removal of the stadium court, in order to comply with Coronavirus regulations.
As Kevin Anderson told@Tennis_Majors recently, prize money in 2021 is going to be directly linked to fan capacity. Hard times for everyone, including at the@MiamiOpen
Also worth remembering that the Miami Open could not take place in 2020 so it was not able to build up more reserves
    From Tennis Majors on Twitter:
    News from the @MiamiOpen:
•Winners’ prize money cut by almost 80 percent
•Players will be in bubble between hotel and site
•Fan capacity set to be 20 percent of usual level
    •No Aus Open-style quarantine required
Prize money breakdown for Miami Open Singles events:
    •Winners: $300,110
    •Runners-up: $165,000
    •Semi-finalists: $93,000
    •Quarter-finalists: $65,000
    •Round 4: $40,000
    •Round 3: $26,000
    •Round 2: $16,000
    •Round 1: $10,000
    No Quarantine BUT ...
    TESTING AND QUARANTINE
Players will not have to quarantine in the same way as they did at the AO with the United States not asking people to stay in a specific hotel.

However, all players will need a National Interest Exemption (NIE) to enter the country.

All players and coaches/team members must be able to show a negative Covid-19 test before they are allowed to board a flight to the United States. Players will be tested on arrival and must then quarantine in their hotel room until they receive a negative result. Players will then be tested four days after their first test.
This could pose a problem for some players as Andy Murray commented in an interview yesterday:
Murray explaining the current fight between his antibodies and pcr tests is weirdly entertaining. He’s still at risk to test positive here and there: not an issue with ATP rules but it’s one for traveling. He depends on each government’s decision. Next challenge : Rotterdam.

Gilles Simon is taking a break from tennis, per his Twitter statement (Google translate)
My heart is no longer there to travel and play in these conditions, unfortunately I have to take a break in order to preserve myself mentally. Hoping that morale returns as soon as possible.Thank you to all the faithful for your support. See you soon

    Re: ATP General Thread 2021

Tennis.com have written an article about players withdrawing from tournaments because of the difficulties for travel and other issues related to Covid19 restrictions. Extracts below:

The ATP 500 event in Rotterdam next week has been hit by player withdrawals, including top seed Rafa Nadal,
who is also not playing Acapulco.

The recent withdrawals from Rotterdam also include Matteo Berrettini, Denis Shapovalov, Milos Raonic, Taylor Fritz, Gael Monfils and Daniel Evans.

Nadal, who experienced a back problem before the Australian Open, withdrew saying, "Once I got back to Spain I visited my doctor and together with my team they’ve advised not to play this upcoming week."
Nadal also announced he would not be playing the following week at the ATP 500 event in Acapulco, where he has regularly competed in recent years, saying in Spanish, "In my current state of health, with a back injury, it is impossible to have such a long trip." It followed the tournament's acknowledgement that it could not offer Nadal the usual amount for playing the event because of limited crowds and the extra costs of a player bubble during the coronavirus pandemic. Top players are allowed to receive appearance fees at smaller ATP events, which can reach $1 million or higher for the biggest names.

"There are no funds with which to pay," Raul Zurutuza, the tournament director of the event, told Exelsior. "Our budget is extremely limited, we decided to invest the money in bringing who we had to bring."

That has also affected others playing the event.

"We had a confirmed agreement with [Alexander] Zverev and it would cost us more to cancel than pay," he said. "The other four or five that we invite with an appearance fee... their economic demands are substantially less than normally."

Acapulco has also dropped its prize money from $2 million to $1.2 million, in line with an ATP arrangement that allows events to reduce prize money by 60-50% when crowds are reduced to half or less.

The Miami Open has also dropped its purse, which prompted John Isner to criticize the ATP, saying the "60% cut and 80% champions cut in one of our biggest events... isn’t a partnership at all."

    Re: ATP General Thread 2021

"A 'T7 working group', which involves the ATP, WTA, the four Grand Slams and the International Tennis Federation, will start work later this month examining areas such as a unified calendar, shared commercial offerings, sponsorships and TV deals."

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Tennis could be set for a radical overhaul as the game’s main stakeholders come together in an unprecedented effort to chart a roadmap for streamlining the governance of the sport, ATP chief Andrea Gaudenzi has told Reuters.
“I’m excited to go through that process because it’s never been done before. I don’t know the outcome, but I look forward to exploring all options,” Gaudenzi said in an interview.

“We committed to start after the Australian Open to work together on our project with the help of a consultant from March. Governance, calendar rules, synergies in commercial media, data rights, sponsorship... everything is on the table.”

Tennis enjoys a massive worldwide following, but its governance is fractured with the seven organisations running different parts of the game.

Times article by Stu Fraser regarding forward plans.
    It's behind a firewall and I don't have access.

Here are some extracts as posted by Stu on Twitter:
An interview with ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi:
    - A Masters event on grass has been proposed
    - ATP has lost half its revenues because of Covid-19
    - On the PTPA: "There has to be good faith from both sides"
    - More collaboration between ATP & WTA is planned
A grass-court Masters would be a first since the series started in 1990. Gaudenzi: “I personally like the concept of having an ATP Masters 1000 on grass the week of Queen’s and Halle. It is something I have proposed to the stakeholders and to the board."

Get well soon Édouard Roger-Vasselin - another hip resurfaced tennis player!

Frenchman Édouard Roger-Vasselin becomes the latest leading tennis player to undergo hip resurfacing. Spoke with Bob Bryan & Andy Murray. Tells L'Equipe he above all wanted to be able to play soccer with his young son. Been in pain for too long.
