Andy closing the dorr on this set. Needs to stay focussed and get this done pdq.
Light is fading - Neil Harman says it's as dark out there now at 7.15 as it was at 9.15pm last night.

the answer to the question when people ask why he would take coke ,simple he is mentally fragile
What a load of tosh.
Steven @GBtennis
Seriously though, if you want to see Muzz smiling on court more, just bus in a French crowd to boo him every match :-)
now for one more kitkat this set and you can come out to serve in the fourth first, keep doing what your doing andy
cmonnnnnnnnn
What a load of tosh.ah an apologist
wheres your killer instinct?! :p...if gasquet hadnt whined when andy held his back i maybe would have a bit more sympathy...
I can agree
but I always feel sorry for the players when they makes DF's on BP's, SP's or MP's.
specially when the player is naturally talented and has mental issues

C'mon Andy!
Depends also on whether Dammit can dredge up some mental fortitude to make the next set competitive.
If Andy can get ahead early in the next set, it'll all be over. The worst case would be if the match was stopped due to bad light. We don't want Gasquet sorting his head out overnight.

Great match Andy - never doubted the outcome.
you CAN beat Ferrer - go get him
I'm so excited after that win.
I think I felt slightly pessimistic beforehand basically because the weather looked so naff. I felt it would really neutralise Murray's new aggressive forehand, and Gasquet would be feeling confident after Rome.
But in that match he showed us his worst tennis of the year, and the best tennis you'll see from anyone this year. That was another Grand Slam classic from Andy. He couldn't make a return in the first set, and although I didn't buy into his back scratching in the first set (but I don't think he was faking either) I did fear he'd just have a really flat match. The second set was obviously even more inconsistent, because he was mixing the excellent with the nasty, but perhaps those shots that hit the line in the ninth game, Gasquet's winging and the crowd, just helped him break through it all. Perhaps Richard buckled for about 20 minutes, but for the 90% of the rest of the match, it was all down to Murrays incredible all round play.
Third Set Winners: 14 Unforced Errors: 2
Fourth Set Winners: 22 Unforced Errors: 4
Those stats are INCREDIBLE on Clay and in those conditions. You won't see a better demolition, especially in those conditions. The key element was just to see how much he was loving everything about that match. We haven't seen that kind of real grittiness from Andy in years. Yes, he's made some wonderful comebacks, plenty in fact, but the way he got into Gasquets head, the way he cheered the shots in the ninth game in the second, and the way he was going ballistic when he was lobbing Gasquet in the fourth when the match had been over a long time ago.
Admittedly, Gasquet's a fruit loop, but if Lendl can bring some of his ruthlessness into Andy's game, in the way of his on court antics, to get in players heads, then thats fantastic. Perhaps you can't totally get rid of Andy's mental troubles, perhaps its something only he can remedy as he matures, but that could be a new key element to his game. Lets face it, not enough of the top players stir the pot out on court, and it might lose him some fans, but if it wins the big matches like today, fantastic.
Now Ferrer will be incredibly different and incredibly tough, but if he can bring that enthusiasm and freeness into his all round game and persona on court, he could be golden.

Great match although not sure where andy was in first set, I was watching it at my nans so had no internet so thanks for the commentary I have just read through.
Just enjoyed my dinner after watching the match on record. WOW. I really feel that Andy's back problem is now under control, if not completely behind him - the thing last week was clearly just what he said it was. I also feel that only now that he can play at full pelt, are we seeing the fruits of Lendl's input and this is only the beginning. OK so Ferrer leads 3-0 on clay and Andy is the underdog for Wed but I'm hoping he'll come out with a few surprises up his sleeve courtesy of his coach and maybe by the end it'll be 3-1 but even if it isn't, if he gives his all like today I'll be happy with him.
Congratulations Andy. Well done. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Yes, he's always been a great battler - but more in the style of Simon. I think I now see more pop on the forehand, which has been needed for a long time.

Phenomanal effort from Andy. Not just today but throughout this tournament and the trauma he went through in the first round. To bounce back in the fashion he has done is simply stunning. I'm helping myself to a large chunk of humble pie, I thought he should have packed it in after the first set against Jarkko.
PS apologies for the exchange with the du earlier in the thread. Just brought up some stuff for me, but it's cool. I'm sure myself and the du will clash again over the course off the year especially in the football thread :rolling: ;) :cheer:

I just would urge a little caution in our celebrations. I still do not know how Andy avoided going two sets down, managing to hold and then Richie giving him the present of a DF. Andy started playing some awful UEs in the second half of the second set and just hung on. OK the third and fourth sets were a different story, and once Andy gets on a roll off into the distance he goes, but it would be nice if he could consolidate more breaks more often to allow him the chance to get on that roll more easily and effortlessly.
Put another way, the winner of Andy and Daviid IMHO is likely to be the one whose worst tennis is still better than the other's worst, if you see what I mean.

I see where you are coming from, Andy has play his best pretty much from the start, no going for a wander in the 1st or any other set for that matter as Ferrer wont hand him many points on a plate, but I remain hopeful.

Unless Andy comes out and plays his best best tennis..! I'm still enjoying celebrating this win with a clear view of the tough job Andy has ahead of him. Loved it whichever way he won the points.
I had hoped to see at least some of Andy's match. But was exhausted so when Sharapova was forced into a third set, I just had to get some sleep - I am in the Philippines, seven hours ahead of UK time.
But I woke up two hours later and could not resist putting the tv on. At first I wished I hadn't bothered. Andy had lost the first set and faced a break point at 4-4 in the second.
But as soon as I started watching, he began playing brilliantly!
What a performance! This was Andy at his best, playing sublime tennis.
It really was a masterclass. Gasquet was not playing badly, but he was just in a different league to Andy.
When he is on this form, Andy can beat anyone.
Wonderful to watch - really was like watching an artist at work.
