View Full Version : WIMBLEDON 2012, R3: Andy beats the clock and Baggy 7-5 3-6 7-5 6-1

Seconds out - round Three.
Andy faces Marcos Baghdatis on Saturday to play for a place in the 4th Round and 2nd week of Wimbledon. The Cypriot earlier came through his match against Gregor Dimitrov 7'5, 4'1 ret'd.
Andy had trouble playing Baggy in the past but he's won their 2 most recent encounters.
It's 6 years since Marcos beat Muzzah on grass in R16 of Wimbledon. Their H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=B837) lies at 3-3.
The 27yr old from Limassol has had an up and down time of it in recent years and is currently ranked#42 but at one time he was ranked #8 after reaching the Final of the Australian Open in 2006. His game has become somewhat inconsistent recently and it's 2010 since he last won a title (Sydney). He plays well on grass and interestingly is coached by Andy's former coach Miles McLagan.
This could be an intriguing match; Baggy seemed to have Andy's number in the past but of late it's Muzzah's career path that has remained constant.
The match will be played on Saturday - court and time tbc.
Forecasters predict that it will be cooler, around 18/19C, with winds of 29kmph and with a 60% chance of rain. Let's hope Andy is put on Centre Court!!!

Glad it's Baggy rather than Dimitrov to be frank. You know what you are going to get with Baggy, as for Grigor very raw talent which makes him more dangerous because if he gets it going can just blow you off the court in stunning fashion.
Will be a lot of rallies in this match but if Andy plays his best or near to his best he wins. It's as simple as that.
So looking at the h2h, we should be hoping it goes 4 or 5 sets!

I can't wait !! I'm really enjoying Andy's games at Wimbeldon
I know Baggy is a bad matchup for Andy, but I really hope he comes through. With Rafa out, this is Andy's best chance at the title since 2009.

That's what everybody is saying, isn't a bit presumptous after what happened to Rafa. I hope Andy does not think like that, that's underestimate the rest of the players in his section, like ARod Ferrer Cilic and Del P and the rest. Andy should focus on Baggy just now. I'm sure he will but all that talk about finals and winning is just too nerve wracking to think about. I'm taking one match at a time and keeping fingers crossed and praying he keeps healthy.
As usual Andy........The Very Best of Luck!!!!

Wouldn't mind that but with Wimbledon sticking to tradition they would never consider it.

So what would they do with any matches that are held over? They surely can't expect them to finish their 3rd round match and play a 4th round on Monday.

I may be wrong but didn't something like that happen a while back? It was a year when they had terrible weather and they had no roof. I seem to recall Djoko complaining back then that they didn't play on Sunday.

You've got to assume ferrer & roddick will go at least 3 hours.
40 minutes to close the roof.

This is what Nick Bollettieri has to say
http://nickstennispicks.com/
Andy Murray (GBR) vs. Marcos Baghdatis (CYP)
Right now Baghdatis is dangerous, he moves well and the audience always seem to get behind him. He can get emotional and lets them take over. Andy Murray is doing everything very good. He has been alot better in the controlling of his emotions. Ivan Lendl has been helping him immensely.
Nick’s Pick- I have to give the edge to Murray in 4 sets in this one.

Now that the Roddick/Ferrer match is taking a long time, it could mean Andy's match goes under cover for part of it. I hope that does not give Baggy an advantage, like it did Wawrinka.

argh i havnt managed to watch any of andys match live so far and today i was fairly confident i would see some of it! out at 8pm.... :'( :'( :'(
I'm not sure Andy's a big fan of the conditions under the roof, tbh.
But that's something Miles will know and make sure Baggy knows how to play it.
I hope if they do go long that they close the roof before Andy's match starts. I think it would be better for Andy to play the whole match under the roof rather than change half way through. Mind you - if this match goes to 5 sets Andy might not get on at all!
It's possible the whole match may be played under the roof, hopefully Andy will be fine with the conditions either way.if there is no chance of it finishing in day light when it starts, then they should close the roof from the start
They took a bit of heat for that yesterday - i think they'll want to start the match with the roof open if at all possible, then close it at the end of a set.
I'm back! I thought Andy would be playing by now!
DaveArneRiise

Yep, but they'll be wanting to show they stick to their "outdoor tournament where possible" philosophy
36 minutes that set another one of those would be nice

I should think there are some very nervous people in the referee's office at Wimbledon right now.

what does nel harman mean? about whether to close roof?
yup. Also I guess if this match goes on for a long time as they cannot play very late at night on Centre.
Anyway Ferrer has broken so hopefully the match will be on soon.
Either way - the first points of this match could be won before the first ball is hit.
Cos if Andy really doesn't like the roof shut, Miles will be in the Ref's office asking for it to be closed before the Match.
And Lendl will be doing the opposite.
Interesting to see who wins that one!

Neil Harman @NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) I should think there are some very nervous people in the referee's office at Wimbledon right now.28mins ago
When this match ends they have to make quite a tricky decision.
Do they close the roof BEFORE the match starts. It would delay the start of the match but would enable the same conditions throughout. It would take 35mins instead of 10mins between one match ending and Murray/Baggy starting.
Do they start the match and then around 9pm when the light goes stop play for 30/35mins whilst the roof goes on so they can continue for 90mins under lights? This would (a) disrupt the flow of play and (b) the players would end up playing different conditions for half the match.

Yes, I would have thought that Andy would prefer it shut.
It's very windy out there today on Centre Court and in the past that's been a problem for Andy so he might, on this occasion prefer it shut. But he's said before he's not so keen on the conditions; the balls play heavier and it's colder.
Part of Miles must be wanting andy to win...as much as he talks the talk as baghdatis coach...

Yes, it's been warm and sunny today but very windy - and Andy doesn't like the wind. Starting now the match will certainly be played at least partly under the roof, which I think will be better for Andy, regardless of what he might have said. I don't think Baggy minds the wind at all.

baggy is being more aggressive whereas andy is just patting. Baggy is handling conditions better. This looks dangerous
5-4 and murrray is moaning about something
He should have stopped play to challenge the ball and he didn't. If he had he would have won the point as reply showed it was out.

5-4 and murrray is moaning about something
Andy thought it was out but didn't stop playing or put his hand up.
Good job because the ball clipped the line.
Andy needs to calm down - he's a bit jittery still and he's not yet serving so well which is a good indicator of his confidence. Perhaps the last couple of games will fire him up to raise his level of play 'cos he needs to pronto. Marcos is deffo being the aggressor and it's paying off.
replay showed it was in

Good service game from Andy there and 5 all, let's step it up!
We really need Andy to take this set to settle him down.
Stuart Fraser @stu_fraser
Will be a bit of a change in conditions when the roof eventually has to shut. Maybe an idea to have shut it before start? #Wimbledon
Stuart Fraser @stu_fraser
That's what I thought they would do.

was that Miles? :D
Yes, and he's wearing a white hat instead of the tatty old blue one he used to wear.
To his right is Marcos's girlfriend, former player Karolina Sprem, who is pregnant.
Baggy to be a Daddy!!!

Fab from Andy, now take the set Andy!
Andy's still peppering the service line with his ground strokes. Baggy has definitely been the aggressor. But Andy's still serving for the set. It's a funny old game.
nice move in

First set to Andy 7-5, certainly not the best set he's ever played but he took the big points. Now let's step it up in the 2nd!
COME ON!!!! Really feel that after the first round andy has been a bit below par but is getting the job done, sign of a true champ ;)after the first round ? you mean one match against evo ? andy got the job done and pretty much predicted before hand it would be a game without rythm and he would have to slug it oot

Why on earth have the Beeb given Bradman the Murray match - he's doing my head in!!
McEnroe and Mullins ripping into Andy about his "so called" injury problems and C'mon Tim as usual says nothing in Andy's defence.
