I don't buy 'the grass won't take it' - what if each match had gone the distance today - they would have had another 4 sets of tennis - plenty of time to finish one of the unfinished matches from the outside courts. Tomorrow they are starting on Centre and Court 1 at 12 - why didn't they do that today - Andy probably would have finished if he had had another hour. Is there anywhere on the Wimbledon site where we can register complaints?

The courts are a living breathing thing and need time to recover.
Especially with the Olympics coming up you jut can't keep hammering centre every night as much as I'd love to see it.
Centre already has more play than any other court.
I know here is a huge amount of effort going into maintaining the courts but am sure there is much more than we are aware.
The nature of the grass is the fundamental reason there is a 1 o'clock kick off on main courts, it's why there is no play on middle Sunday and why Wimbledon won't ask for night sessions.
A much as we might think it stupid, the decision is pretty logical.

They don't move the crowd to keep them with a match. Your ticket says that you see whatever play there happens to be on the court you have the ticket for. I was once on Court 1 and it got quite late, it was dark and spitting with rain and windy, and there was thunder and lightning, and they announced that they might switch the end of the match to Centre - well, if they had I'm sure there would have been a riot because the crowd were really enjoying the match. As it was, the players thankfully said that they wanted to carry on to the end on Court 1 and they did.

I have just got back from Wimbledon, we had Court 1 tickets as you can imagine bitterly dissapointed, but I would like to make a point here ,the Novak match finished at about7.45ish they could have easily put another match on Centre tonight they were still selling returns and people were running on to Centre when the Djokovic match was practically over,I got the impression nobody quite knew what was going on.
As a massive Andy fan I would have been dissapointed not to have seen the conclusion of the match, but I would like to have gone to bed knowing Andy had won the match, I appreciate you are suppose to stay on the same Court for the duration of your match, but this is a British Tournament and we have a big contender for the title.
Also with the weather forecast so bad for Monday and Tuesday why didn't play start at 12 today, and another point when the girls went off, all the other outside courts were playing they should have made sure the girls came back and started play sooner.
When I was parking my car one of my Neighbours said "I know where you have been" and he reminded me that VW won in a Jubilee year so is that a good omen????

So, given that it's forecast to rain all day tomorrow, Andy is expected to play R4 on Wednesday, QF on Thursday, and SF on Friday, and on Sunday still beat Fed or Nole who play a gentle three-setter on Wednesday before their semi on Friday? I don't think Fred Perry's getting very worried about his record this year!:grrr:

dewster99
02-07-2012, 21:36
this is an absolutely shocking decision! Andy was in the driving seat and all over Cilic it would've been over in another 45-60mins but now he'll be starting cold again and faces the possibility of not even getting on court. As for not being able to change court once the match has started, why the **** not? It's not as though anyone gains an advantage as both players are having to adapt and are playing the same conditions. The draw is opening up now too as Ferrer v Del Po could easily go long and with Fish up against Tsonga if Andy got to the Semis he could be playing Fish Baker or Kohli which let's face it sounds like a round 2/3 match up. I was thinknig earlier when I left that Andy would breeze through and Ferrer and Del Po would be the ones facing 2 matches in 2 days which would've been great for Andy. I fear that this is Andy's rain affeected year like Tim's in 2001. This match which could've been very straight forward could now go 4/5 sets and then having to play the next day too? Wimbledon organisers have ruined Andy's chances simple as and if he gets through it and makes the semis then he deserves the title more than anyone else out there

Andy cannot receive favourable treatment. However, he cannot receive unfavourable treatment. Nor can the other men, for that matter.
Factually:
1. There are five round of 16 matches still live, three having completed one set and somewhere in their second sets.
2. All the women’s round of 16 matches have been completed.
3. There will be tennis on centre court tomorrow. Given the concerns over letting the grass breathe, let’s say there can be six, seven hours of tennis there.
4. The organisers seem to be hoping that there will be a let off from the rain enough to try and get the men’s matches done. The five matches are scheduled first on five different courts, including one on centre court.
5. There are two women’s QF matches scheduled on Centre Court. Presuming these three matches get completed, if it rains the whole day tomorrow, then tomorrow night there will be four men’s round of 16 matches still not completed, three of which will go into a third day to be completed. There will be two QF ladies’ matches still to be played (on OPPOSITE sides of the draw, note).
6. My personal choice would be to prioritise getting the men’s round of 16 over first and if necessary have a “Super Wednesday” when all QFs are played. There is a very big different between playing potentially two five set matches on consecutive days, and two three set matches – let’s face it, men and women play best of three on consecutive days in many tournaments, including the last few rounds of Master’s. I know Wimbledon likes to mix um gentlemen’s and ladies’ singles, but if they scheduled the four ladies QFs at the same time (i.e. first or second scheduled) on outside courts that would assure parity.
7. Then you could at least make sure one side of the men’s QF draw got completed on centre court or, the three matches which had started got completed – there are arguments on each side here. Personally I think it is better to ensure the four quarter finalists on one side of the draw are decided then even though the semi finalists might get an extra day, it would be no worse than the extra day that happens at USO. Not ideal, but we are looking at the least worse scenario here.
8. But as it is, there could be men’s last 16 matches and women’s QF matches to complete on both sides of the draw – a much bigger mess!
PS I emailed this because it is trying to appeal to reason on behalf of ALL the men, not just Andy!

I was there yesterday and you know ... I do wonder whether the crowd on the smaller show courts are perhaps more fans than some (not all) of the people you typically find on Centre.
There was a a lot of support for Andy out there.

People were quite up for a treat when they found that they would have a chance to see Andy in action.
If the weather over the next couple of days was not such an issue, I would like to bet that there wouldn't be such an issue.

Neil Harman was pushing for Gasquet/Mayer to be moved Centre last night as it would have made sense to close out the top half of the draw (someone mentioned it in the thread further up)

I hope he gets the job done today. Start quickly Andy and play with a sense of urgency.

Well if Andy gets through this match today and all the other players get through their matches today, I would expect they will put Andy on Centre for his quarter finals.

If it then rains again on Wednesday stopping matches for the day, it means that Nole or Fed could be on an outside court and end up playing on both the Thursday and Friday, which would be slightly more to Andy's advantage, if Andy progresses to the final.

Interestingly Petch was not against Andy being on Court no 1 on the Sky report this morning.

Bardot
03-07-2012, 10:39
It's not only the fact Andy was scheduled on the uncovered Court 1 but also what they chose to put Centre Court in terms of prospective quality. Djokovic and Federer against 2 unseeded players with whom they have huge win records over and not forgetting Troicki's almost supine behaviour whenever he plays his good friend. Added to this a women's match featuring the crowd dispersing Azarenka against an underpowered Ivanovic. And so it proved to be with Malisse wimping out against an ailing Federer, Azarenka pounding Ivanovic :shamed: and Troicki playing his part as the obedient fanboy to perfection.

worrying about being criticised for having the roof shut is stupid. The time it takes for the roof to open is less than that of it closing cos there's no issue of air conditions so just close it and then open it later if necessary

This is one of reasons why US Open is my favourite grand slam. Just so much more relaxed up there, better organisation. Night time matches so the crowd can embrace and enjoy dramatic exciting night time encounters through the night. Much more laid back environment, not like this diabolical which is just way behind the times.

Probably why Andy prefers the US Open too.
