View Full Version : OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL WINNER: Awesome Andy, Magical Murray wins 6'2, 6'1, 6'4
Don't know if anyone has posted this, but a Gold and Silver medal puts Andy 28th in the medals table for individual athletes.
He's the highest-placed of Team GB & NI - next is Ed Clancy with a Gold and Bronze.
He's also the second-placed Tennis player, with only Serena with 2 golds above him.
Andy you were amazing. Had a great day :GBflag:- Wore my Andy Murray signed UK shirt for the semis and final. :gold:
Hope his signature doesn't come off when I wash it.

Do hope you're feeling better and glad that Andy's success has lifted your spirits. Invite me to your party.:GBsmile::GBflag:
You're welcome, but the house is in a mess. :welcome:
Honestly, this has been the happiest illness I've ever had! What are fevers, headaches, etc., to Andy winning TWO Olympic medals? :gold::silver::swingin:
But seriously, I think when Wimbledon rolls around again, Andy can carry these memories with him, to offset all the losing memories: the incredible crowd support, beating Fed in straight sets in a high profile setting - and Djokovic in the previous round, on Wimbledon's Centre Court - yeah, I think that this could be, psychologically, an important breakthrough, a tremendous boost. I won't be the least surprised if he wins the US Open, I certainly hope he'll win the AO (so I can watch it live without having to stay up too late), and as for Wimbledon, well, I reckon what with this year's Wimbledon final and Olympic gold the home crowd support will be far stronger next time 'round.
Perhaps I might be getting a little ahead of things, but I'm determined to send loads of positive vibes to Andy ;) , not that he needs them, really. Still, I've got really positive feelings about the rest of the year.
Go Andy!:yahoo::dance::grouphug:
excellent wasn't a dream then, can go back to sleep
It's all been said - just brilliant. I was still nervous waiting for Fed to come back but not this time. Wonderful stuff!
Glad one of the first people Judy hugged was Laura...!!
Still smiling! To be honest, I feel a bit saturated with tennis - French Open, Queens, Wimbledon, Olympic tennis - a marathon few months with the best finish ever!! A short break now, then the US Open. Thrilled he has the gold medal obviously but my dream has always been a grand slam win for him, just one, well perhaps two, or maybe three .... I don't want him to become a tad smug ...
like some people we could mention!

It was interesting in the interview on BBC this morning That Andy admitted he was under a lot of pressure at Wimbledon and was nervous going into the final where as at the Olympics he didn't feel so pressurized,
A question do all the gold medal winners get an honour from the Queen in the New Year

I found the interview this morning very interesting too, MP, particularly when Andy mentioned how much Lendl had helped him put things into perspective after Wimbledon. This win might be just the spring board Andy needs going forward - he didn't just beat Djoko and Fed - he destroyed them. It has to be a great confidence booster.

Nothing is guaranteed but I imagine the New Year honours will be well peppered with accolades to our sporting heroes. It's just that this year there are so many who are heroes!!!
late to the party, but what a super Sunday for andy and laura. she has had an absolute whale of a time, and delighted to win a medal, colour immaterial, whereas andy is properly miffed that it is 'only' silver. and playing mixed with andy will i expect stand her in good stead, she can certainly more than hold her own in good company. great that judy was there to give her a hug and a thumbs up.
andy played superbly, saw off fed's early challenge and never took his foot off his neck after that. to me,that is the value of lendyl as his coach. their discussions and analysis of last month's defeat must be where andy's game plan originated, and didn't he just deliver!
yes, i agree, those 2 matches against fed, in wimbledon and in the olympics will show andy how to win a slam final. bring it on!
excellent wasn't a dream then, can go back to sleepThat's funny, I woke up with the words of a song going round my head...
A long long time ago
I can still remember how
That tennis used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make Wimbledon dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But the Olympic scream made me shiver
With every shot I'd deliver
Bad news on the scoreboard
And louder centre court roared
I can remember that I cried
When I stood defeated at his side
But something touched me deep inside
**The day Fed's Olympic dream died**
So
[Chorus]
Bye, bye Mr Humble Swiss Pie
Drove my backhand past your forehand and made you cry
Them good ole boys in the pressroom can file
Sayin' this'll be the day that I smile
This'll be the day that I smile...
... now all I've got to do is come up with a tune for it

Glad to know I wasn't the only one waking up this morning and needing to check with the papers that I hadn't had a lovely dream.
For the first time in years I sat serenly still in my armchair and watched Andy's final. I had lined up numerous jobs to do whilst watching because normally I get so agitated.
But he was magnificent ----and it couldn't have been against a better person.
This could be the start of many as the Davis Cup was for Novak :cheer:

Loved Tim's "woohoo" when Andy served an ace to win Gold! :rolling:
Still hasn't sunk in. Am particularly pleased that he had Nole in his half and Roger had "no one" - i.e. Rafa was missing. So Andy had to go the "normal" route to his well deserved medal. Had he not had to play Nole I bet people would have said he'd had it easy :grrr:!

Does anyone know how many more points Andy needs to be a dead cert for London?

I wonder why that site doesn't show him as playing in Toronto?
Madeline

I think it's not yet fully updated. Most of the Toronto players are not shown as playing there.
Just recovering from my hangover after a great couple of weeks of tennis ie Olympics, and two weeks getting up close and personal with the players in Wrexham, and meeting Greg Rudsedski.
So stoked for Andy and team GB, gutted they didn't make it a double, but still a great result.
I was so nervous for him in the singles, I almost couldn't watch, and didn't allow myself to get too carried away until he'd actually won it. I was expecting Fed to suddenly bring his A game once he was down far enough, and he never did. I've never seen Andy play so well either, or the crowd get behind him in the way that they did. I only hope that they'll do the same next Wimby.
Also hope that this best of five set victory will give him the confidence to get a major really soon, like Davis cup did for Djokers and Delpo.
SSOOOOOOO proud of you Andy.
Rob just went and got me a copy of the Telegraph and the Sun (sorry!) cos Andy is on the cover of both :)
I went and bought the times on Monday. I also bough 4 copies of the sun to get an addidas wristband (cheaper), subsequently throwing away the papers only after removing the first few pages of Andy :)

Congrats to all: Andy, his family and team, Great Britain and fans his huge achievement at Olympics.

Disappointed that it isn't possible to buy Andy's gold medal stamp singly, only in sixes. I would have liked one to stick on my centre court postcard; anyone know of anywhere selling them separately - prepared to pay more!

They are only sold in packs of 6. However, they're the same individual price as a normal 60p stamp. Can you chat to other people needing first class stamps and split the cost of a set so you maybe use 1 and keep 1?
Or buy them and use up over the next few months?
I posted this on Judy's thread a few days ago but thought it should go here too.

Full of admiration for tennis players; ok they make the money but what a gruelling schedule they have; when Andy should have been basking in the glory with family and friends, he was back in soul-less airports. I know it is all about points - and we know what points mean - but out of interest, how many tournaments does Andy play over a 12 month period? I hope after the US Open he has some r & r time, and can reflect on what he's achieved for himself and the country - having watched tennis for 60 years I can honestly say I've never enjoyed anything as much - thank you Andy and making an old lady very happy!
but out of interest, how many tournaments does Andy play over a 12 month period?
They all play a lot of tournaments, but the top players play a crazy number of matches as they get deep into most tournaments. Andy played 20 tournaments last year (including Davis Cup), but he played 69 matches. Which is a lot. However, it's nowhere near the 81 Rafa played in 2010 when he was winning pretty much everything! There's been a lot of talk over the years about the top players having to play too many games, but the numbers seem to keep going up.

Pity Andy wasn't there for the 'family gold' photos today; as I said the other day, it's a hard life being a top tennis player. Congratulations to everyone especially the ones who couldn't be there!

Have just spent a while catching up on this thread after being on holiday.
What a day it was, I managed to see some of the final on French tv but their coverage of the Olympics was very bizarre; hand ball, basket ball and synchronised swimming seemed to be the top choice! Got so annoyed when they showed a couple of games of the gold medal match and then switched over to something else :grrr: and of course it was too much to expect them to show the medal ceremony! Still, I have just finished watching it and it's made me feel very proud and emotional. When everything clicks into place for Andy he really is nothing short of sensational. It'll happen again for sure and he will get his slam.
