Wow! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
Laura's first appearance in the second week of a slam. Last Brit to do that in WTA was Sam Smith back in 1998.
Top 70 beckons, I think? (edit: ranking at least 75)
Also, now British number 1.
Richly deserved win - once again!
Her first top 10 win. Last Brit to do that in WTA Slam was Sam Smith back in 1998 (again!).
Laura was already due to feature in the NY times tomorrow - here's the article:

Marvellous performance from Laura, absolutely fantastic and so cool under pressure! of course long way to go but lools like she's come of age this week!:clap::clap:
You wouldn't believe it - with two points to go, our power went off so I missed the end. So glad that she won though - fantastic!!!!!!!
Oh my goodness! I've only just switched on my computer this evening (I am far too busy with too many things at the moment) and am amazed at Laura beating Na Li! That is the most incredible win! tbh when I was watching her against Kim I wondered whether Kim is pregnant, so although I was pleasantly surprised I thought there might be a reason for Kim not being at her best. Congratulations Laura! Good luck for the rest of the tournament!

In her USO Open interview Laura mentioned she has been working with Jez, Andy's trainer, the last few weeks, and really likes the work she has been doing. Being able to have access to a top top player's team and the atmospheric and work ethic of what that means on a daily basis, along with the new coach and her new-found confidence sounds like a triple recipe for success in its own right!
She also mentioned something interesting - she has been working on tactical play with her coach and that now she does not try and hit a winner of an unsuitable ball, but plays the percentage shot.
Yes, she seems to have come of age this week. Perhaps not for the AO in January, but if she keeps on like this it may not be too long before she is seeded at the slams, with the resulting easier access to at least round 3.
Exciting times!

Just went back and looked. She has every women's GS winner for the last four years in her draw (five in a row most likely) except for 2009 RG (Kuznetsova) and 2010 (Schiavone). If the miracle happened and she won the tourney, certainly nobody could accuse her of having an easy draw!
In fact, it would be great to have a stats expert to answer the question as to which GS winner had to beat the largest no. of GS winners to win a GS in the last few years. Given that big three (and Potty) have won the men's slams for the last million years, it presumably must be a WTA player. Anyone know by any chance?

She's playing so well isn't she. It's just all come together and she looks like a top 10 player already.
But this draw she is just getting more and more ridiculous, if she beats Stosur she plays Azarenka right?

Aga Rad has beaten Jankovic in straight sets.
Robbie Vinci has beaten little Dom, also in straight sets. That result in particular has had a bit of an impact on BOTP...
Laura Robson will face Samantha Stosur 3rd on Armstrong, where she beat Li Na, tomorrow. Estimated start time 9/10pm UK time.

I cannot for the life of me understand why the DEFENDING CHAMPION has never been given a night match on Ashe as yet??? Only day matches. This one isn't even on Ashe.
Mark Petchey who is commentaqting on Andy's match at the moment thinks that Laura has a good chance to beat Stosur tomorrow. He also said that he was chatting to Nick Bollettieri on the bus and Bollettieri thought Laura had a good chance too. :)
I cannot for the life of me understand why the DEFENDING CHAMPION has never been given a night match on Ashe as yet??? Only day matches. This one isn't even on Ashe.
Sam Stosur pretty much shuts herself off when she's playing. Cap, impenetrable glasses. Doesn't want/ need to connect with the crowd. I believe she's very shy generally. So she isn't exactly the sort of character that folk in the States will take to.
The US public almost definitely view her slam win as a freak result. She's not viewed as a champion with a capital 'C' there, for sure.
Hence the scheduling, I suspect. By contrast, Sharapova, Vika - tall, blonde, and certainly in Vika's case, brash. All ticks the right boxes.

01-09-2012, 21:39
Well one match at a time but if I could have my pick of seeded opponents for Laura's next match, Sam would certainly be the choice before some of the others (perhaps Ana Ivanovic first). Let's see.
What IS important for her, having just seen Andy, is that the match is later in the afternoon and not during the hottest part of the day!
The fact that Laura is so tall really counts in her favour with playing Stosur.
Stosur plays with a lot of top spin - and also has a big first serve and a kick serve too. Very few women on the tour can do that.
Laura has the height to deal with the kick serve and the top spin off the ground - plus has the wing span and good return game to counter Stosur's first serves.
If she plays well then her game does match up quite well to Stosur's.
But she needs another good match, for sure.
Oh - and there are some other interesting matches going on too. Hlavakova's just beaten Kirilenko, which was an excellent win. Ivanovic v Stevens later tonight could be an intriguing match too.
david1610

Sloane Stephens against Ana Ivanovic.
Chance for another of the teenage sensations to follow Laura.
Sloane is a great friend of Heather who is a great friend of Laura. Ana's coach Nigel is the daughter of Kim, Andy's girlfriend.
This tennis world is getting smaller!
The first set of the Stephens v Ivanovic match is a bit stuttering - as was the first set of the Na v Robson match last night.
Stephens is acquitting herself well - but does need to stop feeing ivanovic's forehand.

The glass is more than half full.
Yes another sensational result would have been great but she looked conscious of where she was today and was a bit of a "rabbit in the headlights", and her frailties as a rising 18-year-old were on show as well as her potential. The "no fear" let's go for the shots mentality was today tempered with a bit of "what if"?
I am SO pleased she held serve at 5-2 and then broke serve. When it is a memory in a few months, she will have two sensational wins and a 6-4 6-4 defeat which is a respectable score for ANYONE against a top ten player.
And let us remember this is still about getting experience. Every match point saved is worth its weight in future ranking points!
Great tournament Laura. Well done! :)

Amazing resistance from Laura at the end but it wasn't quite enough. Laura didn't really bring her A game today and started to falter after she lost the 1st. Credit to Sam though as she put Robson under pressure.
Obviously still a great tournament for Laura and sure she'll build on it. Future should be promising!
Stosur played a relatively solid match.
Laura probably not quite as good as she was against Kim. However, she had opportunities in this match - at 4-4 in the first set in particular. Chances that she will hopefully take on other occasions.
Excellent fight in that lengthy service game at 2-5 in second set - and also to break back at 3-5.
A little unlucky with the net cord on match point - but the best player on the day won, I guess.

The only way for Laura is up! What a great tournament for her and she's got oodles of time to develop and unlike some players who showed promise but didn't deliver in the end, I've a feeling Laura will step up and quite quickly too. We may see the same sort of rise up the rankings as we saw with Andy. Fingers crossed.

Not sure when this started but it might not have helped Laura last night.

After Fed got his W/O Neil Harman tweeted this:
What CBS wouldn't give to have Murray v Raonic to play now*. Serves them right for damn selfish scheduling
;)
And he's just added this ...
Neil Harman @NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) GSM Serena 6-0, 6-0. That's two walkovers today
*Instead, they moved Cilic v Klizan over onto Ashe ...

They're showing the Bryan Brothers now. They MUST show an American on Labour Day. Any American it seems.
Laura reminds me of Angelique Kerber - both lefties and both big hitters - they even wear the same kit! Kerber has made the top 10 this year - let's hope Laura follows suit.

And the Williams sisters lost to Team Russia 6-1 6-4. Interesting. Good for Maria and Nadia. I wish I could have seen all of that match on telly as it was scheduled.
Anyone catch the Stosur v Azarenka match?
Vika won 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 - really good match overall, but the 3rd set was especially good!
I saw the last few games - really wish Sam could have beaten Vika the Shrika!

Certainly was a great contest in the 3rd set and whilst I was hoping Sam would come through credit to Vika for the win. Great fightback from Sam but she was always having to battle and it wasn't an ideal start in the breaker. It was actually the first time Stosur has taken a set from Azarenka.

Shazza has clearly benefitted from the rain delay; she's just taken the 2nd set 6'3 off Bartoli (who won the first by the same scoreline).
JAMES4578

Yes Sharapova must be the favourite now, after a slow start yesterday. Doubted Bartoli would be able to keep it going. Hopefully no more rain delays!
MaSha was a break up in the third but it's back on serve.

So was I...she so quirky and different from the other women. She makes me smile. Both played some great shots but service games were dire sometimes.
yeah SG , but the service games are usually dire in the womens matches lol
just cant get behind Shazza when she screeches like she does , so annoying !!!!!!
I really like Bartoli, but I predicted Shazza to beat her in BOTP so I'm not unhappy.
And wasn't Pere Bartoli going through the mill? At least his skittish daughter didn't send him away from the court like she did at SW19 last year.
Errani bt Vinci btw. Decent match considering they are close friends and doubles partners (never a great combination for a decent singles match).

Wow! Shocked that Team Russia who knocked out the Williams sisters were themselves knocked out by Team Spain in the 1.4 final today. Too bad.
It's team Czech Republic versus team Italy in the final.
Two quality doubles teams. The 2012 French Open champions against the 2011 French Open winners. Should be a good match.
Who is favourite? Possibly the Italian team.

Victoria won it in 3 6-4 in the final set
did those of you who watched that match , see when Mary Carillo showed them practising , and low and behold , neither of them were making a sound . Wish they would transfer that to their games , would be alot more people watching I bet !!!!
and just as I figured , Serena is killing Sara , poor girl doesnt stand a chance .

I thought Vica and Maria's match was good. Three sets of very evenly matched play but this one between Serena and Sara is boring. And yes, I did see them practising..very strange but I have heard it before that they don't shriek.
In my view they should dock points for excessive grunting/screeching - it would soon stop. I can't watch a Sharapova or Azarenka match with the sound turned up and I'm sure I'm not alone in my glory!

Yes, the screaming - and it's SCREAMING - is hard to bear. I was rooting for Azarenka just to shut Maria up. Unbearable.
I hope Victoria can do something vs Serena but I fear it will be yet another one-sided final.

I'm sure that you're not, but I'd say that the genie is out of the bottle with this one. Unlikely to be curtailed, especially when so many of the top players do it.
And even if there were rules for this, it would be unlikely to be enforced effectively. The continual breaking of rules re: time between points is a good example of this - on both the men's and women's side.
Also, I'm afraid that the shrieking aspect provides ammunition for detractors of the women's game, and sexism in general. In today's Guardian newspaper, they were referred to as 'Fishwives on gin'.

Thought it was a quality contest with Vika and Maria but Azarenka was stronger in the end and the more solid on service in that final set. Whilst I regard serena as the strong favourite think Victoria it's probably best that the no1 ranked player is in the final alongside the dominant force the past few months. Wasn't surprised Erani made little impact, her serve is far slower that Williams. on the grunting issue would be good if some players could tone it down a bit but personally I wouldn't turn the sound down as I like to hear the ball. As far as I'm aware they're trying to persuade the next generation to avoid grunting but not tackling the current stars. It may seem a bit strange no one does it in practice but probably because there's not the same intensity. Think some seem to think making a noise gives you more power. I remember once Natalie Tauziat complained to the umpire about Monica Seles at Wimbledon but in general players don't seem to make an issue of it.
