Really interesting pressers, and Milos was clearly in awe of Andy's level.
Very interesting to hear Andy say how it would have been much, much tougher if it had been played on (the faster) Armstrong court, and Milos talking about Ashe having a wind coming from all directions. Tomic when interview said Ashe had been intimidating as you look up and the rows of people just never seem to end. It shows just how important experience of matches on these majors courts at the slam venues is.
Just catching up with the thread after setting my alarm for half one and missing the entire first set! More than slightly annoyed. Hope you saw something!
Awww Hawks......:grouphug: - luckily for me Mr P heard the heads up about the match being brought forward so I set my alarm for midnight - could have had nearly a full extra hour of sleep though by the time they actually got started.
I think though that Milos might develop that aspect of his game and if he plays Andy a few more times we might see things work differently. It happened with the other players when they first met Andy; took 'em a few matches but some managed to suss out how to play him. Not all of them win (Lopez being a good example!) but Raonic is still young and that serve gives him the opportunity to develop other areas of his game whilst knowing he can win a lot of matches by currently getting a lot of 'easy' points on serve.
Here's what the guys had to say in their post-match pressers!
Andy - link to interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ae5KLkA7IQ&feature=g-u-u)

I think that's a very important point. Will, nay, can Milos develop his game? So many players have shown promise but don't have the innate all round talent that Andy has to move on. We can say Milos needs to improve this or that, but doing it is a different matter. Hard work alone can't achieve what Andy has achieved IMHO - he just has buckets of natural talent and ability. I'm sorry but last night's display was again evidence for me that Milos, without his serve, is not much cop - yet? - maybe - maybe not. Has he got any more in him? The mere fact that he couldn't even get a break point on Andy's serve is to me an indication that his game has a long way to go yet. Don't know what he said before the match and haven't heard the post match interview yet but I think he looked overawed eventually. As for frustration - well at least he wasn't facing bombs of serves with no chance to get into points. He got into plenty of rallies on Andy's serve but wasn't able to capitalise. Andy was the one who was entitled to be frustrated - if you can't get a racket to a serve, you have no chance.
Am propping my eyes open in work - but the kip on the sofa was worth it!
Please has anyone ogot a link to any transcripts of the pressers.
Also, did it rain after Andy had finished demolishing Raonic?
It did rain Helen - almost immediately after the players left the court. I think there should be a time limit imposed on Andy every match - he really responds to a deadline be it weather or court curfew!

I'm sorry - I know I'm probably nitpicking - but everytime I read the following comment in the news reports it irks me.
"Raonic said: "He said, 'Sorry, I got lucky a few times.' I said, 'Don't be sorry - it was simply amazing. Keep it up and you'll do well'''
It's so patronising - especially coming from a younger player who has won very little as yet.

I wish people would stop slagging Milos off. It's really upsetting me. You have to see it from my perspective. As a Canadian we've never had any decent hopes since Rusedski defected. OK, his game is still developing I admit but he didn't get to 17 in the world by accident. He's won three tournaments in the last couple of years which is HUGE for Canada. And I don't think he was being in the slightest patronizing. He told Andy he was simply amazing. He didn't have a tantrum after being defeated. He smiled and was really nice to Andy at the net and in his post match press conference despite knowing he was totally outplayed. Please stop rubbing it in. It's so unfair and plain ugly to see people treat a decent player like this.
And incidentally John McEnroe - who knows a thing or two about tennis - said last night after the match that he still thinks Milos has top 5 potential.
dont take it to heart RL , dont think people on here realize what a big deal it is for tennis fans in CANADA ( which is not a tennis nation ) to have someone at the top of the game . Think back people ,to when Andy was where Milos is and remember .
With that said , I think some have made fair points re his game , and I would agree he has a ways to go yet.
I'm sorry - I know I'm probably nitpicking - but everytime I read the following comment in the news reports it irks me.

Alis, I agree with you. It seemed to be of the same tone as his pre-match comments.
And also (maybe it's just me?) but I really didn't like Andy apologising to him and saying he'd 'got lucky' Also in the presser, that the night conditions on Ashe had helped him and that it would be a lot closer next time they played.
After such a brilliant performance, why would Andy give him any cause to make him think that he'd have some chance in future meetings? Would have much preferred him to have just given a more detached 'well played.' I feel he's too honest and open and that it's an area I'd like Lendl to do a bit of work on. :shades:
Eurosport are just showing the match again as rain has stopped play (I was watching Ferru-Richie). I didn't see the match last night so it's interesting to see some of it now.

I'm sure he didn't mean it like that. It is true that if Andy plays like that he will do well, if he reverts to his form versus Floppy then he won't.

The point I was trying to make was about potential.
There have been a number of players who showed promise but didn't gatecrash the top10. However, it seems to me that a lot of the players are developing a little later (e.g. Isner who went to college first and is now in/out the top 10) than perhaps 5 years ago when the likes of Rafa, Nole and Andy were the young guns and all fulfilled their early promise. I think there's been some changes to the game in general (slower courts for a start!) which has affected the player age range.
Andy was higher ranked for deffo at age 21 than the likes of Raonic, Isner, Harrison and others too numerous to mention. But I also think in each batch of players that there are 'exceptional talents' who just make it to the top quickly and manage to stay there.
I'd put Raonic as top10 potential - he's not far off already. His game is currently based around his serve; a decent coach could move things on quite quickly for him. A serve like that buys him time to work on other areas of his game and introduce them sensibly.
I still think it'll be a while before the present batch of 20-23yr olds knock Andy, Rafa, Nole and Fed out of the top 5 though and only when one of 'em develops his 'fear factor' significantly.
I'm sorry - I know I'm probably nitpicking - but everytime I read the following comment in the news reports it irks me.

Milos may have been trying his hand at 'irony' ...
Personally I'd cut the lad some slack. As we know all too well it's easy to be put into situations in interviews where your words don't come out how you really wanted them to (as Muzzah knows only too well .....). I don't see it that he's being deliberately patronising; just needs some advice on post-match interviews.

Great news about how andy played.
Sounded a great match by him - they have just been talking about how much he has improved on 5live!
Dare to hope.....
I don't dispute that Milos is a great talent, RL, and I'm sure he will go far. He is likely to be around for a long time and probably will spend most of that time in the top 10. As I said, I was nitpicking - in the main his comments after the match were very complimentary to Andy. I just didn't care for the exchange at the net - neither from Milos nor, for that matter, from Andy - he had absolutely nothing to apologise for in my view.

Don't really see the problem with what Milos said. If we get into analysis paralysis about what everyone says then we will always find faults. Much ado about nothing here. With regard to Milos i think he has a big future ahead of him. He is very much like Isner but I feel Milos will be a better player, Isner is a top 10 based really on a monstrous serve. I feel Milos can be better. There is an element of raw explosion to his game that I feel Isner doesn't have.
Went to sleep before the time change was announced combined with waking up late meant that I only saw the end of the match. :banghead:
Andy looking good from what I saw though, long may it continue.

After seeing Milos's presser on YouTube last night, if I had one word to describe his comments about Andy, it would be "awe".
He basically said he had not played badly, had tried three different ways of playing points against him and none of them worked.
He was not even being humble, just matter-of-face befuddled and bedazzled!

I think he meant something along the lines of: keep playing like this and you're gonna win the whole tournament coz you're BRILLIANT. Truly. If you've seen Milos being interviewed he's extremely sincere and not capable of any malice at all.
Dave, I would compare him to Isner too. Isner was "just a big serve" when people started taking notice of him. How old is he now? 27 or something? And look at his game, greatly improved indeed. He'll never be at Fed/Andy's levels and neither will Milos but I will focus my energies on the constructive criticisms and positive comments from tennis experts like Cahill, Brad and Johnny Mac.

Well I have to step in to defend Milos here..........Andy didn't go off to uni which I believe Milos did, so he's joining the profession later.

I thought he was great in his post match interview - clearly in awe of Andy's performance. I do understand how you feel, RL - we've experienced exactly the same thing here in the UK remember (I don't exactly count Henman as a result!). So I guess from my point of view, I get very defensive about prospective threats to Andy. That said, I genuinely don't like players who have huge serves whether with or without anything else because for me it makes for a boring match and no real tennis. Fortunately Milos has not yet mastered acing everyone off the court on every shot and for that I applaud him! I don't like Isner (still) or Karlovic (he's a joke when he does get into a rally) and Sampras put me off watching the game for years. If Milos does improve then I hope it's in the rest of his game and not his serve.

Must say when we heard the chat at the net we had to check to see who had said what :) Would have been fine from either! I think it sounded like a real compliment to Andy and would imagine Milos was talking about this tournament and that Andy can win ;) It was a great match and Milos handled the loss like a gentleman! Well played Andy! Seems to be the only match we are going to be watching until the rain goes away :rolling: it's on again today

He was given a scholarship to go to an American university but turned it down to go pro. But he was a brilliant student at school (both his parents are nuclear engineers).
It's his return game that needs major retooling. If he can do that then he'll be respected more, I'm sure.

His game might have looked better if he hadn't been playing Andy at his best! We can't have it both ways, give Andy the credit for confusing and bettering everything Milos threw at him, it has happened to higher ranked players in the last few month (just spotted todays date!)

I've been debating with myself whether or not to post this: it is something that has been on my mind for a long time, and I realise I may get some flack for it.
This is a fan forum for Andy Murray. Obviously some people have other favourites as well. Isn't it a bit unreasonable, though, to expect all Andy fans not to make any adverse comments about other players? To those who are apt to take offence about criticism of other players, I would prescribe a few visits to MTF! Over the years I have developed a very thick skin over adverse comments about Andy.
Personally I saw nothing wrong with what Milos said (well, not the after-match comments anyway), but I don't see why other people who did should be lambasted for saying so on a forum dedicated to Andy.
There is a lot of double standards involved here. Nothing bad may be said about Nadal or Raonic, but the Federer fans on here - and I am not one of them - must be frequently upset by the comments about him.
Madeline , your right . From now on I will defend Milos at my own risk
I read MTF occassionally , and just wow , is all I have to say about that place
I know, the mother's therapy forum can be a rough place sometimes!

I totally get what you're saying but "lambasting"? I was expressing how upset I was and you know what, I'm allowed to do just that. I love Andy - he comes first with me - but it did upset me people thinking bad things about a player who doesn't deserve it tbh. If people are going to say unfair things I'll defend him - just as Federer fans can come on and defend him as well if they're upset.
And I wouldn't go near MTF if you paid me.
PS People were really cruel to Rafa when he was losing to Rosol on this forum. It's not just Federer who gets the rough treatment.
I only go to MTF to search for info that I can't find anywhere else. I don't like it.
But I've said before, on VB I suggested a few years ago the idea of threads for people who don't like particular players as well as threads for those who do. It's worked very well on there - there are now two 'venting' threads, one for Fed and one for Nole (it seems that all other players are popular with everyone). So those that don't like Fed or Nole post on those threads, whilst those who do like them post on their normal threads (they have threads for loads of different players, far more than we have). I've suggested that we do the same on here but it hasn't been taken up.
