View Full Version : US OPEN R4: Magnificent Murray muzzles Milos 6'4, 6'4, 6'2 - into the Quarter-Final

Muzzah meets the Missile ...
Andy must beat the Canadian player if he wants to keep his dream of a US Open Final place alive but he faces another stern test here especially since it seems he might not be as physically in condition as he would normally be for the US hardcourt swing.
They've played once before and it's 21year old Milos who won on that occasion in the Quarter Final of the 2012 Barcelona event on clay 6'4, 7'6(3). They were also scheduled to meet twice but are evens in walkovers (Andy 2012 Canada Masters and Milos 2012 Miami Masters).
So, H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=R975) is 0-1 to the Canadian who has shot up the rankings in the last year and is now WR#16 (CH#16) having won 2 titles so far in San Jose and Chennai, both on hard courts which seem to suit his game better. Andy has also won 2 titles this year - Brisbane on hard court and the Olympics on grass at Wimbledon.
A night match might be better for Andy in terms of dealing with the heat and also give him a few more hours rest and recovery from his exploits against Feliciano Lopez in R3.
The match is due to be played on Monday 3rd September; OOP is released on Sunday evening.

glad Milos got thru to rd of 16 , good for him , and as he says this is all new experiences for him , but next up ...... the match Ive been dreading since the draw came out

You and me both but for different reasons. Though if Andy is fit he'll win.
I agree SG , I think Andy will win too , and Milos is just starting out , its more important for Andy right now.
If Andy plays to even 80% of his ability, he'll beat nearly everyone else in the draw in this tournament.
It's only if he's really below par - then there might be case for concern.
But pretty much every match up until Saturday next week at the earliest is technically on his racquet. He just needs to plough through them.
your right , up until Saturday , so lets just hope he keeps ploughing !!!!!

Personally I am going to take it one point at a time. Andy dodged not just one, but several, bullets today. As somebody posted, I bet nobody had predicted anything but a straight sets victory for Andy. We thought the same of Chardy. And, erm, a certain match Andy had earlier in the year... against Milos.
It will mainly be about serving. Because if Milos has one of his best serving days, he is difficult to break - even for Andy. So Andy cannot go walkabout for one of his service games in a set, because that set could be over. Even with his other talents, he has to serve well in this game.
I really, really hope this is an evening match because, for whatever reason, Andy has not seemed at home in the sun in the tournament. And his serving was so much better in his evening match.
I really, really do not think it is going to be that simple. Cautious optimism and hope. But no way the match is "already won".

02-09-2012, 01:08
Don't think any Major tournament is simple. I said I think Andy will win if he's fit. No match played by Andy is already won...think we all know that but we have to be positive as each player is positive before a match. When predictions are being made one looks at previous matches and current form coupled with hope and optimism. We can all be wrong. I do think that everyone here does take one point at a time and realises that Andy's service is key. It's obvious that Andy can not go walkabout but sure he realises this. All we can do is support him, cheer him on and hope that he does the business. Andy wants to win for himself and we want him to win. So Go Andy.....You can do it!!!
No match should be taken for granted. There is nothing said about any match "already won".
Every match is loseable, of course it is - but if he plays well, then he should win.
Yes, definitely hope for an evening match, because he's always been a better evening player anyway - and the hot afternoon really counted against him today.
No match should be taken for granted. There is nothing said about any match "already won".
Every match is loseable, of course it is - but if he plays well, then he should win.
Yeah, I remember on live text on the Beeb website, one cocky reporter put,
'The question is not whether Andy will win, but by how much'.
This was just after his first Aussie open final, and we all know what happened next!

Me too - I always saw this one as the mountain to climb.
I was impressed though by the way Andy kept it together yesterday. He was obviously shattered physically and finding it mentally tough - especially in the third set - but he found something from somewhere when the chips were down and came through in that final breaker like a true champ
If he doesn't know how to recover now he never will - but fingers crossed that the organisers will see this as the fascinating match that it could be and put it in the evening slot. pplllleeeeeese

I hope it's a night match coz I think Andy feeds off that energy. If Milos is to lose I'd rather it were to Andy than anyone else.
ljs, I've not been dreading it, I've been looking forward to it immensely. I'm just happy and relieved that Milos made it to the fourth round like he did in Australia last year. It's just a pity he gets a top 4 player, I'd rather he got Tipsy or someone like that.
I'd put my money on Fed/Fish being the night match. I just hope they don't put Andy on in the heat of the day again - last up in the afternoon session is probably the best we can hope for.

Great - I really hope so. One of the commies was saying that Borg never ever played a night match at the US and never won it.
I'm sorry and apologise to Milos fans but I still think he's nothing much more than a serve, as has been proven when that serve is off. He wins by bombing, not intelligence or finesse - which he may......or may not.......develop. His backhand is a liability (I hope Andy plays on this if he can get into any rallies on the Milos serve). So I truly don't think a player deserves to win through serve alone, apart from which it's boring. I'm dreading this because if Milos' serve is on song, even Andy will find it difficult to return I fear and unless he can hold his own serve better than he did last night, it's going to be game over.
That apart, TBH I'm not expecting much now from this tournament for Andy. I think he needs 3 things if he's to actually win it........determination, guts and desire. I'm sure he's got all 3 in spades but whether that will be sufficient to combat the physical deficiencies in the heat I'm not sure. I think I hope he gets a night match against Raonic. Seems to me the other forces are all playing "who???"!!!! Whereas Andy seems to have a load of banana skins just when he could do without them. I know he has to beat whoever, but why can't he have who???ever like the others seem to.
Sorry to sound negative but I'm just very very frayed at the edges. GOOOOOOOOOOOOO ANDEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

well Im biased too , and I think Andy will win 2morrow to be honest .
Im going to assume pabbers , that when you said intelligence , you meant ... on the court intelligence ... agree that he doesnt have alot of finesse on court , well , not yet anyway.
But Milos is a very intelligent guy , hes doing his studies while continuing with his tennis . Both his parents are engineers , so hes got good intelligence genes lol

May not be the best time for most of us but should be to Andy's advantage, though will likely still be a tough match and Muzzah will need to be on form.
Thank goodness for Andy's sake he gets an evening match, after a ladies double, the Williams v/s the Russians, should be a good match and great crowds. Andy thrives on pack Stadium. Good luck Andy, hope you are well rested. You've had a bad one ,a good one a bad one hope this is a good one for us. Go Andy I'll be cheering you regardless of time difference.

Tomorrow is the busiest day of the working week for me. My eldest 2 kids are going on a school rewards trip to Alton Towers and have to be at school for 7.30 am plus I have to go on to work and travel in the afternoon to do a presentation, so there is no way that I can be awake for this match.
I do believe that Andy will prevail, I just hope that he is suitably recovered from Saturday and feeling fully fit.
Like you J, I also have to be up for work at 6 and Tuesday is a busy day for me BUT it's the second week of a slam and I can't miss any more of Andy's matches. Sooo I think I'll adopt your plan, substituting wife for husband but will have to set the alarm to wake myself up. Still all about Andy focusing and holding on serve.
Pity that exquisite shot making by Andy constructing lobs, beautiful shots... gets a point and... so does a Milos ace.
There should be a way of scoring an extra point when the tennis is at a certain level...
Oh well. Back to focusing.
C'mon Andy!
C'mon Andy - two nice easy service holds here.
Sallydaisy

5-3 to Andy Murray in the 2nd set. He could get another break here; Milos is getting down on himself for missing some shots in that game.

I am enjoying this. This year Andy has worked on power, so it is nice to see him play one of those matches where he does not give his opponent the pace he is desiring and uses his tennis brain to put his opponent into uncomfortable positions.
C'mon Andy!

Getting the on-court interview with Brad Gilbert.
Go BG.
"Andy saying that he set out to mix things up to try and break the serving rhythm of Milos.
So important to focus on every one of his own service games.
They heard the rain was coming at 9.30pm so they were glad (and both agreed) to start at 7.30pm to try and get the job done.
Cilic has a solid game and Andy knows he'll have to work hard to win the Quarter-Final."

Hi Everyone!
What a great performance by Andy. I really believe that he is almost unbeatable when he shows that form, just as he did in the Olympics. Brilliant to watch. If Andy can play like this until the weekend he has every chance of claiming that elusive first slam. Very gracious words from Milos afterwards. He recognises that there was little he could do against such an awesome display of tennis. Well done son. Bring on Cilic!
What a great scoreline to wake up to. So... not unlike the Star Trek films... the even number matches seem to be the best by far for Andy...
Except of course, the Final is the 7th game!
But first... Cilic!
I cannot believe it! Went to bed early although couldn't really sleep much. Got up earlier than planned for the match, switched on the TV just in time to see them shake hands at the net!! Delighted Andy won but really gutted I missed it! I gather the match was brought forward due to threat of rain. At least our boy had a good match though so that's the main thing. Hopefully I'll get to see the next match ...

What Milos doesn't seem to realise is that Andy tailors his game to his opposition whoever they may be. Andy has the talent to do that - many players don't - including Milos who seemed totally devoid of ideas.

What Milos doesn't seem to realise is that Andy tailors his game to his opposition whoever they may be. Andy has the talent to do that - many players don't - including Milos who seemed totally devoid of ideas.
I think though that Milos might develop that aspect of his game and if he plays Andy a few more times we might see things work differently. It happened with the other players when they first met Andy; took 'em a few matches but some managed to suss out how to play him. Not all of them win (Lopez being a good example!) but Raonic is still young and that serve gives him the opportunity to develop other areas of his game whilst knowing he can win a lot of matches by currently getting a lot of 'easy' points on serve.
Here's what the guys had to say in their post-match pressers!
Andy - link to interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ae5KLkA7IQ&feature=g-u-u)
Milos - link to interview (http://t.co/Hqr62qu)
Please has anyone ogot a link to any transcripts of the pressers.
Also, did it rain after Andy had finished demolishing Raonic?
