Just read Bird Brain's presser, and he says Andy won cos of the wind!!! Liking him even less..

Q. Did he adjust a little bit better, you think?

TOMAS BERDYCH: Well, yeah, Andy was better in this part definitely, and that's why he actually took the win.

Yeah, this is the bit that i'd heard:

berdych: "I think that our sport deserved to have some rule or if the conditions are like that that"

No play because of wind? Feeble.

Awesome, Andy! Was so afraid about this matchup that I had my heart in my throat getting up this morning to find out the result. Deeply happy! One more match, Andy!

BTW, 'Murray Makes It To The Final' isn't cool enough. How about 'Tornado Andy Blasts Birdy Off The Court' or 'Gales Blow Andy Into Finals' or 'Birdy Lost In High Winds' - something like that.

I agree with you AA, I like your suggestions!! They sound much more apt!! :cheer:

That was some match-well done Andy!! :cheer:I never liked berdy& I like him even less now.:grrr:

Monday final isn't good for me--I leave on holiday early Tues morning--5am checkin!I'll be lucky to get any sleep-but Andy's worth it.:trophy:

Great win andy in shocking conditions against a dangerous opponent (and that's just the wind)!

His confidence must be really starting to build now- 2 finals in a year!

Surely this all bodes well for a grand slam soon....

'Awesome Andy gives Tomas the Berd'

'Andy blows Berdy off the court/ Andy puts the wind up Berdy'

'Controversial replay of point no 'Andy cap' for Muzza?

(etc)

Well that's more like it .....

'Awesome Andy gives Tomas the Berd'

'Andy blows Berdy off the court/ Andy puts the wind up Berdy'

'Controversial replay of point no 'Andy cap' for Muzza?

(etc)
..... but I'm not so sure of those ^^^

I was thinking of something like ...

Monsoon Murray blows Berdy over ...

Stormy Scot sidelines Czech

Blustery Brit blasts Berdy to bits

Muzzah thunders by Berdy, bye bye

;)

The current one IS temporary - I was too delighted with the win to think of summat else.

Surely it was Andy who was hadicapped by the wind as the break back for Berdych in the 1st set came about due to the wind blowing Andy's cap off. If it wasn't for the wind Thomas it would have been 3-0 instead of 3-1

About the presser from Berdy just a thought, but
the wind was there when both players were playing yes
I mean it didn,t stop when Andy played then start again when Tomas was hitting did it ,
I just think that a great player will adapt, and that is the difference. different conditions
will suit different players ,but you can't just rely on one aspect of your game to see you through,
that is why the top people are at the top is it not
just sayin:shrug:

That's what Johnny Mac said too. That he didn't have a plan B whereas Andy has lots of plans up his sleeve. He said he should have hit his serve in with spin with less on it like Andy apparently did.

There were 3 things that beat Berdych today:-

a) Andy Murray and his talent for working out how to beat players with heavyweight hitting
b) the wind which really does affect Berdy's game because of his serve ball toss and style of play
c) Berdy's brain - because his reputation for mental midgetry is based on fact not fiction

He stomped all over Andy in Set1 (just as he did Federer for 3 sets) but couldn't keep it up and therein lies the reason he lost. He managed to keep going against Fed but I think that was one of those days when a player lifts himself above his normal game. I thought Andy would work out what to do and he did; just as I thought at some stage that Tomas would fold mentally - which he did.

It's often the case that a losing player suddenly sparks into life as they're about to lose; self-defence, pride and a 'losing so I don't care what I do' approach accounts for much of that. But in the main it's a last ditch effort and easily deflated.

Andy played a clever tie-break; he played every point, made Berdy play more points than he wanted to and clung on until he won. I'm a fan so I'm a bit biased but I think Andy knew he could win this match but might need time to work out how. He was mighty frustrated to begin but he didn't really get down on himself and upped the gears in sets 2 and 3 when it mattered.

He is such a rare talent - I really hope he can go the distance and win the thing.

Good report Sallydaisy.I just had a good feeling about the match although had butterflies in the tummy all day
I think Andy is responsible for my vodka bottle being half full this morning!!!!!!!!!!! One point though the commies said how sporting Andy was that when his hat blew off he replayed the point watching the replay Berdych could not have got to the ball.
Going to have to alter my plans for the coming week, so if need be I can stay up late Monday night, I am lucky I had Sky Sports put on my TV a few months ago.

Great report Sallydaisy.

Andy has always had a great tactical head since he was a kid according to his mum. What he hasn't had until recently is the ability to stay positive when he's going down, and not blame his corner. Lendl has been a great asset in this respect, very controlled and not taking any **** from Andy as his previous coaches have. Whoever he gets on Monday is a class player and he's going to have to draw on all his positivity and fight as I can't see his being out in front the whole way.

Go Andy!!!

Whilst I agree with your comment about Andy's tactical ability, Helen, I'm afraid I have to disagree with your assessment of Andy 'blaming his corner'. I don't think Andy has ever blamed his corner - certainly, he's shouted at his corner but it would seem to me he has been blaming himself not his team. This is Andy's time - I'm convinced he will win on Monday whoever is on the other side of the net. Go Andy!!!!!

Excellent analysis Sally. I also think the keys to victory were Andy's mental resolve, his flexibility to make changes to his game particularly after the first set and the decision to minimise Unforced Errors. I also think Tomas found the on-going mental energy both players had to expend to copy with the wind took its toll - that must have been exhausting for both players but Andy toughed that out better. I would agree that Berdych's high ball toss did not help him but he also did not adjust, or seem to be able to adjust his serving. Andy had a first serve percentage of 74%. In a normal match we would be over the moon at that percentage. Andy was making sure he got it in as often as possible. The UEs were

Player First second third fourth Match
Birdy 19 12 11 22 64
Andy 11 4 2 3 20
Andy winners 37 Birdy winners 45 "Balance" Birdy -21 Andy +17

Nine UEs in the last three sets in those conditions shows incredible focus and adapting to the conditions and even allowing for the fact that Birdy's style of play should produce more winners and so more UEs, the final winners totals were 45 to him and 37 to Andy.

The match also reminded me that in a five setter "it ain't over til it's over". After the first set Andy won 15 of the next 18 games (6-2 6-1 and 3-0) but one serve break and they are back to 3-3 then a Tie Breaker and a couple of points here or there and suddenly after all that dominance the match could have been a one set shoot out. Before the start of the TB I actually thought that Andy could do it if he turned round at 2-4 - but not 1-5 or 0-6 and indeed Birdy missed the point to make it 1-5 - as he started on the difficult side of the court, playing into the wind. It was nerve-wracking when they turned round again at 6-6 but Andy's resolve did the job.

The best thing of that win was that after the first set Andy accepted the conditions for what they were, made the necessary adjustments and got on with it. Very impressive and well done!

Andy was the opponent who realised that to turn wind into win you transform the d into determination :)

That's what Johnny Mac said too. That he didn't have a plan B whereas Andy has lots of plans up his sleeve. He said he should have hit his serve in with spin with less on it like Andy apparently did.

The problem being of course that Berdy doesn't have a serve with spin........nuff said.

I think if Andy had been asked (had Berdy won) he too would have commented on the conditions and how unfavourable they were but he'd have had the grace to say that Berdy had adapted his game whereas he hadn't. Berdy hasn't done himself any favours by being so grudging. Still, who cares, because Andy won :cheer:.

Let's hope he has enough mental energy in the tank for the final. Because I think mentally is where it's going to count most and where the slam may be won or lost.
