I am fighting back the tears right now. I am so proud of Andy and so happy for him and the whole team. I feared the worst after the fourth set but Andy showed true champions spirit to right the ship and dominate the final set. He's deserved one of these for so long after working so hard and making sacrifices many of us wouldn't dream of. What a legend this man is, a true inspiration to anyone to keep working and trying and never giving up.

I was so tired and now I'm wide awake! So happy for everyone who has been involved in his progress. What did he say at the presentation - were there tears? So annoyed that I didn't get to see it live - hope the BBC comes up with a repeat of EVERYTHING now.

traveller7
11-09-2012, 01:26
I had the belief I think we all did however nervous we got I had a feeling he would do it, and as Petchy said he did it in 5 sets against Nole which just proves he fought for this it wasnt a 3 set win easy it was a slog out there, Nole wasnt injured or played badly it was a fantastic match and he just played better and in that last game some very close calls on his side.
So proud and bursting with joy - watch the naysayers jump on the bandwagon saying 'ah i knew he would do it' yeah whatever we are his true fans and so glad to share it with you guys and gals made it so much easier.

Its a long while since I have been on here with quite a difficult year for me at work but it has not dimmed my enthusiasm for Andy and like all of you I have been up till silly hour tonight to see in history even if I had to keep fairly quite as the rest of the house is asleep (and of course I shouted in his gold medal too). Its just so fantastic that the 76 years of waiting is over but no doubt the media will still bring out a stat like that for Wimbeldon. Next year we want that one put to bed.

I'll also say, given my comments on last years BBC sports personality which for some were controversial for here, that Andy will clearly now be a serious contender for SPOTY but what a year he has chosen to reach these peaks. I think Britain needs about 10 sports personalities of the year this year. How can we narrow it down to just one.

I'll try to get back on here a little more but I am sure you all have been doing really well keeping the flame burning and have been well rewarded tonight.

No matter how many times we have rolled our eyes at Andy's dodgy hawkeye challenges, Andy won the 2 most important challenges of his life in that last game! :)

Stat from 5 live. Nadal, Federer and Novak all beat players who had not won a grand slam before to win their first GS title. Andy had it tougher as he never got that opportunity!

Hi Fiona! What a wonderful match and magic from Andy to win that.
He didn't let it up to his box - actually he was very cool about it all.
Would love to see the photo!

Has there ever been a more humble celebration of grand slam victory than Andy's? There was no collapsing to the knees or prostrating oneself on the ground or ripping open the shirt or even tears. Just acknowledgement of a difficult job very well done.

What a joy reading twitter is tonight?

Amazing performance.

To lose a two set lead was a huge blow. But Andy showed huge mental toughness as well as
brilliant tennis skills in winning that 5th set.

Now that he has at last got his first slam, I'm sure he'll go on to win more.

It is indeed, as Andy has often said, an era when some of the greatest ever players are playing.
But I'm sure Andy now realises that he is one of them.

A great champion.

Crawled out of bed but such a wonderful feeling to greet the day with our man a Grand Slam Champion. Words can't describe the way I feel. Everytime I woke up between 2.15 and 6.45 was the first thought to come into my head. Now maybe Andy has silenced his critics but who cares. I must remember to cancel the subscription, it was pretty much a waste of money; it was fairly OK for the AO but not for the USO, Sky nicked all the good ones.

I have never found a free livestream that showed replays - if you find one please let me know for future reference!

Got a great stat here: Federer has only once won a Grand Slam final against an opponent with more major victories than Andy did on Monday. And that was a 35 year old Andre Agassi! Go Andy!

just watched the last set, and its even more phenomenal second time round, i dint hear how nuts the crowd where going at the time the atmosphere was crackling ( i must have been caught up with terror)
and i have to say nole has went up in my opinion, people bang on about nole and his chest banging and the antics of his team but i doubt there are many players who could have been more magnanimous or gracious in defeat

Still revelling in Andy's win :) although still haven't caught up with my sleep. Been a mad week, leaving later tonight to take daughter to Uni in England, but great week. Lots of people being quiet about the match but then they have a lot of words to eat! Still seems a bit unreal having waited for so long but looking forward to whats ahead!

Well its the end of a wonderful week and a new chapter in the Andy Murray journey is beginning. What a journey it's been thus far. That AO 2010 loss to Fed has always felt like the biggest disappointment because I always believed he would have soared from that point but the truth of it is, he had to take this journey with all it's heartache and disappointment in order to reach the place he was at on Monday night. He could not have claimed this title in any better way IMO, taking the lead then weathering the storm of Nole's comeback only to step up and give all of himself in that final set. He's taken the knocks and it's only proved to make him stronger.

Had to read the last paragraph of "Coming of Age' again when Andy talks about all the training and hard work saying that it will all be worth it one day if he can say that he's a Grand Slam Champion. I'm so looking forward to the next book (there has to be one surely) in a few years and the opening line should be "I can say that I'm a Grand Slam Champion". Got a feeling he will be a Multi Grand Slam Champion by then. ;)

I have to say I agree J, I have always found Nole gracious in defeat. He always congratulates his opponents warmly at the net and in his speeches. He also applauds good shots during play.

I can't be doing with the chest banging but you have to hand it to the guy, he can be a class act when he wants to be.

Is anyone else in the situation where various colleagues, neighbours and associates suddenly declare that they've always believed Andy would do it one day ????

After all the negatives that I've had to defend, after all the derogatory comments and snide remarks, suddenly they are all Andy fans !

I just smile smugly and welcome them to the Andy fan club :welcome: - I've been there a long time

Yes I've been experiencing that too. One friend who has always been anti-Andy (ABE incident) said to me after Wimbledon that Andy was just not up to beating 'The Great Man"on the big stage. Imagine how pleased I was to run into him after the Olympics!!!!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it! By this Tuesday he was even saying that he was pleased that Andy won the US Open.

Seriously though, it is good to hear more and more positive comments about Andy. He's certainly let his tennis do the talking!

Although, commentating on the Berdych/Monaco match in the Davis Cup tonight she has just said how unlucky Berdych was to have to play Andy in such windy conditions. Her inference being that the outcome may well have been different in different conditions. Was the wind only blowing on Berdych???

It's weird. She also said she thinks Andy is more talented than Novak awhile ago. It's really back and forth with her. Hmpf.

Sorry, I quite like Djoko but the timing of his time out annoyed me intensely - and it's not the first time he's done it. Besides which I haven't yet forgiven him for retiring from the Cincy final last year when Andy was winning.

I think we have to distinguish between what opponents do "to themselves" and what they do "to others". Chest thumping is to themselves. Clapping an opponent's good shot is to the other. Nole is mostly very good to the other. I actually think the time out in the match was genuine because the guy is not used to hurting like that before his opponent.
Andy sometimes tends to shout "come on" when his opponent misses a shot. I take that to mean "now stay focused for the next point" not "I'm telling you that was good news for me". It could easily be misinterpreted.
As for A. Croft, I know it is difficult at times, but we clearly do not respect her, so ideally we should not be wasting energy on her. Easy to say I know, but so much to bask in right now, she is not worth bothering about!

My own opinion of Novak is that he is obnoxious when he wins, but a perfect example of good sportsmanship when he loses. Therefore I would love to see him lose much more often. Preferably when playing against Andy or Rafa ;)
