Canada plays France in the first round next Feb. Probably in Vancouver or Calgary (disappointingly for me who wanted it in Toronto). First time Canada's been in the top group since 2004.
How come Kazakhstan are in the World Group?
They certainly slipped under my radar.
DC site shows they qualified for the World Group in 2010 by beating Switzerland 5-0 (http://www.daviscup.com/en/results/tie/details.aspx?tieId=100014752) (no Fed) and beating Czech Republic 3-2 (http://www.daviscup.com/en/results/tie/details.aspx?tieId=100014752) in 2011 to make last 8 thus retaining their place.

No pressure for Canada then. Tsonga, Monfils in the singles; Benny and Llodra in the dubs.
Canada's team comprises Milos, Vasek Pospisil in singles and Danny, Frank Dancevic in dubs.
In other words, Canada has no chance.

I knew they were covering the States vs Switzerland, but not Spain vs Argentina. Obviously this new DC TV coverage deal for them has worked out well for them
They only seem to be showing an hour or so of Spain vs Argentina before the GB match, but I guess it may be on Eurosport player in full.

no, I doubt we'll win the dubs , but never say never. Have my doubts about Milos vs Tsonga too , but if he plays like he did 2nite then its possible !!!!
I've just been listening to Fed's comments after his loss yesterday. He blamed the surface (clay) and the altitude! But they were playing at home and chose the venue and the surface! :rolling: :rolling: :rolling:
Typical of the Fed. From the highlights I saw last night he was outplayed by John Isner who played a great match.
Go USA. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
Surely Fed and Stan would have had a say in the playing surface. I'd have thought that they'd have chosen an ordinary indoor surface which is probably Fed's best surface. As for altitude Fed should be used to playing in Switzerland. He doesn't blame the altitude when he wins Basel. :rolling: :rolling: :rolling:
USA have gone up two sets to 1.
And USA win! They win the tie against Switzerland 3-0!
Congratulations to Jim Courier and Team America - 3-0. Hard to believe. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

USA did soooooo well! I was really cheering them on. They play the winner of Canada-France and when asked who'd they prefer they laughed and said Canada coz it's not far to travel for them. Can't believe how quiet Jim Courier was. Hardly a peep from him. Very respectuful but you could see how much it meant to them.
It's not often that I cheer for the USA but well done Team America! I agree RL - Jim Courier certainly showed how to win with grace.

Shame Canada lost the dubs. Did well to take it to two tiebreaks. But both were not serving well. Lots of second serves. Team France just better. But, good experience for Milos for the next DC tie.
Well done Team USA!

I can't believe what Fed said there! Even by his standards that's really awful. I bet Stan could kill him.
Fed just not a good loser - too long being on his own pedestal! Wonder how long it will be before he pulls out of Rotterdam injured and all the fault of the altitude and the clay. Because I'm being too cynical though
Really bad form by Federer to make those comments in front of his own team-mate! I didn't see too much of the tie, but from what I saw of Fed's match he played terribly and was very slow around the court. Stan's match was much closer and he had chances to win against Mardy - he tried his best.
Well done Team USA!

Even by Fed's standards that is an extraprdinary comment. Are they intending to defend their Olympics doubles title together I wonder - if I were Stan I would certainly think twice about it after that comment!
I hope he was joking (altho the press seems not to think so) and that he said he was playing well while Stan was not in a sarcastic way, 'cause if not that's a low blow even for his standards.
Not to say that yeah, Stan didn't win vs Fish on Friday, altho it was a very close match with someone ranked ABOVE him. Not like his own match vs Isner...

Fed's a SORE loser. We all know that.
I guess we just didn't expect that low a comment towards his teammate
Fed's comments just show a lack of consideration to a team mate who must be feeling bad about his losses to Fish and the doubles. His thoughtless remarks certainly will not help Stan to once more feel good about himself and his game.
doesnt surprise me in the least
I see that neither Fed nor Stan are playing the dead rubbers today - there's a surprise! What about all Fed's worshipping Swiss fans that have paid good money to come and see him?

No surprise at all. Fed's probably in Rotterdam by now preparing for the tourney this week. He'll want to put this weekend's disaster for Swiss tennis behind him.
Maybe Swiss tennis fans do not worship Fed quite so much after this weekend's disaster for him and Swiss tennis. I've one question and that is why did the Swiss choose indoor clay and not just a plain ordinary indoor court on which the Fed excels?

Wanted to play on USA worst surface prob. Which is kinda dumb, when you've got Fed on your team, Waw who isn't so rubbish on hard either, and you're coming out from the Oz Open played on hard too... But good for me (and for USA) they chose clay ;)

Isner just won an exciting tiebreak against Tsonga, putting him in the lead by two sets to love. Can't really see Tsonga coming back, but you never know - he came back from 0-2 against Fed at Wimbly last year.
Haha, just after I typed that the French commies said the same thing!

That's interesting - I bet he doesn't get the flack from the Serbian press that Andy gets from ours. The word on the block is that Andy would have played if they could have found a suitable clay court venue in time - not sure whether or not I believe that but I suppose it wouldn't have been too much out of his way to make a detour to Britain en route to Monte Carlo.

May just be a rumour of course and would have been a bit problematic anyway! Andy was coming back home at the weekend before travelling to Monte Carlo but don't think we can really criticise him for not making an appearance at DC.

The semis ended up as I expected really but some good matches along the way! Isner's win over Tsonga turned out to be pretty significant as did Berdy's success over Tipsy. Three breakers there but disappointing that Janko couldn't extend the match! of course a battle royale when he beat Steppy 9-7 in the 5th earlier.

What chance a world group playoff next September between GBR & Canada? Could happen if we beat Russia and Canada loses to Spain! :sofa:
Are you sure? I don't think we'd play each other until 2014.
Pretty sure - if we beat Russia we go through to a world group playoff against one of the 8 first-round losers in the WG (as Belgium did this year after beating us)

Because Tom Tebbutt said so in a tweet earlier today. This year they hosted France in Van. because San Jose was the week after and so they wanted to only be a few hours away on the same coast. He said they'll do the same thing in Feb.

RoastLamb

It won't be in Montreal coz they just had it there last week. Another place on the west side of Canada is Calgary. Or Edmonton. They don't like to pick Toronto because we don't have a suitable indoor stadium unless they use a hockey arena and it hosts Rogers Cup so they like to share the tennis.
If they did come to TO you're more than welcome to come over and stay with me and we can go together.
Spain have named their team for the final next week (http://www.daviscup.com/en/news/articles/ferrer-leads-spanish-charge.aspx).

Granollers/Lopez made the early running but Steppy/Berdy really turned it around and should make for an exciting final day! Ferrer will be tough in the 4th rubber though. There's certainly been a few good contests here.
Good to see the Czechs infront going into the final day... no pressure for Berdy tomorrow! Should be a very tough match for both of them
The Ferret is thrashing Berdy at the moment.

Ferrer certainly on fire but it's pretty much one way traffic at the moment,Berdy can't seem to put David under much pressure. of course Ferrer spent far less time on court so will be fresher.
The worry for the Czechs will be that the same will apply for the last rubber re time on court.

Woooohooo. The Ferret looks so happy too. Commentators/presenters reckon Almagro is the favourite to win the next rubber and hence Spain winning the cup. Andrew guess who was one of them - SG's friend Mr Castle. He gets around. BBC, Sky and now Eurosport. You can't get away from him.
JAMES4578

Indeed certainly some entertaining tennis here! Nico possibly a bit tentative but Steppy really up for this! Czechs couldn't capitalise on chances for 2-0 in 2nd but easy hold to keep the pressure on!

Steppy has had 4 set points but hasn't been able to pull the final trigger, must be strong now in the breaker! An emphatic breaker as the czechs don't drop a point, has to be said though that Almagro was a bit tight! Spain with it all to do now!
Always think Almagro has a ranking that flatters him.

The last 'live' tie is on a knife edge ...
Sam Querrey batting for the USA has just levelled the 5th rubber after taking the 2nd set 6'3.
Thiago Alves held serve at the beginning of the 3rd; over to Qtips.
It'd be a right shocker if Brazil beat the USA on their home turf.
Canada beat Spain but the last rubber is being played so Dancevic is out again against Albert Ramos.

Phew, this USA v Brazil tie could go right to the wire unless SamQ can wrap it up in the tie-breaker.
He leads 4'6, 6'3, 6'4 and now it's 6'6 in the 4th an the tb.
Alves is playing his heart out but Sam gets the break to serve at *4-2.
EDIT: all over and the USA have squeaked through into the Quarter-Final.
Here's how they'll line up:-
Canada (c) v Italy
USA (c) v Serbia The tie will be in BOISE the first weekend in April!
Argentina (c) v France
Kazakhstan (c) v Czech Republic
(c) = that team has the choice of ground.
USA has announced their tie will be in Boise.
You didn't really doubt he'd win did you?
;)
never doubted it for one second .
Was just announcing it with Canadian pride , even tho I know alot of you guys dont like Milos, I just couldnt help myself.

Frank lost in straights to Ramos. I think Ramos was the best Spanish player this weekend. He's got lots of potential.
Of course Castle couldn't criticise Fed, wasn't quite the same with Andy though! An enjoyable match today though pity it didn't go the distance as Stan was getting something going. Berdy though seemed to have a bit more in the tank today.
It will be interesting to compare how he commentates at the next tie when Andy is missing.

I wonder where they'll host the 1/4 final vs Italy at home. Hope it's in Toronto. Fingers crossed.
