WOW! Massive well done to everyone in Team GB, including Super Coach Leon :) What a performance from Wardy and Evo today. Andy said he would be available for selection in September - and he has to play, surely. But what a dilemma for Leon - who do you leave out?

Really really hope Wardy and Evo take this on now for their singles rankings. They played fantastically, shows they can do it, they have the game - they just need to start doing it week in and week out. And surely entry to Wimbledon for Evo this summer??

Congrats everyone!

Brilliant result - well played all Leon Smith's team! Especially pleased for James Ward who proved he can come through in tight situations - not forgetting Dan the Man of course.

Shame tennis is so low-profile in this country that we fans are forced to squint at tiny screens when surely there were TV channels who could have changed their schedules and scrapped repeats, old films or whatever else happened to be filling slots and attracting low ratings.:grrr:

Fantastic! What a day, and what a weekend...!

I think if we were honest with ourselves, most of us didn't think the guys would be able to pull it out of the bag today - despite the brilliant result in the doubles yesterday, after two gruelling five-setters on Friday which didn't go our way, it was a huge ask and I was worried that Friday's results would be hard for James & Dan to recover from.

But how awesome were they!! I always felt Dan could win, but James Ward really impressed me today. His serving was phenomenal - I haven't seen any stats, but there were a lot of aces (each of which earned £200 worth of tennis equipment for Coventry primary schools - thanks LTA!) and lots of service winners. Plus his body language was different, he seemed really up for it, and he was using the crowd, which I haven't seen him do much of before - very well done.

And Dan? I was concerned he'd be nervous, because once James had won all the pressure for the tie was on his shoulders, but as he walked out with Leon he was laughing and looking incredibly relaxed. He played superbly - some of the shots he was coming up with were genuinely awesome - I don't think I've ever yelled as loudly in my life - and it looked all the way through like he just knew he was going to do it.

Huge congratulations to Team GB - they seriously earned their stripes this weekend, and did the whole country proud. Superb performance, and it was a real privilege to be there in person to see it!

 :cheer:

To the rest of the forum group we shared this weekend with - thank you so much for your company - winning the tie was fantastic - sharing it with you all made it even better!

An absolutely awesome day as GB overcame the odds to beat Russia. Must say hopes weren't when James Ward went down 5-2 in the 3rd but he fought back tremendously and even though he eventually lost that 3rd set against Tursunov was so strong in the 4th and 5th when the serve was functioning so effectively. Meanwhile Dima seemed to feel the pressure and of course there was that rude gesture at one point!

Once we'd levelled thought we had a good chance and once Dan had that first set under the bag was just in control. Such a great atmosphere and many exciting moments! Of course so much better sharing it as part of a block booking! A great weekend and so glad we had the icing on the cake!

Once again thanks so much to Sally for making all the arrangements and to everyone for their company over the weekend!

Just read the news as have been away for the weekend. Heard that we won the dubs last night, but now having read of Wardy's epic 5 set win and Dan's impressive straight set win, am very very pleased! What a great effort from the boys. GOOD JOB LADS! Am so pleased that we are back in the playoffs, and hopefully with Andy we can get into the WG!! Upon reflection:

On Friday Wardy was 2 sets up and lost in 5;

On Sunday Russia was 2 matches up and lost in 5.........

say no more.

Andy has once again been vindicated..........the boys didn't need him. They were strong enough to come up with the goods when it mattered and proved to themselves and everyone that they don't need anyone to lean on. This was great for their confidence.

Leon was vindicated as regards dropping Jamie Baker in favour of Dan. We'll never know how Jamie would have fared but Dan was the man yet again. If Andy had played with the agression and fearlessness of Dan at the same age, with the added advantage of Andy's work ethic, I think he'd have been where he is now a lot sooner and possibly even further. Just wish Dan could capitalise on his performance this time.

Fina
08-04-2013, 08:18
^^But Pabbers, wasn't Andy at number 4 in the world when he was 22, the same age as Dan is now? I think it's a very different scenario, being the hunted, always having to play consistently well, day in, day out, week in, week out...Dan has a way to go yet.

Rather than any negative slants, I'd like to say - great performances - and well done to Leon, getting the best out of all the team

Well done everyone who was there cheering the team on yesterday and helping to get us through!!

It was great to be there on Saturday but as the match was so one sided and in line with rankings I guess it was a lot less exciting than yesterday but I'm still glad I went.

As delighted as I am with this performance from GB, I am equally as irritated by it.

Dan Evans is not a top 400 player, or a top 300 player, or even a top 200 player. Both Ward and Evans should be in the top 100-150 at least.

I agree the performances yesterday would suggest Ward and Evans should be much higher ranked but the way I look at this both lost their first games so if this had been a normal tennis week that would have been it tournament over and they would have scored no rankings points for the week. To get their rankings up they will need to win consistently and get deep into their tournaments at what ever level these are at. Losing first day will keep their rankings low. I'm not taking anything away from their Sunday performances they were great but consistency is what is needed for rankings to rise and while I have not looked at the detail of their rankings I assume such consistency is not shown regularly.

Murray rocks
08-04-2013, 11:32
Wow, had an awesome time, sorry didn't get to see you guys tho. But my word british tennis seriously on the up. Nobody laughs at us no more. Was so proud of Dan and James yesterday friday could easily have drained them but they just didn't allow it tohappen. Fabulous.

Interesting how DC affects players in different ways - some higher ranked players often seem to struggle whereas others with much lower rankings, and possibly therefore lower expectations, (like Dan & James) bring their best to the table at such times leaving us all wondering why they can't play this way consistently on tour and get their rankings where we feel they should be. I would love to know the thoughts of both boys in this respect.

Yes, Leon definitely picked the right team and I think the team spirit showed. They played for eachother and their captain as well as for GB and it was great to see.

I think it was Jeremy B (or the other commie) who said James served 30 aces against Tursenov. That's some serve he has when it fires like that. I do hope this tie has given him more confidence for the future.

pabbers
08-04-2013, 13:19
^^But Pabbers, wasn't Andy at number 4 in the world when he was 22, the same age as Dan is now?

Indeed - so maybe he could've been #1 by now........think you misunderstood my post perhaps.

Yes, Reef, I think you've hit the nail on the head when you said they were playing for each other and the team - that's clearly what spurs them on. Maybe just playing for themselves is not incentive (frightening....) enough.

What a weekend of tennis! I am really struggling today in a job that requires me to talk quite a lot as I have no voice left!! But boy was it worth it :big grin:

I really feared for James yesterday - he was inconsolable on Friday and looked really tired on the sidelines on Saturday. When he lost the 3rd set yesterday, many of us thought the writing may well be on the wall. Then during a tight service game at the beginning of the 4th, I heard him saying 'come on' to himself after every point he won ...... and I thought to myself 'he still believes, and if he still believes, I am not going to lose hope'. After that he went from strength to strength and I was so happy for him and the team.

....And then there was SuperDan. Now Evo has always been a favourite of mine, being a Midland boy and all and I just love the way he plays. As soon as he walked onto court he looked as relaxed as anything I thought 'he's going to do this!'. I felt really confident, like he was the higher ranked player. I never doubted he was going to win ... he never gave me chance. He didn't put a foot wrong. Absolutely brilliant! Evo was born to play DC and I really hope he gets a chance in the next tie because boy does he deserve it .... but so does Wardy. What a tough decision for our captain.

And talking of our captain ... I honestly believe that Leon Smith is the reason our team continues to go from strength to strength. I watched him closely throughout the weekend and he never stops working - kneeling down at the players' feet, coaching them, encouraging them. What a contrast to the Russian captain who sat expressionless in his chair all weekend! I have never known any other GB captain instill such spirit into the team. So massive kudos to Leon and also to the support team who helped to get those 2 boys back on their feet after Friday.

As many of you know I am a passionate DC supporter. To me, nothing can beat it, nothing is more exciting. Well that tie was up there, probably the most exciting I have ever been to. And was there a top 10 player in sight? No, there was not, and did it matter? Not in the slightest! That is what I love about DC. That and the chance to watch and cheer with fellow supporters. So thanks everyone for the company and those regulars who weren't able to be there - we missed you! Roll on September, bring it on!! I am soooo happy today :yahoo:

Dan Evans and James Ward seal remarkable rally and send Russia packing

The victory jig in mid-court was self-conscious but there has not been much in Davis Cup results in recent years for anyone in the British game to have considered it an idea to practise the steps.

Yesterday at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, it was time to dress up in our glad rags and have a bit of a knees-up. For the first time since 1930, Britain won a tie in this storied competition having lost the first two rubbers and did so in a style that was quite phenomenal. James Ward and Dan Evans produced performances that ought to have transformational effects on their careers.

On Friday evening, there was sadness in their eyes and weariness in their limbs; both had lost five-set matches they believed they ought to have won. The next day, they were invigorated by the sight of Jonny Marray and Colin Fleming playing doubles of extravagant élan and, buoyed by its uplifting virtues, decided to come back yesterday and play like stars.
They did

Britain defeated Russia 3-2 to secure a place in the play-offs for the World Group, the September opposition for which will be determined at a draw on Wednesday. Leon Smith, the young captain, has not been able to lead his team in this kind of company before but with Andy Murray already insisting he will play in the autumn, Smith can reflect that a stirring in his gut that he should go with the often recalcitrant Evans for this tie was a positive rumbling.

Entering the third day, the Russians had the upper hand. Only one of Dmitry Tursunov and Evgeny Donskoy needed to come good and they would probably be allowed a vodka on the flight home.
Instead, it was the British who were celebrating.

Ward defeated Tursunov 6-4, 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in 3½ hours. Ward, the cabbie’s son, had not played better in his life, against someone who had won seven titles on the ATP Tour and built a very decent reputation for durability and resilience.
The roar he let out as he served the final ace out of reach was profound indeed.

(Evans) His display. which brought a 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 victory, was bravura, his best ever, laced with confidence, net attacks, beautiful balance, fine defence under the peppering Donskoy gave his sliced backhand and completed to an incredible din.
“It was a joke that we were behind on Friday night,” he said. “It was like, ‘How did that happen?’ ”

We all felt much the same yesterday.

An Historic Achievement - A Personal Perspective

Sitting here less than 24 hours on and almost 2000 miles away from the Ricoh Arena, I am still totally and unashamedly drunk on adrenalin. Wearing my DC T-shirt, I am completely incapable of focusing on either work or domestic matters that will have to wait a further 24 hours.

Walking to the Arena on Friday morning with the occasional snow flake interrupting my journey, I have to say I was unsure what to expect. But what ever my variety of predictions may have been, none of them came remotely close to the drama that was about to unfold.

I have to confess that I had never seen Dan Evans play. He went down a break in the first set, and then simply grabbed hold of Tursunov's shirt tail and clung on... and clung on ..... and clung on for almost 4 hours. I said on numerous occasions - to anyone willing to listen - when Tursunov moved away on the scoreboard, that he would run away with the match from that point. I must have sounded like a broken record because each time, Dan would fight back and the cycle would repeat itself. In truth, I never really got the feeling that Dan would win, but the performance was truly inspirational.

And that inspiration certainly rubbed off on James Ward who at 2 sets to love up looked "comfortable" in every sense of the word. Donskoy never really had a look in and Wardy was in complete control. By the back of the third set however, it appeared that Wardy's exertions were beginning to take their toll. I thought I sensed a leg injury but apparently that was just some slight cramping up. It was clear however, that he was half a yard slower to the ball and Donskoy fought back. Going into the 5th set, I feared the worst and where James found the energy from to reach 6-6 all, I will never know. At the end, he was distraught - a broken man, I feared and there was no chance of him regrouping for a second singles rubber. Oh Ye of little faith.

Walking back to my hotel, I was in a state of emotional confusion - inspired and exhilarated by the tennis that I had seen, yet completely deflated by the 0-2 scoreline. We deserved so much more. In so many ways, it would have been easier (emotionally at least) if we had been stuffed in straight sets in both rubbers, but to have been so close and yet still come away with nothing seemed like an injustice of the n'th degree.

Saturday's doubles was the mismatch that most people had expected. Some of the tennis was fabulous to watch and almost "exhibition" in nature, but it was all over too soon and by 3pm, we were left wondering what to do with ourselves. We wanted more. At least the "old ticker" had the chance to relax on the Saturday and recover somewhat from the exertions of the previous day.

The lack of tennis however, was more than compensated before by an evening shared with new friends, many of whom are from this forum, exchanging stories and opinions about the sport that we are all so passionate about. But I don't think any of us could have predicted that, with all that had gone before, the drama was only just beginning.

I had spoken briefly to Leon Smith on the Saturday night and requested 2 three set victories for Sunday, conscious of my impending flight back to Spain. It didn't quite work out that way, but quite frankly - who cares. James had clearly shaken off the emotional disappointment of Friday's defeat and came out firing. But Tursunov hung in there and in the middle of the match, appeared to have turned things around. At 2-5 in the 3rd set, Ward looked a spent force both physically and mentally. Somehow, perhaps through the amazing crowd support, he dragged it back to 5-5, and although he went on to lose that set, the small resurgence seemed to give him a second wind. Carried along on a wave of emotion and a mutual admiration between crowd and player, Ward conquered his Everest and achieved what none of us had dared to speak of throughout the match. The atmosphere was just wild.

Decisions, decisions. I seriously considered at that point, missing my flight back to Spain in order to watch the final rubber. But head won out over heart and I set off for the airport. It wasn't until I landed in Alicante that Steven's text confirmed to me the greatest comeback in 83 years. My shriek of delight was greeted with some strange looks from fellow passengers, but I didn't care. I was too busy re-reading the text - just to make sure I hadn't misread it.

So I just want to add my congratulations to the entire GB Davis Cup team on their historic achievement. There was undoubtedly a massive unity about the squad and a real sense of togetherness and self belief - and that has to reflect on the management.

If we happen to draw Spain away in the World Group playoff, I will see you all over here in September.

I was proud of James and Dan on Friday...valiant losers. Colin and Jonny did the business, as expected, on Saturday and was so proud of them.
:GBflag::GBflag:

On Sunday, like most of Davis Cup supporters.....just dared to hope and my shouting and comments drove supergramps to the pub to watch Rugby League. Wardy was magnificent..could hardly believe what I was seeing. He just gave his all and I was thinking of you all in the arena roaring your support.
:yahoo:

It was then nerve wracking knowing that if Dan could do it again we would win. Well, if I couldn't believe what Wardy did Evo just flabbergasted me. Having seen him play and knowing that he has some sublime shots I did dare to hope. He was just unbelievable and it was unbelievable that he won in straights sets. But we had to believe because he did it!!! The atmosphere in the arena must have been fantastic and I was a bit sad that I hadn't been there.
Glad you all witnessed history and had a wonderful weekend.

Now we await the draw and it will start all over again. Bravo everyone for your loyal support.

Thanks to you Sally, and all the others from here that made me feel so welcome. It was one of those rare situations, where you can meet people for the first time and yet still get the feeling that you have known them for years.

What an amazing weekend of tennis and so lovely to meet up with everyone again, after 2 1/2 years in the wilderness! Haven't really done any work today as just been reading all the comments and blogs and still pinching myself that Dan and James managed to pull off the impossible! What an atmosphere us lot created as well, Tursunov won't be calling the British crowd too polite again, ha ha!

Andy was constantly texting Leon during the matches on Sunday ... extract from The Times. (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/tennis/)

Andy Murray adds to the buzz after Great Britain’s Davis Cup victory over Russia
Neil Harman (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/public/profile/Neil-Harman) Tennis Correspondent
Last updated at 7:24PM, April 8 2013

The messages arrived at almost every change of ends, little notes of support, inspirational words and impulses as Andy Murray watched the Davis Cup tie that he wasn’t able to play in become one that prepared the way for a sparkling return later in the year.

The phone of Leon Smith, the Great Britain captain, was buzzing constantly on the third day of the 3-2 victory over Russia in Coventry that secured the nation a place in tomorrow’s draw for a World Group play-off for which Murray has promised he will be available.

“The main theme was how proud Andy was of the boys, the way they were playing and the job they were doing,” Smith said. “You could see how pumped the team were to know that he was following the whole thing from America and what they were doing meant a great deal to him.”
