Federers' award is purely historic has shown hardly anything of anything this year!!! They are going to have problems when he finally gives up!
Happy with Delpo, hope he comes to collect it in person. But disappointed that federer won the fans favourite. Murray was in second though :)

Certainly doesn't seem logical to give Federer the Sportsmanship award again when he's hardly been much in action ,whether his fault or not-another winner would've been more fitting. Well done to Del Porto and Pouille for winning comeback award and Most Improved.Suppose can't expect the fanatics to take that into account in the Fan's awards-glad Andy 2nd though ahead of Nadal,Djokovic and Nishikori. Well done to Jamie/Bruno for coming 2nd in doubles category and apparently fairly close,as expected the Bryans won for 12th straight year.

Fed also doesn't have Olympic gold for singles. I hope 2017 is Andy's year for finally winning the Oz Open. Fingers crossed.
Saw a picture of the top 10 on the ATP website and it reminded me that milos was now at world number three. I was so happy and excited at the finals when it seemed likely though he couldn't comment on it when he lost his match as at the time if kei would have won his semi then it could have been in question again. A new world number 1,2,3,4 I was disappointed that cilic wrote 6 on the camera after his match. I understand it was a huge achievement for him but the reality was monfils dropped it through injury. It was still a fresh wound for me. Hoping monfils can play well again next year and that we will see nadal moving back into the top 5 and Delpo into the top 10 lol. That may be a stretch but can't hurt to hope.
If Delpo remains injury free for the whole of next season, I will be amazed if he doesn't finish 2017 in the top ten.

Federer is unquestionably a fantastic sport and top bloke. But surprised players didn't go for someone else this time. Del Potro maybe.

Love to ask players that voted what sporting behaviour Federer exhibited (in 28 matches), that Stan (61), Nadal (53), Murray (82) didn't.
Perhaps he doesnt say many naughty words, I would love the contents of a swear box used by Andy!

I'm not really clued up on the whole Next Gen Race to Milan thing, but given that Sacha Zverev is now third in the Race to London and ahead in the Race to Milan by a huge margin, presumably if he qualifies for London (which looks highly likely) he is eligible to play the "proper" year end finals instead of Milan?
Or have a week in Milan followed by a week in London?

Sadly I think there is alot of truth there , as much as we might not want to face it
I agree. I have felt that almost since I started watching tennis. It has got to the point where I can't take the sport seriously. The ITF's acceptance of excuses that in any other situation would be treated as the joke they are. Performances that just don't ring true, etc, etc, etc. I find it depressing.
There was a comment in the press about athletics after the recent event in London "I am getting fed up with watching a race, and having to wait several years to find out the actual winner".
I am not sure that in any sport at the moment you can have any belief that the results are not tainted. It would be naive to assume tennis is exempted from that.

Fabio Fognini has been hit with a suspended ban from two Grand Slams - one of which must be the US Open - for insulting an umpire at this year's US Open tournament.
The Italian has also been hit with a fine of £72,690 after he was heard using extremely derogatory and misogynistic language towards Swedish female umpire Louise Engzell.
https://www.tennisworldusa.org/tennis/news/Tennis_Stories/48179/fabio-fognini-gets-conditional-suspension-for-2-grand-slams/
He does need the punishment. That was awful
Certainly Fognini needs to be punished as his behaviour went beyond what was acceptable.
During a discussion on Sky between matches I think it was Henri Leconte who said that his behaviour was unacceptable and he should be banned from two grand slams. He remembers John McEnroe behaving badly during a match - the chair umpire reacted to this by saying game set and match to his opponent.
It's really time umpires and the ATP were much more strict on their punishments. Leconte also said that the ATP were reconsidering the ban from slams. This is no example to set to the younger players who must get the impression that they can do exactly as they please and get away with it.

Was big fan of the Woodies too, Men's Doubles at Wimbledon still the best of 5 (though been best of 3 on occasions with backlog) but hasn't been the case in other slams for some time. Whilst was rooting for Henman/Broad at Olympics have to say the Australians were a class above .
Shot clocks and reduced warm ups very likely to be introduced in atp tour, possible next season. I like the reduced warm ups but think rather than a clock they could enforce the current rule as it stands. Kermode also said he will look at med time outs and loo breaks.
No plans to change the scoring, thanks be, but at this year’s next gen finals players will be told to use a towel rail on court rather than ask ball kids to handle sweaty towels which can also slow down.

:hmm:
So, they're going to ignore the Futures (ITF) events in terms of any ranking points.
I wonder mechanism will then be in place for the 14/15yr olds starting out, to get into Challengers in the first place because at the moment it's the points they earn in Futures that eventually raise them up the rankings to qualify for entry into Challengers.
From 2020, ATP Ranking points will begin at the ATP Challenger Tour only
ITF have produced a video on their website aimed at the players explaining the transition to the new system, including the composition of the ATP Challenger draws. Use of a wet towel and a darkened room are recommended while viewing it. Basically 25K Futures events entrants will earn ATP points and there still will be ranking points available to players in the lower ie 15K Future events (though ITF not ATP ones). Therefore access into Challengers qualifying will be available to them:- "The 4 qualifying spots are made up of 3 players with the highest ITF ranking that didn't get in to the main draw and 1 wild card. The main draw has a further 4 reserved places for players with the highest ITF ranking that isn't directly accepted through their ATP or ITF ranking." Simple really.;)

Officials definitely need something! They are not allowed to speak to the press and currently have no way of receiving any support or back up. It's awful!

Disappointing in a sense but think a move was expected this time, London and the O2 done well to have it so long (even if one of the most successful hosts). Turin one of the better options (personally not the best time of year for me now anyway though enjoyed going to tour finals in the past)

Telegraph (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tennis/2019/04/27/andy-murray-enters-justin-gimelstob-argument-dont-see-can/) - Exclusive: Andy Murray insists Justin Gimelstob has to go – 'I don't see how he can hold position of authority at ATP'
Gimelstob has resigned with immediate effect ... per Christopher Clary (https://twitter.com/christophclarey) 6hrs ago on Twitter.
Justin Gimelstob tells me he is resigning, effective immediately, from the ATP Board of Directors. Will not stand for re-election on May 14th. "I’ve become too much of a distraction and a liability." Our story here:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/01/sports/justin-gimelstob.html
Andy wasn't alone in his reaction to Gimelstobs' conviction.

Players need to speak out. Justin Gimelstob has been convicted of a violent assault. It simply can not be possible for anyone to condone this type of behaviour and worse support it. In any other business or sport we would not be discussing this.

There could be further fall out ...
According to The New York Times, Gimelstob travelled to the South of Spain, where Novak Djokovic, the Players Council president has been training before @MutuaMadridOpen (https://twitter.com/MutuaMadridOpen), to offer his resignation in person to and to thank him and also to apologuze for what has happened.
... and there's always Ben Rothenberg chipping away.

Will Gimelstob still be allowed on the grounds of tournaments while completing his anger management rehabilitation? Will Djokovic take responsibility for this corrosive chapter in the council’s history?
And how voiceless/gutless is the rank-and-file of the ATP that the only two players who spoke up publicly (Andy and Stan) are players who had each won three Slams? Was the perception that Gimelstob alone held keys to a chest of gold really enough to buy everyone’s silence?
Tyler Green @TylerGreenBooks (https://twitter.com/TylerGreenBooks)Why doesn't the WTA ban Gimelstob from its events? Surely it's an obvious step: after all, why would WTA want a confessed violent misogynist on the grounds of it's tournaments?

It's a thought I've had, as have several others. WTA owns a set of keys to its tournaments just as much as the ATP does. If they don't feel comfortable with Gimelstob on their grounds and around their players after his crime, no reason they couldn't make the first move.

Gimelstobs' statement per resignation:

Responses to it on twitter include the following:

Words/phrases not included in Gimelstob's statement: "I'm sorry." "I was wrong." "I behaved in an unacceptable way." "I caused pain and harm to others." "I own my mistakes and must suffer the consequences." Just a lot of glossy PR bullspit. Yuck.
Per Chris Clarey of the NY Times - for those who like reading legal stuff.
;)
As more players & insiders call for Gimelstob's ouster, his attorney sends letter to ATP Board & player council emphasizing that Kaplans' statements weren't made under oath or subject to cross-examination. Letter attempts to contextualize court use of term "legally unprovoked"

Glad Gimelstob has finally gone but has not done the image of the sport any good.
BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/48130738) - Marco Trungelliti: Tennis Integrity Unit backs whistleblower for 'courageous stand'
Glad Gimelstob is gone. Never liked him.
THere was a letter from Wawrinka in the Times today. An article about it https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/sport/morals-are-declining-in-tennis-stan-wawrinkas-letter-to-the-times-f9qsnxjb8 quotes
“I feel compelled to express my views on this regrettable period in our sport,” Wawrinka wrote. “This episode has left many players, myself included, concerned about the direction tennis is heading in.”
Wawrinka, 34, believes that Gimelstob should not have continued with his administrative duties when charged in December. Despite taking a leave of absence from his commentary work for the Tennis Channel, an American cable network, Gimelstob remained at the ATP as a player representative. The board voted against removing him. Gimelstob then played a key role in ousting Chris Kermode (https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/chris-kermode-to-step-down-as-atp-president-at-end-of-year-6xxqk0r55), the ATP’s executive chairman and president. In March, Gimelstob voted with fellow player representatives David Egdes and Alex Inglot against renewing Kermode’s contract at the end of the year.
The decision to end Kermode’s reign has baffled many players as, under his stewardship since 2014, the tour has experienced record prize money and commercial growth. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal voiced their concerns about a lack of consultation from Novak Djokovic, who as president of the player council was an ally of Gimelstob in the plot to remove Kermode.
It does not sit well with Wawrinka that Gimelstob continued pulling strings while facing a judicial process for assaulting Randall Kaplan, a former friend, last Hallowe’en. Kaplan alleged that he was punched in the head and face more than 50 times. His wife Madison claimed that trauma suffered as a result of witnessing the attack caused her to suffer a miscarriage.
“There is no place in our sport for those who behave like Justin,” Wawrinka wrote. “The lack of responses from people involved in the game, particularly at the beginning of this saga, when he was charged last December, was alarming. This is a situation where silence amounts to complicity.”
The controversy has exposed troubling conflicts of interest in tennis. Likely to come under further scrutiny is the influence of IMG, an agency that manages players and tournaments, yet has a seat on the board through its senior vice president, Gavin Forbes.
A quote from his letter
Many players feel that they were not represented properly throughout the last few months, during which so much has happened politically. I agree with them. I do not want to be associated with anyone who played a part in this, let alone be represented by them. I want to be represented by people with clear, strong ethical values.
Some people feel that the governance structure of the ATP does not work, that it’s too cumbersome, impossible to represent both players and tournaments. But I fundamentally believe in this system. The fault lies not in the structure, but in the calibre of people within it. There are numerous conflicts of interest to address throughout the whole sport.
Tennis is a selfish sport. Inherently people are too concerned with their own interests. This inevitably causes difficulties in the management of the tour, which have escalated in recent months.
At the end of last year, we saw record results for the ATP and men’s tennis. Now look at us. This political chaos is caused by a handful of people with personal agendas and, more disturbingly, with no alternative plan to follow up on their concerted plot to remove Chris Kermode, the executive chairman and president, earlier this year.

Roger Federer admits it is unlikely he will appear in the Davis Cup again. On Gerard Pique's recent comments, he said: "I have never met him, so I don't know what we need to work on" Also, Novak Djokovic calls for talks to resume over ATP/Davis Cup merger
Roger Federer has admitted it is unlikely that he will ever appear in the Davis Cup again, only two days after competition investor Gerard Piqué expressed hope that he could persuade the 20-times grand slam champion to play in the revamped team event.
When plans were unveiled last year for the change in format, organisers hoped that absent top players would be enticed back by a new one-week finals event at a neutral location. Encouragingly, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have all since offered their commitment for the first edition in Madrid on November 18-25.
Federer, however, remains unwilling to end his self-imposed Davis Cup exile. The 38-year-old has not played in the competition since 2014 — the year after he helped Switzerland win…
Novak Djokovic cannot participate in the ATP 500 events in Vienna or Basel as he is playing Rafael Nadal in an exhibition in Kazakhstan on October 24 Because of this, it means Nadal is now guaranteed to replace Djokovic as world No 1 on November 4 regardless of results in Paris
I'm finding the ATP site a bit of a pain these days - couldn't get the rankings to work, not even using different browsers. Also, the dates on the schedule of the Antwerp event in the Pro tennis live app available on the site, are wrong - again!!

for once, I'm siding with Nick. He didn't have to defend the tournament (although he would then need to make up the points), he doesn't need to do Press and PR for the tournament, if he was injured beforehand then why would he turn up just to play half a set then retire ? He must have genuinely thought he was fit to play.
He gets enough bad press without spectators turning on him. One thing I'll almost guarantee, he won't go back next year !
Indian Wells cancelled.
https://bnpparibasopen.com/coronavirus/
Hard to take in. In all the years I've been following tennis, and that's a lot, I don't remember whole tournaments being cancelled, especially the day before it is due to start. Selfishly, I'm terribly disappointed, but I suppose this is for the greater good long term. Fasten your seat belts folks. There could be a bumpy tennis season ahead! (Or worse, no tennis season)
As soon as the Challenger version of Indian Wells finishes, they suddenly announce this week's one has been cancelled!!! I find that to be a bit weird. Yes I believe so. Lots of people retire down there. The restaurants are packed between 4-5 p.m. for early bird dinner - I kid ye not.
So it makes sense in a way to cancel there as the elderly are at a much much higher risk.

9. Berrettini (-1)
10. Rublev (+2) Top 10 debut for Schwartzman and Rublev.
I'd dearly love to see Andy Murrays' name back in that list ......

Tennis Channel to have TV rights for ATP, for folks watching tennis outwith the UK.
In 2021,@TennisChannel (https://twitter.com/TennisChannel)
will have complete live television and digital coverage of all ATP Masters 1000, all ATP 500, most ATP 250 events and season-ending Nitto ATP Finals for the first time.

While this is good news for us over the pond, it is a little frustrating for me.
I have always had a subscription to Tennis Channel. Unfortunately the last couple of years they have added Tennis Channel Plus, which as a positive adds more live matches but the negative is it costs more money which I am loathe to spend.
They also started to put the more popular matches on Plus, thus forcing people to pay more for the popular players. Not all the time but enough for it to be annoying.
I do always manage to find stream but it makes me wonder if I should even keep my regular Tennis Channel subscription.

OK so app. Sasha Zverev has made a woman called Brenda pregnant - and they are no longer "together". And the news has made his ex VERY MAD at him. Can't make this stuff up...

ATP Cup news
These are the 12 nations set to compete for the ATP Cup - if their top player commits. Switzerland therefore a doubt given Federer's recent comments. South Africa next in line.
Great Britain is currently at 21st on the rankings so hard to see them getting in.
