This thread is to discuss the ATP in general and ATP players who do not have their own thread.

There is a separate thread in this sub-forum to discuss the ATP Rankings.
Andy's Rankings are on a different thread in Andy 'off-court'

I think Fed will win another slam - Wimbledon or the US Open. It's amazing how motivated he still is despite of all he's achieved - he has said in the past that he'd like to play until his mid-thirties so retirement may still be a way off yet.

RoastLamb

I can totally see him doing a Sampras and winning a major in his thirties when everyone has written him off. Then he'll retire on a high point.

Yeah I can definitely see that happening. He'd have to avoid Rafa though as I don't think Fed will beat him again in a slam.

I really hope Andy will have got his name on the board by the time he's in his thirties.

hfwardhouse
04-11-2011, 17:58
You need to make sure it's the YTD rankings that you have selected as the points value is different for both.

Linda
04-11-2011, 17:59
You are looking at the YTD rankings. Change it to the rolling ATP rankings using the drop down box and you will see it. (The ATP default on their site has changed from the usual rolling rankings to the YTD rankings, which I think has confused quite a few people!)

Think WTF will be a strange affair this year - almost last man standing. Rafa's going to be physically the freshest but will he have overcome the mental battering of his losses of late?

Linda
11-11-2011, 23:51
I agree, Alis - I think we can see all of the top players finding an excuse not to play Paris next year. Of course both Fed and Rafa can skip one Masters now, but I'm sure they would like to skip one in the summer with the added pressure of the Olympics next year - but they may find that it is better to skip Paris.

Alis
12-11-2011, 10:53
This really does seem to be a very odd decision. Paris has arguably the best atmosphere of all the Masters series - it would be so sad to see few of the top 10 players there next year. Why can't they push the whole autumn schedule back a week? There seems to be a natural gap between the end of the US Open and the beginning of the Asian swing - would it not be possible to lose a week then or am I being too simplistic?

I think we can talk about the ATP calendar, but otherwise there is a de facto split between the top four's year and the years of other players which as far as I can see is more pronounced than ever.

Nole, Andy and Roger are down as having played 17 and Rafa as 18 tournaments i.e. an average of 17.3 tournaments. *

If you look at the core year - they all played the slams of course, only Andy played all the Masters, and the other 3 missed one.
500s - All four just played TWO!
Other - Nole played Belgrade (obviously), Rafa played Doha and Queens, Andy Thailand and Queens and Roger Doha.

Top 4 matches 2011 (Ws + Ls)

Nole 71 (27 GSs), Rafa 79 (26 GSs), Andy 65 (25 GSs) Roger 66 (24 GSs)

The next tier (O2 finalists) have played more tournaments - 21, 22 or 23 tournaments, averaging 22 tourneys. They appear to have played a lot of matches as well, but key is the number of Grand Slam matches**:
Ferrer 70 (but only 18 GS matches, Berdych 68 (GSs 13), Tsonga 71(GS 17) and Fish 63 (GS 14).

The next tier, the 9-20,have played 19-29 tournaments., an average of 23.5 tourneys. Injuries clearly played a part in such a spread of tourneys played.

What is clear is that, as I mentioned in a previous post, the GS dominance of the top four brings a points and rankings advantage, but at a physical cost where even fulfilling the rest of the "core" year is made more difficult. Their tennis year is a "depth" one as they literally go deep in the important tourneys they play.

As you go down the list, there is the tendency to play more tournaments as players go out earlier. Essentially they have a "breadth" year playing more weeks of the year but not at the intensity of the top four.

Andy's year
We can see Andy's year apart from the O2 finals and it really is striking how black and white it is.
If we count "deep" as Winning anything and making Semis or better of Masters and GSs, of the 17 tourneys, there are 5 Ws. There is 1 F and 5 Ss (all at Master or GS level). Total: 11 out of 17

Apart from two exceptions, Paris Q and Madrid R16, the other 4 tournaments are first match exits (remembering the bye system) Rotterdam 32 Miami R64, Indian Wells R64, Canada R32

Looking dispassionately at this, apart from a post-AO blip, Andy had a fantastic year from the rankings point of view. In 15 out of 17 tournaments he either went really deep or had first round exits!

Summary
It seems that if nothing changes, the top players are going to be increasingly absent from most of the lower ranked ATP tournaments
4*2 = 8 ATP 500 appearances by the top 4 NOT spread out and there are 11 ATP 500 tourneys
5 250 presences and there are 42 ATP 250 tourneys (if you include Dusseldforf).

The ATP has to think carefully about the year(s) otherwise two tours (admittedly coming together at the Masters and GSs) are existing within the supposedly one tour.

* Not including Davis Cup matches, which adds to the total of course.
** Not analysing things like five setters which would also be interesting.

This is why i dont understand why players dont retire when at the top of their games! yes it's tricky, difficult to end while playing well, but, YOU have to take a look at your age, your body. what you have done so far......then say, Good career, been all over the world winning titles time to move on with life!

IVAN LJUBICIC TO RETIRE .....

From (http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2012/03/Features/Ljubicic-Set-To-Retire.aspx) the ATP website:

Ivan Ljubicic (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/L360.aspx) announced today that he will retire from the ATP World Tour after competing in the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Tournaments/Monte-Carlo.aspx) in April.

The Croat, who will turn 33 on 19 March, has been ranked as high as No. 3 on the South African Airways ATP Rankings. He also won the Davis Cup for Croatia in 2005, a bronze medal in doubles with Mario Ancic (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/A385.aspx) at the 2004 Athens Olympics and 10 career singles titles, the biggest coming at the BNP Paribas Open (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Tournaments/Indian-Wells.aspx) in Indian Wells in 2010 when he beat Novak Djokovic (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/D643.aspx), Rafael Nadal (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/N409.aspx) and Andy Roddick (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/R485.aspx).

Ljubicic was also elected to the ATP Player Council, serving six years from 2002-08 (the last two as President) and to the Board of Directors in 2008. “It’s never an easy decision for any professional athlete to retire,” said Ljubicic.

“I look forward to the next stage of my life. Tennis has given me so much and I want to continue to stay involved and contribute in some ways.”

Hi David

Per your post we moved Dolly to the ATP General thread as it's not quite 'news' and we don't yet have a thread entitled "tennis players song club".

Although perhaps we should?

Bryan Bros? Caro Woz? Andy's Autograph rap? Those cringy but funny clips the Jenson Bros used to do from the broom cupboard at Roland Garros???

Despite various meetings being held behind "closed doors" rumours* are emerging about changes to the ATP Calendar from 2014 onwards. There have been various tweets

Seems the Paris Masters is likely to be moved to February. The WTF will take place earlier than now - probably straight after the Far East swing in October. After the WTF there is potentially a new series of tournaments to be held in South America but none will be mandatories.

As already noted Wimbledon is willing to move back a week so there is a 3-week gap between the 2 Grand Slams in Paris and London.

So far no news on whether the WTF will stay in London after 2013 when the contract expires.

* based on the following

Just a note to remind peeps that if they want to check ATP Rankings you'll need to click on the top header in the list. The ATP, in their wisdom, now have the RACE RANKINGS as their default which isn't relevant to player entry lists and seedings.

One or two journalists have been caught out by quoting wrong information and it's also affected a tennis tournament in the UK.

From twitter:

Steven ‏@GBtennis (https://twitter.com/GBtennis) I don't think it's a good idea that after the USO, the ATP now bring up the race rankings as a default if you click "Rankings" on their site

Today sees the start of 2 new Rules agreed by the ATP competitions committee last year.
See full details here. (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=114868#post114868)

TIME VIOLATIONS
From 2013, on both the ATP World Tour and ATP Challenger Tour, a time violation between points (25 seconds) will be penalised in the first instance with a warning. For the second and all subsequent violations, the penalty will be a fault for the server and a point penalty for the receiver.

Currently, the rule is a warning and then point penalty for both the server and receiver.

NO-LET TRIAL
The ATP Board also approved a trial elimination of the service let on the ATP Challenger Tour only, for the first three months of 2013.

It'll be interesting to see how the first of these new rules is actioned.
Apparently, there's been some instances already today where it's been carried out.
Robredo just got called on it and Davy/hanescu (likely Hanescu) were warned about it in their doubles match.

Linda
01-01-2013, 12:05
Although someone has reported on another forum that Dodig was taking 30 seconds in his match and wasn't called on it - so I guess it will still be up to the umpire. (nb what is the difference between a fault and a point penalty?)

Sallydaisy
01-01-2013, 12:25
Although someone has reported on another forum that Dodig was taking 30 seconds in his match and wasn't called on it - so I guess it will still be up to the umpire. (nb what is the difference between a fault and a point penalty?)
I'm sure it'll still be inconsistent ..... umpire's aren't robots! But they do all have stop watches.
I hope it'll start to sort things out since the players clearly feel it's needed.

I think the difference is as follows:-
If a player is serving and has already been warned then he'll get a fault the 2nd time.
If that's on his first serve he'll automatically only get his 2nd serve.
So, he's got (a) chance to put his timing right and (b) not lost the point completely.
If it's on his 2nd serve he'd automatically lose the point but not as a point penalty that time.
If the server gets another time violation then he'd get a point penalty straightaway.

For the returner it's a warning first and then a point penalty.

Originally both server/returner got a warning and then a point penalty. It seems the players themselves have come up with the new option but I've not found any reports on why they think it will work better.

Linda
02-01-2013, 10:16
Well, I saw the new rules in action yesterday and it wasn't nice. I was watching the Lopez-Kubot match. Feli had already had one warning for time violation, although he didn't seem to be taking a long time to serve (and I don't think he is normally an offender in this respect). Then when he was at the baseline preparing to serve at 5-6 0-40 the ump said 'time violation Mr Lopez. 2nd serve'. Feli argued with the ump saying he was already starting his service action and was not over time but the ump wouldn't change his mind (of course they never do, something Feli has never learned in all of his years of arguing with umpires). It didn't seem fair to me - considering it was set point and he wasn't going to be more than a second over time. People on other boards are pointing out that there is no visible clock so the player doesn't know at what point the ump has set his watch, so doesn't know precisely when the time will be up. I think they're going to have to look at this again.

Sallydaisy
02-01-2013, 20:31
Apparently Monfils came in for a time violation today and he was not at all happy about it.

The players are going to really feel it in a Grand Slam and 5-set match because a few of them use a bit of extra time between points to cool down after a long rally or in the heat as in Oz. If they're going to stick this they probably need to have either a longer change of ends (in certain tournaments) and/or agree a longer time e.g. 30secs rather than 20secs.

And what happens if one of them notices a broken string just as the guy the other is about to serve?
How do they 'stop the clock' and allow for a racquet change.

Without a clock on court the players have no way of knowing what the umpire expects.

pabbers
02-01-2013, 21:14
Surely there'll still be umpire's discretion because they're often a bit more lenient after a long point or in a long match.

But are they secretly planning a 2nd career as a boy band (http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/2804/57644754847827517390020.jpg)???

That is slightly at odds with reports from the JMDP camp today ... as tweeted by Carole Bouchard of L'Equipe who has done some translating from other tweets in Spanish and been talking to reliable sources.

Official reason why Troicki isn't forfeiting money/points for tournaments after Monte Carlo (where he allegedly refused blood test) is...

...because there are 'no automatic ‘subsequent disqualification’ for refusal cases.

Ben Rothenberg ‏@BenRothenberg 18m

I'm not saying I think Troicki deserved no sanctioning, but that his refusal was significantly mitigated. Expect ban will shorten on appeal.

Another baffling aspect is that ITF let Troicki keep playing after his refusal, including two slams. If refusal that bad, shouldn't happen.

Last Troicki thought: if player refuses test, DCO should *immediately* call supervisor and have consequences made crystal clear to player.

26-07-2013, 03:37
The problem with a blood test taken 1 to 3 days later is that say if he was taking any drugs they could be out of the system by then so IMO that negative blood test taken later doesn't automatically prove innocence

Don't know what to make of this really. Could be ITF or Troicki at fault or both

pabbers
26-07-2013, 08:31
Don't think such behaviour (if true) on the part of the ITF in not fully explaining the position to Troicki at the time would hold up in a court of law - I know that's not the situation here but if he's going to appeal I'd think that has to be taken into account. How can you allow someone to end up in such a position without informing them of the full facts/risks? A doctor would be negligent in not explaining all the risks to a patient before carrying out a procedure if that procedure had a bad outcome for the patient. Whatever Troicki's reasons for refusing, if his appeal is successful I'm sure he'll make sure in future that he knows exactly what the rules are and that he complies with them to the letter and if he doesn't then it's definitely going to be his own fault. As things stand IMHO he ought to be given the benefit of the doubt but whether that happens or not, this will serve as a warning to other players of the potential consequences of refusal. Just a pity it couldn't have been done sensibly.

Just read about this.
I agree that someone should of informed him of possible outcomes and /or they should of gone to him if he was unwell to take a test as a test days after is negligible most if not all drugs would of been passed through system by then.
An 18 month ban does seem harsh, but tennis as a sport is hot on this kind of thing as all sports should be.
I hope its all sorted quickly and he is innocent for his and the sports sake.

I found this whole situation quite baffling until I read the full transcript of the tribunal's decision this morning, which is at http://bit.ly/13h92Xq

I have a similar extreme needle phobia and can imagine (especially if I was already feeling ill) rational thought completely going out the window in the blind panic such things induce in me (even writing about this makes me feel a bit nauseous), leading me to wishfully clutch at any hint that it might be ok to avoid the test even if it was far from a complete assurance, or even if the hint was not really any kind of assurance at all.

So I suspect the tribunal's best guess as to what really occurred may be right (i.e. that he wasn't told that his illness was enough to allow him to miss the test but convinced himself that he had been) and it is hard to see how they could have let him off without creating loopholes for real cheats to exploit. But I also feel desperately sorry for Viktor.

Feeling sorry for him does of course assume that he wasn't doping and trying to avoid the test for that reason, but the phobia coupled with illness could easily be enough to explain the panic/irrationality aspect in my opinion, so I certainly wouldn't assume that him not taking the test is automatic proof that he had something to hide.

On the other hand, if the doctor was as experienced as is claimed, surely she should have been aware of the way people with an extreme phobia can react and made it absolutely clear to him that it wasn't acceptable to miss the test rather than leaving any room at all for doubt, however irrational that doubt might have been.

I am not saying she had an absolute responsibility to do this (and it's the kind of thing you might expect an inexperienced doctor to fail to understand), but after 15 years working in that area, you would think she would have known what might be going on in his head, have known the consequences of missing the test and have made sure he fully understood the situation. i.e. I'm not saying that I believe she made it clear that it was ok to miss the test (I think that was probably genuine wishful thinking on his part generated by the irrationality brought on by the needle phobia and exacerbated by the illness, since it makes no sense that it would be ok to miss it), but I do think she should have made it 100% clear to Viktor that it definitely wasn't ok and it is pretty clear even from her own statements that she did not do that.

Feeling ill is no reason for not having a small amount of blood taken.Patients in hospital who probably feel far worse than Victor have often to have daily blood tests. I know he gave urine, but there are more things found in a blood test than in a urine test. So I have no sympathy for him, it is important that blood tests are taken regularly, and no excuses from the players as to why they can't have it taken.

I read the Troiki hearing report (thank you Steven).
Not happy with the result. I think a stern warning or six months would have been reasonable plus mandatory testing at every event he enters for x months.

PS Cilic http://www.changeovertennis.com/report-marin-cilic-failed-doping-test-in-munich/?utm_campaign=report-marin-cilic-failed-doping-test-in-munich&utm_medium=rss&utm_source=rss

the Serb gets 18 months (for not taking a drugs test), Cilic according to that article gets three months (for failing a drugs test).
One thing is for sure - this won't exactly improve Serb-Croatian relations! If Cilic plays the USO and gets drawn against Nole or Tipsy, better make sure it is not on a tiny outside court as the rival fans could get quite heated!

From the above article,
Brett said the ATP should follow the example of the WTA Tour, which employs a company, Usana Health Sciences, to provide "clean" supplements. Any player who subsequently fails a test due to one of these products is entitled to compensation of twice her current annual salary, up to $1m. So why don't the ATP do the same?

* There's the following note on the ATP page but it doesn't quite make sense because if I add 800 to Rafa's points he has more than Nole so I've left it as above until something is clarified.

Rankings Note: The Emirates ATP Rankings as of Monday, 9 September include all US Open results except the final, which will be played Monday evening. The winner of the final will add 800 points to his total. Novak Djokovic will remain World No. 1 regardless of the outcome of the final.

EDIT - THESE POINTS ARE CORRECT AND INCLUDE THE USO FINAL ONES!

Yes I thought Rafa would now be no 1 but according to rankings today still no 2?!

The ATP page has been edited. The table in my previous post is correct including the USO points.
Very close at the top and Rafa has 0 to defend to the end of the year.

It makes you wonder just how many other players treat their entourages badly. Not perhaps on this level, but being at the beck and call of somebody who can fire you in a moment must put so much strain on peple who at first sight appear to have glamorous jobs.

Just hope Tomic Jr. can free himself from dad and then be judged on his own merits. AFter reading this doubt he is up to much as a human being but he probably has to be given the chance.

I actually found reading this article quite disturbing. If even half of it is true, Tomic senior is a really nasty piece of work - the sooner Bernard gets rid of him the better and even then I don't hold out much hope for him!

I have this afternoon seen another problem with the 25 seconds rule. I watched Rafa v Kohli and both were playing quickly, but the ballkids were dreadful. Each time the servers were asking for balls and couldn't get them. Rafa is always very considerate to ballkids, but even he became quite cross. Rafa was given a warning, when he had had to wait for the ballkids to get him the balls. He had a conversation with Fergus Murphy about it. Later, again Rafa had to wait (despite saying, come on, come on) for the balls, but was then given a serve penalty for time. It was absolutely unfair as Rafa had been playing quickly but was kept waiting for the ballkids every time. I expect he will mention it in his presser.

Well, this is really interesting. You remember Sean (Shaun?), who used to be a member here, was hard of hearing so played with deaf ATP. But here is a report of a deaf player on the main tour: http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20130927000718

I love Rafa but he could maybe think about cutting out some of his ticks and that would also save a bit of time. It drives me nuts seeing him flick at his nose, hair and ears before every single serve. And he could maybe stop bouncing the ball so many times? I don't think it's all the ballkids' fault. Having said that I don't know how he serves so well when the sweat is literally pouring off his head and down his face.

I remember Shaun. Apparently its not just the ability not to hear that makes it harder for deaf people to play tennis, but the hearing problems can affect things like balance too.

Mathias Bourgue update. Since his heroics against Andy at Roland Garros he has lost in the first round of 4 consecutive Challengers and has won only 1 match out of 6 played. Remember his tears after losing to Andy? I wonder if there were any when he lost to Patrik Niklas-Salminen ranked 912 in the first round of Tampere. It's tough out there.

Well I guessed he'd be looking for a new one after the split. I thought it would be someone high profile or used by a high profile guy in the past, so this doesn't surprise me. I doubt it cilic can repeat his major win, regardless of his coach. But he could improve on his current performance
