ESPN (http://espn.go.com/tennis/story/_/id/7029301/jelena-dokic-reunites-father-8-years?utm_source=bleacherreport.com&utm_medium=referral)- Jelena Dokic, father heal their 8-year rift

Yes heard about this earlier, I just hope that Jelena's Dad is a better person now as he made things unbearable for her in the early days. Meanwhile in Beijing both Kvitova and Stosur have fallen early. Kirkilenko has beaten Sam in the last two events, though they have both been close matches.

Yes, don't think she'd trade the slam for wins in the smaller events! Hopefully she can show good form in the WTA finals.

RoastLamb

Yeah, would love her to win that. Should be pretty exciting this year. Do you think Kim will make it? She's probs not even eligible.

JAMES4578
04-10-2011, 22:09
Unfortunately doubtful Kim will qualify, only Wozniacki, Sharapova, Kvitova and Azarenka have definitely made it thus far though.

Petko finally managed to beat Bartoli after serving for the match 3 times! It must be very cold in Beijing as they both had long sleeved tops on over their tennis outfits.

Glad thar Petra Kvitova took her first title since Wimbledon overcoming Domi Ciblukova 6-4, 6-1 having come through a 3 setter with Jelena Jamkovic in the semis. However, a disappointing performance from Sam Stosur in Osaka as she was comprehensively beaten 6-3, 6-1 by Marion Bartoli. WTA Championships is next week in Instabul. Just once place remains as Wozniacki, Sharapova,Kvitova, Azarenka, Li , zvonareva and Stosur haver already qualified.

Pity Sam couldn't pit up much resistance but that really was awful scheduling. Sharapova is almost certainly out after after a pretty poor display in going down to Li 7-6, 6-4. However the French Open champion nearly let her back in as she faltered at 5-2 in the 2nd and had to save bps before closing it out.

The reserve player gets a match ... and it's Marion Bartoli who will be stepping in.

I'm not sure if it's the same as the mens WTF where the 'reserve' is unlikely to get get enough wins to make the Semi's but earns ranking points and prize money for any wins.

Barry_FlatmanST (http://twitter.com/#%21/Barry_FlatmanST) Barry Flatman

For all tennis non-mathematicians, game score for Petra Kvitova v Aggy Radwanska means Caroline Wozniacki is definitely out of WTA Champs

RoastLamb
27-10-2011, 20:30
I only wish Aggie had beaten Caro in that first match. Then she'd be through as well. Vera is so flakey.

Azarenka is through to the semis in the other group.

Alis
27-10-2011, 21:02
Well done Aggie - magnificent staying power! Really hope she wins tomorrow or at least takes a set.

JAMES4578
27-10-2011, 21:16
It certainly became a cracking match and whilst Vera should have put her away Aga was so tenacious and deserved the win, well done! Another disappointment for Caroline, whilst Petra looking strong right now!

Alis
27-10-2011, 21:21
I suppose we should be grateful that we were spared a Shrieky v Screechy confrontation - I would have had to watch that one with the sound turned down. It looks like a Kvitova/Azarenka final - unless Sam makes a late run.

Why? She has been more consistent than anyone else this year which is why she has acquired the most points. I don't see why she has to constantly justify her position. Sure, she hasn't won a major but that doesn't make her a bad player. As I see it, the women's tour is anyone's for the taking at the moment but no-one else has stepped up and taken it so far.

I absolutely agree. Have been saying that for ages. She didn't make the rules. She just won the matches.

RoastLamb
27-10-2011, 22:09
Just when it comes to big matches she has fallen woefully short. As evidenced in this tournament. Her game is so defensive as well. Anyway, I really hope Kvitova starts being more consistent and winning more as I think she could be a contender.

Maza1987
28-10-2011, 10:22
Kvitova and Aza seem to be playing superb at the moment. If they can keep this up in to the early quarter of next year, one of them will probably take the number 1 slot.
Kvitova looks like she has got over her 'post first grand slam celebration slump' and is doing what I expected after she won Wimby.

Alis
28-10-2011, 10:33
Does anyone else think that they look very similar (Petra and Vika I mean) - sometimes I have to do a double take to see which of them is playing.

RoastLamb
28-10-2011, 13:49
The way to tell them apart is: Aza screams like a banshee and Petra doesn't. I always gravitate to the players who don't holler.

RoastLamb
28-10-2011, 17:03
What has happened to the ladies' doubles? Are they playing only at the weekend? I seem to recall it's only the top four teams that participate unlike the men.

Anyway Aggie and Petra are doing battle. Kinda pulling for Aggie. Best thing about this match is neither makes noise. Bliss.

Good to hear that Sam is through to the semis. Poor Li Na.

Alis
28-10-2011, 17:09
Petra has started making a lot of noise when she hits a winner or Aga misses. Where has this come from?

RoastLamb
28-10-2011, 17:19
Yes I noticed that - a horrible squeal. But at least she's quiet during a rally.

ljs
28-10-2011, 17:41
speaking of screeching , Azarenka / Bartoli just about to begin . The match of the screecher vs the shadow boxer .

Alis
28-10-2011, 18:16
Sooo sorry that Aga didn't make it through - if only she could have held one of those service games in the first set!

JAMES4578
28-10-2011, 18:23
Good that Sam made it, but certainly wasn't challenged today! Such a shame for Aga but she just couldn't take her chance and Petra was tough. The doubles is just the top 4 and doesn't start till the weekend.

RoastLamb
28-10-2011, 21:56
So it's going to be Azarenka vs Vera in one semi and Kvitova vs Sam int'other. Looks like an Az vs Kv final.

JAMES4578
28-10-2011, 22:09
I agree though would be delighted if Sam could prevail. The crowde didn't seem too enamoured with Vika today and she couldn't seem to motivate herself enough, though of course she had already qualified. Still Bartoli still had to put her away and then apparently had to catch a plane to Bali.

29-10-2011, 03:46

RoastLamb
29-10-2011, 13:56
Sam dropped her first service game and now it's 3-0 for Petra. Shame.

Petra wins 5-7 6-3 6-3

JAMES4578
29-10-2011, 15:13
Yes Pity Sam fell away in the crucial stages of the 3rd and the comeback was just a bit too late. However, Petra was pretty much dictating the match with her more aggressive play most of the time and in the end was the better player. She is likely to finish the year is 2nd place and only marginally behind Wozniacki. Meanwhile still a good year Sam and hopefully she can show more good form next season.

Well done Petra!

And is now world number 2 as well.

She's not yet the real deal in terms of having a champion's mentaliy - those squawks whenever she wins a point and the regular looks to her team illstrate that. Slightly reminiscent of Ivanovic's fistpumps etc.

If she can get that sorted then she's got the game to grab the tour by the scruff of the neck.

I really hope that she can do this. Time is on her side, which is handy.

Unfortunately in Brisbane Kim had to pull out of her semi with Hantuchova early in the 2nd having won the first in the breaker with a left hip injury and awaits tests. I hope she will be ok for Oz! Tour news - Angelique Kerber won her first WTA title in Paris today - she beat Bartoli in 3 sets.

Also, Dani Hantuchova successfully defended a tour title for the first time in her career, winnning the Pattaya Open in Thailand, coming from a set down to beat Maria Kirilenko.

I would say so! I posted something exactly to that effect on CC earlier today. She's displaying the same steely determination and strong defence as Nole. Here's what Stosur had to say about her after the match:

"As far as tonight goes, I think she played very well, very solid, as usual. She doesn't stand up and hit 50 winners a match, but she makes you work for every point and moves very well, stays on the baseline and really takes time away from you that way. It was obviously pretty tough for me to play aggressively.

"Victoria is very good at neutralizing everything. Pace doesn't really seem to bother her. You've got to find another way to win against her."

Sounds very much like something that could be said about Nole to me!!

Vika has dropped only 3 sets so far this year. She might take some performance to stop her in her tracks some time soon, especially as outdoor hard court is her strongest surface, with Dubai and the US HC outdoor swing to come.

Radwanska is an intelligent player - she doesn't have the power of some of the others but she certainly thinks her way around the court. It was an interesting match. Does anyone else feel, like me, that being No. 1 has gone to Azarenka's head? Certainly, she is playing extrtemely well but I felt that her triumphalism after her drubbing of Radwanska last night (6-0, 6-2) was totally OTT - talk about rubbing salt in the wound. I believe they are supposed to be great friends - I don't think that will last much longer if she continues to carry on like that. Her on-court interview had more than a touch of Federer about it too!

Yeah I agree Alis. She definitely seems to have a lot of swagger about her at the moment. Though the thing with Radwanska started when Radwanska implied that Vika had faked an injury in their match in Doha - they used to be really good friends before that but their friendship has got very icy since then.

But it is good to see a WTA slam winner back up her results in the rest of the tour, compared to the previous winners who all suffered disappointing losses afterwards.

JAMES4578
15-03-2012, 10:28
Certainly Azarenka very confident right now, disappointing match though as Radwanska was found wanting, even if she was under so much pressure. It could easily have been a double bagel but Agie got something going at the end! Impressed with Ivanovic's composure in the match. Ball toss seems better too.

Semi Final lineup looks like this:

Ivanovic v Makiri/ Sharpie

No, Bartoli wasn't well. I've seen her not look well at other matches, and she's won them though. Quite the battler.

Just to add to the Azarenka - Radwanska topic of discussion. I felt that Azarenka's celebration was fair game after some of the comments Radwanska made recently. She stated that she felt Azarenka was feigning injury in Dubai (it does not matter whether she was or not), the moment you make a public statement like this--you better bring your A game the next time you play said opponent. It's the old addage, if you talk the talk, you better walk the walk. And she was unable to, so needs to take it on the chin.

As a sports person, it's always better to be diplomatic. Always. Seldom do you hear any of the top 4 guys being overtly disparaging about any of the other 3 guys.

What would have been unacceptable was if Azarenka celebrated with such exuberance against a player with whom she had no 'previous' with after a comprehensive victory.

It seems such a shame that a friendship that has lasted since they were both young juniors has disintegrated in this fashion. Whether it's Azarenka that can't deal with her new found fame or Radwanska that can't deal with Vika's success I don't know. I don't hold much brief for anything that Chris Bradman says but even he was commenting on the crowd's negative reaction to Vika yesterday.

Certainly Kim seems to be playing well, hopefully she can go far! Just hoping that Perta beats Venus but it V playing playing well she will definitely need to be on form, not ideal they are meeting so early but result of the rankings of course! As it turned out Venus put in a commanding performance to ouust the Wimbledon champion 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. The first two sets certainly were competitive but Venus just ran away with the 3rd after she broke for 2-0 and held off the bp in the next game. The first two sets lasted almost an hour 3/4 whilst the decider was over in 34 minutes. Imagine it was a combination of Venus going up a gear and Kvitova falliing away somwhat. Petra has now lost her opening match in the last 2 events, so will want to get back to winning ways soon, though obviously she had a tough opener here. Remains to be seen whether Venus can maintain a high level consistently but Petra said she looked very fit and was back in the big time.

Surprised to hear that Wozniacki beat Serena for the very first time 6-4, 6-4 though Serena fought back from 1-5 down in the 2nd. A great win for Marion, well done! Maybe Vika wasn't in top form this week and hadn't quite recoveed from the previpus match but Bartoli still had to close it out and she should gain confidence!

Pleased for Marion! She always fights so hard in her matches, glad that it was her who ended Vika's streak :)

Can anyone tell me why the umpire called a first serve replay? Surely the over rule incident was in respect of a second serve so why didn't he call a second serve replay?

Hmm, don't know the answer to that one. Someone who has eaten the ATP Rule book might.
Not watching the tennis 'cos I've got some accounts to sort out.

Apparently this is the rule. A server gets two serves if the second serve is called out and over ruled. It seems to me that the receiver is penalised for a line judge's mistake. You learn something new every day.

This has always been the rule. If it is wrongly called out when it is in, you get to go back to a first serve.
Why should you have to go through the pressure of possibly double faulting again when you already served a legitimate second serve, is the other side of the debaste, murrayone.)

As it turned out, the umpire was correct in his actions and seems much ado about nothing.

GL to Radwanska tonight btw.

I agree, seems perfectly fair to me though understandable Wozniacki wass a bit miffed in the pressure of the situation when she had brought herself back into contention. It did become tight again but Sharapova was the stronger overall and came up with eniugh winners at the crucial times. Radwanska beat Bartoli comfortably 6-4, 6-2 and seems to be in good form!

Thank you for the information. I agree the umpire was correct in his actions - undoubtedly, as I see now that this is the rule. With regard to this rule however, I don't really see the justification for two serves in this situation. When you ask why should you go through the pressure of double faulting again when you have already served a legitimate second serve, my response would be because the first serve has already been forfeited by the server. The pressure of a second serve should not be alleviated by a miss call. Obviously this is a case of 'going back to square one' but it seems to me that this is a disadvantage to the receiver; denied the chance to take advantage of a second serve return by the mistaken intervention of a line judge. However, it has been pointed out that the players seem to concur with this rule and if they are happy with it then so be it. Can't say I would feel the same in that situation....I wish!!! Anyway it is very late and I must away. Goodnight!

Aga indeed did prevail beating Sharapova 7-5, 6-4 a good win for her and only her 2nd ever win over Maria but she she really has stepped up over the past year, wel done! A deserved winner today and she was the more consistent and creative. Maria had more chances in the first set but she couldn't capitalise and made some wild errors at crucial moments.

Yes she may have had some tough opponents, but Maria has underperformed in finals recently in comparison to the the earlier part of her career.

Aga has certainly upped her game in the last six months and thoroughly deserved the win but she was certainly aided by all the unforced errors from Maria.

I didn't suggest that it was. As I said, Aga played very well - as she has over the last six months - and thoroughly deserved the win.
