I do wonder if these things are done by a system of going down the list and allocating everything possible that can be given to Federer, and then sharing the rest out.

Why did Federer beat Nadal for Comeback Player of the Year? They both won 2 Slams but Rafa is well ahead on ranking points.

Nadal did suffer with injury throughout the year but probably unwisely, he did play up to Shanghai in October and only missed 3 tournaments (Basel, Paris and the Tour finals). Lucky to be nominated. ;)

Plus Fed beat Nadal each time they've played this year - think it's 4 times in total (Aus, IW, Miami, Shanghai). The 3rd consecutive win marked a record.

Think few would've predicted 2 slams at this stage last season, however doesn't mean it'll to be easy to repeat. Should be more challengers this season though probably still the one to beat in Melbourne.

Did anyone see the Ron Burgundy post-match interview with Fed after R1? Made me chuckle - questions included 'would you describe your game as a silky gazelle?, are you a vampire? and have you been eating wombat meat? More interesting than the usual crap they ask and to be fair Fed's a good sport.

Did notice he is getting another night match. Rumours of nothing but night matches and rla so unfair to whoever meets him in the semis, not used to the conditions where he has played over and over. Also he's then not subject to tough conditions like today's heat. My eyes are rolling out of my head again

Defending Aussie Open champion Roger Federer admitted he was “possibly” handed special treatment by those in charge of time of play when the No. 2 seed beat Thursday’s stifling heat with the final night match on Rod Laver Arena, breezing past Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets.

Federer admitted that it wasn’t his call to dictate what time he’d play, but admitted he requested not to play during the day, where temperatures rose to 39 degrees with on court temperatures topping 69 degrees during the day’s worst stretches.

It's just madness even when the other match is a more interesting match up he's on laver in night session. As one laver match in the night session has to be a ladies match and it seems the other has to be fed there is no room for anyone else. Unlucky for whoever has to play him in the semi in his slot on his court. But hey lots of people ask so it's ok right. Also if he really wants to preach the suck it up attitude perhaps he should stop requesting slots and take what he is given. No point getting annoyed with it though. It will never change. The delpo Berdy match is the match that should be on the night session on laver tonight. But instead it will be another borefest no doubt. I always watch thinking this will be the moment gasguet shines agising fed, then end up disappointed lol. I'll be watching delpo Berdy on the player anyway lol

I cannot believe Fed said this. Gael Monfils and Novak were both clearly suffering from the heat but that's OK as long as they weren't taken to hospital.

I don't see that he's being insincere - quite the opposite, he's saying what he thinks despite it being a controversial view. Now if he'd have expressed sympathy that would be insincere as he clearly doesn't feel an iota of it. Oh Fed :rolling:

Well Fed will have to suck it up himself tomorrow...he's been given a day match. Quite right too. Saw some discussion on Twitter that him being scheduled as night matches is due to demands of broadcasters wanting him to pull in evening TV audiences but I don't follow that logic myself...his matches are sooooo boring (spoken as someone who witnessed his snorefest Wimby 2017 final) unless he's playing Rafa, Djoko or Andy. Like many on here I haven't bothered watching him at all so far this Aussie Open, though I expect I'll have to watch him this coming week at some point

Fed is rolling through the bottom half of the men’s singles draw and can reach the main event on Sunday night without having to play anyone seeded higher than tonight’s quarter-final opponent Tomas Berdych (19).

The only other seed Federer has played was Richard Gasquet (29), who he enjoys a 16-2 head-to-head record against and steamrolled in three sets in the third round.

Let’s make it clear that none of this is the Swiss maestro’s fault. He can only play who is in front of him. The problem is none of his biggest rivals can stay on the court.

Exactly, Karanga - well said. I get people's exasperation over Fed's longevity and dominance but it's not his fault, what's he meant to do, throw matches? It's the so called 'challengers' to his crown that should come in for harsh review. With no Andy, Kei, Raonic and weak Nole, Stan Delpo this tournament offered a clear shot at King Fed.

A win in the final here would almost certainly mean Roger returns to #1 ranking after Acapulco (assuming Rafa doesn't play there and reach the final which seems very unlikely)

roytennisfan
28-01-2018, 20:37
If Rafa plays Acapulco, Roger could well take a wc into Dubai, which is on his schedule, in that case he would need to match Rafa, if he gets to SF F OR W to become the oldest #1 (if Rafa doesn't make at least SF, Roger beomes #1 anyway)

Obviously not feeling in need of a break next week though. Fed has requested a wildcard for Rotterdam next week. If he gets to the SF he'll overtake Rafa to become no.1 again. No doubt the Rotterdam tourney director will oblige

My reaction to this news is :grrr:

Fed should not feel in need of a break considering the easy run he had to the AO title!!! Of course the Rotterdam tournament director will be happy to oblige as his presence will ensure full house galleries.

Yep got to tip my hat to Fed, he really has defied the march of time and the odds. The injury woes of Andy and Djokovic, and Rafa's inability to maintain a consistent pattern of fitness since his return have certainly provided an opportunity for Fed to rise back to the top, but I've got to acknowledge his achievement in being able to seize that opportunity and have the motivation/fitness and desire to do it. So well done to him

Well Fed is the best of those who remain injury free (good for him to achieve #1 and remain injury free) so hope he can enjoy it while it lasts. May not be a long reign and it's not all that bad. Just another wee twist in the 'tales of the unexpected.' Lots more to happen in 2018 methinks.

It looks as if Fed, in order to lengthen his stay at #1, will decide to play the clay court season. I didn't watch him play at Rotterdam but it seems to me from remarks he has made since the AO and now that he has the #1 ranking back that he is very confident at the moment.

Eclipsing Rafael Nadal at the top of the rankings felt inevitable, but Federer has much more to aim for in 2018. And he simply has to play the clay-court season.

I can’t stand Federer. I dislike everything about him. Without his smug face as far as I am concerned any tournament is immeasurably improved.....!!!

However that’s just me.

Fair enough. I love watching him play, my only issue with him is that the longer he plays the more he will suffer physically and his legacy will diminish. But I guess he's earned the right to go out on his own terms.

Just watching an Olympics highlights programme on Eurosport, featuring best tennis players. Weird watching Federer's performances since 2000. That year he lost to Di Pasquale in the bronze medal match and they showed Roger drop-kicking his racquet. 2004 he lost to a pony tailed Berdych, 2008 he lost to Blake for the only time in his career, 2012 we know about, 2016 he missed. General opinion on the programme is that TOKYO 2020 (but not taking place until at least 2021 or even possibly 2022, with or without spectators) is where he is aiming for more than anything.

They are still calling it the 2020 games, even if taking place in 2021. However no guarantee this year either. https://tokyo2020.org/en/

Federer has tweeted that he'll return to the tour for the ATP 250 in Geneva, then Roland Garros.

Hi everyone! Happy to let you know that I will play Geneva and Paris .
Until then I will use the time to train. Can’t wait to play in Switzerland again.

I doubt the games will actually take place. Isn’t Japan in the process of another peak?

Not overly surprised at this. So who's Andy going to beat in the final now?

Best wishes to Fed. Would love to see him play again, one last hurrah next year in front of proper crowds. He deserves that.

Hopefully Federer's knee surgery goes well, certainly challenging at this point though.

Just read his coach believes it is highly unlikely Roger will play at Wimbledon this year.

Finally calls it a day, after the Laver Cup.
For me, the greatest player of all time. And should have retired after his 2018 Aus Open. Sad memory of his last match at Wimbledon, the drubbing by Hurkacz.

Well if the Laver Cup wasn’t already a sell out it will be now! Last chance for all those Feds fans, including myself, to see him in competitive action.

Did not think Federer would play much longer but possibly one more slam, however due to fitness probably is best to bow out at Davis Cup. Certainly one of the greats with classic style. Different views on his personality mind you. Wish him the best for the future.

I’d only started to like him when he got friendlier with Andy!

Now I’ll miss him!

I went off him in 2009 Wimbledon final when he put on the 15 cardigan but have warmed towards him more recently. He will be sorely missed

I heard about his retirement, earlier. I wasn't surprised, as it seemed he couldn't get over his knee injuries.

For me, whilst admiring his elegant playing style, he was always bottom of the big 4 - Andy at the top obviously with the other two alternating in the middle; I couldn't stomach his arrogance and will never forget his 19 jacket! However I wish him well in his retirement. x

Never been a fan (that’s an understatement). Glad he has retired. I wish him well in his retirement, but glad the frantic eulogising will stop.

I've absolutely adored watching Federer over the years. The most stylish player ever. He will be hugely missed because so few players play like him. Only the exquisite Dan Evans game comes close. It's a lost art, especially amongst the up and comers.

I never minded his personality - he is German for all intents and purposes (Basel 7 miles from border) and I just accept they're a bit weird and haughty lol (jk if any Germans are reading). I always found the pundits and his obsessive fans far worse than the man himself, but understand that others found it off-putting - I feel the same about Nadal. It's a shame that these things eat into just being able to enjoy a player, but they do.

Anyway, all the very best to the simply unforgettable Federer, memories for a lifetime.

Agree with mostly everything you have said RB. I have never been a fan however, but I absolutely appreciated his game, he was such a stylish player.

I got fed up of him winning everything and his fans were the biggest pains in the backside ever, lol. But the tributes from other players, including Andy and Dan show how well liked Federer was in the locker room, and how down to earth he was away from the cameras. Like others I especially hated the 19 jacket, lol. Novak and Rafa have had similar on their shoes but not as obvious.

And I especially like the ‘exquisite Dan Evans’ bit of your post ;):shades::big grin:
