Andy Murray's victory today guarantees him a spot in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in November

Has anyone heard when the groups are going to be announced? Part of me thinks it might be really late this year as what happens next week in Paris could change who qualifies and in which place apart from Andy, Djoko And Federer of course.

Whilst London may get the event for another few years, just can't see it being a permanent host. The end of year championships has been moved around the globe for some time.

London is also close to Paris, so less jetlag for those playing in Paris just before the ATP finals.

02-11-2012, 12:34
They really have got themselves into a mess scheduling these two events back to back. Not even a day in between! I can see at least two obvious problems. Firstly, the order of the seeds might not be known until after the final in Paris! And there may be two players in the Paris final who are put in different groups in London, therefore one of them would presumably have to play on Monday, the day after the final! What a farce, they've managed to screw up two good tournaments with this scheduling!

Guerkins2
02-11-2012, 13:55
You've got a 50/50 chance of seeing Andy - the first three years of this event it opened on a Sunday (6 days after the conclusion of Paris) and we gambled on them playing Andy on that day because of appealing to weekend crowds - there were groups of school kids there, etc. The first two years this theory worked, but on the third year they played Andy on the Monday - in retrospect they probably took this decision because of the injury he was carrying, to give him an extra recovery day...

The resolution of that was that we sold our Sunday tickets on eBay and combined that money to buy tickets to Andy's session on the Monday - for what ended up being the only match Andy played at the WTF last year. However, obviously with the quick turnaround between Paris and the WTF, nobody knows what's going on and so that's an option closed off. :(

My Dad's firm getting increasingly antsy - unless it gets announced today, there will probably be no Andy (or any live tennis at all) for me this year... :( :( :(

Take care... :)

Sorry if you are not able to go. Neil Harman tweeted he thinks it will be announced tomorrow, but it's not official. https://twitter.com/neilharmantimes

Best for Andy is to win his 3 RR matches. Then he'll lead Group A and play the 2nd placed in Group B in the Semi (hopefully 1 of DelP, Ferrer or Tipsy).
Assuming Nole is 2nd in A and Fed is 1st in B they'd play each other in the other Semi and one of them be knocked out!!!

He can't play Nole in the Semi-Final because they are in the same group.

That's what I meant. I reckon he's got a better chance in the semi against any of the Group B players (including Fed) than against Nole. Then the real top-2 would meet in the final! Just the little matter of getting to the semis first...

I'll be going to 4 sessions, if not more.

I really like this tournament, I have to say (in spite of my gripes about their scheduling and the ad rule for the doubles!).

Interesting that London is apparently close to securing the tournament for another 2 years. That's a total bonus for those of us in the uk, I'd say.

For all those asking (including my producer!) there is no doubles schedule yet because the Paris final affects the seedings..

Also news that @RoscoHutchins and @colin_fleming are the doubles alternates. The Poles decided not to come.

Neither Andy or Nole produced their best but crucially got the W and Murray was gutsy when he was up against it. Advantage to Djokovic right now though as he got the job done in straights, though Tsonga should have put him under more pressure. Certainly a few good doubles matches, though personally disappointed the Bryans went down.

I wouldn't worry about it. I suspect Nole is ony just appearing on the radar to many, even after his last two amazing years. Andy will need another three or four slams I suspect. Just the reality of superficial v. actual knowledge of tennis and its players.

Interesting day at the O2. Great win for Johnny and Freddie, they ineract very well and extremely fast around the court, especially at the net. Haven't seen them play live before. The presentation to Nole made up for having to sit through Feds demolishment of Tipsy. Kept shouting to encourage him but didn't make much difference. Surrounded by Fed fans with hats and flags and teddy bears, sad really. I kept getting glares everytime I shouted for Tipsy, great fun!! Didn't make any contact with anyone today. The crowd was so much noisier today. I'm sure it doesn't bother Andy but the level of support for Fed really irks me. Starting to feel very apathetic about how this tournament is ran now,

i'm going to see JMDP v Tipsy on thursday night. It's sold out. Whats that about?

The BBC have the right to show the best matches in the middle of the day, when everyone is at work? Why on earth did they choose to show the afternoon matches anyway?

Marray plays again today instead of tomorrow also? Whats that about?

This tournament should be about the 20,000 fans that go to watch every match that they love to keep going on about on the tv, so why don't they do the right thing? Or at least mix things up!

Can't blame the organisers for that one - except the ATP schedulers who thought it would be a good idea to have Paris and London back to back!

The two pairs from the Paris doubles final on Sunday were drawn in different groups. To be fair to them, they both had to have Monday off so that they had a day to travel and get used to the courts here, so they ended up splitting the doubles groups across Monday/Tuesday.

However the 2nd RR matches needed the winners in a group to play each other, and the losers to play each other too, so each group had to go back to a single day. The only decision they could make was which two teams had to play two days running, and Marray/Nielsen and Bhu/Bop got the short straw (which is presumably why they played the afternoon match yesterday).

It's "qualification scenario" time... (part 1) Djokovic into semis with straight-sets win, or if he beats Murray and Tsonga beats Berdych.

Freddie Nielsen needs to be nailed to a changing room mat until he agrees to continue as Jonny's partner.

At age 29 and a singles rank of 362 he's just never going to make it up the rankings now.
What 'singles career' does he realistically think he's got to think about?

Whereas he's got a doubles ranking of #23 meaning he and Jonny could get straight into all the Masters/500 events they want until Wimbledon and at that level keep posting ranking points and earning decent money.

Berdych wins the first set, which takes us closer to the possible nightmare scenario:nailbiter:

If Berdy wins in straight sets, we'll have:

Nole 2 wins sets: 4-1
Berd 1 win sets: 3-2
Andy 1 win sets: 3-3
Tsonga 0 wins - out

Then if Berd beats Nole 2-1 and Andy beats Tsonga 2-0, we'll have 3 players on 5-3 and it's all down to games, as in 2009. :sofa:

Jonny and Freddie deserve to do well - theypayed such a good match yesterday and, apparently tday.

Think Berdy's win pUts him above Andy in number of games won and lost - HELP!. PLease let Nole beat him easily and Andy beating JO too in straight sets

I fail to understand why they keep putting Andy on in the afternoon, as (a) most people are working then, and (b) there is a better atmosphere at night.

Din't agree there is a better atmosphere at night and as TV wants Andy he plays in then afternoon.

Yesterday the Fed fans behaved appallingly. We had 7 young men in bespoke Roger shirts in front of us yesterday ( "we get new ones made every year":grrr:). They kept shouting for Fed and another block of fans opposite were shouting back to them. It was sick making esp as they were wearing YUK Fed face masks. Tried to shout loud for Tipsy but to no avail.

I imagine someone did the Friday possibilities earlier in this thread, but I can't find them (at least not quickly) and someone seems to think there is no way Tsonga can qualify now (not completely true), so you might find this helpful - it shows who finishes 1st and 2nd in all the possible scenarios:

http://bit.ly/RJlmNk

There's one way Tsonga can go through, one way Andy can finish 1st (and Nole can go out), one way Andy can win and still go out and one way Andy can lose but still go through!
Thanks Steven.

The reason you can't see various hypotheses is 'cos we've started a new thread (http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?1531-BARCLAYS-ATP-WORLD-TOUR-FINAL-who-will-reach-the-Semi-s) for this and moved various posts over. Fully agree with you - there couldn't have been a better atmosphere that yesterday afternoon. The packed stadium was electric.

And as far as the Fed fans were concerned, I truly thought they ought to have been warned to keep it down, or threatened with rejection. They were noisy, intim idating and - frankly - offensive

How can Ferrer have such a bad record against Federer? It's funny that people sometimes describe him as one of the toughest players mentally, when to my mind his poor record against the top four is entirely down to his mentality against them - he doesn't think he is better than them!

It will be interesting to see how Fed does against the top two :p He obviously loves this surface, but I think Andy and Novak have been pulling away from him recently.

Federer was rubbish most of the time and the quietness of the crowd was evidence of that. Ferrer had more winners, higher serve % and very little in points difference, just couldn't persuade Ferrer to win the set, try as I might. I was vamosing, come oning but all to no avail and I was really close to the front.

I think Andy is playing the evening match because they want to avoid match-fixing. Would be very easy for Djokovic and Berdych to work out a scenario where they both go through if Andy failed to win in straight sets.

I think if Ferrer had played the afternoon match and lost, then the qualifiers would be known (if not the order of 1st & 2nd) before the evening match started. This way round, there will still be uncertaintly for the evening crowd on Saturday, whatever has happened in the afternoon.

Or maybe not - because if Potty wins in the afternoon, the qualifiers will also be known!

Tipsy didn't show up in that first set which was most disappointing for the crowd, thankfully he did get something going even if he was never likely to turn it around. Obviously still feeling under the weather but wonder if he is wise to continue in the tournament. It was also a bit frustrating Ferrer couldn't capitalise on Fed's woes, particularly in that first set but with the record just didn't seem to have the confidence.

Let's hope Andy does the business today, of course would help if Nole doesn't give Berdych any chance.

Disappointed Danny and Max were beaten by Team India. :crying: It was close but TI defo had the edge and were always in front. Too bad. Interesting that Danny will be partnering with Bhupathi next year. I wonder how that will work out for them. Still, Danny's won the WTF a few times now, with three different partners, so I guess it's time for another team. I do hope Johnny and Freddy win this afternoon as well and go to the top of the group.
