Really Andy. You have to win this. Keep focus. Just pretend its the US Open Final.....

No near and yet so far. Fed has risen to the challenge but not the best breaker form Andy and serve let him down. Let's hope Andy can be strong in the 5th!

Not good stats going for Murray but he isn't the same Andy from yesteryear so he will go on and win this and beat that annoying smug swiss

Thought Andy had this in the bag .... can't believe we are into a 5th set. John Lloyd still thinks Andy will win ..... and so do I, even though I can hardly bear to watch!

Come on Andy, you can do this!!!!

I do worry about Andy's current problems serving out matches - something he never used to have.......bring back the psychologist?

Linda
25-01-2013, 12:19
Unfortunately Nole just became favourite for the AO.He already was. But if it should be Fed in the final, Nole will make him look like an amateur.

Let's hope Andy can still win this.

Andy's 1st serve % for the 5th set is 67% and Fed's is 0% ;)

According to some journos on twitter Federer "said something" to Andy in the game he broke back resulting in the look from Andy. :grrr:

Found a couple of them. I would love to know what Federer said.

stevegtennis ‏@stevegtennis

When muzz served for the match after 1st point fed said something to murray. Seemed a turning point and would love to know what he said

Ben Rothenberg ‏@BenRothenberg

Would love to know what it was Federer said to Murray when the two were at the net at 6-5, 15-0. Totally changed momentum here. #ausopen

25-01-2013, 12:31
Andy's really attacking Fed's second serve well in this game.

Sallydaisy
25-01-2013, 12:32
*0-15 after fed hits into the net
*15-15 long from muzz
*15-30 fed muffed the 3rd shot, looks fed up!
*30-30
*40-30
DEUCE!!!

Game Federer - Murray leads by 3-1 in the Final set and serving next.

I was out when the incident occurred but my brother informed me Federer definitely said something to Murray. Federer has been a sour puss throughout, muttering and even swearing at times. Doing himself no favours.

Sallydaisy
25-01-2013, 12:34
*15-0, 30-0, 40-0 and what a shot down the line, and another!

4-1 Murray

When Andy wins thi they will say that Fed lost it cos he was tired from last match. Well champions can cope with countless 5 setters so actually that's poppyc**k.
Andy will WIN this and win it good.

DaveArneRiise
25-01-2013, 12:40
Shows how far Andy has come, lots of adversity to contend with in that 4th set climax. However he has mentally kept it together and produced assured tennis in this 5th set. Well done Andy!

Sallydaisy
25-01-2013, 12:40
Andy ...
*15-0, 30-0 and an ace, 30-15 good return from fed set up the error
*40-15 and Andy is popping down the Aces now!
Game Andy!

Yes Andy's would've have been tough not so long ago but can now cope better with swings in long matches. Of course Murray still has to finish Fed off but in a good position at 5-2.

Sallydaisy

Jim Courier with the mike ... these are justAndy's replies
(forgive the scruffiness)

On the match v Fed
always tough against him, always plays his best tennis in slams, he played so solid in the tie-break

winning the GS all helps, has lost a few matches here at AO, had lost to Roger a few times in slams so it doesn't make it any easier to play him

4th set - I didn't serve so well and Roger went for his shots and I was obviously nervous

didn't play best tiebreakker it's hard serving for a slam final place

On facing Nole:
didn't see much of Nole's Semi, he's got 3 AO's so he plays great here
i'll have to play my best to beat him

hope the USO win helps but I'll have to play an unbelievable match and recover well

I'm ready for pain, when we play each other its normally a physical match.
I'm looking forward to it.

Absolutely delighted. of course Djokovic playing really well after the scare earlier in the tournament and Andy will need to play better but at the top of his game he can certainly challenge Nole. Interview in corridor ...

Explain what it took to win
Huge physical effort, very tough match.

At change of ends after 4th set:
Try and win, don't let the match get away from you, I'd won the first and third sets and went back to what I'd done well in thise

What's changed over the last 15months
I just understand better what I need to do and I've become mentally stronger becuase of the results at the end of last year

SamP
25-01-2013, 12:59
3 STRAIGHT Slam finals. Incredible achievement.

He won 6 games in every set. He completely outplayed him.

What DID Roger say to Andy there? Andy's reaction at the end of the match and at the net said everything, as did his reaction after the comment was made. He wasn't impressed and obviously felt a little subdued at the end. But he'll be delighted.

Novak & Andy have both had their 5 set battles now, I don't see a huge gulf in fitness going into the final. Bring it.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! Haven't read this thread yet but WHAT a GRRRRREAT win. I was watching on BBC2 and silly me, put it on live pause at the end of the 4th to finish microwaving my jacket potato. Course I came back to find they'd switched to BBC1 but more incredibly I'd missed the first 3 games of the final set - in what seemed next to no time at all :grrr:. Hope I get to catch those at some point on Youtube.

Andy needs to recover for Sunday now. Yes, Nole managed back to back gruelling matches last year in the semis and final but he was playing a non hardcourt specialist in the final. This is a bigger ask for Andy I feel to play someone said to be the best hardcourt player in the world (I still think that's Andy personally). Let's hope the mental side of things helps him overcome the physical.

And throw in a teenager home early from school cos apparently it's too dangerous to remain open and the farmer spends half an hour sitting at the end of the road waiting for his daughter to appear cos some numpty wasn't accounted for at school for the bus (probably away at the dentist or not even in school :grrr: ) .... aye it's never easy!

Andy:

Roger (as per Sally's post):

http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/interviews/2013-01-25/201301251359121946973.html

Thought both interviews were good in terms of shedding further light on the match.

This is what Andy said regarding the Fed comment when Andy was serving for the 4th set.

Q. How surprised were you by what he shouted when you were at the net at 6 5 in the fourth? You had a funny look on your face at that point.
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I wasn't that surprised. I mean, stuff like that happens daily in tennis matches. You know, in sport, the stuff that some people say on football pitches and in basketball and all sorts of sports. I mean, it was very, very mild in comparison to what happens in other sports. It's just one of those things.

Q. Did it rattle you at all?
ANDY MURRAY: No. I think it didn't rattle me. I think he raised his game, you know, and that's what happens. Sometimes guys need to get, you know, emotion into the match.
He definitely raised his level and played in that game I think he hit two balls onto the line and was extremely aggressive after that.

Q. Can you repeat what he said?
ANDY MURRAY: It's not relevant what he said. You know, it doesn't really matter. It's something that happens, like I say, all the time on tennis courts, in sport, all the time.
Especially when it's a one on one sort of individual combat. It's not relevant. There's no hard feelings.

Q. Was it a word that we might struggle to get in our newspapers?
ANDY MURRAY: It's not relevant what was said, you know. I'm sure Roger won't talk about it and I have no interest in discussing it either, because, like I say, it happens all the time.
People will want to make a big deal of it and it isn't really a big deal.

Congrats @Andy_Murray for his win! Roger played great! Can't wait for Sunday night - Flew to Melbourne to watch. Awesome game!

He was in Sean Connery's box at the USO as well. Must really love Andy to fly all that way.

Very very well done Andy!

Watched the first 2 sets, then had to go with mum to hospital appointment (in a basement where there's no mobile signal!). Managed to find out from my daughter, before we went "underground" that Andy had won the 3rd - then had a long wait till I could find out the result! Am also very grateful to her for changing the dvd recorder when they switched from BBC2 to BBC1. Will try and watch the rest of the match later.

So now we have to do it all again on Sunday!!! (not that I'm complaining!)

Couldn't believe it .... my hubby booked cinema tickets for 11:45 this morning!:grrr: I saw first two sets, listened to Radio 5 in the car and then had to follow scores on the app on my phone during the film!!! Not a relaxing morning but a great result (good film too 'Quartet'). CONGRATULATIONS ANDY  I'm going nowhere Sunday morning :skippy:

Pat McEnroe kissing Fed's you-know-what and constantly saying rubbish like "Andy's barely hanging in"

How could he be "barely hanging in" when he was ahead for most of the match and even Federer admitted that he was having to play catchup the whole match?

Exactly!!!! I kept fastforwarding as much as I could to avoid his words of wisdom. He just doesn't like Andy.

Surely it was Federer who was barely hanging in?
Federer led at 1-0 in the 1st set then Andy broke him to lead until the close at 6'4.
Federer led in the 2nd set but ONLY because he was serving first and he went into the lead by just 1 point when he broke Andy at 6'5 in the t/b.
Federer never got ahead in the 3rd set 'cos Andy served first and broke him to lead from 3-1 on.
Federer led in the 4th set but ONLY because he was serving first + he broke Andy but Muzzah broke back so it Fed ahead on serve until the tie-breaker.
Federer never got ahead in the 5th set 'cos Andy broke him to lead throughout.

I must say Sally U do a great job for us fans. Thankyou. I was so proud of andy when he wins, he is so calm and cool, no big deal. No ripping of shirt or beating chest or growling like tarzan

I am soooo happy. Had to leave home at 1-4 in third. Sneaked a look before funeral service and it was 4 all. Didn't see anything until we got to the hotel and found out that it had gone to 5 and Andy had won. I was so relieved and exultant and really enjoyed the Pinot after that. Haven't watched my recording yet but will be viewing feeling very relaxed. He's pretty terrific, isn't he? Just love being an Andy fan.:boogie::skippy::yahoo: Any errors in this post are entirely due to alcohol. We said goodbye today to a really lovely young man who touched a lot of lives.

Luckily for me I was in the house when the dratted Beeb switched channels, so I was able to change over channels on the recorder - missed 3 points but better than missing the entire last set.

Having had to be out nearly all day I came on to read through the thread - but 64 pages?! Maybe I'll catch up later.

So sorry if this has already been said:

Never beaten Fed in a final: tick
Never beaten Fed in a BO5 final: tick
Never beaten Fed in a slam: TICK!!!

Now what can the rabid section of Fed fans come up with? They can't even say "never beat Fed when he was in his prime" - Cinci 2006. :)

Finished watching the match at 5pm! No major sofa moments at all, Andy stayed so calm even if his apponent didn't! What a great win, Andy has laid all the ghosts, or monkeys to rest! And did I just read that no-one else has even got to the final in the Slam after their first win?

We can all enjoy our haggis now and can't wait for the final now :)

The way Andy is going perhaps next year if he plays Roger the only debate will be whether Roger can get a set off him. :)

Personally I felt that the match was all about Andy today. He was so rock solid on serve in the first three sets and once he plays the tiebreakers as well as the normal service games I am not sure Roger can hurt Andy very much any more and frankly has to feed on any scraps from the odd wayward game that Andy throws him. I find it strange writing that but it was true today!

Exciting times. Whether Andy or Nole is the one to play better tennis in the final, there was a bit of a changing of the guard today. The next time Andy and Roger are drawn together in a non-clay (jury is out on that until the clay season starts) slam I know which players is going to groan more! Well done Andy!

Thought it was the other way round; Fed swore and Andy gave him a look that spoke volumes.
This is how the Daily M(F)ail reports it:

Andy Murray played down an on-court altercation with Roger Federer.

The incident occurred in the 12th game of the fourth set when Federer appeared to shout an obscenity at the third seed after believing he had stopped mid-point and was going to challenge a line-call on the baseline. Instead Murray played on and won the point with a forehand winner as Federer came in behind a weak approach.

This article has more details on the swearing episode of Federer when Andy was serving for the fourth set. This article and another I have seen indicate that Federer was annoyed that Andy paused on a close call, before he swore.

I have posted this in the newspaper thread but it belongs here also.

I thinks its funny that Mrs Federer put an article of clothing on top of the camera that was viewing them in Fed's players box. This was after the first set so they would not be seen on TV. She must have realised then that hubby was unlikely to win.

She had tied a sweater over the camera alongside her end of the player box.

Was it after the first set? I thought it was before the match started because they were still doing the pre-match chatter, before the players came onto court, and panning the stadium filling up when a camera suddenly lost vision. Immediately after they panned in and showed Mirka to be the culprit. I made my post after the first set but I thought the incident happened before the match started.

I was watching on Eurosport & the camera panned to the Fed box & it was one of Fed's coach's who was sat next to Mirka who put the training coat over the camera as it showed you him actually putting a knot in the sleeve & the commies did say his name but can not remember, put him in a line up & I could pick him out:) and it was before the players came on court!
