It's incredible! I was knackered and nearly went to bed over an hour ago - thought I should have a quick look at the tennis first - and been glued to it ever since! Fabulous match!!
Some quite brilliant play from Del Potro!!!

And he's won!!! GSM Del Potro def Djokovic 46 64 64

Amazing match and great comeback from Del Potro . Wonder if he'll be able to play at such a high level against Rafa though. Great to see Ross in the studio tonight!

It was soooooo close!!!
Total points won: Del Potro 101 v Djokovic 100

I bet none of the top guys are looking forward to the Miami draw after this!

Fran has yet to win a Masters title - will he beat Nadal tomorrow and finally win one???

He may not have won a Masters, but he has won a Grand Slam - and the way he's playing right now plus the fact that Rafa has just come back from a long injury-break, he's got to be in with a very good chance!

Yep, and he's also come back from being a set down in both matches against Andy and Nole. In 2008/2009 he was rarely able to do that against the top guys. H2H's mean nothing when the guy on the other side of the net plays so well.

Some of the points those two played tonight were stunning.
Still shaking my head at one or two of them.

Falling asleep though now ... g'night y'all.

I had a sneaking suspicion that Delpo would win today. Djoko has not been playing his best and Delpo has been in blistering form. Well done JMDP!

Well it kinda puts Andy's loss into perspective........I doubt many people expected this. Amazing tennis to watch, riveting stuff - no way could I have gone to bed before the end of that match. Two brilliant players, both so mentally tough, going head to head.

It looks like we could soon be talking about the Big Five if Delpo continues in this vein....

Quite relieved in a way - now Andy and Nole can work out a plan together for next time they play him!

Not sure what Rafa needs to get back to top 3 but looks like it won't be long.

Andy will have to work hard just to stay top 3 never mind get to number 1 but we are certainly in for some thrilling tennis this year if this tournament is anything to go by

Katie

Really pleased for Delpo - he's not played this well for such a long time. It's strange really how his wrist injury has actually helped him this week, forcing him to use the slice, which in turn disrupted Andy and Novak's rhythm. It's a good addition to his game definitely, giving him more time to set up his forehand. Against Rafa though the tactic's unlikely to work as that shot will go straight into Rafa's forehand, and he's also not someone who's bothered by slice generally (just ask Federer...)

I'd love Delpo to win tonight - he definitely deserves a Masters title, especially the way he's taken out #3 and #1 in the world to get to the final. I've a feeling that Rafa will prevail tonight though - he's well-rested and seems extra-determined this week. Should be a good match regardless though.

It'll be interesting to see if Delpo can keep up this form in other tournaments. The conditions in Indian Wells are ideal for his game, with the high bounce meaning the ball goes straight up into his strike zone and the slow conditions giving him time to set up his forehand. Similar conditions to clay really - I think he could do very well on that surface this year.

Very interesting. The top four stays the top four until presumably 1 of 4 things happens:
1. Injury (hopefully not and Rafa is back and the others stay fit).
2. One of them drops their level (Roger the one to watch methinks).
3. A new(ish) kid on the block comes along or makes the jump (e.g. Milos).
4. One of the players just below takes the next step. So far this year Daveed, Birdy, Tsonga and del Potro have had chances. Daveed so good on clay but taking that extra step elsewhere - not yet seen it, Tsonga and Birdy having the flair but needing the consistency - not yet seen it, and del Potro - who is suddenly starting to appear extremely difficult to beat due to a new found consistency and solidity of defence to go along with his power.

One thing this is likely to mean this year is that the QF opponent in Masters and GS tournaments becomes even more critical. Given the attritional style of play of Nole, Rafa, Andy and now possible del Potro when fully on their game, this could mean that anybody who has to beat two of the others to get to a final might be at a considerable disadvantage compared to somebody who gets there without this. Up to now I had thought that Roger might still have a chance of a GS if he got lucky in a draw and at the SF stage got lucky and played a weakened Nole/Rafa/Andy after they had played a punishing SF, but now this has to be extended to the QFs.

As such, the draws will be even more critical for all the top players!

Linda

I think Fed will definitely drop out of the top 4 and be replaced by DelPo. I'm quite happy with my top 8 prediction of Nole, Andy, DelPo and Rafa, although not necessarily in that order (barring injuries of course). I think that this new top 4 will be established quite soon and after that the QFs won't be so important as they are at the moment.

Which of course begs the question as to how long Roger will continue to play if he is no longer in the top four and particularly if he has little chance of adding to his slam tally. This year's WTF his swansong?

CRUMBS!!!! Just travelled back from Portugal and didn't even bother to check the result before leaving this morning. Thought it was a foregone conclusion. Wow this leaves me with hugely mixed feelings that go something like this:

1. YESSSSSS Andy's defeat has been vindicated by DP taking out "Mr Invincible".
2. Aaaaaaargh - what does this mean for the future of tennis? Another bash people off the court player - so boring. In his match against Andy I felt Potty just played a waiting game - get the ball back and then waited to unleash the forehand. Not much variety or finesse apart from the introduction of the slice.
3. Is DP going to be the new pretender for the top spot - has Andy left it too late, tinkering with (or majorly changing?) his game? If he needs a season to bed in new strategies that takes him to almost 27 years of age.
4. Should I be feeling distraught?

:help:

He says he'll play till Rio in '16.

Pabbers: I don't think Potty is a slam bam type of player anymore. He has much more finesse and game now.

Linda

I agree - I certainly didn't find last night's match boring - in fact it was riveting! I think Potty will take Roger's place in the top 4.

Wow! Tennis TV just pointed out that this is del Potro's biggest final since his USO victory and the power is starting to be awesome. Even Rafa cannot return all of them!
I suspect del Potro will have to win in straights so the longer Rafa keeps him on court, the better.

david1610
17-03-2013, 22:12
Del Potro wins the first set 6-4. That last game should be put on Youtube. Rafa had some amazing shots there but del Potro edged the game and the set.
This is quite a match!

JAMES4578
17-03-2013, 22:14
Amazing final point as Del Potro takes it 6-4 with some stunning shotmaking after Nadal initially set the pace. Still Rafa can still find a way back if Delpo can't sustain this level.

david1610
17-03-2013, 22:39
i am honestly starting to think that del Potro has watched a lot of videos of Andy!3-2 del Potro Currently 15-40 on his serve.
Rafa has a chance to get back in the match.

JAMES4578
17-03-2013, 22:44
Rafa breaks and holds for 4-3, Juan tightened up a bit there and this set in the balance now.

Linda
17-03-2013, 22:53
One set all :)

david1610
17-03-2013, 22:54
One set all. Almost a mirror of the first, with one player starting the set well and the other coming on strong in the second set.
Just wondering if del Potro has anything left now.

JAMES4578
17-03-2013, 23:01
Rafa certainly with the momentum and Del Potro may not have the stamina to withstand the challenge.

Del Potro wins the first game of the third and holds serve after ten plus minutes. Epic game.

JAMES4578

I don't know why I should be surprised at the brilliance of Rafa after 7 months out of the game, but it's still quite incredible. Respect to Delpo however for such a fine display all week. I don't know when I've witnessed three consecutive matches of such a high standard.

Now Andy, over to you for Miami!

What a great match! I recorded it and have had to watch in stages over the last couple of days.

Rafa was very emotional - it makes me think he must have seriously wondered himself if he could ever get back to his best. Well, he's done that and then some!!

I really like Delpo so really felt for him but other than Andy, I will always support Rafa. So happy for him.
