Although Indian Wells starts on Thursday 7th March there is a 96 draw with the top 32 seeds receiving Byes.
R2 matches usually begin on Sat/Sun and last year Andy played his first match on the Sunday.

So, we may not see Muzzah in action again until Sunday 10th March ... 6 weeks ...

6 Weeks ? Another 6 weeks without Andy ?

He had better do more than heal the blisters! Presumably he's getting down to some more work on his game with Ivan in the states but ....oh dear....6 weeks. I cant stand it

Well in theory combining the 2 surnames gives us Marming!!!
I think Colin hashtagged them on twitter as somthing - need to check.

Forgive my stupidity but what does OS stand for?
On Site.
In doubles players gain entry in 1 of 3 ways.
DA = direct accepance based on ranking at the time of the entry date (2 weeks ahead).
WC = wildcard
OS = allows for any players present at a set time before the draw can be put into it in pairs ranking order based on combined singles and doubles ranking.
On the Entry List there are the DA's and then there's a list of ALTS. If for any reason some of the DA's can't play the Alts are next in line. But in doubles they often swap partners and sometimes there's a couple of singles guys who want practice. So the OS places are often sought after - and there will probably be a high profile Doubles Draw in IW.

It's actually not that long a lay off - Oz was only the end of January and Feb is a slightly short month. Think we're all just missing him. He needs the chance to consolidate some of the things that Lendl is probably trying out with him, away from a tournie. Bring it on!!!

What's your source Harriet??? There's absolutely nothing on the twitter wires or forums today in support of your statement so can you post a link to where you 'heard' it?

There was an item in Marca last week stating he'd withdrawn from IW but it was unsubstantiated speculation on their part and after doing the rounds of several tennis forums and twitter it was denied (with some anger) by the Nadal camp.

Rafa has confirmed - in his presser after winning Acapulco - that he is DEFINITELY playing at I/Wells. So, is your story new or a re-run of the speculation in Marca?

Thanks RL. That sounds more pukka. I missed the exho (was asleep!) but I guess those of us this side of the pond had better get ready for some late nights or early mornings if we want to watch Andy, Nole, Rafa and the others in action from Thursday onwards.

The IW draw starts any minute now ...

Sallydaisy
05-03-2013, 23:15
Here goes ... (all via Ben Rothenberg on twitter)

Novak Djokovic will open against the winner of Fabio Fognini and Aljaz Bedene
Roger Federer opens against the winner of Denis Istomin and a qualifier.

Andy Murray is in the top half with Djokovic, will open against winner of Donskoy-Ito

That means David Ferrer is in the bottom with Roger Federer. Ferrer opens vs Hanescu or Anderson

First round highlights: Davydenko-Mathieu, Lu-Smyczek, Blake-Haase, Johnson-Andujar
Other intriguing R1s on bottom half: Soeda-Harrison, Bellucci-Tomic, Granollers-Nalbandian, Troicki-Goffin

I'll merge my posts later ...

Novak Djokovic's projected quarterfinal foe is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, dodging Nadal early.
Tsonga could get Blake R2

Andy Murray's projected quarterfinal opponent is Juan Martin del Potro,
who opens against Mathieu or Davydenko

This means Rafael Nadal will be somewhere on the bottom half with Federer.

David Ferrer's projected quarterfinal opponent is Tomas Berdych,
which means RAFAEL NADAL IS IN FEDERER'S QUARTER.

Rafael Nadal's first match on hardcourts in almost a year will be
against winner of Go Soeda and Ryan Harrison.

Another brutal draw for Ryan Harrison--he may need to beat Nadal to stay in top 90

Projected QFs: Djokovic/Tsonga, Murray/Del Potro, Ferrer/Berdych, FEDERER/NADAL

Cilic lands in Tsonga's eighth, while Almagro is in del Potro's.
Gasquet is in Berdych's eighth, and Tipsarevic in Rafa's eighth.

Andy Murray's projected fourth round foe is Kei Nishikori

Gilles Simon is the projected fourth round foe of David Ferrer,
and John Isner gets a potential fourth round against Federer.

Last year's finalist John Isner will have to get past Federer
and into the quarterfinals to stay American No1. Tough ask.

Also not a great draw for Sam Querrey.
Likely R2 against Jack Sock, and maybe Djokovic in fourth round.

Very heavily Canadian crowd here cheers as Raonic lands near Cilic
in the Tsonga eighth, Djokovic quarter.

Dolgopolov gets potential R3 against Nishikori, R4 against Murray.

Tommy Haas gets a tough draw--Andujar or Johnson first, then Almagro in R3, del Potro fourth round.

Janowicz gets a possible R2 against Nalbandian—chair umpires beware.

Novak Djokovic's projected fourth round opponent is the struggling Juan Monaco. Monaco opens against Robredo or Matosevic

Feliciano Lopez vs Janko Tipsarevic is a likely second round battle

... or not since both could retire or not even play given the experience of the last few weeks.

I don't think so. Andy is in Nole's half so that's the likely Semi.

Seeded Quarter Finals are (in draw order)
[1] Djokovic v Tsonga
[3] Murray v Del Potro
[4] Ferrer v Berdych
[2] FEDERER v NADAL

Monaco vs Robredo and Ferrer vs Simon are projected matches.
Gasquet/Berdych and Isner/Federer projected 4R
Kohlschreiber gets a flashy R2 against either Kubot or Paire, in the Gilles Simon section

(now getting information from MTF as well so having to edit content before posting!
Monkeys they are.
:grrr:)

Seppi gets potential R2 of Baghdatis, R3 of Tipsarevic, R4 of Nadal.

John Isner will open against either Hewitt or Rosol, then likely Wawrinka,
then Federer. Brutal draw w/ big points to defend here

Ben Rothenberg ‏@BenRothenberg (https://twitter.com/BenRothenberg)
Grigor Dimitrov is a fun possible third round opponent of Novak Djokovic. Cool early match there. #BNPPO13 (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23BNPPO13&src=hash)

Mardy Fish is in the Tsonga section, will open against Benjamin Becker or a qualifier.

Klizan will open against Lu or Smyczek, then gets Andy Murray in the third round, most likely

Rafael Nadal's projected third round foe is Mikhail Youzhny,
provided Youzhny gets past LMayer-Malisse

Verdasco gets Nieminen or Sijsling first, then a possible Spanish battle
against David Ferrer in third round

Chardy gets a potential R3 against del Potro,
which would be a rematch of his upset win in Australia.

Last seed placed is Julien Benneteau, who gets a potential third round meeting with Federer, who he beat in Rotterdam in February

I can't wait to see what Pseudofed tweets about that ...

I'm glad that Rafa isn't in Andy quarter and with Fed not being in the best of form lately pity he's in Djokovic's half, however hopefully he'll at least have a good run here. I've seen tougher draws though of course Del Potro also lurking. Will need to see hows Nadal does here but may have a reasonable chance in the quarters should he get there.

To be honest I cant see Rafa getting as far as the quarters here. His first tournie wont be easy for him. Once he gets to the clay and grass he'll be back in his element. After that ???? well, all we can do is hope. I'd hate to lose him

Not a bad draw at all for Andy, all things considered. It could have been a LOT worse. Bring it on!!!

I like this draw for Andy - and importantly he's not got any dangerous floaters in the first couple of rounds. I'd say he's a good bet to reach the SFs - a QF match with Delpo would be very interesting - I hope that matchup happens

Really looking forward to see Andy play after so long! Hope it's a successful tournament for him. :)

Would love to see Rafa knock Fed to bits here, be great for Rafa's confidence in his return to hard courts and also gives us a reason to be snug to the federer fans :p

They have but it's not very clear and I think it's of Muzz.

Going back to the draw, I would not even say Roger is as certain to blow Stan over in a possible last 16 match as I would have even a few months ago....
Like Andy's draw apart from del Potro... but lots of potentially tricky opponents avoided. Gasquet's "eighth" has a lot of tricky opponents in it!
Will be interesting to see how Daveed makes the translation to hard courts as he has been having a very good year so far!

Andy idea when we'll see Andy on court - do we think it will be Sunday ??

In the 1st round the bottom half played yesterday & the top half play today --therefore as Andy is in the top half he'll be playing his singles on Sunday. It's quite likely that his doubles will be tomorrow.

:cheer::cheer:Wey - hey Hewitt beat Isner:cheer:
Yes... and Isner got to the final last year. That will be a big dint in his points.
Hewitt was really canny in putting the ball really low when Isner went to the net - reminiscent of Andy's horrible "let's see if you can volley from your shoelaces" shots!

JAMES4578
09-03-2013, 23:07
Tough final game but Hewitt knocks out Isner 6-4 in the 3rd, well done! Has to be said John hasn't produced his best of late but still a great win for Lleyton and his hunger was very much evident!

Tight and Reynolds gave a bit away but glad Mardy got the win, well done! Another upset as Matosevic puts out Monaco 7-5, 6-0, a bit demoralising for Pics in the 2nd!

Lu will be Andy's next opponent after beating Klizan 7'6, 7'6.
Cilic beat Ramos

1-1 each between Dolgopolov and Berlocq but the Russian is up a break in the 3rd set.

I have such a hard time unlearning my school geography and working out which bits of the former USSR are where, especially the -stans! Apparently Donskoy will be playing for Uzebekistan against Australia in the Davis Cup...:)

Is that at me Linda? If so I was referring to Dolly and I'm afraid that sometimes I still think of bits of the former USSR as Russianl. I'm very well aware that Berlocq is Argentinian.

Anyway - Berlocq won so that's another seed gone today.
Has anyone looked at the Bracket Challenge - it must be carnage!

As I said, me too! Having worked with different nationalities I have come to the conclusion that you can probably work out a person's age and nationality with just a few geography questions! :)

IW top half of the draw: a few more seeds have bitten the desert dust today.
Juan Monaco [14]
Martin Klizan [26]
Alexandr Dolgopolov [22]
Jeremy Chardy [25]

Good news though for Raonic - he's got a walkover into R3 instead of having to play Llodra.

IW bottom half of the draw: early notes about OOP Monday.
Indian Wells monday: Rafael Nadal will play 2nd match on stadium (so about the same time as Andy was today).
Roger Federer will play 4th match on Stadium

And from Jo Durie on Twitter:

Jo Durie ‏@Jodurie (https://twitter.com/Jodurie) The courts at IW seem extra bouncy & slow this year. At least the desert air makes the ball move fast. It can be a difficult combination.

It obviously scared one of the players ... Leonardo Mayer just withdrew (back injury).
Rafa has a W/O into R4.

A pity for Rafa, he really wants match practice.

He's going to get plenty of practice in R4 ... his opponent will be Ernie 'Fearhand' Gulbis who is on a 12-match winning streak and just beat Seppi.
That may have messed up some Bracket Challenge scores ...

Neil Harman ‏@NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) GSM Gulbis 7-5 3-6 6-4 over Seppi. Into 4th rd to play @RafaelNadal (https://twitter.com/RafaelNadal)

Indian Wells - After R3, the last 16
7 of the top 8 seeds have made it through (Ferrer#4 being the exception).

Novak Djokovic [1]
Sam Querrey [23]
Milos Raonic [17]
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga [8]

Andy Murray [3]
Carlos Berlocq(WR85, CH37)
Tommy Haas [19]
Juan Martin Del Potro [7]

Tomas Berdych [6]
Richard Gasquet [10]
Gilles Simon [13]
Kevin Anderson (WR37, CH28)

Rafael Nadal [5]
Q Gulbis (WR67, CH21)
Stanislas Wawrinka [18]
Roger Federer [2]

There are 3 who've done better than expected.

Berlocq had a career high ranking of #37 this time last year BUT that was more of a blip in a 3 year period of consistently being ranked between the 50/80's.

Anderson has a current ranking of #37 so a last 16 place is not that unexpected and this time last year he was ranked #28.

Gulbis is trying to work his way back up the rankings and has put in some hard yards and gained some determination over the 'off' season. He had a career high of #21 in Feb 2011, slumped to around 160 in 2012 and has jumped from 136 in January to #67 this week and is projected to move to #42 so far this week.

Too funny! But to be serious for a moment, I think the main effect of the back problem was not on his movement but on his serve - he only served 4 aces in the entire match, whilst these days Fed increasingly is reliant on his serve to get him through matches.

Not looking likely now, Jo giving too much away as Nole goes up 6-3, 2-0-let's get something going Tsonga!

ljs

can u believe this James , i expected Nole to win , but this is pathetic

JAMES4578
15-03-2013, 21:44
It's all over in 53 minutes as Djokovic has a breadstick in the 2nd,ended up being a bit of a damp sqib. Jo made far too many errors and couldn't put Nole under any pressure. Whilst the world no1 seemed in commanding form, can't really tell too much from this match.

:grrr: Tsonga! Should have let Milos beat him.

I don't think I've ever seen Jo play so badly.

Linda

Just got in from my book club, expected to see an exciting third set in the Nole/Jo match but I see it's already finished. Is Nole playing frighteningly good then?

Whilst Nole was on form, Tsonga really was out of sorts tonight.

Djoko out on the football pitch after his match

Linda
15-03-2013, 22:40
Obviously didn't use up enough energy on court. Talking of Djoko, I'm reading elsewhere on the net that during his match against Querrey he was so upset at the crowd cheering against him, that he let rip with a dreadful stream of profanities - the Serbian equivalents of the f-word and the c-word - but of course the umpire couldn't understand it so he didn't receive a warning.

ljs
15-03-2013, 22:41
really ?? didnt see that match , wish I had lol

Pretty going as expected and Nadal confident, only the one break thus far but Rafa seems to be in command.

ljs
16-03-2013, 20:48
kinda half following this , wasnt Berdych up 5-2 at one point ????

JAMES4578

kinda half following this , wasnt Berdych up 5-2 at one point ????

Berdy broke at 4-3 with some help from Nadal but won only one 1 point when serving for it at 5-3. He's just made a complete mess of a smash and so Nadal will serve for the match at 6-5, can't see Rafa faltering.

Sallydaisy
16-03-2013, 21:01
Rafa wins the SF against Berdych, 6-4, 7-5, to play the winner of Djoko v JMDP.

Nadal is something else isnt he !!! Off for 7 months with an injury & then plays like that !!!!!

pretty good match so far !!

JAMES4578
16-03-2013, 22:29
Certainly some exciting points but Nole breaks at the end of the set to take it 6-4 and Del Potro having treatment on his foot, up against it on all fronts though he's been competing well. Djokovic a step ahead though!

ljs
16-03-2013, 22:43
Wow , Delpo playing really well !!!!!!!

Yes, if this is his form from now on the top four awaits!

JAMES4578
16-03-2013, 22:54
After Delpo lost the initital break thought it would be be normal service but consolidates this time for 3-1 lead and giving Djokovic something to think about.

ljs
16-03-2013, 22:57
Im actually hoping Delpo gets this win.

yeah me too dewster !!!

Yes indeed, Delpo playing some explosive tennis. Failed to serve it out the 1st time but held firm to take it to a decider.

Linda
16-03-2013, 23:24
Well, into a third and this match could be anybody's!

dewster99
16-03-2013, 23:34

Linda
16-03-2013, 23:35
I so hope this third set is still competitive and doesn't end up 6-0 or 6-1.

JAMES4578
16-03-2013, 23:43
Hope Delpo's got something left but can't see a way back for him now.

david1610
17-03-2013, 00:12
I think it should make us reconsider how well he played last night rather than thinking Andy lost it .... even Nole is on the edge now...

ljs
17-03-2013, 00:12
match of the tournament this is

Linda
17-03-2013, 00:14
DelPo breaks and will serve for the match! Though there could be more twists yet . . .

JAMES4578
17-03-2013, 00:14
Yes puts it into some perspective and Juan breaks again to lead 5-4 and serve for the match, though of course you can't rule Nole out!
