Intriguing that Federer isn't playing Miami although he's now free to choose which Masters he enters.
It means he's having 2 weeks off following the AO (weeks 3/4), playing Rotterdam (week7), another week off and then Dubai (week 9). He'll then travel to IW to play back end week 10/week 11 and then skip Miami.

david1610
07-02-2013, 00:27
I suppose the logic is to get points in IW, realise that even in his prime back-to-back Masters was tough, then get plenty of clay court practice in.
And pace the year...

pabbers

He needs points though if he has any ambition to return to #1 and he can't guarantee anything these days.

So Andy will be seeded #2 in Miami? If he gets to the semis maybe he could have Ferrer this time for a change.

I think he may have foregone that hope (Nole is too strong pointswise over the Masters and GSs, Andy is still an unknown factor in terms of Masters this year and if Rafa gets back to 100% he will eat up the clay points) and is probably targeting GSs and the WTFs with a couple of minor tournament victories here and there.

My impression is that he will not get through both Andy and Nole in the same hard court GS and his hopes lie in Wimbledon and Andy/Nole weaking the other in a punishing semi final if they are drawn together.

What is perhaps more worrying for him is hanging on to number 2.

Don't forget that with the current ranking he (or anyone for that matter) might get drawn against Rafa at RG in the QUARTER FINAL!!!

Now that would be tough!!! ..... for anyone. Hope it's not Andy!

Yes! Imagine Andy has a really good clay court season .... we know who we will want him to avoid in the QFs!!!!

(Rafa has so many points to defend in the clay season that I am not sure he is likely to get back to the top four by RG. Others will know better).

Neil Harman ‏@NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) Intrigued that note from @SonyOpenTennis (https://twitter.com/SonyOpenTennis) saying Serena Williams plays Thursday day session,

It may well be that Rafa hasn't been included because he/his team were waiting to see how his knees shaped up on the hard courts in Indian Wells.

Yes, can't say I'm shocked. After four finals in a row I think he more than deserves a break before the gruelling claycourt season begins.

No Rafa and no Fed in Miami. Also no Wawrinka. I would think the TD is not thrilled, but he's probably sold most of the tickets by now.

I see seedings based on 18 March rankings. So will del Potro be seeded 4 after Daveed?

In the new rankings he is s still no 7,so Berdych would be the 4th seed and Del Potro 5th.

I think the TD at Miami probably knew sooner than yesterday; PR gaffe from them a week ago.

If Rafa were playing here he'd be seeded 4th since in today's rankings he's swopped places with Ferrer who is now 5th. If anyone should be worried by Del Potro it's Berdych - see mini-chart below including the =/- changes brought about by results in Indian Wells.

Singles Rankings w/c 18th March (week 12)
Top 35, i.e. those likely to be seeded in Miami since those in red are out of the tournament.
Clicking on the Points link will take you to their current points breakdown on the ATP website.

NB. Andy Murray drops 600 points this week whilst Federer only drops 45. So in terms of points going into Maimi Roger is on 8670 and Andy on 7750 which is why he'd need to win Miami and gain 1000 points to reach the #2 spot this week. It's a tough ask after the performances we've seen this last week in Indian Wells and Nole is going for a 3rd consecutive win here.

Strictly speaking, he still remains a worry - but for the QF!
I suspect though that he will find it tough to do well in both - we have seen over the years that back-to-back Masters are really hard.

Miami WTA: @HeatherWatson92 plays Ayumi Morita JPN WR 50 (CH 40 in 2011) in R1, a chance to avenge a 5&2 loss here at the same stage in 2011. Miami ctd: The winner plays 31st seed Yanina Wickmayer, with top seed Serena probably looming in R3 for the survivor of that little section

Miami ctd: @laurarobson5 plays Camila Giorgi ITA WR 85 (CH 73 last month), winner plays (32) Alizé Cornet; possibly (2) Vika Azarenka in R3

Not too bad a draw for Andy,at least Del Potro is in the other half! Though a few in his section have given him trouble in the past and Tomic wouldn't be the easiest opener. Hopefully though a different Andy will on show in Miami! Reasonable for Heather/Laura, hopefully they can make some progress.

Andy looks to have a very difficult draw with Grigor Dmitrov in round of 32 and then probably Jerzy Janowicz in last 16. Fingers crossed!

Yes. I noticed that too. There does not appear to be any "freebie/do it in his sleep" match in his theoretical path through the tournament. It can work both ways and draws can open up of course. If he gets a really stern test early on there is the danger of an early exit if he is still playing himself into the tournament, but at the same time it can make him more ready for the even sterner tests later on. Andy did not have three easy peasy matches in Indian Wells but it was quite a jump in level to then playing an inspired del Potro who in the end came close (an extra day's extra rest would have made it even more interesting) to beating Andy, Nole and Rafa in successive matches.

Andy has pointed out that he does feel he has somewhat of a "home" advantage in Miami, is very used to the conditions and will have Ivan there. He should be less rustly after four matches in Indian Wells. While he might be nervous in his first match, I am hoping that we get to see a little bit more of Andy's real 2013 level this tournament.

Paire giving the umpire what for ...

This is what happened ...

Paire apparently smashed a racquet he took from LLODRA's bag, and there was no handshake, and a ton of code violations, and they didn't even look at each other after the match.

Paire also gave Llodra a "stare down "after every point.
http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=14203362&postcount=10

Benoit gets serenaded with boos as he walks off the court and responds by enthusiastically waving to the crowd.
... and from Carole Bouchard

Carole Bouchard ‏@carole_bouchard (https://twitter.com/carole_bouchard) 1m (https://twitter.com/carole_bouchard/status/314490033119830018) Details coming on the Paire - Llodra incident.

AFP says Llodra told Paire not to "behave like a little ****" after an issue on a serve, then Paire took it very bad and threw some chosen words to Llodra, like "eater of ****" and tried to shoot him (llodra says so).
Llodra also took a code violation for it seems a provocation towards Paire.
llodra says Paire went too far in insults.
Also says : "I knew he'd go crazy if I was winning the first set".
No handshake.
Only Llodra's version in AFP.
More i'm sure (and hope) in L'Equipe tomorrow.

Yes, it does show how tought it is - Djoko seems to survive it all somehow.

What a shame it happened when Delpo wasn't in Andy's section - he doesn't have the best of luck with the draw and scheduling at times

Cibulkova won the first set 6'2 against Serena Williams and it's 4'4 in the 2nd with Cibu to serve.

Andy's match follows this one so IF Cibulkova wins in 2 he could be on a lot sooner than we thought.
It'd be unlike Serena NOT to put up a fight so it's more likely there'll be a 3rd set.

That would make it nearer 7.30 for Andy.

It looks like they are splitting the men's quarters into Wednesday and Thursday and having both semis on the Friday. The ladies final will be on Saturday and the men's on Sunday. Good result for Andy though - esp since he now seems to be on song

Jo has a coach - Roger Rasheed.

Just checked results this morning - go smacked Nole lost! Did anyone see it? Something up with Nole or Haas just playing lights out tennis?

A combination of things. It was really cold and a bit windy and Haas just handled the conditions better. He played great Tennis while Djokovic seemed a bit flat maybe. But there was nothing physically wrong with him, I think.

Djokovic is often troubled by players with a lot of variety that don't allow him to get into a rhythm. Which is also a reason, why Andy is always a tricky opponent for him.

Alis

Haas played amazingly well from beginning to end. When he lost the break in the second set I though Novak would storm back - it didn't happen mostly because Haas refused to let it.

Sallydaisy
27-03-2013, 08:11
So the last 8 who will contest Quarter-Final matches today and tomorrow includes some names we didn't expect!

[15] Tommy HAAS GERV [11] Gilles SIMON FRA
[3] David FERRER ESPV Jurgen MELZER AUT
[8] Richard GASQUET FRAV [4] Tomas BERDYCH CZE
[9] Marin CILIC CRO V[2] Andy MURRAY GBR

Andy still has a mammoth task to win this tournament IMHO because any of those guys could go on to win it.

Anyway, he has to get past Cilic first (H2H 7-1), Berdych (H2H 4-4) or Gasquet (H2H 4-3) and none of those are likely to be easy matches for Muzzah. I hope he reaches the Final and thrashes Haas ...

With the #2 ranking at stake that might explain Andy's 'nervousness' this week so I'm particularly glad this is one of his 'home' tournaments and that Lendl is present for support. Andy sounded happy in his on-court interview after the Seppi match and said how good it was to have family (his Dad has been in Miami as well as Judy and Jamie), Kim, the 2 dogs and other friends around. So hopefully all that will keep him calm and focussed.

Thanks for that Rainy Days - Nole seems to have trouble with windy conditions; there are many who attributed Andy's USO win last year to the fact he dealt better with the breeze at Flushing Meadows that day.

Some other 'stats' I'm picking up about the match last night ... from various people on twitter:-

Stuart Fraser ‏@stu_fraser (https://twitter.com/stu_fraser) 1h (https://twitter.com/stu_fraser/status/316809327879024640) What a win for Tommy Haas (35 next week) over Djokovic in Miami!
This time last year he was ranked No.145 & about to play Houston qualies.

Beyond The Baseline ‏@SI_BTBaseline (https://twitter.com/SI_BTBaseline) 1h (https://twitter.com/SI_BTBaseline/status/316804108944277504)
BTB - Tommy Haas became the oldest man to beat a No. 1 in 30 years.
So that's pretty good. http://tennis.si.com/2013/03/27/tommy-haas-upsets-novak-djokovic-sony-open-done/ … (http://t.co/aPr7kkPV8z) #SonyOpenTennis (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23SonyOpenTennis&src=hash)

Carole Bouchard ‏@carole_bouchard (https://twitter.com/carole_bouchard) 1h (https://twitter.com/carole_bouchard/status/316810666637926401) 30 unforced errors in 2 sets for Djokovic, basically says it all... What a disaster of a match.
Not a disaster of a match for Tommy Haas though ........

Having struggled in his first two matches has Berdych now found his form or was it that Querrey played incredibly badly? 6-1, 6-1 is a real hammering. Given the way that he played against Falla I really hoped that Sam would put Berdych out!

Just wish Andy was in the other half of the draw now. Looking at those remaining 8 I can only see one real problem for an Andy with his head on .....and that's Berdych. He seems to struggle against him more than any of the others. Gasquet is on form but Andy knows how to handle him, Simon has never beaten Andy (I believe) so I shall be cheering for Gasquet and hoping that Cilic's improvement is temporary

I watched the match in bed. My plan was to start watching as I thought it could be a good match but if it was going Nole's way easily was going to go to sleep. Well, I lay there, then sat up, saying quietly OMG, blimey and other utterances of disbelief and admiration. Hass came out like a good 'un and Nole had no answer in the first set. It was incredible and I, along with many others was astounded. Must say that Djokovic was so gracious and sporting at the net smiling, shaking Tommy's hand and saying something to him. A lot of players could learn from him.
